    Everyone is here for the same reason. Nate's musicianship is absolutely unreal. There's chop worshippers out there. But, anyone that plays... understands the level of control, independence, discipline, and musical IQ (phrasing, dynamics AND feel) is masterclass across the board here. Pure class through and through.

      Right? His technique also helps to get that sound; Nate plays the best rimshots of pretty much any drummer I've ever heard. He doesn't slam the drum like a lot of other players do, but catches the rim just enough to make the drum "speak" a little louder.

    First time I watched this, I thought, "Impressive musicianship all around, no doubt, but I'm tired of all this odd-time stuff." Then I watched it again and thought, "That's pretty cool. It actually does groove." Then again, listening even more carefully-and I'm blown away. This is pure mastery.

    • @ericfricke4512
      @ericfricke4512 2 роки тому +4

      It bugs me when people whine about writing in odd times because for guys like Nate Smith and Makaya McCraven, it's essential and foundational to their voices as composers, not some cheap trick or lame attempt to show off.

      @@patrickstoddard6232Watch me. Lol.
      Nate Smith is a from GAWD, I'm not getting it twisted. But those odd times or compound times or whatever they are.......they give me so much anxiety! 🤣
      Sorry to complain, but it's like Nate is playing basketball with me and crossing me up every time I catch his rhythm! 🤣🤣🤣

    • @Six3rdy
      @Six3rdy 6 місяців тому

      @@ericfricke4512How would they typically whine about it? Because (I'mma snitch on myself here) I'd whine about it, not even gonna lie to you. But the fact that he's able to do this consistently AND effectively (in other words, groovy) ADDS to him as opposed to takes away from him. Even I don't think it's fair to call him a showoff. I see too many subtleties in his playing that tells me the pocket is his first priority.
      But I would complain because it's anxiety inducing. Not his fault, of course. But it's like I'm vibing with what he's laying down, and when he does that odd stutter step or what not, I have to recalibrate, and re-vibe. And rinse and repeat.

    So I was drumming in my church for the past few years without motivation. I was just filling the spot until the "real drummer" came. But then I thought to myself why not actually try to learn the drums and develop into a better musician. Saying this to say that I don't know why I watched this. Nate Smith you have helped me realize I better get way more serious and put in some real practice or else I should stick to playing pots and pans. Wow this was simply amazing. Pocket is deep and feel, dynamics and overall musicality are off the charts. Nate Smith you are a musical genius.

    This is legit the best version of Nate and Kinfolk out there.
    Such a shame Randy Runyon - Guitar and Takeshi Ohbayashi - Keys aren't in the band anymore.
    They really added an incredible blend of funk, blues, jazz & fusion to the group.

    Holy S***, Nate has the best control over his "Parking Spot" of probably any drummer whose lived. He's as on point with timing as a computer to the human ear with out sounding bland to the human ear in the way only a computer can.
