The original curse was lifted for the pirates yes but it shows Jack (the monkey) going back to get a coin in the post credits of the first one.
It is mentioned in the second one that Isla de Muerta has sunk/flooded and no one is capable of getting to it.

Curse of the Black Peral is a standalone movie while Dead Man's Chest & World's End were written as a two film saga, They have to be watched together otherwise they won't make sense.

IMO, what they managed to achieve with david jones in these 2 movies were miles better than what MCU tried to do with thanos in like 20 movies.
Johnny's Jar of Dirt bit was improvised, so the looks of confusion from Orlando and Keira were genuine. Orlando was also kept in the dark about Jack and Elizabeth's kiss, and the entire cast was told at the end that Zoe Saldana was coming down the stairs, so their reactions to Geoffrey Rush were real.
Tbf, a lot of Johnny Depp's lines are improv 😂
Side note: Zoe's character was originally supposed to be in DMC, but Zoe had a horrible experience on set and refused to come back.

I love the backstory of Jack and Beckett.
Sparrow was once a privateer for the East India Trading Company, and was tasked with transporting a ship full of “cargo”. Upon discovering that the cargo was actually 100 slaves, Sparrow absconded with the ship, the Wicked Wench, and set the slaves free. Beckett’s career suffered as a result, and he had Jack branded a pirate for “stealing” the ship full of slaves. What’s more, he had the Wicked Wench burned, sinking Jack’s beloved ship.
Grieving the loss of the Wicked Wench, Jack then made a deal with Davy Jones. Jones agreed to raise the ship in exchange for 100 years of service. The ship’s hull was permanently blackened by the flames, so Jack renamed it the Black Pearl. Jack had 13 years of freedom and after that he should pay his debt. As we all know he doesn't want to do it. So when Davy Jones meets Jack he wants 100 souls in exchange of Jack's soul - a price chosen out of irony, given the reason the ship was sunk.
It really puts Jack's character into different perspective and shows how he is "the worst pirate".
You forgot the part where Jack made off with Beckett's balls.
Wow, really didn't know that was the story behind the whole Beckett witch hunting Jack.
Jack making the 100-soul deal was just a stalling tactic. He was just trying to find any way to weasel out of his original deal with Jones.
He had done so earlier, when telling the natives to increase the size of the fire. Of course, in that instance, he was just trying to save his own life.
Where is this story told?
I find it interesting that you like it. To me it ruins the mystery of Captain Jack Sparrow, and his character is very much built on that, and being unpredictable and selfish, which make his moments of humanity rewarding. Setting him up as a good guy already in the past undermines the key elements that make him so fascinating.
2 & 3 are a complete story together. So I'd say yes - continue with watching the 3rd installment just to get closure on the story. 4 & 5 are isolated single stories, so it's up to you if you want to keep watching Johnny Depp pretend to be drunk and chew up the scenery.

5 is somewhat connected though, 4 is completely standalone, 5 is kind of standalone but completes the story of the first 3 really nicely.
@@LukeRosdahl if by completes the story very nicely, you mean, was completely unneeded, unnecessary, forced, committed character assassination on Jack's character, killed off Barbossa for no reason(yeah it was a good arc for his character finally learning to surrender his fate to ensure the fate of someone he cared about, but at the same time he didn't need to die), basically tried retconning the rules of the compass and it's backstory with how jack got it in the first place, and was a wholly worse film than the original draft by the original writers of the first 4 movies, then yeah, you could call it completing the story nicely

The cgi with Davy Jones is STILL SO GOOD after so many years. Usually CGI effects age like milk but not with this movie

The most astounding thing about this movie (and the next) is how well Davy Jones holds up to this day as a VFX creation. I don't even question it when I see him - it's so easy to forget that he's not a real entity. Perhaps one of the greatest humanoid VFX I've ever seen.
I was just talking about that in another thread the other day. The original intent was to use Nighy's real eyes and mouth. Thats why if you see pics of him in his mocap suit, he's wearing makeup. They decided to abandon the idea and went one hundred percent digital. But the animators did such an amazing job. Jone's eyes have a spark of life about them. They don't seem to have that dead, soulless look of most CGI characters. In fact, if I remember correctly, one of the lead animators who worked on Jones had a copy of the review for the movie that mentioned Nighy being unrecognizable under all the prosthetic makeup effects! The reviewer thought it was real!

