I'm as new as they come. 71 years old. I have never played a string instrument. (I play the Blues on Harmonica)
You make it look so easy and I am slowly learning. I thank you for what you have taught me here.
Thank you for breaking down the 1/4/5 progression. You'd be amazed at how many teachers dive into using the terminology without context or explanation, making noobies like me feel lost immediately.
Your welcome, Dax. Thanks for the comment. M~
I'm with you on that Dex. finding someone who doesn't assume that you know everything is difficult to find on UA-cam. love this channel ❤!
I have played uke for years and thought I would splash out on a CBG to make a change. This video is absolutely what I was looking for in a beginners lesson and I am off and running. My missus doesn't even whine at the spend now!! Great job sir.
Your welcome, Dave. Thank you for watching the videos. Have fun on your CBG journey. 😎 M~
Oh bro I was the same.. wanted a new challenge ay.
Everybody loves a little southern rock. Being from Memphis I can relate to that. Great stuff !
Thank you, Bucky. I agree with you. M~
Thanks! I love the Blues! A big hug straight from the City of Rio de Janeiro - Brazil!
Marvellous lesson, and the great smile you have on your face, after you play Michael really is infectious enthusiasm. Sub and like from me . Great video too.
Thanks Sam. I appreciate that. M~
Hello from Ireland ,I do some blacksmithing work in my spare time .A guy approached me and asked me to make him a branding stamp to mark the cigarbox guitars he makes .I never heard of these instruments before but l'm glad I have now .Great music
Thank you, Sean. Cigar box guitars are pretty popular these days. :)
Great lesson for such a lovely nachured man. Please keep these videos coming.
Thank you, Chris. I will keep them coming. M~
Thank you! I needed this! I’m finding lots of videos for fancy riffs and tricks but it’s been hard to find videos for doing this kind of steady rhythm playing. Thank you so much!
Your welcome, Phoenix. Thank you for checking it out. M~
Nice to see a video you can actually learn from !
Now I know why guitar players are always smiling -- so fun to get (at least something resembling) the sounds here. I bought a "Blues Box Guitar" kit and as soon as I put it together and started playing these tutorials, I got the bug :D
Thanks David, Glad to hear you got the bug.. the only cure is LOTS of playing lol M~
are you still playing?
@@syscrashwashere I definitely need to get back to it -- likely will build one with frets when I can kick the World of Warcraft habir long enough ;-)
@@PlasticBubbleCosplay cool. I'm looking forward to building one myself soon.

Very cool video, Michael, thank you again. This is the second of your videos I've watched today (June 10, 2023). The first was posted from around this same time-frame, it was how to play a swampy sounding blues lick. Great stuff, keep them coming, and I'll be playing catch-up trying to watch more of them as I'm picking up my first CBG tomorrow.
Thanks Marc. M~

Hallo,
schöne Musik, das Video gefällt mir sehr gut. Daumen hoch.

Won't lie, Puckett sold me on getting a 3 string, but you're the one I'm going to learn with. I have a 3 string fretless, and want to squeeze all the fun out of it that I can, even if it came with a full length slide that I can't maneuver it all that well. Hope you might have some ideas for those of us, love your homesy "jamming in the garage together" charm!
Thank you, Stitch. Yeah, a 6 string slide is a little hard to move around on a 3 stringer. Maybe cut about 3/4 inch off that thing lol Ive done that before. M~
Thanks for the lesson! Love that "hot sauce"!
Thanks Steve. lol
Very cool, thanks for the lesson
Your welcome Isac. thanks for checking it out. M~
Great video,
Thanks for that Micheal! 🤙🏼

@@waden404 Thanks for subscribing my friend. Yes, its the perfect instrument for taking on the road, you can play it without an amp, or get a little battery powered amp, their awesome. :) M~

