2024 - (Hopefully using on a 2003 Saturn ION, going to try and Remove/Test/Replace the Starter while it's on the Stands for an Oil Change)

Thank you so much for showing the wiring in detail!! For the life of me I couldn't figure out why my Saturn Ion battery wouldn't charge even though I installed 2 brand new alternators that tested good before install, and a new starter. Come to find out that I was wiring starter wrong and only figured it out after watching this. You sir, are the real MVP.

This was a great video, showing where the bolts are placed again after the starter was removed is key, I'll b trying my best to install it tomorrow! Wish me luck!

Just about to swap out the dtsrter from my parts car to my 06 beater Pontiac. Video was great to give me exactly what I needed beforehand.
oh man was that a job!!! I used a deep socket and a 3" extension (after I removed that emissions crap) PITA trying to find that upper bolt to loosen it, even more trying to find it when installing. What I did was put a small piece of tape on the bolt and the deep socket to hold the bolt so it wouldn't keep falling out and some gorilla tape to join the deep socket and the extension so the socket wouldn't get left behind. I noticed oil on the starter when i removed it (which I had to replace since car wouldn't start anymore) and noticed the oil pressure sensor was directly above the starter, when I disconnected the sensor harness from the sensor, couldn't believe the oil that came out of the sensor and what was all over the wiring connector. So I replaced the sensor since the starter was out. Got everything back together, she fired right up, thanks again for the informative video.

My daughters 2006 Ion has that piece you took off, I believe its the Air/Smog pump, but thank you very much for showing how to unbolt that, theres a junkyard not far from me Im going to practice on that car before I work on my daughters, thanks again.

Well done video. You were very clear and to the point which I appreciated. My only advice is that getting that hidden 15 mm back in the starter looks tricky so showing a video of you putting it back in might help people with a little frustration. Otherwise awesome, thanks!
For re-installing the hidden bolt...before you hoist the starter into position, put an O-ring on the 15mm bolt and position it about 2 “ from the front end of the bolt. Then put the bolt into the hole on the starter flange. Then put a second O-ring 3/4” back from the tip of the bolt. Hold the front end of the bolt in position, and then roll the first O-ring forward until it is flush with the exterior face of the flange. Your bolt should now be secure so it doesn’t drop out of the starter. Gently, get the starter to slide into position, insert the lower bolt and thread in until you have about 1/2 turn before tight. Noe use your socket/ratchet to probe around and find the head of the upper bolt. Check with a mirror to make sure your upper bolt is still in position, first. Good luck. Remember to tighten that lower bolt after the top one is snug.

Right on. Thanks, man! Mine just crapped out on me and I'm not in a position to pay that kind of labor. Fortunately, I was a dealership tech like 20 years ago. Pontiac had the Sunfire (Chevy Cavalier equivalent) back then, but I wasn't sure how these Cobalts were set up.

I can barely reach the back bolt will it be OK if I take the casing off the starter so I can reach it better that will be the 2 long bolts and is it safe
i took the starter out just with an extension, without taking any other parts out,just used the left hand to locate the hiden bolt,u have to have the bright extension,no to long ,beteter 2 short once taped togheter
Would this work on a 09 pontiac g5 4 cyl. Lol, i got a lady wanting for me to change hers, just cuz i told her i changed a fuel pump on one, usually all the car i fix is by looking at UA-cam videos and my dad tought me as well at hes shop, i just watch UA-cam to kind of guide me on the right path
I believe that mystery part with the hoses is a smog pump.
Steel or aluminum? I'm worried I'm going to wrench on those two bolts too hard putting it back together and crack something?

Thanks for the vid! Used this to replace the starter on my '10 Cobalt - only difference is that there's a plug instead of the 8mm connection. Otherwise exactly the same. That hidden bolt is a PAIN! I think the part you need to remove to access the starter is part of the air intake??
Did anyone else have any issues reconnecting those hoses to that air intake thingy in front of the starter??
@@ec9121 I did, one wasn't connected properly and threw a check engine light. Just make sure the clips are solidly connected and you'll be fine.

Great question, the second wire you are referring goes to the alternator yes you are correct
Same set up on my 09 but I have a question after my car gets hot (normal temp) and I shut it off it won't crank at all just turns the dash lights on but I can take the water hose and spray the engine and starter well everything and it will start right up, my dad said it's got a bad connection is why and that's why after you cool it , it works smh but I'm a big feller and my car is the lo profile 17s like as model, any tips would be appreciated
I think imma pull the intake to get that top bolt got bad equilibrium it's like I'm dizzy looking up smh

Thanks for watching, I would recommend to change the colant sensor this might cost you around 30bucks. But if you happen to have a OBD 2 scanner that can read the engine temperature try plug-in it in and check the temp before you shut off the car and after. My guess of what you are describing would suggest a possible coolant temp malfunction. The coolant temp may not be sending the correct temp to the ecm but again this is suggested idea I would need to really check the car when you experience the problem. I hope this may help you.

Thanks for posting! I have a 2010 with 254,000 miles and original starter. I am thinking of changing my starter before it quits working. How many miles did you have on yours? Anyone else how many miles did your put on yours before changing?
I'm at 178k and mine just went out. No idea if it was the original or not, I got it off the lot with 169k.

Can I remove both terminals from the battery? Just be safe. I working on later year cobalt and was wondering if the same applies.
Yes you can, to be on the safe side.
No need for taking any of that off you can do it all you need to do is Jack up the car and put it on jack stands both boats are 15 mm they can be accessed from underneath my left hand is paralyzed I did this with one hand and it pulls right out
How long did you take to replace the starter?
I had to remove the air intake manifold and the fuel injectors just to get the one bolt on top
O.o wow, that must have been 1 hr on top of the time already spend fixing the car.

What wires go connected to the starter?
the positive battery cable (red) and the solenoid wire
Thank you for the early reply, it's because we got the starter hooked up but when I connect the battery the car will start turning on by itself without the keys in the ignition. Would you happen to know why?
if you connected the terminals correctly, i think you might have a faulty starter. try replacing the starter with a different one.
before you change the starter again, try replacing the starter relay. sometimes the starter relay might get stuck in the open position.
Because I got a starter from a junkyard, and I went back to where my car is stranded at and I hooked up the wires you did. I hooked the battery up and it started turning without the keys in the ignition

@@oscars-autorepair3236 here what happen i had the car half way on with the heat on i try to start it and it was dead i jump the battery and turn it on and it starts making a weird noise like a misfire ...i leave it running for 5 min turn it off and back on its fine i get to my friend house and stayed there a hr i try to start it and it only came on with a crazy nosie like something was grinding at this point i smelled burnt and it stop because the battery died out ....took it to charge at autozone and now it would make a noise when i connected it and here I'm

Which oftentimes will fill up with water on the cobalts and your computer will shut down the car.

I believe that people who don't list the year of the car should have a ghost pepper jammed up there "exhaust"
