I believe this movie still holds the record for the largest film set ever built. They constructed a massive set with mock-ups of the Pearl and Dutchman on a tilted, spinning disk with thousands of gallons of near-freezing water pumped in for the Maelstrom scene.
I believe it. This record must have been broken since the MCU started spending small country GDP’s worth of money on their movies, but Pirates 3 was also the most expensive movie ever made for a good while.

Unfortunately the Hobbit beats them because they used over 500,000 squared feet for Hobbiton (the portion of the shire with all the hobbit homes). And the Hobbit remains the largest movie set ever built.

@@trixiebewitched500,000 feet?! I've never actually seen the Hobbit movies- how much of that is actually visible in the movies themselves? I imagine that at least half of the set wasn't actually used in the final cut.
So a couple of things. There is two deleted scenes that fill in a massive amount of lore. The first is that Davy Jones created the curse that forces anyone who stabs his heart to take his place and cut out their own heart. The curse of the Flying Dutchman is just 10 years at sea and one day at shore. Everything else was created by Davy Jones. The second deleted scene was a different version of the meeting between Jack and Becket. Where we learn despite Jack's pirate heritage he did try to go straight at one point and worked for Becket transporting cargo. One day Becket wanted Jack to transport 100 slaves and Jack refused. Instead freeing the slaves and taking them to live on Tia Dalma's island. They were the people mourning Jack at the end of Dead Man's Chest. Becket punished Jack by branding him a pirate and burning/sinking his ship. So Jack made a deal with Davy Jones to raise the ship which became the Black Pearl. It being Black because it was burned. That's also why Davy Jones require 100 souls to spare Jack. He was mocking Jack on how he got into this mess in the first place.
Finally one of the original writers stated that the original intention of the ending is that if your love stays loyal to you for the 10 years you will be free of the curse of the Flying Dutchman and able to step down as Captain. That's why Davy Jones hated Calypso so much. Her betrayal trapped him on the Dutchman. But since Elizabeth was loyal Will would be free. This was of course retconned in the fifth movie by the new writers.
I'd never heard the bit about 10 years of loyalty. That's neat, but you should mark part of that comment as SPOILER or just reword it.
@@theadamabrams The only thing I spoiled about the fifth movie was potentially the first five minutes. Not that big a deal. Also these guys post these reactions weeks in advance to their patreon before they post it here. They probably already seen the fifth movie by now. And honestly I feel like I was being more vague about future spoilers then a lot of the other commenters.

I read once that while Will learned to be a pirate by watching Jack, Elizabeth learned to be a pirate with Barbossa. Will has the cunning and the 'betray who I must' attitude as long it serves his purpose. Elizabeth is matter of fact, full of flair and showmanship, and with a real way of leadership because her first real encounter with pirates was a leader of a ship of dead who wouldnt follow anyone else but Barbossa. Sacrificing Jack in the last movie wasnt a Jack move, it was a Barbossa move.
I think it's a little of both because Barbosa was first mate on Jack's ship before he stole it. So I think he learned from jack and also Added his own spin to it as he learned more over the years of being captain.
Will just got a taught by the original 😂
@@kingjames6948 Even watching all of these movies I haven't found an instance of Barbossa mimicking Jack. Barbossa is flamboyant, full of theatrics, with a charismatic way of leadership. Is also ruthless and will try to win no matter what.
Jack is none of that. Jack has the creativity, but everyone in his ship would leave him given the chance. His antics are about entertaining himself, yet hes selfless in his own selfish way.
It's like, Jack is what we as an audience want a pirate to be, but Barbossa is what a pirate is.
Lord Cutler Beckett (who could be considered the main antagonist of the first three movies) was a great villain. In a world filled with magic, gods and immortals, Beckett, a mortal man, stood at the top of them all and bent them to his will. He just said and did whatever he wanted and almost nothing could faze him. Even when he lost, he accepted his fate calmly and had potentially the most epic death scene in cinematic history.
Beckett was that rare type of villain: completely logical in the face of magic. 'Oh, there's a squid captain who rules the sea? Well how does his magic work? I'll make him another one of my tools.'
Great portrayal by Tom Hollander!
He has one of my favorite quotes in the trilogy; after the kracken is dead, he tells Davy Jones "The immaterial has become, immaterial" goes perfectly along with Jack's quote to Barbosa later; "The world's still the same, there's just less in it" when they see the kraken's death. The underlying themes in the trilogy are amazing. Even though the kracken was his enemy, jack still felt upset with it's death because the magic and mystery of the ocean, the freedom and everything that he loved about it is slowly being taken away by the East India Trading Company
He knew the rules of the magic and used them. It’s refreshing to see a muggle play by the magical rules and not be totally lost in the face of them

