Hello Everyone! I have started a second channel called "Roar!" where I take on challenges and push myself out of my comfort zone. You can check it out here: ua-cam.com/users/roarrawr
Beth Roars since you are talking about Black Sabbath, then perhaps you will have something to say about the duet of Gilan and Dio who sang in this group ua-cam.com/video/AT7XcYxco4M/v-deo.html
And while his voice did change as he aged, it never really degraded (the way Rob Halford's or Geoff Tate's did, for example). Whatever Ronnie was doing, it worked for him, and it didn't damage his voice.
I saw Rob Halford with Judas Priest in 2015 and he hit all the notes but I see Geoff Tate's voice changed. Rob Halford being in his 60s, it's insane he hits those notes even on Painkiller.
Idiot. A "vocal coach", or any kind of professional interpreter, of course wouldn't just apply "techniques" they just invented for themselves but describe anything they notice in how it works (the goal of any science or field). You are not just joking but a genuine anti-intellectual idiot. That also defines your relative popularity on the internet or at least now...
"Like telling a group of children a story" is the best description of Dio that I've ever heard. Perfectly sums up his essence, that sense of magic and wonder.
It cracks me up to hear someone questioning how healthy Dio's technique was. The man's singing career lasted over 50 years (1957-2008) and he was as powerful near his death as the many times I saw him live in his last 20 years. He commanded and technique obeyed.
I don’t find it at all out of line to ask that question. Ronnie Dio left the dulcetonic bodies of many imitators along the musical highway, as they too, assumed they could do what he did. I know people who will never sing again because they thought they understood his voice. I appreciate Beth’s thinking.
@Los Fromla I've said it many times, Ronnie James Dio = THE GREATEST ROCK / METAL VOCALIST EVER . PERIOD !!! God how we miss you. . R.I.P RONNIE. .♡☆♤☆♧☆◇☆.
I saw Ronnie with Vivian in 1984 in Honolulu when I was stationed there in the Army. Dokken were the opening act. Awesome show. The last time was the Heaven and Hell show in Grand Prairie Texas. Machine Head and Megadeth were also on the bill. Rex Brown from Pantera, Dime's girl Rita Haney, and Vinnie Paul's drum tech Kat were in the lobby . Epic Metal night for me. Hard Rock and Metal rule.
Regarding that distortion you mentioned, he kept going for a 25 more years after that clip was recorded and was one of the few rock singers that still had a voice that could deliver those songs up 'til the very end (he died in 2010). The greatest hard rock singer of all time! 🤘😎🤘

This is one of those where having someone who knows what she is talking about be so impressed with one of my heroes, who I have always thought was great, is so very satisfying :). Oh and your points about expressing emotion through the music are so very on point about what Rock is all about.
I love Ronnie James Dio. One of the best metal vocalists of all times. I've pickup up my first DIO album in the middle of the 90s without knowing him or his band. I know, as a Sabbath fan, shame on me. I've put it on and I was blown away. I've listened to nothing else for the next few weeks and little else for the next few months. I literally took this CD with me to show it to my friends and have them play it for me while I was there. RJD was a complete master. Damn great range, complete control, he sang everything with his whole being. And his theatrics - so fun to watch him. If you like rock you can't dislike Dio, it's just not possible. He was tiny but one of the greatest.
I always describe Dio as very lion-like, vocally. Roaring. No small amount of majesty. A fantastic storyteller, and I don’t think I’ve seen anyone throw quite so much force and expression into performance in rock/metal before or since. Bruce Dickinson is close by, however.
band77one he’s brilliant, I agree, but overlooked and I don’t think really classed with mighty names like Dio, Halford, or Dickinson. Really, and that’s only because Manowar haven’t really let him shine as much. Very samey (music) and for whatever reason have been very quiet through the years, and it’s a shame because he might’ve gotten more attention that he deserves elsewhere (not knocking Manowar, but they haven’t really been giving him really enough chance to show off) I think a side project or a solo band might’ve made him stand out a bit more.
