In the time from 00:39:00 to approx. 00:40:10, why use Wall Formation when controlling fighter-size craft...? I always use claw formation when using attack craft, and X-Formation or other flexible formation when using corvettes. I reserve Wall Formation for frigates, destroyers and cruisers.
@@NobleKorhedron About the only thing I can think of is that Wall spreads out the damage. Pretty bad for capital ships where Fighters and Corvettes have to focus on weakspots, but against enemy fighters who have so little health that's not as much of a problem.
@@swordman2000 I don't know if I could agree I honestly didn't care to much for the story in Cata, it just really didn't feel like it followed the original story, it would have made a great stand alone but didn't really suit the original imho
The black and white models they use for their story telling are so impactful. The part where the Bentusi are entombed within their ships was terrifying
The real hero is whoever had the foresight to design emergency jettison protocols for the lower decks that seem to be able to work within seconds. Whole galaxy is going beastmode if they hadn't
From what I remember, because of how limited the Kiith-Somtaaw's access was to the Motherships Manufacturing facilities, they had to take turns to build whatever pieces they could in the small amount of time they were given. As such, their ships were meant to be assembled from larger, more easily manufactured chunks (hence being able to build Support & Utility Modules to flesh out their capabilities) The lower decks were one such chunk, so I'm sure they were able to just cut the ties that initially bound the two halves together. In a small way, adapting to those initial limitations may have saved the galaxy.
Kiith-Somtaaw was given a very limited time of 45 days for the shipyards, they came up with 2 mining ships and a research vessel. FAAL-CORUM was the first ship built, during its building Kiith-Somtaaw decided they needed a flexible ship. While building FAAL-CORUM they were already redesigning KUN-LAAN to be completely modular by the time she hit the shipyard to be built.
@generalagondray the history for these guys were sadder. But they ended up teaching a lesson that would remain into the homeworld 2 and 3 campaign protocol. Mothership modules were added and independently built manufacturers helped them on missions away from any lost point or home.
@@michaelandreipalon359 It's kinda sad, considering the Kith Somtaav were "rewarded", so there's a belief that these Kith Councilors were never punished for their transgression, but actually promoted to leading While i do understand their reasoning - the entire point is that it's POSSIBLE to study the beast under safe circumstances, and the Imperialist Taiidan proved it in their secret laboratory. This could probably been averted if they've given the module to someone more competent. Alas, and again i state - the fate of the councilors uknown, assuming that they just "pushed the accident under the rug" like most politicians and claimed responsibility for destroying it.
WE.... LIVE.... Parts, do not flee. We... want. Beacon Brain. The way the multiple voices crack and overlap, the occasional strangled scream, like one of the constituent beings gets a brief moment of lucidity or freedom, only to be squashed once more by the hivemind. It's horrific, because you don't really get to see what's actually happening inside the ship, just the outer expression. Stuff like Dead Space, you see the meatwalls. In this game, you have to imagine the meatwalls.
The scene of the KUUN-LANN Commander shouting at the Bantusi is phenomenal. His fury at the audacity that they think they can just outrun The Beast, their woeful breakdown as they realize what kind of atrocity they're commiting by destroying those who seek their aid. It's brilliant. It's amazing. "At least The Beast doesn't pretend to be RIGHTEOUS!!!"
"Afraid? AFRAID?! Oh, the Bentusi clad with the best technologies get to be afraid, and run away! While the rest of us with our flickerlives must scrape and scrimp to get by, yet we are pushing the Beast back for the next day! Do you think we too do not fear?! And yet we fight, while YOU run!"
Yea... sadly they forgot that they SLAUGHTERED the Hiigarans couple thousand years ago too... The Exile? The Kushan? Taiidan fault? Not quiet, or at least not only. Btw. The Saajuk was powerless against those Bentusi vessels back then, THATS how powerfull they where once. They would have eaten the beast within mere moments if not for their grief and self depression over what they did to the Hiigarans.
