Love my 07 Cobalt 2.4l. It's very reliable. Also cheap and easy to repair.
My son-in-law give me his 2008 Chevy Cobalt 2.2L with only 104,000 miles, so your DIY was just what I needed. The old spark plug insulator tip was almost non-existent and I am almost done my DIY to do list on this Cobalt and it will almost be like new from A to Z. So, I just wanted to say thank you for caring about the DIY home mechanic.

Great Video. Easy engine to change spark plugs.
For people that don't have compress air they can use a shop vacuum to remove the dirt before they take out the spark plugs.
I use a spark plug socket that has a magnet in it. I like that better than a socket with the rubber plug.
Me to I have lost those rubber do dads on the plug after you pull the socket. Alway on recessed plugs to. I got a few good long reach pliers so I’m not complaining.

Great help
You can't stress enough how delicate iridium/platinum plug tips are! I would not recommend first timers trying to gap them, because of the risk of damaging them and also because they come close enough from the factory 99% of the time.
I used to also use anti-seize on plugs until I removed the same plugs I installed about 3 years and 50k miles later. I thought I was pulling threads when removing them! The stuff gunked up from heat and made it a pain to remove. Also they are coated with an anti-corrosive plating already, so the anti-seize isn't as helpful as like on a suspension bolt for example.
Just my opinions from my limited experience though.

paging dr eric o idk if you tried it yet but the castle brake lite grease works great as a dielectric grease too little pricey but very good we used it on all our star pack strobe lights and safty vision back up cameras on the garbage trucks i think it was around 30 for a vaccume tube cheese wiz can or they had those little 35mm film projectors contaners of it wow that ages me film strips and overhead projectors yes grade school late 70 s lol great work keep it up. wait this is from 3 years ago my bad

I have heard that the chrome plated ramp plated gap checkers are inaccurate because they are plated AFTER they are measured.
Great video one of the main issues I have with modern vehicles are the dang 50,000 different styles of electrical connectors and how to take them lose. They are usually in a spot I can't see them either. If you have any tricks please share. Thanks

Hey Mr. O I imagine this is about the same process for 2.4l HHR...other than removing the cover/air box?
They are the non gasket plugs? I have a 09 Accent SE and I decided to gunk the engine, seems with all the engine covers the coils still got wet and it was running on 2 cylinders. I pulled the coils out and saw they [2] were arching out on the plug wells, bought 4 new ones on ebay for 36.50 including shipping, while I was waiting I replaced plugs, air filter and PCV- 1st time I ever torqued plugs=20 ft lbs. I just used 2 cans of Gunk on my 96 Jeep GC 5.2 and no problems

Another great vid. I have an issue with the plastic engine cover. You have to remove the oil fill cap in order to remove the engine cover then yank on the cover and dump all the surrounding dirt into the engine thru the oil fill hole. I was blowing dirt away as best I could with compressed air before removing the oil cap. I have since removed the plastic engine cover permanently unless someone can give me a good reason that leaving it off might cause a problem.

My electrical connectors are stuck on there pretty good. Any tips for me? I tried grabbing it with pliers and even take the black coils out and yank them apart but to no avail.
Hello, Eric. If you are using a torque wrench, how much is too much ? My wrench was off by 5 ft-lb and instead of 15 ft-lb I did 20 ft-lb... I removed the plug, replaced and tight it to 180 in-lb with another wrench, just worried if I damaged the threads.

Oh the good old Ecotec 2.2L...where valve seats wear out before the spark plugs! The one I just did didn't even have that stupid plastic cover on it to begin with...that's why the directions confused me "remove head cover #2"...WTF? I think it's a Eurotrash Opel motor design, since the timing tensioner said "made in Germany" lol

No offense Ivan, but 'our' Opel motor design got trashed when GM took over. Actually Opels are pretty good cars...as long as GM leaves them alone. Chevy once tried to get a foot into the German market, just when they realized their own brand Opel was better than what they offer to the rest of the planet.
I myself am a JDM fan, but I think the 'Eurotrash' attitude seems to be a bit over the top, not every European Car is a Fiat or Volkswagen (and I think these indeed are 'Trash'). Every manufacturer has it's weaknesses or stupid ideas, but I think there is a reason why Mercedes can charge twice the price and still sell the cars, because there is 'some value' in them.
By the way, just take this as constructive criticism, I'm a huge fan of both your channels and find them really valuable. And don't ask me how I dug out this video...just popped up as if it was new...

I got a 08 236,000 miles same plugs when I bought it lol
I suddenly developed intermittent shaking after fueling in my 2009 cobalt 2.2 l . It has 121000 miles. I put it a can of heet in red bottle. I drove it a few hrs and it ran fine then it returned. I have been using premium non ethanol fuel for 12 years. It has original spark plugs. I got code P300- Random misfire. This only occurs occasionally. Could it be water in gas. There were torrential rains in area about 10 inches in past week. Could it be related to spark plugs? Would it be better to use ethanol gas in humid summer to prevent condensation of water . Any thoughts. Thank you. I wish I was in NYS now or would have you look it over. But I'm in Iowa.
So I habe the ss 2006 and I can not get the t27 bolts on the top cover to move at all ive twisted two bits any suggestions