@@LORdREDSTOneNR1with as amazing as Gollum was, he was still too CGI. Of course they didn't have the technology that Pirates had by the time they filmed Dead Man's Chest. Before you'd have to film the scene twice, once with the actor for reference and then without for the clean plate. With Dead Man's Chest they were using mocap suits in real time on set. I believe this was the first movie to do so.
@@Clownboy15 No they didn't "abandon" the idea. It was also not the plan to use his real mouth and eyes from the start. He wore makeup around his eyes and mouth the entire time as a backup in case the VFX wasn't getting it. That was a very prudent call as there are multiple examples of half baked CGI mouth examples of the uncanny valley out there. They just did so good at the VFX on Davey Jones that they never needed to use Bill's real eyes or mouth. The extras of DMC spelled this out clearly. This one and Gollum from LOTR are great examples of it being done well. Then you can watch examples from Tron: Legacy of the de-aged Jeff Bridges and just get the creeps. You also see it in the Mandalorian with the de-aged Mark Hamill when he talks as well but at least that wasn't a big budget movie like Tron was.

I honestly rate this trilogy as one of the greatest, up there with Lord of The Rings. It knows what it is, it's executed well, and it's a fun ride from start to finish. Love all three of them, and looking forward to seeing your reaction to World's End!

Oh yeah it is one of the best movies of our times - blockbuster for a reason. People will get tired of this, but they really don't make movies that are fun have REAL setting and cinematography, characters were well written.....and oh yeah COLOR. Was so vivid and beautiful
Definitely, once the Davy Jones story gets explored more in Worlds End, it is easily one of the most tragic stories and just so epic at the conclusion
The last 2 in the trilogy are a lot like Revenge of the Sith. It's good in theory, with creative concepts and exciting scenarios, but no, the execution could definitely be better.
Yes! Someone of culture I see! I completely agree with this. The characters are so complex and fleshed out, their motives are all separate, the lines between good and bad becme so marred as characters flit between the sides. Fuck it's so GOOD
If there is one thing about this series that stands out above all else.....IT'S THE DAMNED MASTERFUL SCORE. The MUSIC is in a league of its own.
It's a masterful score. This movie came out about 2 years before iPods were invented. It was one of the last CD's I ever bought and I played it for hours on end.

Zimmer and his team could easy have stuck with just Jack's theme, love theme, battle theme, pirate theme and it still would have been great, but so many characters/ideas got their own uniquely amazing music. One might not know their names but they're instantly identifiable as PoTC - Up is Down, Davy Jones, Singapore, Hoist the Colours, The Kraken etc
I'm lucky enough to have both performed it and seen it performed live many times, and urge others to do the same if they get the chance.

The kiss Elizabeth planted on Jack in order to handcuff him to the ship was intentionally left out of Orlando Bloom's script so the WTF look on Will's face when that happens is a genuine reaction. Also, in the scene where Jack and the others first visit Tia Dalma there's a pair of boots on the table in the background. They were most likely Barbossa's and she was probably in the process of ressurecting him.

Backstory time:
Jack Sparrow was once hired by Beckett to illegally transport *100* slaves.
Sparrow refused and Beckett destroyed the Black Pearl. Davy Jones made a deal with Jack that he woulf raise it if he served him.
Hence the events of the entire franchise.
Which makes the whole thing quite tragic.
Jack Sparrow is being tormented for ironically doing something selfless.

At worlds end is definitely worth the watch. Its my personal favorite of the trilogy because there is a lot more action.
I actually love this film from a writer's perspective so much foreshadowing. Every item has a piece of symbolism for each character, and they have their own motives. The writers appreciate the audience by not having to explain everything, and they allow the audience to put 2 and 2 together. It's great if you really break it down.
Yep, that's exactly why it's my favorite of the bunch. And it all culminates in that 3-way standoff on the beach. Great scene, great payoff.

Jack being the chief is actually a callback to the first movie. In the beginning when Elizabeth falls, it cuts to Jack talking to the two guards. He is in the middle of a story where he says “and then they made me their chief”
So he's been made a chief 2 different times by random chance..?

So Jack was probably out on the water and was like “oh yeah that island I went to one time is close and probably a safer bet than the giant sea monster.”

The second kraken attack scene was actually done before the scene where Will meets Davy Jones. That way, the production crew was able to reuse the wrecked ship, instead of making a model for it.
To learn how the monkey is still around, there is a post-credit scene in the first Pirates movie.

This trilogy was absolutely incredible. Acting, effects, ingenuity of the overall plot. So freaking good.

