The most appropriate and sanitary "oil" to use in a colostomy bag would be a personal lubricant like Astro glide, KY brand, etc. You don't want to use the one in the tube that's more of a gel but the actual liquid that you can squeeze out of a clear little bottle. Pharmacies even have generic versions of this. Just put 1 teaspoon of it in the bag, close it, and then rub the bag front and back around and around until it's sufficiently coated inside. Cooking oil's have a tendency to turn in texture, smell, and color. Oil gets "old," whereas personal lubricant will stay much cleaner.

Neta, KY is a lubricant so why can't the gel be used? I was just wondering how to direct oil from a bottle into a Stoma bag and the tube sounded good because that a sort of spout for direction.

You can try out stoma shields which allow the output to move away from the stoma. This is especially helpful when you hear clothing over your bag. Also, I have had good luck with convex bags. When I apply the flange, I don't use a complete barrier ring. I use about a third of it. I shape it so that it seals around the edge of the opening and I leave a little bit into the inside of the opening so that is turtle necks the stoma to help seal around it. I stopped using powder as I figure it is not allowing the ring to stick the base of the stoma. I also warm up the flange and barrier ring with a heating pad before applying it to my skin to make it stickier.

Pancaking is not a problem for me as I use the clue on vents, and have a syringe that fits . I can squirt a bit of water into bag and the grasp the bag in front of the stoma , pull it out away from the stoma and shake it up and down a bit and the output will fall away and into the bag !

The ‘lubricating’ deodorants don’t work for me. Olive oil cooking spray is better although be careful to not get any on the adhesive part of the bag. I got a dry silicon spray from the hardware store it is called Selley’s EZY glide and I spray my bags the day before using and peg them to the clothesline to dry. EZY glide spray works the best. Plus I’ve started using drainable pouches and washing them out with a bidet sprayer hose or bottle of water. With the water be careful to not get the adhesive wet as the bag won’t stick and is likely to leak

Yikes! I wouldn’t want a dry silicone spray around my stoma! Olive oil or any cooking oil for that matter or Pam cooking spray. Baby oil or even argon oil for hair has worked for me. Coloplast Brava deodorizing lubricant is popular. I just got mine today so I’m testing it out.

Just going to my 3rd week of colostomy living & what a nightmare it can be. Maybe I'd feel & do better if I could get a pain pill but God forbid I get addicted, my Dr actually said this to me. Your worried that at 70 years old I'm going to get addicted? What do you care, I'm just about dead anyway and not for nothing but I have to live in horrible pain due to radiation destroying my stomach for life?! Something should be done about these new rules with any opioids which should be monitored of course
But, boygotting all or any medication is definitely not the way.. Actually it's crazy when they say why am I taking anxiety medicine? Cause I live in today's world, simple. Turn on the news, if you don't need an anxiety pill you will after watching.... Or your crazy! PeriodT

I have found drinking more water helps avoid thick output and the effects from it. I also don't use bags with a filter to avoid the possible leaks that can happen in bed when the output gets pushed up to the top of the bag

I use the lubricant "Adapt" where I get all my ostomy supplies. I experience pancaking sometimes (like now) and it drives me crazy. I'm 3 years into being an estimate. I cannot figure out why this happens (the output thickening). But the lubricant does not always work. Will try the oil you mention to add to my regular lubricant. Hope it helps. My skin gets raw from changing the bag ao often.

For me, tight clothes and my stoma do not work together, at all. Also, for me, vented bags don't work, because the front and back walls of the bag stick together much worse than with a non vented bag, making pancaking that much worse. The oil works some to help, but I also need a little ballooning to keep the walls from sticking together. I also, had to forget about belts and go to suspenders.

@@gutmylifeback7926 Thank you for the courteous reply. I am 69 years old, and 4 years into having a colostomy. I am still learning what works for me. I appreciate your suggestions and tips. I think you have got a great handle on what works for you, and it will get better. I will add one suggestion, which I think will work for everybody; Always keep a new and cut bag on your person, and some wipes, if at all possible, or the wipes, at least in your vehicle, even if just going away from the house for a few minutes. Emergencies will happen, not just might, they will happen. I keep the new bag in my hip pocket, in a quart, ziplock storage bag, which will be useful for disposal of the old bag.

I loved wearing jeans too. But the last thing you want is to block that lil red spout. So I ponied up $59.95 for a "stoma dome." It's a small, flesh colored circle of plastic. Looks a bit like a small 'frisbee'. Uses adhesive crescents of Velcro to affix itself to the outside of the pouch. Very cleverly blocks pressure that will come from seat belts & Levi's so the output can escape out the open end of the "cut out" dome. Works well during sleep rollover. Pricey but a nice addition to an active lifestyle. Used with a "stealth-belt" ($99.95) & I feel invincible. I hope this helps. I'm on my 3rd year but only had the "dome" for a couple a week's before I lost the little thing somewhere. Medical appliances are expensive darn it...

I have been ileostomy for 15 years. At first, it was so water-soluble that I didn't have much trouble, but for the past few years I have been suffering from pancakes and it is unpleasant. I have tried various measures, but it depends largely on my diet and water, so I have to leave it to my physical condition after all. I'm wondering if orthotic devices with some epoch-making ingenuity around the stoma will be cheap and popular.

Yoga pants and leggings have been my go to. I used to wear only jeans, but after my surgery, I just didn't feel comfortable anymore. Now I wear a lot of tunic tops and leggings. It is totally not my style, but I got used to it, and now I love it. It doesn't have to be "mawmaw" clothes...lots of cute outfits. Also, I wear prints now, because it doesn't show the pouch as much. Solid (especially light colored) leggings are asking for it (in case of a leak). I also wanted to say that "jeggings" are something I wear a lot too. It's difficult, but if you find some high quality ones they can look quite real with a tunic and boots. I even sometimes wear "real" jeans that have a lot of stretch (aka skinny jeans) My image was what I wrestled with most believe it or not. I know that sounds silly, but still looking good is important to me. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask :)

I'm only 12 days post op and my bag only seems to produce each 24 hours and yet it's fully blows up with air about 3 times per day. I have noticed that the stool is always sitting in top of my atoma, so I guess that's pancaking and blocking the vent?
I'm in Australia so sine if the products I've hear here I don't know
I was wondering if baby oil would work? I use a two piece closed, as although only day 12 it's quite thick.
I'm guessing in a closed you simply add it through the opening?

Also, there is a bit of poo right around my stoma. I use a barrier ring, and it gets in there. Do you have any ideas as to how to get this poo off.

Shower? I hand hold the shower head and direct it right at the little red gremlin, Soap and water, I'm using a Natura SurFit wafer from Convatec and it's got a moldable stoma opening requiring no scissors to form fit and once applied naturally closes tightly against my stoma thus almost completely eliminating the caking problem. I typically get a week per set up using one wafer and one bag.