I was going to say the same thing. He realizes that the heart is close by because of the tear, and then proceeds to replace his sadness with anger

My interpretation was always that he thought he’d been Davy Jones for so long that he was no longer human, that he and his crew had divorced themselves from humanity and all that it entails - love especially. So the idea of feeling human emotions was just something he didn’t think he was capable of anymore.
But the tear reminded him, no, he actually still is human much as it’s been buried under years of dereliction of duty and the appearance of a grotesque monster. Physically and metaphorically, Davy Jones always had a heart.
One of the characters in this movie is a supernatural harbinger of souls lost at sea who uses a kraken to destroy ships and tricks people into making deals with him to enslave their souls for eternity on his ship… and the main villain is still the East India Trading Company.
This isn’t a complaint, just an observation on how fucked the EIC was. 😂

One of the few deleted scenes showed that Jack knew about EIC and beckett before the films because he captured a slave ship from them and set the people free. I wish they kept it in because it just hits home the point that the real monsters are what lengths people will go to to get ahead and not supernatural creatures of the sea. 😅
I mean yeah, if you brought Davey Jones to the real world, the actual historical East India Trading Company would still have been a much scarier foe. In a way they were the world's shadow government.
@@annaLee-uh1xz He didn't capture the ship, he was hired to transport "cargo" but found the cargo were all slaves. He freed them, betraying his deal, getting branded as a pirate, getting sunk, and having Davey Jones bring his ship The Wicked Wench back from the bottom of the sea in exchange for 100 souls to match the 100 he set free. When the ship was brought back it was burnt black and renamed The Black Pearl. So in a way all of this stemmed from Jack doing a single good act illegally. Also fun fact, thkse slaves were the people holding candles and crying over Jack's death in Tia Dalma's swamp last movie.
Jones is the personification of supernatural evil and powers beyond human comprehension.
Beckett is the personification of the evil found within all men which we all know and have experience with which makes him a bit more hateable for most people.
Thats how ive always viewed it anyways.
The scene where they free Calypso is genius writing. They’re freeing her from her human form, but they’re still binding her with rope in an attempt to control her.
If I understand correctly, if Will didn't tell Calypso that Davy Jones betrayed her, would she have decimated the pirate fleet?