I'm sure a couple people have said it already but the scene where Jack says I got a jar of dirt and falls wasn't scripted he decided to improve so everyone's reactions to him in that scene was 100% genuine
Bill Nighy has one of the best voices in movie history. On top of that, he is just a really great actor.
The spinning wheel bit is one of the best parts of the LEGO Game, swear to god.
People want the chest because they possess the leverage to get Jones to do whatever they want. "Do X or I stab the heart and you die."
Jack wants Jones to forgive his debt. Norrington wants his old life back and Beckett will give it to him if he delivers the heart. Will wants Jones to free his father.
World's End is totally worthy it.
The third one is my favorite. Though the first one is obviously a classic

The first movie is my favorite but I do enjoy the following two movies. I distinctly remember having the poster for the 3rd movie as my desktop background leading up to its release. The location changes and new pirates we meet in the 3rd movie are pretty fun.
Davy Jones teleporting to the other ship through the view of the telescope is such a great shot.

This is my favorite of the Pirates franchise because I love how they just leaned into the world and let it be absolutely bonkers.
Monkey survived in a post-credit scene in the first movie where it's shown to steal one of the cursed coins and thus gained immortality
I feel the third one is sort of a wrap up for the "trilogy".
It has some awesome sets and gives a satisfying ending.

Johnny took 30 minutes to enter the scene in POTC 1, Geoffrey Rush takes THE ENTIRE movie.
The East India Trading Company was (maybe still is?) A real organization. They helped hunt pirates to extinction or privatize their ships. Beckett and people like him were real. And heavily seen as "good guys" in real life. Although I'm sure they were dirty in their own ways much like in this movie.
Not to mention it wasn’t just the English who had companies like that. The Dutch had the VOC which was who the East India Company modeled themselves off of.
Well not really. They didn't exist to hunt pirates. They were a trading company, overseeing transportation/trade of goods from South and Southeast Asia to the UK. (They probably sometimes hunted pirates to protect their trade, but that was the extend of it.) This made the company super rich, so that they could afford their own private mercenary army, which they used to slowly conquer and subjugate India and the company essentially ruled India until 1858 when the UK absorbed the company after there was a big revolt / independence movement in India. The UK started then ruling India directly and established the so called British Raj and the British Monarch at that time, Queen Victoria, was coronated as Empress of India because of that. The East India Company btw. were also those responsible for smuggling Opium to China (which they farmed in their Indian holdings).
They also practically governed all of India before 1857. Also, both the US and Malaysian flags are based on the actual EIC flag, which was a 13-striped banner with a Union Jack in the upper canton (the Union Jack got replaced, but both countries kept the stripes; the 13 original American states and the 11 provinces of Malaysia + Brunei and Singapore)

The convoluted fight sequence (Jack, Will and Norrington on the wheel and Elizabeth and the pirates with two swords between them) is one of my favorites and quite hysterical!

I’m shocked it took you so long to get back to the “Pirates” franchise because I’ve never seen you have more fun watching a movie than the “Curse of the Black Pearl”.

The first movie was literally perfect. Somehow, they managed to make a movie that you can watch 10+ times and always notice something new. It's extremely layered.
6.5 and then an added 2 points for Bill Nighy's performance as Davey Jones. So 8.5
And then adding another 2 points for making my and many others childhoods. So 10.5
There's a tie-in videogame that explains Jack got locked up along with his father (you'll meet him later on) in that fortress prison, and he pushed Jack into a coffin to help him escape.
Ans the stakes at Liar's Dice were, in fact, high because there's a deleted scene where Will plays (and wins) to release his father. Bootstrap got himself back in the Dutchman for nothing.
The second and third movies are basically a two parter, they are both needed to see the full story.

I somehow didn’t notice until now…but when we first see the Flying Dutchman, a bit of the Kraken’s theme plays, that coupled with the sailer mentioning fowl breath, and the one without the face…and you can pretty easily put together what happened to that ship if you remember Gibbs’ story

The whole series is definitely worth seeing. It's a very entertaining, fun story.
Davy Jones is one of the best villains ever. I can’t put my finger on why. But he is.
There's a great video explaining the dice game scene because unless you fully understand the rules, there are a lot of details that are very easy to miss. I for example have seen this movie more times I can count (it's my favorite of the series) and did not fully understand it before seeing the analysis of it. The easiest to miss and most genius detail probably is that from the moment Bill joined as the last person, the outcome of the game was basically settled (and he knew it). That is because they are meant to declare their guesses based on the order in which they threw the dice, meaning that whatever Will did, his father could always outbid him and purposefully lose the game like he did.
I have that entire monologue by Davy Jones in his intro scene memorized, accent and all. It's just flawless villain introduction.