@@werewolftoby As a huge Manowar fan I´m bias, but I´m not saying you are wrong about that. Music wise though, I rank Eric higher than both Rob (who I am a big fan of) and Bruce. I know Bruce is more known to the public, which make sense when Maiden is a much bigger band than Manowaar. But not only is it a question of taste ( I prefer Erics tone, technique etc), but I also think he is a better vocalist overall than Bruce. And Bruce is a very very good vocalist. Just my two cents, to whoever it may concern.
I’m glad you enjoyed this, Ronnie James Dio was one of the greatest singers to ever live. He was so expressive and incredible, also was an incredible person did so much for charity. Particularly for children.
He is nearly 60+ years old here when you reviewed him. He was well into this 70's and still going when he dies. He never, ever hurt or degraded his voice. He is the ultimate example of how to sing without hurting yourself and crapping out at 40 years old.
Do yourself and all of us a favour and react to Falling Off The Edge Of The World live at Radio City Music Hall, 2007. He was 64 at the time and the performance was just amazing.
Love this video. Dio... I loved how he put everything out there on the stage. No matter hwo many shows he did he would give everyone 115% and sing with such passion and emotion. Dickinson, Dio and Halford are the trinity of vocalists, I feel, Dio is the best of them all. Live Evil is a double live album from Black Sabbath... 1982 I believe, and it is just a clinic all the way through
Completely agree with you on the trinity. I would add Tim "Ripper" Owens as a runner-up tho. He filled in for Rob Halford for Judas Priest for 2 albums, covered King Diamond nearly flawlessly, and is sometimes the singer for "Dio Disciples" (A tribute band consisting of former Dio band members and various vocalists.) Peace
Cool... I saw them at the old Coliseum in Houston, TX. Believe it or not, the Outlaws opened up for them. Weirdest bill I've ever seen: heavy metal and Southern rock.
I am so happy, that i was allowed to see the "Heaven & Hell" - gig in Wacken with him in 2009. The first and very last time to hear him singing live. It was awesome. And i am a lucky man. R.I.P RJD
Wow, your reaction at 2:07 gave me such joy I legit got emotional. I've loved RJD since about '77 or so when my teenaged uncle played me a 45 of Man on the Silver Mountain. Your raw amazement is infectious, and gave me a bit of that 7yr old's me's memories of falling in love with metal vocalists like Bruce Dickinson and Ronnie James Dio. Thanks for that.
Love me some Dio, absolutely fantastic singer. Probably my favorite male metal singer ever. As for suggestion, how about the crowd singing along to the Bard's Song (In the forest) by Blind Guardian :)
Dio was an amazing singer... and having a very clear diction. When Dio sings you can hear every single word. That also tells a lot of about vocal tehcnique and how well developed the overtones are.
One of the best, if not the best vocalists of all time. Other great performances of him: Rainbow - Stargazer DIO - Holy Diver DIO - Strange Highways Black Sabbath - The Sign of The Southern Cross Heaven and Hell - Bible Black Just a few, because, there are too many.
Ronnie was and is the heart of Metal. Huge voice topped only by a massively kind heart. Missed and loved by so many. Thank you for your reaction. He's very special to so many!
Look, Maiden is my favorite band but Dio was nothing short of amazing. I'm not doing the who's better thing, just know that we can love other singers without arguing.
@@chefmastershake you named my top three. Someone once said to me " they all have the epic operatic style which is prob why if you like one of those you love them all " i guess that may be true. Three of the best and each their own style parly butvat the same time top tier
As a huge Ronnie James Dio fan, I enjoyed this live performance, but Beth's breakdown of RJD's style is spot-on. Great fun watching you become a fan of one of the best that metal ever had.
Awesome reaction! Miss him so much :( I'm joining the requests for Symphony X and Blind Guardian. Also asking for Avantasia (The Scarecrow) and Ayreon (The Day that the World Breaks Down), both projects with many great singers, it'd be fun for you and we'd enjoy it a lot!
For such a tiny little dude, Dio had some huge pipes. Most powerful projection in rock and roll. This was about halfway into his career and near his height.