The Bentuse are strong but they have good reason to fear the Beast. The Beast is a fate worse than death for them and the Beast is really infectious. The Beast is a really good counter to the Bentuse.
@@gmradio2436The Beast is just if not more dangerous to normal people as well. I love how in the base game every ship's crew are military or people who understand the weight of the Homeworld mission, so they always stay calm and professional, but the Somtaaw range from excitable newbies to guys who can't really be bothered to pilots who sound like they're flying stoned
@GPU Gambon Considering that mining is already a rough profession imagine going from THAT to fighting an extremely aggressive and INTELLIGENT alien biotech plague.
@@aguyontheinternet9095 And they still WON. They didn't have a Messiah on their side, or some grand prophecy of how they'll slay the Beast, they pissed off the Bentusi trying to get their help, were scared shitless from the get go but they stuck to their guns, flinched but never fled and they defeated an ancient horror from hyperspace that made prior mentioned Bentusi want to abandon the galaxy in its entirety.
I think the stoned-sounding pilots are the ones piloting the Mimic suicide ships. If I understood correctly they are people that couldn't handle the loss of Kharak and the most of the Hiigaran people.
If you want some out of body experience, you should search the sentence "Kingdom Hearts 2 has screwed us again" the Somtaaw VA has done an ad for KH2. After all these hours fighting the terrors of space it's so jarring to hear him rant about KH.
I never got to play it before, but the CUT US LOOSE scene was so unnerving, like even the guy he's talking to doesn't know what's happening while someone is screaming, then the first thing he says is "You've got to save the rest of the ship. Jettison the lower decks!". Like damn, even the poor crew man doesn't have time to process what's happening but he knows they're dead and have to be cut off. Then you just watch it float away while everyone is screaming. Brilliant.
Eerie thing is that scream "Cut us loose" is not about science module. It is about him and his comrades, being jury-rigged with module's subsystems alive by Beast.
As a kid, I didn't know if I was playing a strategy game or a Horror game. That part was extremely unnerving. You hear all those blood curling screams and since you just see the ship floating away into the void, your imagination takes over.....

It's so sad that this the only game in the saga that didn't get an official remaster because of the missing source code, hopefully it will be remade one day, because it's definitely the best Homeworld game
Thanks for bringing those memories. To be honest, this game is the true definition of horror in RTS, and I was never able to find that level of terror in any other Real Time Strategy games.
I think imo, the main reason why it can be so scary without even showing on how the beast turn people into bio circuitry is the voice line. You can hear how people reacter when they turn and how it can easily turn ships into beast ships
one thing i love is the justification and lore building within the first cutscene. It perfectly sets up the world and why these ships, while they are are new and different, still feel like Hiigaran ships. This game was particularly good because it felt like a natural EXTENSION of the world and its events versus an experience that could have been much more disconnected. Barking Dog did such a fantastic job with this game and its a shame its been obscured by time. I'm thankful for the good folks over at GoG for resurrecting this masterpiece
The best kind of survival horror RTS made. A monster that simply adds all your work to its own if you are not careful and the horrors of screaming crewmembers are just so spine-chilling. Can one even imagine how horrible it is? Yeah if I was one of those people I would be hitting the self-destruct button quickly before the beast takes over.
i just hope HW3 takes a lesson of this here. Cataclysm beat Halo 2 back then, it would beat it as a remaster too. I just hope we still get a Sjet as Fleet Command again. Would be a waste of the Homeworld Trademark otherwise.
First HW had op salvage corvettes, HW2 required you to spend lots of time after winning map to rebuild fleet before proceeding which wasted huge amount of time. Cataclysm was basically improved HW 1 without time wasters of HW2.
have to agree there..and when you have a game where just improving the coding for its mechanics is all you need to do for remasters of it being paired with a excellent organic in world story....now thats something rare to see... like a once in a decade or century novel.