Love it I want a cigar box now lol
Thanks. They are a lot of fun. M~
awesome video...rock on
Thanks vmax. M~
Great video Michael, I've started building my own in the last 6 months, made about a dozen now, it's very addictive, I've got the build down quite well but can't really play. (5 string banjo player). I play by ear so it's very different and keep picking the strings banjo style but your videos make it easier. Many thanks Davy.
Your welcome. Thank you Davy. Addictive... YES, Very. LOL I'm glad your finding the videos useful. Well if it makes you feel any better, I can't play the banjo. M~
Love this, it looks (and sounds) like so much fun! I have my eye on a CBG in your Etsy store now.
Thank, Momcat. Yes, they are FUN. That's cool. Let me know if you have any questions. M~

Excellent stuff. Keep spreading the word
Thank you Clem, Yes, I will do that. M~
Oh I can't wait to give this a jam.. everyone is asleep so probably not a good time to crank this one out 😉
Thanks Alistair. M~
I'm studying/practicing this one to learn, then teach grandsons on their new 3 strings (after we learn how to properly strum/pick of course). 8)
That's great! I hope they enjoy learning.
Cool lesson!!
Thank you my friend. M~
Thanks for this, Vox man i like it 👍
Thanks Nicholas. M~
@@SouthernFireGuitars hey quick question, sorry to bother you, i watched your great videos & decided to learn, so i got an old CB Guitar i have out of the wardrobe, it only has 11 frets, so i think yours has 19, is there a reason for 11 frets with some fair size gaps closer to the neck, or should i just add more frets?
Its really a fun to play with.. So cool folks!
If you know the guitar you can easily play a cigar string to a box.
Thank you, Lisa. M~
amazing dude
Awesome lesson ,you explained alot and I actually understood
Thank you my friend. M~
Thanks for the lesson, and you sound great but the beginner needs to know how many strums, when to change frets and the rhythm and what the right hand is doing
Thank you, Lisa. Great suggestions. M~
Big thanks for France great!!!
Thanks ricou. M~
Brilliant!!!

