  • The Nikon 28ti is my favourite film point-and-shoot camera of all time, even more than my beloved and well used Ricoh GR-1. Is it the greatest though? I think so and the video explains why. I've returned the camera back to the Darkroom and is currently available to win if you enter their regular photo contests. Thanks to Philip for the long term loan, and wait to see what the next camera they send me to review. Thanks for watching and don't forget to go Ninja on the like button if you want to see more film camera reviews!

    Someone needs to start making premium point and shoot film cameras again given how much people are willing to pay for them.

      Exactly, and they're way easier and cheaper to make than a digital camera! The mju ii retailed for $99, they could bring it back just like that (or an improved, though similar model) and sell it for $150-200 and it'd still be a steal

    Finally a 28Ti review. Great video, BHT, thank you. I love my 28Ti and decided to keep it over the Contax T2. I just loved the shooting experience so much more, and the metering is just amazing.

    I bought a Nikon 35Ti rev.2 from Japan, obviously at that time Nikon were listening to the customers feedback
    Since my version is equipped with the same 28Ti flash switch.

    Great review as always, but you forgot to mention the panorama mode :)
    I actually sold my F5 for this when I was traveling around China. Had it as my only camera for years. Love it, miss it. You are so right about the coolpix A.
    Now my digital GR is the only thing that comes close.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  6 років тому +1

      ha ha, ya the most important feature :-) Nikon really botched the CoolPix A. First of all it was $300-400 more expensive than the GR, and since it was a 28mm equiv lens, it should have given a nod to the 28ti.

    Thank you for the review: I bought a second hand 28Ti off a professional photographer that had used it as back up, and it is both scuffed and weathered. Takes perfect shots still, though. Originally viewed in a shop window in ´94, when pushing my sons trolley and dreaming the impossible dream, like you. Later in 2005 buying it on a whim. I cheat though, using the Ilford XP2 b/w film that allows it to be commercially developed via C41 process!! Gotten too old to process myself..

    A bit of a longevity warning - Like the Leica Minilux, the flexible printed circuit in the 35Ti/28Ti lens to body, does become intermittent 'open' (broken contact). This 'paperclip effect' occurs because of the lens moving in & out everytime the lens is tucked inside the body along with movement from focusing. - Unfortunately it will require a replacement Lens Unit assembly; so good luck finding parts. - To avoid or delay this inevitable failure, let the 35Ti or 28Ti go to sleep on its own. Then just touch the release button to wake-it-up ! - The lens will only need to go IN-N-OUT when the battery or film is changed. - So there you go, less mileage on the aging flex...

    Great video. Surprised nobody mentioned one error in the video about Time mode. You don’t hold the shutter down. You press once to start and once again to stop. You can also use the self timer in conjunction to start it hands-free. Granted you have to press to stop, but that way you cut motion potential in half.

    The flush little buttons on the 35Ti were one of two primary reasons I bought a Contax T2 instead. Whatever is said here, the collection of little watchlike dial readouts in the top plate are hard to read in practice - pretty useless as a manual override option. These Nikons had a massive set of user modifiable options, but they are stacked in a series of multi-level menus (operated by "little buttons") which are so user unfriendly that you must have the manual in hand to use them at all. Bottom line: most of those options go unknown and unused. Undecided, I bought a Contax T2 and a Nikon 35Ti. used each a bit to see which was more practical to use in the real world. I also ran a full lens test sequence using a lens test kit from Modern Photography many years ago. Kept the Contax; resold the Nikon (made $15 on the deal). The 28Ti changed to the switch to control flash modes, replacing the truly useless buttons on the 35Ti.

    Nice review. That top plate display is quite cool, almost steampunk! The only issue with this little beastie is the noise! It sounds like one of those wind-up toy kaiju or robots from the 1960s-70s!

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  6 років тому +1

      Ya most of these point and shoots were noisy, but the Nikon 28ti and 35ti were exceptionally noisy. The Konica Hexar is the only exception. It’s as quiet as a modern digital camera.

    • @quentinnewark2745
      @quentinnewark2745 5 років тому

      Rekishi no Tabi I had one, so loud everyone turns round to look, forget discretion. You start to dread pushing the shutter and invoking the robot. My Nikon Z on silent is about the same weight, and makes no sound at all.

    Thanks for the honest review. I just picked up a near mint Nikon 35ti in Japan for a song at a 2nd hand shop that had no idea what they were worth. It's not easy to get the custom settings made but I finally got the flash in the off mode so I only need to hold that little button to make it fire. I'm looking forward to taking it out for some street shooting, I only wish I could travel down to Tokyo but the COVID has put a halt to travel here.

    I still like my gr1s. Snap mode presets the focus and the lens does not move or make noise, quick and quiet. The 28ti can preset focus but the lens move into position on half press, slower and louder. But matrix metering and the obvious cosmetics keep it in the rotation still

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  6 років тому

      Yes that’s the one thing that really slows you down. I wish when you manually focused that the camera actually moved the elements into place. My GR is definitely a quicker shooter.

    Brought back memories of my 35ti from years ago it was a great performer and so stylish. Still have my Ricoh GR1v and must use it more. Like the photo of your wife (Camera Girl) but she always looks so serious, does she just tolerate being photographed and prefers to be behind her own camera?

    Love it, bht! That 28Ti, GR21, Klasse W are m favs because of the wider lenses. Though these days for p&s I've stuck to the Contax Tix and a big supply of APS that I came across. Very underrated camera, want a loaner and some film? I have an extra one I can send you if you'd like.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  6 років тому

      thanks and that's a very generous offer, but I'm backed up with review gear as it is. Yes the Contax Tix is a controversial camera because of the APS format. I was at Kodak when it was launched and I wasn't a fan of the format, but that's nothing against the Tix itself. It's great you came across tons of film though. Kodak Advantix film?

    Tyler's transplants suggestion : put the matrix metering from the 28ti into the contax t3 with its zeiss lens. Results would be flawless. 👍 Plus i like the t3 look better . O yea and transplant the needle gauges into it as well. Can't forget them!

    Thanks a lot for reviewing it, i have not had one - yet - but i may need to start looking! If you like those dials, check out the Epson R-D1, the 1st digital rangefinder ever made, marketed by Epson, built by Cosina Voigtlaender on a Bessa model and equipped with the most beautiful analog dials ever seen on a camera (also by Seiko).

    There’s apparently a way to make the 35ti make the flash work how you want it to work using the custom functions but I don’t own one yet so I don’t know how reliable or good it is. I really want the 35ti due to my preference for 35mm.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  5 років тому

      Yes I have the link in the video description that gives the downloadable manual to access custom function. However, there is a later version of the 35ti that does have the same slider switch as the 28ti, but all the models are only coming from Japan so I think it was a Japan only release.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  6 років тому

      Yes sort of, or TTL. Often it’s metered off the film plane via the first curtain shutter, but the Nikon did it twice, once pre exposure and then again during. Hey weren’t the only ones doing this, but it was unique to put in a compact point and shoot.