It's a little known fact Dio's diaphragm and lungs actually were enlarged and kept going down the length of his torso right down until his massive titanium cojones. Some people claim his diaphragm occupied a plane of its own.
@@MrDeengels Halford and Dio really cover the two poles of metal singing about as perfectly as possible. Halford with the screams, Dio with the growls. And it helps that they both can write incredibly well.
Had to watch this again a year since my last. Amazing singer and amazing review. Nearly every Ronnie James Dio song brings a tear to my eye. I miss the little dude.
I love his performances during the rainbow era, specially the live in Munich 1977 concert. Before he gained world wide recognition from Black sabbath or DIO. He was a complete singer and could pull off everything.
I’m admitting up front that what I’m about to say will sound dumb. I get it. At the same time, Im at the point in my life that I don’t care. That being said...I really enjoy your reactions as well as how you dissect what’s going on vocally and explain the how’s, why’s and where for’s etc. BUT...by far my favorite part of the entire experience has got to be that adorable little roar! Love it!
RJD pulled me into metal when I was a kid and he was with Sabbath. I was mesmerized by his voice. Through Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and Dio, he dominated any stage he stepped foot on. The ultimate metal story-teller. Legends live on.
Lovely to see your enthusiasm. Got to see him a few years after this; envy that there is so much more for you to see for the first time! Love from Kalamazoo
I love seeing you enjoy this... there is so much more substance to good metal than most realize... Go listen to the studio version of this also please... actually the whole heaven & hell album. Hell he had to fill Ozzy's shoes. And did in a great way.
Thank you so much Beth! I’ve been digging into the various vocal coaches vids and I love how many technical tidbits you throw out. So many of your observations on the mechanics of making sound are things I unconsciously do but hadn’t bothered to really dissect. Pointing out specific ways of modifying mouth shape and breathing and what have you is what I want from these vids. Thank you for your generous analysis!

This is Dio the solo artist with his band, if I'm not mistaken, after he left the Sabbaths. And since he co-wrote the song, he took it on tour with him as a solo artist.
I believe you are correct, i dont see Tony Iommi and i do believe that is Vinny Appice on the drums but Vinny always plays with him..( even in Sabbath).
Anyone can play anybody's song(s) live, but if they put it on a dvd/blu ray; they will have to pay royalties to the musician or band that they covered. Unless they wrote the song from a their former band, then they won't have to pay royalties. Ozzy sang Sabbath songs. So many musicians cover others songs. It's a tribute.
A truly great singer. Beth, you should watch the Sam Dunn documentaries on heavy metal. You may enjoy them; they give great insights into that world. If you decide to they are called: Heavy Metal: A Headbangers Journey, and The Evolution of Heavy Metal. Sam is an anthropologist, and shows the world, and its culture in a brilliant way.
Glad to hear this! It made me appreciate that much more how unique and talented Dio was. I was lucky to see him twice live in the early 80's. He really did have a monstrous voice that was endlessly expressive. The guy fully committed, which combined with his talent, made him mesmerizing.

Oddly enough, Tom Jones is known for blowing out microphone diaphragms as well. Powerful voices on those two, although completely different genres.
Is there a video? Please
Usually, he brought his own mic, just for that reason😂😂😂
The variation on the studio version when performed live shows you how incredibly capable and creative he was. Rest in power, Ronnie.
This is one of those where having someone who knows what she is talking about be so impressed with one of my heroes, who I have always thought was great, is so very satisfying :). Oh and your points about expressing emotion through the music are so very on point about what Rock is all about.
RJD sang Doo whop in the 50-60s and then went hard in the late 60s. The guy can sing.
You have to react to The Man On The Silver Mountain by Rainbow live 1977, Ronnie James Dio is the singer
Startruck live 1977 is better
ua-cam.com/video/HjNwfwUrSQw/v-deo.html
Ronnie James Dio couldn't sing badly if he tried!!!
When she said from the beginning"nice tone". After I heard that I immediatly said to myself "You have no idea lol"
She should of just said This is a metal God done
Exactly that!