@@Rabestern I don't know I rarely had any trouble with fleet size in HW2... I DID have to scuttle ships and rebuild them to keep the credits down though as the stupid game made the new missions harder based off of your credits each mission (and HW1 remastered did the same thing to nerf the OP salvage corvettes. fleet size determined enemies at start of mission)
I come back every once in a while to experience this story. Hopefully, Homeworld 3 will continue the great tradition of great atmosphere comes first, there's nothing like it.
1:43:23 the shakyness in his voice so clearly communicates just how unnerved the guy is being so close to the biomechanical zombie ship and how much he wants to anywhere else the VA's are exceptional
I LOVE how the voice of the mining narration changes announcements from:- "We are the Kith Somataaw Mining Vessel KUUN-LAN" in the beginning to "We are the Kith Somataaw Warship KUUN-LAN" towards the end!!
It adds so much more depth but also sets the stage for how things are in the universe from the first game. The voices in HW1 were very militaristic; there was emotion but always very controlled and understated. Now, since we're essentially playing civilian miners, the designers went to great lengths to get that point across. It's seen a lot in the captain, who was expertly voiced with a ton of emotion in every line. Such a good game made with love and care that is rarely seen today.
@@TheSteakStyles Even though cataclysm was a very different tone and perspective than the original game, it does it so well that it is incredible in its own right. Still holds up today.

Just came across this theory by a commentor in another, summary style video about Cataclysm. Whichever of yall thought this up first, by God that is the best and oddly most poetic theory for this sequel following the strategy it did so well. So whether or not the OG creators even thought this through, Bravo.
Best scene: the Bentusi getting smack talked by the captain. Epic. Second favorite: when the engineers are talking about how the best operates, you can head the fear in their voice.
When that kushan carrier came back, the CAAL-SHTO, to help with the fleet during the shock cannon savage, I knew instantly that something was wrong. A few next words just confirm that it turn beast. The beast is scary!
it was kinda obvious. the CAAL-SHTO voice was as if it was forced out from the captain under heavy toxication of sorts or something, so yeah... kinda obvious. When warned that the raiders were approaching them, then the voice just turned more dark and beastly so. Beast CAAL-SHTO confirmed at that point. Really some awesome acting there.
This was the best HW game. While it doesn't have the epic journey of the original, it built upon the world nicely and had a great narrative. The more modern Homeworld games just feel so far removed and disconnected from it's origins story wise. All they have is a strange fixation on the S'jet lineage when there are so many more stories and perspectives that could have been told.
That's just what happens when art becomes a franchise. From the perspective of a marketing executive, franchises have immediately-recognizable elements that must be frontloaded and represented (Star Wars has Storm Troopers, Darth Vader lookalikes and Star Destroyers, Fallout has the Brotherhood of Steel, Deathclaws and Super Mutants, etc.), otherwise it might not have the brand recognition.
Epic work. One thing was missing. If you wait long enough and take out the last desperation assault by the beast in the final mission before destroying the nagarok ship the beast makes one last attempt to bribe the Samtaw promising to return lost ones and even making the Samtaw gods among higara
Damn, maaan, i replayed Cataclysm right half a year ago. One of the best strategy games along with the all Homeworld series. Also a very legendary stuff was made in our Russian version - the Fleet Command voice actor was chosen the one who was a voice of Optimus Prime in Russian version of the movies. So sad he died of a desease a year ago... So... Thanks to Barking Dog, thanks to this video's author, and R.I.P. Andrew Yaroslavtsev, the most legendary voice among Russian sound actors.
Didn’t they say it contacted the beast during a hyperspace jump; I think it corrupts much like the void can corrupt ships during jumps in war hammer 40K. The beast lives in there. The void.

The fact this game is just 2 hours and 20 minutes of shear story, not to mention the gameplay is insane. The amount of work that went into this old game is what made Homeworld great.