at the very beginning of this series Barbossa greeted Elizabeth as "Miss Turner" and i love that he would give her goodbye as "Mrs. Turner"
Jack was born and raised as a pirate, however sometime in his young adulthood he became ‘sorta’ straight, working for the EIC and often doing errands and missions for them. During this time he met Beckett who was impressed with him and gave him the ship Wicked Wench. However Jacks double life, often protecting EIC interests from pirates with words and insider knowledge but also still doing questionable things comes to bite him when he messed up on a mission for Beckett by discovering a lost city with power. Jack hides it from Beckett who loses his chance to higher status.
As a result Beckett traps Jack, a man who loves freedom. He orders Jack to deliver “cargo” from Africa only for Jack to realize its one hundred slaves (souls *wink wink*), Jack sets them free on Tia Dalmas Island and is caught by Beckett. He proceeds to brand Jack a pirate, forever denying him a chance at a normal life, and sets the Wicked Wench on fire and orders her sunk. Jack escapes and returns to the Wench but can’t save her. As it sinks, and him with it, he calls out to Davy Jones and strikes the deal that defines the movies. Jones will raise the ship and Jack and in return, after 13 years, Jack serves for 100 on his ship. Jack agrees. The ship is now supernatural due to the effect of Jones and due to the burning is made black. Thus he renamed the ship the Black Pearl
If you rewatch Dead Man's Chest, you will see many hints to Calypso's reveal.
At Tia Dalma's hut, when she is telling Davy Jones' story and Jack is stealing her stuff, we get a good look at the music box. Then, when Will is trying to steal the key from sleeping Davy Jones, we also get a good look at his own music box.
When Tia Dalma is telling Davy Jones' story, she says he fell in love with a woman, to which Gibbs counters that he's heard Jones fell in love with the sea. Tia Dalma then says that the same story has a different version and both ARE true, and then points at herself as she describes the mysterious woman. Yeah, Davy Jones did fall in love with the Sea and with a woman, the Sea Goddess.
There is also a weird interest Tia Dalma has for Will throughout all of her interactions with him in Dead Man's Chest, and then in At World's End, almos as if she knew he was fated to take upon himself the task she gave Davy Jones.
This movie was released in 2007. At that time it was the most expensive movie ever made. It cost $300 million dollars to film, and made over $900 million in the box office. The maelstrom scene is still considered one of the most expensive visual effects in all of cinema.
The decks of the pearl and the Dutchman were recreated to scale inside a giant hangar. The ships were put on giant lifts and they were able to program them to mimic ocean waves up to 30 feet tall. Shooting the scene took months to film, and Geoffrey Rush has stated there was so much rain that his costume weighed close to 50 pounds. On the behind the scenes someone stated “Can a man get any more wet?” And this is very accurate to how much rain was generated for the scene. The rain was so thick, the blue screen behind the ships was obstructed. So they had to lower the amount of rain water falling on the ships. Debris cannons were loaded to coordinate with the cannon blasts. All real effects in the battle. On top of that, all the scenes were digitally recreated so the entire sequence was shot twice. They overlapped the cgi sequences over the real footage to enhance their ability to do crazy special effects. On top of that, they used the real ship models at sea, and another set of models inside a US navy base. One of the biggest indoor ocean simulators made.
Davy Jones character model was notorious to animate. Every tentacle needed to move like an octopus would, his crab claw and crab leg had to move like a crab, and they had to model a human face that could express emotion to the camera. A pretty tough task for the time. Notice how Davy doesn’t have a nose, so the animators cut off one of the tentacles and made him a breathing tube so he could actually (believably) smoke his pipe. (Joining Voldemort in the Villains without a nose club) His character was a huge achievement for the special effects industry. Also, the animators could not find the perfect skin pigmentation for him either. Until one day, an animator saw a coffee cup in the trash that had some weird stains inside. He applied the coloration of the stain to Davys character model, and the rest is history.
As for the ships, they were real. The black pearl and the Flying Dutchman were created out of actual cargo vessels. Disney decided to Moore them off the coast of their private island, Castaway Cay for their Disney Cruise line guests. (I highly recommend sailing with Disney btw. They have a pirate night on their cruises) Unfortunately for the fans, the real world elements have taken its toll on both ships, and their future is uncertain.
When creating the music for Davy Jones organ suite, Hans Zimmerman took into account that Davy Jones has many more appendages to play the organ compared to a human. So the piece he plays actually requires multiple people to play to actually recreate the song in it’s entirety. Pretty cool stuff.
There is a deleted scene that shows us how Jack became a Pirate. It takes place on the Endeavor with Beckett and Jack. It explains why there was a heavy price to pay Davy Jones. 100 souls. It is really cool, and I really wish they left it in the film. I hope you guys watch it. Jack is such a wonderful character and backstory on his character is kind of a mystery.
Johnny Depp took inspiration from Keith Richards when creating Jack Sparrow. He viewed pirates as rock legends back in their day. So it made sense for the movie to cast Richards as Teague, Jacks father.
The mini JS hanging onto his dreads were actually real life JD acting while hanging onto a gigantic prop of his dreads.
Bill Turner isn’t going “senile” he is succumbing to the curse of the Dutchman. He states in the second movie “We lose who we are, bit by bit, until we end up like poor Willard here.” The longer you stay on the Dutchman, the more you lose of yourself. You lose your original form, cursed to represent the sea. Eventually you lose what really matters, who you are. Your personality, your memories, everything. That is the price to pay for “forestalling your final judgement.” ☠️ "Part of the crew, part of the ship."
The multiple Jacks scene was JD refilming a different JS gone crazy for each take, and layered over each other. A similar effect was used on Becketts death. They shot Beckett slow walking first and then layered it with the ship exploding behind him. Pretty cool stuff.
I highly recommend watching all of the special features and deleted scenes. They are amazing.
I fell in love with the soundtrack at the first note. I absolutely love it. I listen to it all of the time. If you listen to the entire Davy Jones suite, the notes convey his sadness, hopelessness, and rage. It is very well done.
My favorite scene is the fight between Jack and Davy Jones. “Look there boys, a lost bird. A lost bird that never learned to fly.” “Never too late to learn eh?” “I can set you fee, mate.” “My freedom was forfeit long ago.” So good.
The first 3 films tell a complete story. The future films are one off movies. Which is fine for me. I love this world and I love the lore and the world building so much. I hope you watch the next two movies.