You should try Kill the King or Man on the Silver mountain
Both with this singer
With the band Rainbow in 1977
Alfonso Martinez or temple of the king. Rainbow was criminally underrated.
Alfonso Martinez
Stargazer or Light in the Black are probably two of his strongest performances of his career!!
🤘🏻😈🤘🏻
at 9:15 in ua-cam.com/video/ysGbtXt82lg/v-deo.html , this is one of DIOs most ferocious reprise as metal vocalist
If you say Bruce, I´ll have to say Eric Adams.
Thebeastfromnorth75 ooh! Yes! Overlooked him.
band77one he’s brilliant, I agree, but overlooked and I don’t think really classed with mighty names like Dio, Halford, or Dickinson.
@@werewolftoby No probs ;)
He filled in for Rob Halford for Judas Priest for 2 albums, covered King Diamond nearly flawlessly, and is sometimes the singer for "Dio Disciples" (A tribute band consisting of former Dio band members and various vocalists.)
Peace
Saw him front Black Sabbath on the Mob Rules tour. I was deaf in one ear for two days, but it was awesome!
Same here did at the Hammersmith Odeon - awesome concert
Cool... I saw them at the old Coliseum in Houston, TX. Believe it or not, the Outlaws opened up for them. Weirdest bill I've ever seen: heavy metal and Southern rock.
Lucky
That's a nice choice for Blind Guardian :)
DIO - I love him and listened to Holy Diver a dozen times over the last week - it helped me to move forward in my life.
His passion always shone through in his voice. One of the best voices of all time. His friend Glenn Hughes is another one. The real deal.
Dio was an amazing singer... and having a very clear diction. When Dio sings you can hear every single word. That also tells a lot of about vocal tehcnique and how well developed the overtones are.
One of the best, if not the best vocalists of all time.
Other great performances of him:
Rainbow - Stargazer
DIO - Holy Diver
DIO - Strange Highways
Black Sabbath - The Sign of The Southern Cross
Heaven and Hell - Bible Black
Just a few, because, there are too many.
My personal favorite is likely All the Fools Sailed Away, to be honest.
Black Sabbath - Die Young
@@kemanorel3110 Too much to choose from
Thank you for reacting to Classic Metal! Dio is indeed one the of greatest!
Please react to Deep Purple - Child In Time.
Ronnie James Dio...truly one of the best vocalists ever...try his song "Heaven and Hell" by Black Sabbath next. Really powerful
Best fucking song ever, well maybe not, but it sure is my favorite song, from my favorite album, from my favorite band and favorite singer lmao
freyzer B.Castro You seem to like the song. I’m not sure.
So true. Halford, Dio, Dickenson all have such different voices but they use them to their full potential.
Totally agree, they're both soooo incredible in different ways
@Peace Sells, But Who's Buying? Ok...I'll bite...who is first?
True, Bruce is also a monster. I personally like more Dio tho.
Miss him so much :(
I'm joining the requests for Symphony X and Blind Guardian. Also asking for Avantasia (The Scarecrow) and Ayreon (The Day that the World Breaks Down), both projects with many great singers, it'd be fun for you and we'd enjoy it a lot!
Avantasia and Ayreon would be amazing, especially those songs, totally agree!!
Yeah, let's join the Symphony X and Blind Guardian mob, specially the first now that she listened to Dio
@@Blueswailer lolz
Aaron On Autos Halford is the only other metal singer that could rival Dio. Dio just owned every song he sang like a beast!!!
I’m encouraged when I see youngling’s get so excited hearing Greatness live for the first time!
All the fools sailed away - From the album "Dream Evil" - from Ronnie James Dio... Is a "must listen to"...
Yes....and Shame on The Night....
Temple of the king....
Dio is one of the greatest singers of all time including all styles and genres. A true legend.
Powerful Singer, with a great heart. Got to see him with Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath and his own band.
Dio just had effortless and complete control over his voice, to a point that is beyond impressive.