As always 😎
Hi Michael, great video’s packed with the most useful information and great to watch, thank you. That said, please can you tell me if I have any hope. In the twilight years of my life I find myself thinking of making a three string cigar box guitar but can I learn to play the thing?
I know I have the skills to do the work, after 50 odd years of being a carpenter/ joiner/ cabinet maker, and I can see from your vids that you have found great skills yourself. I have a lot of things to find out about but to start, I figured I could start with a fret less neck and once I have the general construction engrained into my brain perhaps with mark two I could go for the full job. I have already ordered a nice cigar box, and in the wood store I have Oak, Mahogany, Ash, etc. I will have to get some tuners, strings, later fret materials, So I am up and running, and thanks to you I think all I need to know. Do you think my first question with practice possible? Thanks again Michael looking forward to any comments you might pass on. Thanks Bob, UK Oxfordshire…
The only way to know is to give it a shot, You're never to old to learn something new. Fret less ones are easier to build as a starter, but will be harder to learn, because of no frets. Fretted CBG's a pretty easy to learn with the open tunings. You can play tunes with one finger. Sounds like you know wood working, that's a big plus right there. You should build one. their fun. M~
Thanks for that Michael point taken sooooo it looks like a fretted one to start. Keep you posted, thanks Bob…
@@fishingfourme Your welcome, Bob, and good luck on the build. Let me know how it goes. M~
Am I crazy or is that a magnetic pickup? Mayb mounted under the box lid? Sounds good. I never thought about doing it that way if so. Good video as usual.
Hi Michael, Thank you. Its not a magnetic pickup, that guitar had a piezo disk pickup mounted under the bridge. M~
Amazing. I'm trying to play this riff, but until now I'm having problems with the rythym
Thanks Danilo. The more you play it, the easier it gets. M~
And, that was fun ...what kind of pickup were you using??
Thanks, Dave. I was using a 27mm Piezo pickup in that guitar. M~
I'm impressed, thanks again@@SouthernFireGuitars
Really enjoyed this video but could you please explain your strumming pattern? Thank you.
I will try!
Hi Micheal
I'm a real beginner so help please. When you strum down do you then strum up of is it only down strokes.
Greetings also from the UK. Hope you are all safe.
Hi Allan, sorry about the delay, just seen this. I do up strokes and down strokes usually, but it depends on the tune I'm playing. Thanks for checking it out. Stay safe in the UK brother. M~
Great lesson Mike, hey what are those big brown boxes on YOUR left?
Thanks David, Those boxes are small ones use for parts and what nots lol
@@SouthernFireGuitars oh, so they’re not gonna be a 3 string bass or something?
@@graysaw No, they are a little small for me to build something with, so I store part in them.
YaY I almost did this. I don't have frets or markings so it's weird but cool enough.
How do you tune that first string to g without the string breaking? Mine breaks everytime.
Hi Joey, Make sure your tuner is set to (Chromatic) ( C ) when tuning to an open tuning. If you have it set for tuning a 6 string guitar, you will surely break some strings :) Hope this helps. M~
Don't eliminate the rattle from the slide. That's like people over shielding their strats to try to filter out the noise caused by the springs interacting with the pickups. That noise is part of the sound. If you don't like that sound then you've chosen the wrong instrument to make music with.
some like the extra noise, and some don't. Its a preference thing. 😎
what size and make string do you normally use for GDG?
I buy bulk strings size 040, 030, 022 nickle wound.
where do you get your Slide? I have big fingers and the slides don't fit
The one I'm using in this video is a Dunlap 218 amzn.to/4c3FjvP I also sell my own home made Bottle Neck Swamp Slides on my website. www.southernfireguitars.com/
Michael. Can you show me the rhythm hand you use.
I will try an do that. M~
Hey, Michael, what a nice vídeo. Just one begginers question: is It possible to play these riffs on a fretless 3 strings ? Keep up with The blues!
Thanks Carlos. Yes, you can play these on a fretless. M~
@@lonjohnson9854 Hi Lon. It could be your strings are a little low for slide playing, A little higher action will make slide playing a bit easier with less clanking you slide on the frets. M~
@@lonjohnson9854 If you like the sound of slide guitar, a fret less slider is a good addition for any guitar player. :)
Where can i buy a guitar like that? I'm wanting one to try to learn to play so bad but can't find a good one any where...
Hi Josh. I build and sell them on my website, just posted some new ones www.southernfireguitars.com/
How do I compensate for not being able to push my fingers on a fret, it is a high action guitar...
It sounds like the action it too high. You may need to lower it, or get a guitar with better action, so it plays easier. M~
😎
Hello. Very Goodyear.
What is the gauge of your strings ?
Thank you. I am using 040 030 022 gauge.
i've never seen a cigar box player playing thru one of C B Giddy's amps. would you be interested in doing a demo?
I don't have a CBGitty amp 😎
Please please please.I can not find the right strings as well as the pulling and the brand of the strings to have the same sound as you.merci beaucoup
I usually use string gauge 040 030 022 nickle would, but you can also use 3 strings from a 6 string pack that are close. 😎
Hi Micheal, how r you? I have a question. 🙉
The Plektrum is my Problem. It sounds like scrubbing Metall when i turn in the (Verstärker) emplyfier? And i loose it, and i stuck somehow beteween the strings. I know, Training Training Training but there might be some Tricks?
Alright.
Hi Sabine, I'm not sure I understand the quesion.
@@SouthernFireGuitars oh, excuse me. My english is not good. When i play with the pic. I guess, i do it wrong. Do you have advice for me? My play sounds not clear and i it is not fluend. I know i should exersise more. But maybe, you have advice for me. The sound is even more bad when i turn on the ampyfier. Maybe i play wrong with the pic and i dont understand the ampyfier. Do you have a good advice for me? Take care and stay safe. 😊
@@sabineweller7130 Hi Sabine. If your new to guitar and using a pic, it does take a little practice and time to get a nice clean sound. When using your amp, try turning down the treble and turn up the bass. That may give you a more clearer tone. :)
where cab I buy this video?
Thanks Maria, its on UA-cam lol
‘It’s a blues riff in G, watch me for the changes and try to keep up’
