I've got an idea, don't build right on the beach. There should be a 1 mile set back for ALL building. It used to be that there was natural vegetation that formed a protective barrier for these storms. But crooks and developers plowed all that under and made a concrete desert where there was once a lush, beautiful beach. The whole coast of Florida, both east and west, is so ugly and destroyed with high rise condos. It's heart breaking what these developers have been allowed to do. But no doubt they'll take our money (the tax payers) to cover their losses and rebuild just as it was before....again and again and again.

I don't want my money bailing out rich people who live on the beach. You take a big gamble buying there and you need to deal with your losses. When the hurricanes went through in 2003 (Jean, Frances, Charlie, Irma) my friend lived in a modest inland home that was destroyed. She had a heck of a time getting money from the insurance company or finding a contractor to fix the house but meanwhile the wealthy folks on Hutchinson Island were getting their payouts and FEMA money pronto.

Towns and builders are both culprits here. Towns want the added real estate tax revenue. And builders want to market the proximity to the water and the fantastic views. The lost people are the buyers who pay exorbitant amounts in monthly condo fees. Then come the annual special purpose capital fees that are never known until a building wide need arises. They drove a type of wood into the ground that petrified over, and over and over and over into the lagoons to create the foundations they sit on now. Mind you this was 5th century! The worst part is the flooding and erosion. I'm a born and raised Floridian of Venitia /Napolitano, and Viking ancestry. We [they] did amazing things to survive back then. They have to move. It's all over. Call it what you want, this is just the beginning. Think I'm wrong? Then go buy some property there.

How about people who were away when this happened, and any pets that might be inside, and starving/dehydrating.
Let owners in to collect pets and belongings on low tide, non-windy non-stormy days.

😮😮What is next? Have the house checked for entry to remove personal items , then tear it down. It is sad, but a house built on sand is doomed to fail. 😢 😢

Why does planning allow people to build that close to the sea... it's inevitable this would happen ...just a matter of time. there should not be any structure within a 2 mile radius of the sea

Living on the beach is awesome but risky. Kiss your home goodbye hopefully your insurance will cover your loss.

Millionaires. 2nd and 3rd homes. Not much empathy here. They can get another home after they file loss on insurance. No big deal.

"look at this devastation". Compared to Ian, that's a walk in the park.
I don't really feel sorry for the rich people that build on the beach and then whine when the soft sand does what soft sand does.

What’s going to happen? Can you build a giant sea wall and pump sand into the area, or build pier & beam footings to support the building?