36:29 - The barely contained terror in the voice of the engineer is top notch. Terror and confusion since he is not a scientist. When he got to tech specs hes got more confident at least. 1:25:42 - Man, I forgot about Faal-Corum encounter and my honest hope that they will make it. The feel of sistership and friendly souls on board that just does not have our experience and knowing that Caal-Chto was subverted somehow just added to the dread and hope. Loosing Caal-Chto was unfortunate, but they still were not that friendly to us. My heart would've sunk if I was Faal-Corum infected. I LOVE the voice acting in this game. All of it. In the first homeworld and in the second VO is professional even when things are dire - gives you a correct impression that they were chosen among the best and the most stress resistant people they had at the time. But here people are not fighters at all, they are not military - they are civilian miners, with some tech to fend off some small pirate incursions to have mining operation continue according to needed quotas.
The Kuun-lan was such a badass ship despite being a mining vessel. She and her crew defied the odds and stopped a galactic threat. It sucks that cataclysm isn’t canon to the storyline. I would have loved to see mention of Kiith-somtaaw and the Kuun-lan in home world 2.
i really love how the beast them self even acknowledge the somtaaw as an worthy opponent for a sentient cancer even they learn to know that somtaaw is not just your typical mining clan.

Homeworld was amazing, and Cataclysm just simply blew my mind. There was something.. satisfying in getting that huge siege cannon and turn the mothership from a mining vessel into a badass warship. The premise, storyline, voice acting - well everything in this game is just so perfect.
The first time i played the game, i didnt really noticed it, i did felt it when after the first mission they thanked everyone but the Somtaaw and a little bit with the destroyer, needless to say at the last mission, i completely felt it when they went from "This is the mining vessel" to "this is the warship", man was i pumped for it
The feeling of playing it for the first time at age of 14yrs old is really great.. RTS games backthen are ahead of it's time even new gamea nowadays can't match it.
homeworld 1 (not the remake) played and looked better than almost any rts for its scale. this game is basically an A teir space opera with better writin than almost any other RTS . they litterally dont make them like they used to
The remaster has some issues involving Formations, Salvage Corvette limitations, a bunch of gameplay bugs, and even some details ranging from ship sizes and colors and what might be some noticeable differences with the voice acting. Sure, a lot of them are rectified by the likes of the Players Patch, but...
I remember playing this game for the first time, Not knowing what I was in for, I did not see trailers or any kind of promotion for this game, all I knew was that it was a sequel to Homeworld. After the mission of the first infection, I had nightmares, I did not play the game for weeks, Continued to get nightmares... Then I decided to toughen up and continue... Then that mission with refugees that were being infected and turned into infection missiles... Yikes! Had to stop again... Nightmares continue... I eventually finished the game, but after that, never played the game again... But to this day, this game will forever be burned into my memory and perhaps even my soul...
Im still amazed how versitile a damn mining vessel in this era of Hiigara is, shit’s bigger than a carrier, builds its own fleet and can repel most fighter/corvette assaults on it’s own. I found it funny we got pushed around to do things we were not meant to be doing but somehow still got through.
Iirc the lore is that the Somtaaw made it into a very versatile ship since that's pretty much what they were good at; the other one is the Faal-Corum, its older sibling. Since the Somtaaw weren't originally a fighting caste, it only makes sense it's just a huge mining vessel. What tipped it tho (imo) is the fact that the crew of the Kuun-lan was quick on their feet and able to adapt, while also being lucky. They were able to flee from worse fights that would've taken them down ( like the one with the Clee-San at the start ) They were able to pick fights and learn more about their enemy while other fleets (presumably) just got devoured, and they were eventually able to pick up that ancient cannon while also getting access the Bentusi schematics for the souped up Acolyte. It feels convenient and silly at times, but never really contrived ( apart from maybe how dumb it can sometimes feel having thousands of resources banked up while having no SU to spare.
@@rintv3675 The manual also explained that Somtaaw had to basically gamble their future on this, needing to beg and negotiate just to get 45 days of work on the original mothership. Since they'd likely never get another chance, they built the original Faal Corum and then expanded on that with the Kuun Lan, focusing on making it versatile, adaptable and modular so they'd never need to use the mothership again.