@@SouthMainAuto dielectric grease is my best friend, more then rtv or anti-sieze. I like to put a VERY thin coating on the ends of all my battery starter alternator and body ground points after I take a brass brush to them, keeps any corrosion from forming due to moisture. You just have to remain aware that dielectric grease is NOT conductive. So only use it when you KNOW for certain your connection is making positive contact.
2 questions. Is it possible to tell visually if the plugs need to be replaced? Is dielectric grease the same as dielectric silicone compound?
Plug gap can grow or rather the electrodes get vaporized away during use leaving a larger gap than original so yes, you can see that. Often it's not so bad on some plugs and if they are burning clean they don't need replacing, but why make more work for yourself? Just change them all to keep on schedule and be done with it. When they fail internally you can't see a good one from a bad one though which makes it all very much a crap shoot and not worth trying unless it's a lawn mower. Yes dielectric compound is silicone grease, it's also thermal heat sink grease for your CPU's heat sink for example.
matt spark plugs cant be visually inspected by eye. unless they are clearly broken lol. but i just usually replace plugs on a service interval or if i have proof that is my issue.
My chevy cobalt 09 lt starts then shakes then dies..I changed the oil yesterday but never changed the filter until this morning..could that be the cause? I also changed my spark plugs but nothing..it starts the rattles then dies..I need some help south main

correction they did not make a 2002 cobalt in 2002. the cobalt came in the fall of 2004 as a 2005 model
Correct it was the Caviler before than. J platform. Cobalts were D plats.

Hi Eric, I have a 2.9L four cylinder 2007 Chevy Colorado with about 72K miles and the process for changing the spark plugs is similar... remove air intake, remove coils, remove plugs. BUT when I tried to remove the spark plugs they did not want to turn. I used a regular ratchet and pushed really really hard and they would not come off. I decided I didn't want to break the cylinder head on a truck I still have to pay on for another 50 months so I stopped at that point and put it all back together. Do you have any advice in this situation? I think I should just take it to a shop but I really don't want to pay $95 for something so simple - the only advantage that I see is that if they break something it is their fault, right? By the way, the engine was cold when I tried to change the spark plugs (it was sitting overnight) and the actual reason I am changing the spark plugs is I don't get very good fuel economy (16MPG), many people with these trucks report 20+ and because I have a rough idle issue. Thank you for any advice, your videos are informative (and funny!)
if your having performance issues it might not be your spark plugs. i gained 3 mpg in my recently engine swapped crown vic by eliminating vacuum leaks. such a common cause for performance issues. but if your plugs are 72k miles old, maybe changing plugs isnt so bad.
Michael Staake make sure your turning the ratchet the right way. left to loosen right to tighten. it should come out. with a Lil force won't hurt.
Michael Staake also doesn't hurt to add fuel additives to you gas. like Lucas fuel treatment or seafood. my two favorite brands

How good are these cobalts, my roomate has found a "deal" on one. I'm a honda/toyota guy but I know some of these cars aren't to terrible.

Rick James I got mine pretty much new with a rebuilt title. It's a 2009 so it has the VVT version of the 2.2 Ecotec, and I've put 87XXX miles on it with nothing more than oil changes, a wheel bearing, and a camshaft position actuator (44 dollars from Autozone. 10 minute fix). Runs like day 1, and I'd drive it across the country today if I had to.
If you take care of them they run forever. With that said. Make sure it was well kept. GM used a lot of super cheap parts. Including but not limited to ball joints, and emmisions parts. Also make sure every recall has been done. There was like 16 different ones I think.

I have never understood the point of using a plug installer or vacuum line to start the threads. when a plug socket and extension works just fine

Just remove the 4 bolts no need to remove the connectors, they can break

Hey any cobalt owners here have problems with the signal not working on front and rear but only on the right passenger side and same side bottom brake light not coming on when pressing the brake? The same right signal parking light for the signal will only stay on when headlights are on at night.
Ive changed the light bulb for the rear brake light, it only turns on for a second when opening with alarm. Im stumped and tired of this pos!
-Changed an alternator and fuel pump, had electrical problems in the past especially the key getting stuck in ignition.
***** If the key is stuck in the ignition in the run/on position, that's actually a recall. I had that problem a couple years ago. Took it to the dealership and they replaced the ignition cylinder.
Yukon Silvermoon yea that stuck key happened in 07, n the key has one half in the ignition since it was my mother who used it and the amount of keychains she had on it snapped the key, i dont have money for a new key so it resides there until i take it for the recall.
***** Jesus Christ. Does your mother do triathlon training and hang her weights on the poor key? I know that caused a lot of the cars to turn off while driving, but actually snapping the key is crazy.
Yukon Silvermoon lmao no she had heavy keychains like the disney ones n some little metal shoe n with the addition of the amount of house keys, It just gave. Luckily we made a extra for the doors but we had a alarm on it. But the driver side door stays locked when the alarm opens. This pos is having problems pop up since middle of 2013
***** Wow, that's strange. I guess it's just a case by case basis, because I have a 2009 model with a little over 87K on it. Besides normal maintenance and recalls, I've only had to replace a camshaft position actuator, which costed me 44 bucks and took ten minutes to replace. Oh, and also, the door speakers are crap on the cars. They aren't well insulated, and shorted out with the smallest amount of moisture. Replaced them with a pair from Memphis Audio.

I read that AC delco does not recommend anti seize? Why not torque?
Antiseize is a personal preference thing.
After the first few hundred spark plugs the elbow calibrates itself to the right torque.
Thats great for you but what about the guy whose elbow is changing a plug for the first time , GM says not to use anti seize back when heads were steel ,elbow torque wasn't as big and who had a torque wrench that could get down between the head and firewall or upper control arm . Thanks for the tips

Most spark plugs have a "tighten until it touches then go 1/8 or 1/4 turn more". You just need to look on the manufacturers website.
Getting them out to s usually harder than refitting them.
