  • *Sorry for some of the audio, the outside locations were noisy and I was less experienced with audio.
    Recent videos have an overall better presentation.
    The Nikon 35Ti is one of the most famous premium compact 35mm film cameras from the 90's and it is also one of the most advanced compact cameras ever made. In this review I go through some of the advantages and disadvantages of this stylish compact.

    I believe you can turn the flash off as default in the advanced settings. I'm not sure because my version has the switch like the 28Ti but I'm pretty sure you can.

    I also have issues with 3-4 images from a roll being out of focus due to the autofocus... I think it has to do with it's less than stellar autofocus speed and our expectations from shooting modern digital cameras which catch focus at a split second.

      Hello and thank you for the comment. This video was definitely compromised in many ways but I have learned a lot about filming myself since and I hope that comes across in the more recent videos! Autofocus on some lenses and camera systems can hunt a lot as you say and can be distracting. I try to use manual focus when I can but digital lenses don't always have the best feature set for that, this topic is something I'm interested in talking about so I appreciate the comment.

    I recently got one and it is definitely fashion over function. The flash seems to always want to fire even in sufficient light, so you have to disable it manually for almost every shot, or deal with the incredibly fiddly custom function menu to force it off. The settings window on top is only useful for manual shooting, and the shutter lag even when manually focusing kills its potential for fast street photography. The most egregious example is the analogue exposure counter dial, which is unreadably small and rendered useless by the LCD counter on the same top panel.
    This camera has so many advanced features but it's such a hassle to use them that you just end up using it as a point & shoot, which is a huge waste of potential.

      Thanks for the comment, I think you summed up the 35Tis shortcomings perfectly! The flash and many other functions are so finicky, with a slow lens it just doesn't make sense unless you really want to slow down. As you say, this camera has so much good but the way you interact with it makes it feel like one step forward and two steps back. Its a cool piece of history now but not the best choice considering all its contemporaries.

    agree with your thoughts (the quickly delivered thoughts!). i'm new to film and initially went for medium format and then picked up the 28ti and 35ti for the opposite experience of the medium format, the no brainer point-and-shoots. i was happy to think they had some manual controls if i wanted them. turns out i do want them. a lot. especially focus, and as you mentioned, moving the camera away from my eye to see what range the focus was at (and then guessing if my subject was in that range) and then recomposing... well, not ideal.
    as it turns out, my 35ti is about to die. i was really hoping to like these cameras and to land on either the 28mm or 35mm focal length in the end. but i'll now be selling the 28ti and including the 35ti for free. i did get some nice images with them. however, i think their greatest asset is their looks.

      Hello and thank you for the comment!! It’s nice to see someone jump right to medium format I think it’s an excellent choice for those who have experience with digital. I would recommend looking into fujis 645 options they are great used as point and shoots, but they can be used more manually as well.
      I’m sorry to hear about the 35ti… unfortunately for as good as they are a lot of the 90s onwards film cameras aren’t as easy to repair. The ti series is really cool and the image quality is pretty impressive but it is not that practical for advanced photography. Compact cameras can be difficult, at times you want control and at times you want freedom but rarely can get both haha one of my favorite compacts is the natura s which has no manual features but always seems to nail focus and exposure! If you want something that will last you a lifetime the Kowa sw is a beautiful wide angle compact that is fully manual, but easy to just take a set it and forget it approach on a sunny day! If you have any questions please feel free to ask! Also I will be making a video on ms optical conversion. I actually have a 35ti lens modified to Leica m mount and it may be a cool option for your situation!

    Thanks for great review. For the T mode, can you set it on self timer to prevent camera shake twice?

    • @TheWholePicture
      @TheWholePicture  2 роки тому

      Hello and thank you so much for the comment! I hadnt thought of that method before. I just tested it and in T mode, with the self timer the exposure starts a few seconds after pressing the shutter but after 45+ seconds the camera did not end the exposure on its own so it would seem that you still need to press it to finish the exposure. This could still lead to blur but it is an improvement over pressing it twice!

      Hey thanks for the comment! You probably made a good trade the ti35 prices haven't changed much in Japan but I'm sure you got a good amount for the contax. As someone who owns both cameras, the contax has a much better system for manual focus and often i just set it to 3 meters and what I want is in focus. I haven't used them side by side for testing things like auto focus...