It’s crazy because I don’t think I hear too many people talk about “At World’s End” as much. It’s very fun!
Given what would become of the franchise following this film, it's clear that people didn't appreciate it until it was too later.

Theres so much to love about this movie! As a kid it was my favorite, but looking back now, i think it’s probably the weakest of the good three Pirates films. I think maybe I liked all the insane lore they kept adding. It’s still About a thousand times better than 4 and 5, but 1 and 2 were written and paced much better.
It's because this movie is a continuation of Dead Man's Chest so they sort of blend together in most people's mind. Curse of the Black Pearl, On Stranger Tides, and Dead Men Tell no Tales could stand alone as their own stories. Dead Man's Chest and At Worlds End are incomplete without the other.
The whole trilogy is amazing, one of the best in my opinion
The fact that Elizabeth introduced herself as Elizabeth Turner to Barobossa in the first film, and in their parting he called her 'Mrs. Turner' is just beautiful for me.
The “We’re not back” line from Jack. No jokes. No witty words. Just the heartbreaking truth
The one-eyed dude and the balding guy (Ragetti and Pintel respectively) aren't a couple. The actors came up with a backstory that Ragetti is Pintel's nephew. That's why they're always together.
Also, the running joke with Ragetti is that he's an idiot who also happens to just randomly know a lot.
Hans Zimmer's "I don't think now is the right time", the almost 8 minute long music that goes under the main battle at the end, still gives me goosebumps to this day! He did a wonderful job with the scores for Dead Man's Chest and At World's End!!

Both Calypso's and Davy Jones's music boxes are tuned different, Davy Jones's being slightly lower in tune, they were meant to be played together.
“I want more pirate movies” that’s why we have the entire show Black Sails as a way to satiate that feeling!

@@leonduncan3327 So what's the part that was a cliffhanger to you..? The story is (kind of) a prequel to the events of Treasure Island. The only ambiguous part is whether Flint is alive, or if Silver fabricated the whole story. Just bc something feels unfinished on purpose or by accident doesn't make it a cliffhanger, that's not what that term means.
It's ironic and quite hilarious how Elizabeth just started as a noobie pirate with some experiences that she just becamed one of the 9 Pirate lords as captain and then next thing not long after thanks to Jack she's already a Pirate King! 😂
But yeah this is the end of Elizabeth and Will's journey while it is a new beginning for Jack And Barbossa.