I am huge fan of these first 4 movies. I sort of grew up with them. This movie in particular has a big emotional connection to me. I saw it first in theatres with my parents. At the scene where Jack faces the Kraken and dives in, thats when I looked to my right and saw my Mom, mouth a big O in shock. Huge core memory for me since I fell in love with watching peoples reactions to stuff.
This movie trilogy is one of my all time favourites! I definitely think it's now starting to get the love that it deserves! The only critique I would have is the scene on the cannibal island and just lessening the silliness there, but otherwise I love everything about these movies! Dead Man's Chest I think is my fave out of the three (but could be swayed to put At World's End there too) for the way Hans Zimmer crafted such a stunning and intricate soundtrack. The music aids in telling the story and really immersing you into the scenes. This may sound so silly but honestly the first major Kraken scene with Will brings me to tears with the whole set up and dramatic musicality. And I love how detailed and complex the storyline is, and how well thought out each character's motives and actions are. Gosh I could go on and on about the movies! Glad you came back to this series, and you must watch the third! But honestly I wouldn't watch the 4th or 5th (especially 5th) because I feel like it ruins the beauty of the original trilogy.
Oh you should definitely watch the next one! At World's End is my favorite one. They really expand on the lore of this world in some fun ways.

I adore At World's End! It's polarizing for sure, a love-it or hate-it, but I'm firmly in the love-it camp for how well it wraps up these many plot threads, and the unique little fantasy realm that it keeps building out the world to. There's less Davey Jones, but he looks even better, and the musical score is the best of the series

The design of Davy Jones is so cool. My wife and I just rewatched this a few days ago. We both couldn’t believe how well the VFX held up. We watched another Disney film that came out within the last year or two, and it didn’t even come close to the VFX of this movie.
So, the game Jones and Will played is called Liar's Dice. There are variations on the rules of the game, and the rules for this one are fairly easy to figure out just by watching the scene.
One of the rules, and one that made Bootstrap an A+ dad, is that you can _only_ call the last person who went a liar.
So, Bootstrap literally put himself between Jones and Will, preventing Jones from claiming Will's soul.
i absolutely love these movies. I didn't watch them until last year and i binged all of them.

Great reaction, as always! Tbh, the 3rd one is my favorite BY FAR! It wraps up the story, and the narrative is more complex and interesting (and the soundtrack is just GOLD) I just love this trilogy sooo much, maybe I'm being biased haha

I was in the first installment of this franchise and came back as a different character for the third installment. (Strangely, my name is in the credits for *this* movie even though I didn't work on it.) The second and third movies were filmed at the same time so it was quite a difficult undertaking for Gore Verbinski as the director. It was made even more difficult because the script was still being written during the filming of the movies and the studio had given him a deadline to meet. The entire cast and crew were under tremendous pressure to get these movies done on time (which they were) and under budget (which they weren't).
I'd recommend seeing the third one if, for nothing else, to see how the story threads all get tied up.
I believe the 2nd is the best out of the main 3. This was insane when it came out and Davy Jones is such a great villain, so much depth to him.
I love jumping into a reaction channel to someone who has already seen it and is going into it having memories of the movie. No wonder I stopped watching this reaction channel.

You should watch the next one. Parts 2 and 3 were set up to be a long ass movie., but not about a donkey. There will be a lot of closure, fur sure.

Yes please watch the next one! It's honestly me favorite of the three, dramatic, epic, dark. Sure 1st one is better objectively, but I really love 3rd still
Well obviously you should to see At World's End next seeing as it's a direct sequel to Dead Man's Chest, later followed by On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales. However, breaking from the pirate theme I'd recommend seeing (if you haven't seen them already) are Chocolat (also starring Johny Depp) and Girl with a Pearl Earring. And though you watched The Haunting of Hill House miniseries, perhaps you'd care to watch the 1999 movie The Haunting, which is essentially the same story, but with an updated look.

Both films you watched were good. Both have good quotes. This one has the Davy Jones factor, he's an awesome villain and he is played super well.
Dead Man's Chest and At Worlds End are essentially parts 1 and 2 of the same movie. The story started in this movie is concluded in the next one.