@@Maznator There's the possibility such a ship self-destructs instead. Pressing a button to blow oneself up is difficult, but a lot easier when everything around is quickly getting covered by flesh and teeth.
I think the choice of the Somtaaw Kiith-sa might have been a blessing in disguise. If the module had been handed over to a fully geared and armed Nabaal strike group, the catastrophy would hav been.... cataclysmic!
I have so many happy memories of the HW series, but especially of HW:C. It's one of those special instances where the whole thing is perfect in all aspects of creation. You could appreciate the horror of The Beast from all angles, especially the fears of the Bantusii
From having no respect from the other Kiith to having Gearbox tell all the ex-Relic folk at BBI to include Beastslayer and Sommtaw livery in Homeworld 3, canonizing the events of Cata/Emergence
I wish we got to see the the Kuun-Lan during the first mission of HW2. Passing by on it's way to a nearby base and docking there. Would have just been nice to see that nod to this game.
Thanks for the upload! Cataclysm (or Emergence thanks to Acti-Blizz) is probably my favorite entry of all Homeworld entries, I will probably keep repeating this vid every so often just to have the soundscape. Kiith Somtaaw's story from being mundane religous miners turning into an full-fledged warrior Kiith is just so absolutely heartwarming, thanks to the horrors they fought in Cataclysm. In my mind this is canon, it's just censored to hell just like how the Coalition on Kharak found that Taiidan carrier (you'd think during the mothership launch everyone was briefed on the Taiidan). If we see Somtaaw again in HW3 I just hope everything in Cataclysm is confirmed canon. They do not need to bring back the beast but at least bring back these tired miners, finally getting the recognition they deserved ❤
In Homeworld Mobile they have Somtaaw as one of the factions in the game, yeah, they're the most popular Kiith so there's a possibility to add them in as well
I appreciate the amount of work this must've been. Every so often I feel like playing the homeworld games again for the story, but RTS games in general can feel like work. Thanks for making this, I enjoyed watching
i like this game because it feels natural after the original homeworld. small stories that feature the different clans and viewpoints after the big story had been told. would have wanted a few more before homeworld 2 had come out but game development was different back then.
Love how GamerPete grew along the campaign as well. He/She's by no means a seasoned player with this game, yet bit by bit, our gamer adapted and overcame it all, just like the Somtaaw people
I like to think that, after the politics had been settled and the Kiith Elders taken their new position, that the Kuun Lan and her weary crew returned to the simple life of mining.
Im pretty sure that they just took like a week or two off to rest after going to hell, adapting to its unforgiving environment and getting back armed to the teeth and fucking overloading the siege cannon to kill this beast bastard But i dont think they will go mining again, cause their mining ship is now considered a warship that can make a fleet out of solid rock, hopes and rage. Basically, now they are in charge of contaminating any biomachinery hazard or work as professional mercenaries across the universe
I love these because of the subtle voice acting perfect example if you listen to the captain was talking about the Beast you can actually hear his voice crack in some places like he's trying to compose himself he's either trying not to be sick or is trying not to cry I would say try not to cry because as a captain and what I've learned from the more most of those people were either part of this family or they've been working together for many years
It's been 20 years since I played this or saw the cutscenes, and they are as good as I remembered, which is rare for old games. They made an excellent decision to eschew expensive prerendered cutscenes that wouldn't have aged well, and rather use basic artistic sketches and narration and the game engine for cutscenes, focusing more on excellent sound work, writing, and voice acting, because those have aged like fine wine. I only wish they hadn't reused that betusi "we will not be bound!" death scream, as it's so well delivered that it burns into your brain, and you can't really use something like that multiple times or it just feels wrong. Other than that, it's all perfection.
