  • “Right now, there are giant chunks of pools just sitting in the sand in the ocean.” Several homes on the Daytona Beach area coastline in Florida have collapsed. Wilbur by the Sea homes are hanging and falling onto the Volusia County beach they overlook. Seawalls were weakened six weeks before Tropical Storm Nicole by the effects of Tropical Storm Ian.

It's kinda obvious why we shouldn't live so close to the beach !

I've lived in Florida for 56 years (40 in Fernandina Beach) It's nothing you can do with the Ocean. A hurricane will do damage and it is sad to say but if you have your life you are blessed, you can always get stuff. That has been my mindset fleeing from hurricanes through shelter or leaving the state to be safe. You never know if you will have a home but at least you have your life and family.

For more than half a century, living so close to the shorleine in the US and Canada has not been a huge problem. Sadly those days may be coming to an end! This summer may have seen the fewest hurricanes in a while but Fiona, Ian and Nicole sent a message of destruction in FLA, Puerto Rico and Atlantic Canada.

These events are all providing valuable case studies for engineering students. Even the seawalls an individual property owner can build did not hold up. water went under and around them, still undermining the foundation despite the structure is still in place. Still a total loss according to any inspector . if you cannot elevate and push back your dwelling enough to where you leave at least 8 additional feet for rising tides, this is always the result. in the NE, after Sandy, building codes were all changed and you could Not rebuild unless you followed the code exactly. Time to realize nature is just taking back what was hers. look at geo mapping of sea levels and where shorelines were over the last few hundred years and you will see so many coastal areas that WEre underwater

I guess people should look at the homes that are still standing that are next to the homes that have been destroyed for examples of correct seawalls. In addition the homes that have fallen were extended to far into the beach. I have been thinking about the condos. The back wall and sides of the condo near the ocean should be sea walls in addition to a sea wall. If you observe other homes are washed out but still standing due to concrete pylons!

By the sea will invariably end up in the sea as evidenced in the UK well before the industrial revolution, the invention of climatologists and with few hurricanes. The USA is just possibly too young to have learnt these lessons. An average Winter of North Sea storms would have done for a lot of these places in a single year.

In 1960 hurricane Donna eroded that beach way worse , alot of those seawalls were built right after and the dead men (cables that hold wall up) rusted since , no seawall maintenance and this is the result , also a 1984 noreaster did similar erosion and the seawalls put up after that 3 day massacre actually did perfectly so climate activists think that over . It's a solar cycle .