@@michellehawk282 I did see the fifth movie, But they weren't huge relevance for the plot for what Jack, Barbossa And some "other characters" were doing since they were more relevant for this final movie.
@@leonduncan3327 I know but technically Will's son is one of the Main Characters in the fifth movie and his mission is a part of the main plot. After all it is the reason why he teams up with Jack so i wouldn't say it is the end of their story.
@@michellehawk282 True, But in terms of roles and plots, Will's journey started all about finding his father while in the first movie it was about rescuing Elizabeth from Barbossa as he didn't want to believe his father or himself is a pirate but couldn't deny it, Then on the second one It's where Will had two goals, Taking Jack's compass to save Elizabeth from her execution which it was dropped since she escaped, And the other after finding his father all those years, He needed a way to kill Jones and free him from his debt, Now in this case he succeeded all, While at the price of being eternally bound to the Dutchman, This was like the end of Will's road as he was stuck to an eternal curse work while same goes for Elizabeth while she lost everything and her home and all she had peft left was him And their son, And had to wait every 10 years for Will to return to spend time for just one day or 12 hours minimum.
The story of Calypso and Davy Jones is based on Greek mythology. During the war between the gods and the titans, Calypso sided with her father, the titan Atlas, over her fellow gods. When the gods defeated the titans, for her betrayal, Calypso was sentenced to never be allowed to be with the ones she loved. The movie worked this into the story. Since Calypso was a goddess, Jones became the Captain of the Flying Dutchman to live forever so he could be with her once every 10 years. But when she didn't meet him because of her punishment, he thought she tricked him into eternal servitude to the Dutchman, so he taught the Brethren Court how to bind her in human form to strip her of her power, then cut out his heart so he wouldn't feel any emotions since he still loved her and couldn't deal with the pain of her "betrayal". Then he stopped doing his duty to the Dutchman, which is why he became corrupt and all fish-like.
1:00:09 you can see Will’s split second of confusion because Elizabeth responded to his marriage proposal by yelling “Barbossa!” Then followed it by asking the captain to officiate the marriage, that’s when Will puts the pieces together 😂
Not sure if the theory was said yet, but in the conversation between becket and Jack, becket mentions that Jack abandoned his job of transporting goods. Which jack replied people aren't goods. The ship was burned and sunk with all the people on it and jack was given his p brand as a pirate from becket. After, jack made a deal with Jones and and his ship was raised with its charred hull and sails being renamed the black pearl. The 100 souls Davy Jones asked for was a bit of irony for the 100 people that jack failed to save that day.
That’s such a good deleted scene showing how he isn’t a hypocrites and doesn’t want others to become enslaved as pirates are the freedom of control.
You guys are, of course, inventors! Pintel and Ragetti are not “friends+” or even just friends, Pintel is Ragetti’s uncle, he is his mother’s brother. This is the official canon, because... all the actors were asked to come up with backstories for their characters, and Mackenzie Crook (Ragetti) loved his hero so much that he wrote a short story about him.
I love how because he has the hair all Ruff has to do to be a pirate is put on a hat. He's got to be the best pirate I've ever seen

A lot of people dislike the second film, but I honestly believe that the first three Pirate films are up there as one of the greatest trilogies ever made, rubbing shoulders with Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. Great music, sets, actors and plots, and good honest fun. The later ones don't hold a candle to them, but the first three are endlessly rewatchable.
And if you want more fun at see, you should definitely watch Master and Commander!

Fun Fact: when the screen goes dark after they go over the waterfall, you can hear the sounds from the original "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride at Disney World/Land.