This wasn't Ronnie's best performance, but it still wipes out all competition.
For me this is the best Children of the Sea performance
The first Sabbath I ever heard was the “Live Evil” album. All the songs there also became my favorite versions.
The studio version for me is way better but I did enjoy the live version here.
I love his performances during the rainbow era, specially the live in Munich 1977 concert. Before he gained world wide recognition from Black sabbath or DIO. He was a complete singer and could pull off everything.
I prefer this vocal performance over the studio vocals. Here, he adds more grit to his voice and sings more expressively (2:54, 9:34).
Ronnie James Dio is a class of his own. As far as I know he was completely self taught.
FHB71 and this is live, think of that for a second. Pure live no tricks
You should review Stargazer by Rainbow, another band in which Dio sang.
Love it!
I'm in love with your kindness and easygoing talking, a smart woman is always a pleasure😍
RJD pulled me into metal when I was a kid and he was with Sabbath. I was mesmerized by his voice. Through Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and Dio, he dominated any stage he stepped foot on. The ultimate metal story-teller. Legends live on.
For a guy who was just over 5 ft tall, he became a giant the moment he sang. Ronnie James Dio is a metal GOD. RIP.
Jason Trinque - He was 5’4” not 5’0”. I know 4” may sound trivial to most of us but when you’re 5’4” tall 4” is a huge difference.
Please react to Symphony X Sea of lies live in Bloodstock. The singer is fantastic and he is influenced by Dio
The story goes Dio's warm up was a joint and a glass of wine
.....ya, Scott Ian told so... 👍
Lovely to see your enthusiasm. Got to see him a few years after this; envy that there is so much more for you to see for the first time! Love from Kalamazoo
Since I started watching your videos, I hear so much more now when I listen to music. Every song I thought I knew is brand new again.
I love seeing you enjoy this... there is so much more substance to good metal than most realize... Go listen to the studio version of this also please... actually the whole heaven & hell album.
Hell he had to fill Ozzy's shoes. And did in a great way.
Bruce dickinson - tears of the dragon (mtv). amazing performance!!
Dio and blackmore was the most powerful combination in the history of rock music! No band came even close. Period
It's a shame that he died too soon. Rip Ronnie. We all miss you. Thank you for all that you have given us.
Ronnie James Dio was a god. This performance is a major dose of ASMR. Goosebumps!
When Ozzy says 'The Man with the golden voice' pay attention That be DIO.
lovely review o f something I've been loveing for decades without knowing the science behinds it
Thanks Beth! Dio was and still is amazing! He’s voice is/ was incredible indeed! For those who likes Dio’s voice and appreciate to sing his song your tips are great value. Thanks a lot 🙂
Awesome reaction! Dio was an absolute beast.
Dio is just fantastic.
You need to react to Stargazer.
Possibly the best vocals from Dio.
RIP you legend!
Stargazer and A light in the black from LP Rising ( in fact, all songs from this LP are masterpieces).
Heaven and Hell with Sabbath and Holy Diver + The last in line + Sacred Heart are masterpieces, too.
Ronnie James was the greatest. RIP.
thank you Beth for your reaction and analysis. Im an old cover band singer and you actually do some coaching within these videos that has helped me. The rest are just reaction videos. Thank you
U made my day reacting to do I saw him back in 1985...he was amazing live...I miss not getting to see him live again..thanks Beth for this..u give me hope for the younger people..love ur channel old school metalhead..56 yrs old..cheers from kansas city
Tenacious D - Kickapoo would be great to react to! You'd get some Dio, some Meat Loaf, a lot of Jack Black and a good portion of entertainment!
holykuhmeinefresse Haha yes!
And more than a few f bombs!
@@henrynoel3336 True, but I guess that's inevitable with Jack Black. I hope that won't stop her from watching it.
Hey! Check out my latest Tenacious D reaction here: ua-cam.com/video/B5nQuaknt40/v-deo.html
I saw him twice on this tour. Can't believe it was so long ago now. He was amazing live. Tiny man with a huge voice, and sadly missed.