At 13:25 you see the escape pod from the Nostromo, the ship from the original Alien movie from 1979. It was in that pod Ripley escaped and later crashed on the prison world in Aliens. @Upcycle Shoes screw the macross cannon, those starter guns it had? anything that was over the ship would get anihilated in rather a fast time for a "mining vessel"; one gun at the front, two on the back rear part of the engine, anything in the right angle getting hammered by those 3 guns would die, i always delayed upgrading to energy canons on the kuun lan for that matter
@@ES21007 sheer volume of firing, the ammount and speed at which htey shot was just staggering, while sure the energy canons did more damage per shot and even had tracking, the endless sea of mass driver shooting from those 3 turrets could quickly destroy most fighters and corvettes, and anything heavier than those would only live for a bit longer, at least when compared with the energy canons that i eventually just got a bit dissappointed, but were still required for the bigger ships
This game came way before Dead Space and it defined organic horror in space. Also, that music piece 2:09 onward can also be heard in at least some parts in the Dead Space 3. Also 1:53:35 in that line you can literally hear the horrified breath sound of the Bentusi. Voice acting for this role did a fantasic job in this game.
The color scheme of your fleet is great, I thought they were the default colors lol😂. Looking at another video on the homeworld series, the guy painted his ship red, compared to the blue with yellow lining, your is much better. 😊
You probably know this but if you hold left ALT and left click a ship, your camera will automatically snap and lock onto that ship with your view. Also there is a pretty dope cutscenes if you stick around after picking up the research vessel. Also you can go into game settings to change the sensor system overlay back to the original Homeworld 1 style if wanted.
@@nuruddinshah684 The giant cannon is not proximity or impact based, but is timed to explode exactly at the point you chose in the sensors tab. @@AVerySexuallyDeviantOrange For the second example, you could at least move your capital ships away from the Bentusi Exchanges and just let the Kuun-Lan duke it out against them alone until its hull reaches critical levels.
I loved the multi-player matches back in the day. Lobbies used to be full of clans like X, Demon and I think there was also a Chicken clan. You used to be able to cheese with the mothership itself and somehow flip it to certain angles so more cannons would hit the opposing mothership. Also seige cannon rushes. Ramming frigates were a unique concept. Wall/Sphere formation spam. Mass multi beam frigates. Missle acolyte micro.
@@NobleKorhedron
About the only thing I can think of is that Wall spreads out the damage. Pretty bad for capital ships where Fighters and Corvettes have to focus on weakspots, but against enemy fighters who have so little health that's not as much of a problem.

Beast Slayers!!
The black and white models they use for their story telling are so impactful. The part where the Bentusi are entombed within their ships was terrifying
The Bentusi are Unbound. They find liberation in that process. They find your Human experience terrifying, ironically. Bound and limited.
As such, their ships were meant to be assembled from larger, more easily manufactured chunks (hence being able to build Support & Utility Modules to flesh out their capabilities)
The lower decks were one such chunk, so I'm sure they were able to just cut the ties that initially bound the two halves together.
In a small way, adapting to those initial limitations may have saved the galaxy.
There's also the Somtaaw Council greedily keeping the module's existence and contents a secret from the other kiith.
@@michaelandreipalon359 It's kinda sad, considering the Kith Somtaav were "rewarded", so there's a belief that these Kith Councilors were never punished for their transgression, but actually promoted to leading
While i do understand their reasoning - the entire point is that it's POSSIBLE to study the beast under safe circumstances, and the Imperialist Taiidan proved it in their secret laboratory. This could probably been averted if they've given the module to someone more competent.
Alas, and again i state - the fate of the councilors uknown, assuming that they just "pushed the accident under the rug" like most politicians and claimed responsibility for destroying it.
It's strange how a strategy space game can create a scarier atmosphere than Dead Space.
damn right bro
WE....

I think that anyone who should take task to remake need to do immense work with lots of mechanics from scratch. Week ago I played HW:C and I was overwhelmed how much changes were done in one year after HW1 premiere. From fleet management, linking vessels (acolytes to ACV), modular structure of mothership to sentinel's shielding wothout mention about graphics enchancements.
