I got it today, I personally just love the way it looks and I get a good cup regardless of using WDT, the shaker or both. Bit sad about the ring it leaves on the coffee grounds when you place it on top of the portafilter. I doesn't change the coffee by a meaningful amount in my opinion, but it's just fun to shake up the routine. The shaker homogenizes the coffee fines more into the larger grounds compared to wdt where it can settle at the base of the porta filter especially when you tap it to settle the grounds only to WDT and agitate those fines more downward. From the last shot comparison, while the tiger striping looks nicer for pictures, its clearly seperated, whereas the shaker is more homogenized as a liquid now, more blended, and it might take longer to become a single stream because the water is flowing more fully throughout the entire puck and not just the center, thus slower to centralize into a single stream. Just a guess tho.

I have the Craig Lynn shaker. One tap gets rid of the stuck coffee. It makes a great dosing cup because the grinds hit the little peak in the middle and this breaks up the grinds. I give it a good shake, tap and then pour onto my funnel because straight to the filter creates a ring on the outside. I then WDT. Combination gives me a really good distribution.

Enjoyed the intro and the humour in this video :) Well done.
I think I mentioned the alcohol part on one of your Instagram's post, and I tried it when I got the shaker a couple days later... and I still get static. I use your same method, tamp the shaker on the kitchen top and then use a brush to brush off the ground. I also don't put the Bomber's shaker directly on the portafilter, since it leaves a wide enough ring which requires me to mess up with the puck. I do however WDT the top (just a few millimetres) to level the puck before tamping. This way I'm avoiding having a massive difference of concentration. I didn't do enough tests to say it's better than WDT or not, but I enjoy the coffee I get. The shots are not Instagram friendly and they are fast. But who cares! :)

Try shaking with pour over too? I'm curious if that changes anything, I thought I had worse / over extracted results the few times I tried with pour overs. But might have been my coffee.
I noticed as well shaking smooths out the coffee but makes it more boring and lacks acidity, maybe also tasted more blended (less clarity but not sure) apparently limiting to just about 3 shakes will keep some acidity!
So for most of your testing you didn't notice much of a difference? I thought you did mention it's usually smoother?
I think your WDT tool could be better, the widely available cheap or self printable 'peoples WDT tool' is a nice design because it spreads the needles out a bit more, I also don't put a needle in the center part, that way no bunching /clumping the coffee together.
I have a few videos talking about my tool / WDT choices I think :D

I have exactly same shaker and i am using around more than 1 month. Actually I don’t realize any significant better taste or something but somehow taste is different than the classic preparation. But I didn’t like the shaking action and mostly i prefer the classical prep technique. About the static electric, if you spray some water to outside of shaker after shaking and tap it couple of times to table, all coffee release from surface. I am using same technique also for hand grinder. Because if you spray water to beans before grinding, hand grinder burr can be have sticky coffee mud.

I never understood what it changes to the puck for people like me that press the puck very hard at the end of the process just prior to pulling a shot. I mean what does it change if there is any clumps if everything is compacted at the end leaving no space between the various particules of coffee? First?! I have been trying to shake with my dosing cup, mixing in additional wdt of the top layer occasionally (this is my routine lately), it seems ever so slightly better. But it could just be confirmation bias and is pretty comparable to my usual routine.

Seen a really weird coffee grinder with very little reviews from a brand thats been getting attention lately - MHW 3bomber. Their "R3" grinder costs the same as a Kingrinder K6, with 48mm burrs but also a built in sieve for filtering fines?! Would be cool to see someone try it genuinely

I use a timemore 064s with rpm set to lowest setting and a cafelat robot, and to get the same flow rate with shaking as wdt I need to go around 1.5 "lines" finer. I dont know what the lines on the 064s mean in terms of real measurement but the shaking definitely causes faster flow to the point where I want to adjust my grind finer. Blind shaker only good for filter coffee. For espresso it is nightmare. For espresso the workflow is stupidly bad. 1st it leave badly rentention to shaker. Meaning if u got 18g, u left with 17.8g like that. And u still need to use wdt to distribute.
Literally wdt is enough for you for espresso. The workflow is just stupidly bad for that small different. But for pour over, it definately give u the best workflow and result. With bigger grind size it wont leave much retention to the shaker. And the fine will go to bottom parts. So for the water flow it will enchance the flow. Rather without shaker the particle is mess up. For pour over it definately worth it and not to mention the workflow is simple. It just means u change the cup for coffee powder. nothing much.

"Will their children need to beg on the streets in China with the abandonment of WDT?" Oh the humanity of it all. Such sadness. Instead of "shaking" vs using WDT, perhaps we should return to the really important oft repeated medieval question still needing an answer, "How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?"
