Our hearts go out to Mark who is trying to salvage his childhood home. All this water Damage was from Helene and NOW. Milton is coming,, so sorry ,,,,,,glad he and his father are safe. Im praying for all of us.
I am a welder. It's so easy to build a steel fence with inserts you bolt on that make it solid like a wall during a storm and prevent water from coming in. Any water in the yard is drained to a pump.
I'm from Pinellas and I had a dream about a year ago that I was exactly in Treasure Island walking from the beach between the condos while water rushed through them onto to street causing chaos. I thought the dream was weird because this area is not prone to tsunamis and it wasn't like a big tsunami wave either just knee-high water rushing through.
My neighbor used spray foam around the door, which worked, but he didn't put it up high enough, and water came in above the 6" of foam. Here on Davis Island, all the first floors of everything were destroyed.
I live in South Tampa and am first seeing the impact its had, I literally had this same thought - can you use spray insulation foam on the entire outside of your home maybe 5-6ft up top to bottom and would that be a solution? Great business idea especially if storm surge is expected
I get the chills seeing this. We went through this in NJ with storm Sandy in 2012. My Dad lived on a lagoon. He was 96 and in Oct of 2012 when the storm hit. I went down to rescue him as the water was up to the foundation. We went down days later to see the catastrophe. The water line was 3-4 ft on the first floor, and this was a cape cod on a foundation. He stayed with me at my house in central Jersey. My Dad passed 4 months later as his health went downhill after having to leave his castle. The house is gone!
Job so strong faith with God and said,"Naked I came forth from my mother's womb, and naked shall I go back again. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD!" In all this Job did not sin, nor did he say anything disrespectful of God.

Make sure you keep those letters . They are a part of history. You should make copies and give them to the United States Military. Whatever you do. Do not give the originals away.
This was not a direct hit, yet they predicted a 5 to 8ft storm surge in that area. What a surprise, most first floor areas were affected. Why people would stay on an island when they predict a 5 to 8ft storm surge, is just crazy. So blame the authorities for miscalculating the storm surge, unbelieveable. Casualties happen when PEOPLE DO NOT LEAVE.
Bleach doesn't eradicate mold. It gets to surface mold breaking the mold protein shell and spores spread. The moisture from the bleach helps the mold thrive especially the deep mold.
Omg. How is someone that close to water and acting shocked? From there… you expect to be homeless every storm. I kept a giant trunk I evacuated each time to keep valuable items.
Thank goodness these are concrete homes which are rarely being built nowadays. They are salvageable. Hopefully they had flood insurance. So sorry for your losses, sir.. I also live in Pinellas County. I was so freaked out that I spent an entire day packing up keepsakes and valuables and took them to a storage unit. My mobile home community ended up suffering very little damage. There is a very fickle aspect to hurricanes.

I'm in shock - my mom sentme this video becausewe were curious after MIlton, as our family has loved Treasure Island for vacation for almost 60 years. That this was Helene... wow, I thought it went further north, but as he said, it was the storm surge and not the winds or rain. Now with Milton... I don't know if my uncle and kids and grandkids will make it down next year, but whenever they do, it will be very different, I'm sure. But, as he said, the people are safe. If you read this far, I even wrote an ebook during the lockdown set in Treasure Island, "Hidden Treasure - A Girl's Story of Faith and Baseball in an Alternate Baseball HIstory. Might find time to make it a print book someday here now and buy a few to donate if there's charity auctions or something, I'm not sure. (The White Sox move to Tampa in '89 as they almost did in our history.) I wish there was more we could do to help. My church does have a fund being raised to support victims of the hurricanes, I will be giving to that.
And now, only a week later, a hurricane predicted to be catastrophic is off the Gulf Coast, soon to bear down on Pinellas again. Sir, please get your father and those letters and get the hell out of there.

There is a reason why the new codes require the first level is non livable storage, my friends father bought a house there in 02 when the government was giving out 75k grants to raise your house, of course everyone who does still builds out the down stairs, I know so many down there with totally built out 1st floors, they lost big money.
You can tell the older homes are not elevated. I don’t know what year the cities or counties implemented laws requiring homes to be elevated. I know a friend on Saint Pete Beach on the water, she’s in a new home and it is high above the water, And the first level is a garage.