For the clearance. I played Cataclysm hmmm bout 2 times more than HW1. Maybe the darkness that fullfils the game, feel of anger, vengeance.
I love how in the base game every ship's crew are military or people who understand the weight of the Homeworld mission, so they always stay calm and professional, but the Somtaaw range from excitable newbies to guys who can't really be bothered to pilots who sound like they're flying stoned
Also some of them panicking when facing a nameless horror from Hyperspace
@GPU Gambon Considering that mining is already a rough profession imagine going from THAT to fighting an extremely aggressive and INTELLIGENT alien biotech plague.
@@aguyontheinternet9095
And they still WON.
One of the things I loved from this game and sadden when I played the remasters.
I think the stoned-sounding pilots are the ones piloting the Mimic suicide ships. If I understood correctly they are people that couldn't handle the loss of Kharak and the most of the Hiigaran people.

Jettison the lower decks!". Like damn, even the poor crew man doesn't have time to process what's happening but he knows they're dead and have to be cut off. Eerie thing is that scream "Cut us loose" is not about science module. It is about him and his comrades, being jury-rigged with module's subsystems alive by Beast.

It's so sad that this the only game in the saga that didn't get an official remaster because of the missing source code, hopefully it will be remade one day, because it's definitely the best Homeworld game
The voice actors really give these otherwise blocky and static ships more character than most video games and a lot of tv and movies.
One of the reasons BSG is soooooo good.
I consider it the Thing is space.
one thing i love is the justification and lore building within the first cutscene.
The old distortion of sound from the early methods of audio compression used brings back nostalgia for me like a smell from mom's kitchen.
This was the best homeworld. The others were great, but the story, the factions, and the voice acting in this game are on another level.
easily. This was probably the only game that got me fearing the enemy. I hated that damn infected research module chasing me across space.
i just hope HW3 takes a lesson of this here.
1:43:23 the shakyness in his voice so clearly communicates just how unnerved the guy is being so close to the biomechanical zombie ship and how much he wants to anywhere else
the VA's are exceptional
I LOVE how the voice of the mining narration changes announcements from:-
"We are the Kith Somataaw Mining Vessel KUUN-LAN" in the beginning to
"We are the Kith Somataaw Warship KUUN-LAN" towards the end!!
The voice actors did a really good job in this, and narrative-wise I think this might be a little better than the original (as much as I love it)
It adds so much more depth but also sets the stage for how things are in the universe from the first game.

Give me more of Captain Chad Som-taaw.

The fact this game is just 2 hours and 20 minutes of shear story, not to mention the gameplay is insane. The amount of work that went into this old game is what made Homeworld great.

'This is Captain Hugh Mann of the Caaaaaaaal-ShhhhhhhTo'
Still remember when I first heard that line.
FFFFFFFFFF............
1:53:15 easily my favorite exchange out of the 3 homeworld games.
I remember playing this game for the first time,
Not knowing what I was in for,
I did not see trailers or any kind of promotion for this game, all I knew was that it was a sequel to Homeworld.
After the mission of the first infection, I had nightmares,
I did not play the game for weeks,
Continued to get nightmares...
This is more true home world than hw3
Im still amazed how versitile a damn mining vessel in this era of Hiigara is, shit’s bigger than a carrier, builds its own fleet and can repel most fighter/corvette assaults on it’s own. I found it funny we got pushed around to do things we were not meant to be doing but somehow still got through.
Bigger ship, bigger haul

The manual also explained that Somtaaw had to basically gamble their future on this, needing to beg and negotiate just to get 45 days of work on the original mothership. Since they'd likely never get another chance, they built the original Faal Corum and then expanded on that with the Kuun Lan, focusing on making it versatile, adaptable and modular so they'd never need to use the mothership again.
imagine if the Beast was found by a ship that couldn't eject its individual modules
@@Maznator There's the possibility such a ship self-destructs instead. Pressing a button to blow oneself up is difficult, but a lot easier when everything around is quickly getting covered by flesh and teeth.
