I just saw Nate + Kinfolk this past Sunday night at Monterey Jazz....wow! Guy and his band blew me away! Got to chat afterwards with him back stage. Just a super nice guy...and a killer player!!!!
You must have heard this a million times before but the way you handle those 22” and stop them. That’s just amazing. Leave phrasing for the of the band. I’m gonna practice this stuff until I make it to something that sounds like me, but with your context in mind. Thank you for your inspiration. Greetz from the Netherlands.
Bravo !
Am I the only one who's had the thought that a collab between Nate Smith and Jacob Collier would be off the charts?! Nate has incredible creativity in his playing that I think would be a perfect match to Jacob's off-the-wall ideas!
sarbuk interesting take. I would like to see the two together as well now that you mention it. I should say I’m not too picky when it comes to these top artists however. All masters in one way or another
Holy heck this is next level unreal! Love ALL of these musicians. I'm probably a little out of the loop, but I'm especially glad these videos have led me to the magic that is Takeshi Ohbayashi! I'm positively blown away. Thanks Nate and the band, and thanks to everyone at Berklee! Keep 'em coming
Obviously the entire band is phenomenol and the engineering is killer but can we talk about that guitar solo and tones for a moment starting at 16:13?!
This is what it sounds like when the Pocket is kept and everything gels together. No one is over playing anybody. That helps to create a groove you cant help but do the studio neck bounce to!
Looking at the extent of the over hammering, I would guess that it is either a prototype Thin Overhammered, or the Bounce/Thin Overhammered prototype that Zildjian was rolling out around that time. It’s hard to tell considering the main difference between the two is the cluster hammering and bell shape.
🎶Morning and Allison🎶 🤭❤️ my God! The guitarist got some and dat was damn good. After the beauty of the whole show and end on this tune? Just awesome! Nate is off the charts talented #damnthatsnare
I wish I had even halfd the connectin to my instrument that Nate has... not sure I'd want to spend the time he clearly has on it either, so good luck to him. What an artist!
@@m.dave2141 If i'm not too late, here you go : he divides the beat in 5 (quintuplets) instead of the usual 3 (triplets) or 4 (16th notes) and accentuates the first and fourth quintuplets. ONE (two three) FOUR (five) ONE (two three) FOUR (five)... and so on. Good practice !
At the beginning of the video, i noticed the pianist couldn’t catch up with the tempo so nate helped him to get the right tempo. That explains why the pianist was watching nate the whole time. Nothing sounded weird and it was fuckin beautiful.
Nate's musicianship is as inexplicable as the reason why he won't take his jacket off even when sweating like hell.
He is not sweating, that's why
@@tbaernthaler 11:02 yes, he is
He's just warming up.
As a cool cat he doesn't sweat😁
Inscrutable Blackness. I used to study capoeira with a brother who trained every day in a shearling jacket. Capoeira! It's that Black imperative. ✊🏾

I give the mixing a 155/100 ;)

I just realized something. I've apparently lost all ability to count. Damn you, Nate Smith!
whew, I honestly started getting a bit paranoid on myself, thought I was going crazy hahahah
Square Wheel, as far as I can tell, is based around a bar of 4/4, and a bar of 7/8. Oh, and ri-di-cu-lous syncopation. Dude's just outrageous.
@@InsaneDrumer18 I can't even feel my leg smh
@@motophiliac thank you 💜
I am very grateful to have these videos, but it would have been Heaven to be there for the experience. This is art. This is culture.
Grip Technique Level = Expert. Just watching Nate's hands around the 2:08 mark and again around 4:10 is a masterclass on grip...

It gave the bass groove an entirely new meaning when Nate came in at 7:45. A true master.
Hell yeah!
every detail of this is so sublime that it brings a tear to my eye
The talent the recording the mixing. Everything off the charts. And Nates drum set is the best I have ever heard.
I literally have never cried from listening to music being just so good. 😭😭😭😢😢❤️❤️❤️
Can we just take a moment to gush over the green finish on the drum shells?
🎶This entire band is dynamite!! 🎶
My favorite sparkle finish from Ludwig.
Green sparkle..
Nate is amazing..a Superhuman ..but huge applause to that beast of a bassist who can play like a rock and provide such a strong foundation for Nate.
That first song I put it on a loop I can listen to it for hours I love it
YEP! "Retold" is a masterpiece!
Okay this whole group of instrumentalists is excellent!! And Nate's Timing, my goodness!!! Those "cadence" switches were flawless!!!
This mix is so alive, I commented on part 1 but it’s just so incredible - the playing and the mix are just top notch
I have watched so many live performances before, especially drums, but this series is the first that really blew my mind and challenged me.

Backbeat is so lazy and is most therapeutic. Kinfolk are hired as my new mental health care providers. God, I love this from the bottom of my heart.

Now that you've mentioned it,I think that's a great idea!
I'm all out fun and tears whole throughout this performance.
I'm at awe :D
The groove on that third tune is on another level.
WONDERFUL, GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!! Stand up for this Great Leader and Great Team

There is so much feel, and emotion in this set!!!

I’ve never received more satisfaction from a youtube video ever haha
11:02 that was some unreal sweat, it was straight out of a music video the way it sprayed away from the drums haha
Came here because I always see short videos of Nate just soloing.
I wanted to see him playing with a band and wasn't disappointed
really incredible mixing.
Nate Smith is the Ace of Aces!!!

Damn. This is the clearest definition of the term: Groove. Cheers From México City Maestr@s!
Nate’s grooves are always so on point..

The non-verbal communication in this mfk is sensational.
Props to the engineers sounds great
what time are you playing?
Jimmy Gómez Guitar. Not sure which one is correct it is either 9/4 or a bar of 1/4 followed by a bar of 1/5 most likely the latter
I’m not in the band though only in my dreams
I play piano, drums, and bass
@James Camil... I'm not sure, but for me seams 1 bar of 4/4 and 1 bar of 7/8. What do you think about this?
Man, that piano. Excellent work.
深深着迷!!太好听了
This is pure fire!
Nice harmonic/textural/timbral subtleties in that first track.
Those cymbals sound so perfect I suppose they're not real
Its all triggers!! Everything is triggers! /s
...first you must realize that there is no cymbal.
Love and admiration! Bravo!
Nate Smith es un músico al servicio de la música.
Una reliquia viviente.
My word, peaceful spirt there. Outrageous.
I must have that ride cymbal
Nate Smith: No. This is *my* cymbal. There are many cymbals like it. But this one is mine.
Agreed. It might be the perfect sound. Especially the crash... shame it's a prototype according to the captions above. :(
@@dave_sanderson it's a 22" constantinople ride from what I've gathered- closest relative to it would be a renaissance maybe?