Gore was never involved with any attempt at continuing the pirate trend.
To be fair on the whole "putting a target on Elizabeth's back" there aren't *that* many people who know the circumstances around Will taking over the Duchman and his personal life with Elizabeth. So long as Jack and Barbosa's people don't go explaining about the heart and Will, its unlikely anyones gonna be hunting for it.
I mean Davy Jones story was a legend everyone knew of cutting out his own heart and everything, and even with that our heros didn't learn that whoever stabs the heart takes the Duchmans place until Elizabeth's dad shares it with them after he was murdered for learning it. Only after that does Jack start thinking about becoming the new Duchman, before that he just wanted it as leverage to square his debt or kill Jones. The other people from the East India Trading Company who interacted with the Duchman are all dead. The only others that learned that were Seo Fang's men and they squared up behind Elizabeth as Captain by the end so I don't see them selling out their old Captain and the Pirate King who helped them win the war.
Maybe scraps of information leak here and there, but for someone to put it all together would probably require a lot of asking around and I doubt the pirates would take kindly to "you know that guy Will, who helped save you from certain death and Husband of the 4th Bretheren Court Pirate King? Yeah i'm looking for any information as to where his heart is to kill him"
And lastly I just don't see that working out well for anyone. Its the Dutchman's crew who cut out the new captains heart to make them captain, which means Will's Dad would be there in that process like "Yeah you just killed my only family, let me carefully cut out your heart and make you captain" Nah, that person isn't getting Immortality we'd just swiftly go to Captain Bootstrap Turner.
"Hoist the Colors" (the song they sang in the beginning when they were getting hanged) still gives me chills every single time i hear it. Hans Zimmer is a genius for creating it. The entire music score for Pirates of the Caribbean is freaking awesome, i'm so glad they got him to do it, even though he was initially hesitant about it.
The song at the beginning, _Hoist the Colors,_ was written for the movie to tell the tale of Calypso, Jones, and the Court. Below is my analysis.
*The Chorus:*
_Yo ho, haul together_
_Hoist the colors high_
_Heave ho, thieves and beggars_
_Never shall we die_
The chorus is sung numerous times within the song. It's basically telling the pirates, full of thieves and beggers, to get ready to set sail. The lyrics here are obvious in meaning.
*First verse:*
_The King and his men_
_stole the Queen from her bed_
_and bound her in her bones_
The King was the Pirate King at that time, and while his identity is unknown, I believe him to be Jones himself. The King's men refers to the Brethren Court. The Queen is Calypso, her bed is the sea, and binding her in her bones refers to binding her to her human form.
_the seas be ours and by the powers_
_where we will we'll roam_
The seas literally belong to the pirates due to having power over Calypso.
*Second verse:*
_Now some have died_
_and some are alive_
_and others sail on sea_
This is a reference to the chorus of the song, which mention the pirates as thieves and beggars. This part of the verse is obvious in meaning.
_with the keys to the cage_
_and the Devil to pay_
The "keys" to the cage are the nine Pieces of Eight, which were used to bind Calypso. The Devil refers to Davy Jones himself since he's the one that told the Brethren Court how to bind her; he's also a devil of sorts, or what I like to call, an ocean-bound Hades.

Fiddler's Green is an after-life of paradise for sailors where a fiddle never stops playing, but in the POTC universe, it is a tavern located in Davy Jones' locker. It might have a fiddle playing inside to fit the narrative.

This entire verse may refer to the scene of POTC where the pirates sing their song, and the Brethren Court is summoned to join together. A "all pirates unite" type of moment.
Once I heard “bound her in her bones” in the song and when Barbossa said it, I figured it was about Calypso. Love the song
My one problem with this movie is that Will and Elizabeth’s fates should be switched. It feels so out of character that Elizabeth Swann, King of the Pirates, would give up on the sea and wait on land for decades.
Alternatively, she could just be King of the Pirates and come to shore for that one day a decade. They could even meet up on the ocean regularly!
Barbosa is by far the best Pirate in the series. Jack is the best schemer/improviser on the seas, but Barbosa is THE Pirate. He was cursed, cleansed, immediately killed and eventually revived, AND he says ARRRGH!!!
I was so expecting a “BRO, That Monkey is a *MENACE*,” from Boom, during the fireworks scene. Glad we got one eventually though.

1:04:19 I don't think people realize the poetry here. The sword Davy Jones uses to stab Will? Its the one Will made for Norrington in the first movie!
It was a gift from Governor Swann for reaching the rank of commodore. Norrington had the sword taken from him after being dishonorably discharged for letting Sparrow get away in movie 1, and then Becket used it to decorate his office in movie 2 (we see him taking it out and examining it). Then when Norrington returns as an admiral in this movie, Becket gives the sword back to him. Then he frees Elizabeth and stabs Davy Jones with it, who takes it saying 'nice sword.' He fights with it in this movie and finally lets it go, for good, when he stabs Will.
This is easily my favorite of the series. I remember going to see this in theaters when it came out. The final battle sequence is forever ingrained in my memory.
I am amused about the notice of the cheat code that Davy Jones could have gone to see Calypso, but if you remember the 2nd movie her home was built in a swamp connected to the ocean and her house was built on stilts over the water, he could have gone to see her at any time as she was never on dry land technically.
For me, this is the best wedding scene in movie history.