I used to love this game just for the music. When I got older, I appreciated the story as less and less stories are this impactful.
So the miners have become warrior's, I love that line
I think the choice of the Somtaaw Kiith-sa might have been a blessing in disguise. If the module had been handed over to a fully geared and armed Nabaal strike group, the catastrophy would hav been.... cataclysmic!
Those ships also aren't modular, so everyone on board who'd have an idea of wtf was going on would be dead.
I have so many happy memories of the HW series, but especially of HW:C. It's one of those special instances where the whole thing is perfect in all aspects of creation. You could appreciate the horror of The Beast from all angles, especially the fears of the Bantusii
Came back to this after playing the horrible HW3 campaign, god this one is far far far superior to the junk that Blackbird made.
This is one of the coolest and unique stories of all time in my opinion. It is inspiring
I wasn't going to watch the entirety of 2:20 hours of Cataclysm playthrough, but I just did. And I'm glad I did!
In Homeworld Mobile they have Somtaaw as one of the factions in the game, yeah, they're the most popular Kiith so there's a possibility to add them in as well
@@silent0089 My current phone can't play Homeworld Mobile, but from what you are saying... These news puts a smile on my face!
It's a good thing it's *officially* canon now
I appreciate the amount of work this must've been. Every so often I feel like playing the homeworld games again for the story, but RTS games in general can feel like work. Thanks for making this, I enjoyed watching
When hm3 comes out im going to replay them all back to back.
Tempted to contact a charity and stream the whole thing.
@@31337ification do it
I will never not see Workers as bumper cars.
i like this game because it feels natural after the original homeworld. small stories that feature the different clans and viewpoints after the big story had been told. would have wanted a few more before homeworld 2 had come out but game development was different back then.
This game aces in storytelling compared to HW3....which is abysmal.
thats like comparing the lord of the rings to a poorly 12 yr old watt pad fan fic
The most important thing I learned about the story was...
*The command ship is under attack*
i wish this was remastered like collection of HW 1 and 2 :(
13:37 - its the escape pod from the Nostromo, nice little nod there!
I hope every single member of that ship got a comfortable pension for the rest of their lives for the sacrifices they made. Good god they deserve it
Im pretty sure that they just took like a week or two off to rest after going to hell, adapting to its unforgiving environment and getting back armed to the teeth and fucking overloading the siege cannon to kill this beast bastard
But i dont think they will go mining again, cause their mining ship is now considered a warship that can make a fleet out of solid rock, hopes and rage. Basically, now they are in charge of contaminating any biomachinery hazard or work as professional mercenaries across the universe
The very first horror RTS.
indeed
I still have the original game box in my shelf. It's unopened. I bought it and downloaded a pirated copy just so I could have the box in the shelf. I guess it's worth some money now but I won't sell it. :P
To this day, the Kuun-lan is one of my favourite four starships of all time.
Wasnt initially a fan but it grew on me. I liked you could actually move it in missions unlike the mothership in HW1&2
@@maffyg107 you can sort of move the pride hiigara but its so slow youll better off use carriers
@@awlore
Why were the mass drivers better than the energy cannons?
I just watched the entire 2h20min video and I demand a remaster!
Anymore tips?
@@nuruddinshah684 The giant cannon is not proximity or impact based, but is timed to explode exactly at the point you chose in the sensors tab. Pretty useful if you can predict where a formation will be heading
The fight against the bentusi can be ended early by killing off one of your capital ships after they say a certain voice line, which can save the better part of your fleet
This ones obvious but the carrier escort mission ends with a capturable taidan capital ship, just rush workers to it and missile acvs to kill off the surrounded sphere formation
Agh, it's all hard to remember but I wish I had replays to see what it was all about. This game was amazing.