    Massively expensive for what it is .... I'll make do with my Yashica T4 (bought from new just after it was released) and its mainly auto restrictions.
    I do however love the look of the Nikon and its manual controls.

      Thank you very much for the comment! The prices now are pretty up there... the 35Ti hasn't rocketed like some cameras and lenses but its still pricy. The dials and premium build quality are certainly nice but at the end of the day what counts are the pictures. Although the 35Ti is capable of taking wonderful pictures it takes more effort than id like from a compact. I've used the t scope and t proof, both excelent cameras with sharp optics that usually get autofocus right! Just wish they had more manual controls haha I'll make a video on those when i get the chance!

    Is it possible to manual control the shutter speed?

    • @TheWholePicture
      @TheWholePicture  2 роки тому +1

      As far as I know there is no way to directly pick your shutter speed, but by using aperture and exposure comp you can reasonably control the shutter to a certain extent.

      @@TheWholePicture ok, so the exposure compensation will adjust the shutter speed… thank you

    • @TheWholePicture
      @TheWholePicture  2 роки тому +1

      I haven't used the camera in a while but when you adjust aperture/exposure comp in aperture priority (A) I believe you could affect the shutter speed. In flexible program automatic (P) the control dial will adjust both aperture and shutter and exposure comp here should also adjust both settings. Although it is difficult to consistently get a desired shutter speed, you can fairly adjust to get speeds that are suitable for hand held shots or to add motion blur. I hope that helps!

      Thank you very much for the comment! For these premium compacts its really nice to be able to set the aperture and let the camera take over so you can focus on framing! Cameras like the contax t2 are some of my favorite to "set and forget". f/4 or 5.6 and about 3m manual focus is the best point and shoot experience for me!

    • @TheWholePicture

      Exactly! The one issue i always have with mostly automated or fully automated compacts is they tend to default to infinity focus if the subject is easy to find. Compact cameras are a lot of fun but for the past few years i have generally preferred to take a small manual camera or a compact with manual settings to make sure i always get the photo. If i dont then its on me haha and i cant blame the camera!

His company is ms optics or Ms optical and I'm not sure exactly on the costs I think it's lens dependant and it does take some time for you to get your lens back.

      Ah really? That is something I didn’t know. I do like 28mm compacts more than 35 so I might have to check it out one of these days. I feel like the Nikons also haven’t skyrocketed In price like other compacts…

      I see that now in photos! It does not look different from a distance but when you know its easy to tell. Thanks for the info! Sounds to me like you just want a standard point and shoot. When shooting film the process is always a bit slower so nothing new here. Looks like you just wanted a pretty camera thats overhyped.

    • @TheWholePicture
      @TheWholePicture  2 роки тому

      Hello and thank you for the comment. It sounds like you are making a lot of assumptions about what I want from film cameras and photography in general. By film being a slower process do you mean compared to digital? Because I would strongly disagree. A camera like the contax t2 can go from off to taking a photo faster than most digital cameras, and if you have a fully manual camera the moment you press the shutter you get an exposure. For my style of photography I value the ability to instantly get a photo before a unique moment has passed. In this way, the Nikon 35ti feels "slow" because changing settings requires you to stop photographing and look at the camera. That combined with the focus make this camera slower than it has to be. In the video I said an ideal compact camera should be accurate and snappy enough that all you have to think about is framing and exposure compensation, to me that does not sound like a standard point and shoot. Most average PnS I have used don't expose or focus accurately without some time and patience. Cameras like the Contax T2, Minolta Tc-1 and of course fully manual cameras are accurate and snappy, which lets me focus on what I think is important, framing and timing.
      And I'm sorry you got the impression I "just wanted a pretty camera thats overhyped". To clarify, I wanted to try a part of camera history for myself to see if it would fit my workflow. I then wanted to share my thoughts on it to hopefully help others in their search for a fitting camera.

      Hello and thank you for the comment and I'm sorry you got that impression from the video. I used the 35Ti for many years and every review has the users opinions but i felt confident in my ability to use the camera. While it may work for others, I felt the 35Ti did not work for my style and subject matter and tried to explain that in the video. With compact cameras, even advanced premium compacts, there is a degree of trust you must give to the camera for automatic operation and I personally was not confident in the cameras ability to get the photos i wanted a majority of the time.