Captain kidd wasnt a kid, his name was William Kidd and he was stranded on an island into that human shape bird feeder thingy and he was just there for a 150 years if i remember correctly
Kidd was hanged, and then his dead body was "gibbeted"-placed hanging on display to deter others-for three years.

1:02:00 Jack is canonically the best shot in the series. His accuracy with firearms is utterly unmatched, and outweighs even his improv skills. The only reason this isn’t utterly game-breaking is that he’s in the era of flintlocks, where you generally get the one shot per gun per fight.
Beckett's death is still one of the most visually amazing scenes I have ever seen in a movie. Now that's how you kill a villain!
I really wish they kept the line when Jack said "People aren't cargo" when he was talking with the EIC. It was SUCH a cool line that explains so much about Jack & how he got where he is now, but still doesn't regret a second of it.

I think the Governor had outlived his usefulness and would have been killed in the near future anyway.
In the last movie, Beckett told the Governor that he wanted his connections and whatnot. Then in this one, Beckett is now in control, so he probably doesn’t need the Governor around anymore but also has to consider the implications of just disappearing him. The result is that he goes through official channels to have an execution order set up, which would take some time to do.
If anything, the governor discovering details about Davey Jones probably just moved his execution up a few weeks.

I love all of the practical effects that is in this movie!!! It helps make it feel so real and special!!

This it´s a great great movie, with a total rollercoaster at the end. Some facts:
- I think that Norrington it´s a very underrated character. In his best or his fallen, his behaviour was always like a real MAN. That final redemption, leaving Elizabeth and the rest the chance to escape, honors him. And of course he loved her in all moment, and deserved that final kiss.
- Jack´s father it´s Keith Richards, the guitarist of the legendary Rolling Stones.
Norringtons loyalty was to the governor of port royale, but now the governor was killed, so yall shouldnt be so confused about the writing, just trust me it makes sense

Not enough people talk about how well Elizabeth was written through this trilogy. I fully believe her journey from a young Governor's daughter to the Pirate King she becomes by the end. These may have been Jack's movies, but this was *Elizabeth's* story.

30:51, Regarding the scene with Beckett and Jack, there's actually a deleted scene with alternate dialogue that explains a lot about Jack's backstory.
A long time ago, Beckett hired Jack to deliver some valuable products but Jack refused when he realized what he was delivering were slaves. Beckett in retaliation destroyed Jack's ship, The Wretched Wench, and left him for dead. Out of desperation, Jack made a deal with Davy Jones to save his life and return his ship from the bottom of the sea. The Wretched Wench, charred black from Beckett's cannon fire, was renamed The Black Pearl and Jack was to captain it for 10 years before returning the Pearl and his soul to Jones.

