Isn't it interesting that we are driven culturally through music, advertising, movies, etc to devalue traditional relationships despite the fact that the result is destabilized families, insecure and often unsafe children exposed to a litany of non-family members, poverty, dependence on government, poor health, educational deficits (both in the student and the schools), exposure to violence and drugs yet our "leaders" keep telling us they are fighting for more of the same? How much of that can be attributed to good decisions and habits vs people's brains being wired differently? Curious what other people think.

It's wild I don't remember anything about that class, but he was a great and fun teacher and it was a great class from what I recall of my overall feelings of it.
I think people just watch their parents spend, and already by HS, people are spending crazy amounts. One of the kids I was friends with, was working non-stop to support his GF's BS spending habit... He told me he spent $800 on her for new Clothing for Senior year of HS... The fuck? I was shocked.... I still wear clothing from middle-school/high-school, so it's just weird to me. People always want new.

The others often try to sabotage that because they don't want to be confronted with the reality that they, too, could lose the weight if they wanted to. Same thing for finances. - don't accrue debt, compounding interest is financial death; kill any unnecessary expenses until death is tackled
      - it's tempting to spend money to enjoy life when young but that's the best time to start saving/investing; keep costly fun to a bare minimum and save like crazy
      - diversify and build contingencies
      - assets that make you money are where wealth is at, side hustles and the like will never make you rich unless you can reliably grow that to business making millions (in which case it shouldn't be a side hustle)

I think the "can I have some budget for eating out?" question is legitimate, Caleb. You can't take someone who's been spending a crapton of money eating out and tell them they have to stop completely for the next X number of years, in my opinion it's unrealistic and it's just going to lead to them doing it anyway. And once they start breaking the budget to eat out it will make it easier to justify breaking it in the future for other things like vacations.
I feel like allocating even just 100$ a month to entertainment right off the bat is probably more sustainable and would lead to better compliance. Whether she uses those 100$ to eat out or saves them for a vacation is up to her, but imo you NEED some budget for just enjoyment.
I personally went years without taking a vacation and almost never going out, but most people couldn't do that when they can see the money in their account and they feel like they have it.
The American system with 401ks etc is great for people who can ACTUALLY think long term, but I think it's actually very detrimental for the average financially illiterate person compared to what we have here in Italy (where the state just forcibly takes 40% out of your salary and ostensibly sets it aside for your pension).

    • @melynn44
      @melynn44 Рік тому +7

      Agreed. It's like dieting.
It is much more sustainable to eat in moderation, and to be able to go out to eat one or twice a month. Than to just go cold turkey on everything. I know this from experience. I have had much more success with eating what I want to eat, in moderation, than cutting things off entirely.
Like you said, it is just unrealistic, and makes it that much more likely to break, and harder to come back from breaking.

Reminds me of one of a girl I know :( she's drowning in debt but always decides to buy fancy, expensive clothes and go on vacations to big cities to drink and party. It breaks my heart that these types of people don't see the future and how these decisions will seriously impact them later.

To be fair, her base situation has her in a much better place than MOST other guests on this show lol. She reminds me of many people her age when they make decent money, horrible budgeting skills!

Exactly I need her to go on Ramit Sethi's show to take advantage of better investing skills. I love the way he breaks that down for higher earners 70k and above.

She thinks her salary justifies reckless spending across every category, but it's just about the only positive aspect in her financial profile. I'm genuinely scared for her.

My husband and I have had such a rough month financially. I’m thankful we had a well established savings. After an unexpected flight for my husband to see his suddenly dying father, and the need to replace doors on our house to hopefully improve the cold air leaking in and extra heating costs during the next winter (Northern MN here) and a bunch of unexpected medical bills due to my high risk pregnancy…Uufda, this month has really made me happy we have stashed so much away. It still hurts to use it, but at least it was there! Now I’m just anxious to build it back up! But these videos really help me stay focused on the goal at hand. I just wish they were 5 days a week so I’d have something Tuesday and Thursday to watch while I work also 😂

I’m so happy you brought up the money guys. I’m a heavy youtube user because my job allows headphones and you two are the channels i love watching the most. It would be really cool to see you do an audit on them if they agreed. Or even see you as a guest on their podcast to break down how you audit yourself. Keep up the amazing work❤️

I work in Staffing and am always working with people who don't know how to handle money & budget. Had a young lady in 2023 who lost 3 jobs through us from 2022-2023 and often would complain about the money she wasn't making, but would take these vacations all the time during the probation period of her hiring process.
One day a company we had her placed at reached out letting us know she is having attendance issues & were just made aware she plans on going on VK at the end of the month & that VK on top of the attendance issues would lose her the job. I called her & let her know that this is going to lose her another job and the immaturity I witnessed was insane. "I gotta LIVE MY LIFE!" was the excuse, but I reminded her how close she was to losing her apartment (admitted by her when we gave her the 3rd chance to succeed) and she didn't care. She lost the job, we terminated her contract right after.