I’n the deleted scenes the assassin guy tells Beckett that Elizabeth’s father was asking questions about the heart, so Beckett told the assassin to kill him.
Also in the extended scene we find out that Jack worked for Beckett and was hired to transport cargo to him. Jack replies “People aren’t cargo mate”.
So Jack was suppose to deliver the slaves to Beckett but instead let them free. Beckett then had Jacks ship the “Wicked Wench” torched and made Jack watch it burn and sink, he also branded Jack as a pirate. Jack then made a deal with Davy Jones to raise his ship from the ocean floor, the ship was still burnt black so he renamed it the “Black Pearl”.
There is a theory that the 100 souls Davy Jones wanted was to represent the slaves he freed so it’s thought there were 100 slaves.
Johnny Depp based his personality and mannerisms for Captain Jack Sparrow after Rolling Stones member Keith Richards, so they had the man himself play the part of Jack's dad in this film. Love it.
6:59 if people haven't said it yet, there are blooper reels of all the Pirate movies, and this scene had so many misses for the swords lmao. It is so clean simply cause they had to redo it so many freaking times! I think this one is my fave of the original 3, but the whole series was balling. You were right they had to have upped the money with all the fight scenes, the cinematic shots, the music. Music from here might be my favorite. No matter how old this series gets I think it will always stand the test of time. Now onto 4!
The reason they are called the Nine Pieces of Eight is because, at the time, a Piece of Eight was a nickname for a specific currency. I imagine it was something like Eight shillings to a pound or something, but there were nine of them being used by these Pirates to symbolize the lords among them.
A piece of eight was just a spanish dollar. They got the name piece of eight, mostly called that by the british, because you could cut them into eight pieces. If one piece of eight was $1, but you only needed $0.5 to rent a room, you could cut the piece of eight in half. Eight segments was the maximum it could be cut into. It was literally "breaking" the "note" into "change." It must also be cut into 2, 4, and 8 segments. If you needed 6, for example, and only had one piece of eight, it would have to be cut into 4 or 8 segments, and you would keep 1 or 2 pieces as "change."
You can have 9 pieces of eight, or you could have a chest full of pieces of eight.
20:40 interesting theory, i do know that the song they sing is specifically about calling the Pirate Lords for council. The entire song is all about how they captured Calypso and about Davy Jones. "The king and his men, stole the queen from her bed, and bound her in her bones" and the nine pieces of eight the child had rang out when he was hung, something that specifically happens to call the Pirate Lords "We are a call to all, pray heed the squall, and turn your sail toward home." Essentially, all the free pirates are calling for the lords to come to their aid during a time of prosecution "Some men have died, and some are alive, and others sail on the sea. With the keys to the cage, and the Devil to pay, we lay to Fiddler's Green" (special afterlife for specific people who served a long time at sea) Which is why Barbosa knows about it and starts the quest to find Jack. He needs him to release Calypso and hopefully save the pirate life. I wish the movie was more clear about this stuff but imo the trilogy is peak cinema for me. There's a lot of cut content that really deepens the story.
Music in this movie is TOP TIER
there's a deleted scene on the dutchman just after they bring his heart aboard. governor swan asks jones about elisebeth and thinks shes dead when jones says he sunk the pearl. the governor tries to stab the heart and that when jones reveals he cursed his own heart so that anyone who stabbed it would have to take its place. beckett says they know elisabeth is still alive and the governor quits working with beckett, and after he leaves beckett subtly orders his death
Imma be honest, movie 2 has stuck in my head as my favourite Pirates but I genuinely forgot just how damn good this movie was, thanks for reminding me!

This was the darkest of the three movies. Not only for the opening, but for how far Beckett was willing to go to achieve his goals.
Now looking back on these films as an adult, Jack's a bloody genius. Throughout my
childhood I saw him as a lucky buffoon. Yet with all his schemes, plots, disruption to order,
sacrifices, and planning ahead...man's got a 1000IQ.

They nailed the fact that the Dutchman crew is supposed to just look normal as long as the captain does his job correctly. So it’s sad knowing they’ll be confused when the next movies retcon the heck out of that.
Jack loves nothing more than the sea, and being the one and only Captain Jack Sparrow. So his personal purgatory was being in a completely dry endless land with hundreds of himself.
Keith Richards was Johnny Depp's inspiration for Jack Sparrow, which is why they got him to play his dad.
The scene where Jack comes riding over the dunes reminded me of another movie you should watch, Stephen Spielberg's TinTin. Absolutely reccomend it, top tier and underrated adventure film, not a pirate movie but very pirate adjacent. Pretty sure it's Spielberg's only animated movie, and they got James Bond playing the antagonist. Of course if you want more Johnny Depp vs. Bill Nighy action, the animated movie Rango is a must watch, an amazing Spaghetti Western in its own right.
I'm so sorry for these for thinking the next 2 movies will retain the quality or continuation of the trilogy. It's really a tragedy.

One of the fun trivia is - that Jack runs "funny" because he is used to being on the ship - on the waves. So he has excellent balance on board but being on land is awkward for him
One thing i think the characters forget is that its just will who cant come to shore. Elizabeth can come to sea at any time. She’s the bloody pirate king. They can see each other basically any time
