A few months ago I purchased this pack. To research this pack, it took some digging but was pleased with what I found. First of all, it is manufactured by Ferrino, which has a good reputation in Europe for outdoor equipment. They also have a North American division as well. Also, it was designed in conjunction with the elite alpine troops of the Italian army. Something also interesting is that the frame sheet and the extra compression straps are made to convert in to a leg splint. I have to say that for what i paid for the pack, the quality, and capacity it is an excellent value.

HI, I'm italian and I purchased this pack too. It's really super, reliable, and very strong. it is sold with two additional pockets which increase the total capacity to about 100-110 liters. It also has many internal compartments and numerous pockets that allow you to carry many items.
You can have a look at its technical details here : issuu.com/treknatura/docs/ferrino_military_2010

I can confirm that is a great pack. Confortable even with really heavy load thanks to his padded shoulder straps and weight distributing system. I used it in many airsoft tournaments with no resupply and never let me down. It's a bit expensive to buy, but definitely worth it to the last dime.

Hey Luke I'm italian and I can tell you that this beast is issued with another small 30-40 liters assault backpack that can be strapped on... similar to the ILBE. this is meant for our mountains units that have to carry tons of equipment. 3.bp.blogspot.com/-41tehp9gYo4/ULNtYcID6FI/AAAAAAAADXY/wAdC9iFlW-g/s1600/TBL+35+TA+-1a.jpg

I have one of these packs and it is AMAZING. It's as if the designer asked the customer what features they would like on the pack and someone said, "Everything. Just put everything on it." It has many well-designed pockets and straps, and the suspension system is very comfortable and adjustable. You may be tempted to throw a hundred pounds of gear into this thing, but you don't need to - it will carry smaller loads. :)
And it's in Vegetato, my favorite camo pattern. These are currently sold out but if you can find one, check it out.

    Hi. Ex paracadutista.
I revered this backpack, it was one of the veery few pieces of gear that the italian army issued that were made and designed properly.
Used mine for years, always treated it best i could, never failed me. Never had doubts.
As a side note there is no "surplus". We had to turn our stuff in on our way out. Considering buying one now since prices have halved.

Unfortunately for me I'm not able to link in to the website because I'm using my cellphone and it doesn't show the description box, or I just don't know enough about using this cellphone, lol. Could you please send me the website info so I could order that pack, it's simply awesome 👌 and so is your channel. God bless you and keep up the great work.

This is truly the ultimate Bergen for Italian forces and all forces including there coastguard, it was designed to cover all the terrain Italian forces cover from lowlands, rolling hills and mountain expanses, there is also a add on equipment for mountaineering so you can climb with it and carry the climbing gear hence why so large, with just under 150 ltrs of space service man can carry all that they require from shelter, equipment and weapons, where there’s no goats to carry your gear there are these Bergen’s, it’s a shame to say that even the British army Berghaus Bergen only comes close 2nd and that no other military Bergen gets anywhere close and added bonus which not if any do is that this can be carried over body armour and worn comftably hence the padding, gets my 👍 and I have two !

I like the pack, but gotta say after watching a bunch of vids about recce and etc that I see validity in the notion of 'keeping the top of your pack so it doesnt go above shoulders'.
That being said, I think the big +1 this pack would have is if you could collapse upper portions so it doesn't go above shoulders.
I do like rucks like the Dutch DPM Woodland (65L?), the British is it MDP which is very similar w/ rocket packs (but does have molle the Dutch one lacks), the German hiking/trekking 65L flecktarn pack, etc. IMO most rucks suffer from 1 or more of 3 major issues (in my eyes again:
    - Lack of good support (IE no semi/full padded cumberbun, shoulder straps too narrow/un-padded) etc.
    - Lack of compartments (US Molle II w/ 1 giant = great but also horrible) separate comparts for sleeping on bottom, stuff on top, rocket packs on side optionally, etc) are all a +1 since everybody uses rucks for different roles.
    - Lack of molle on back surfaces [opposite side from one on your back] (modularity for additional packs): even if it was 1 giant compartment, no rocket packs, upper 'claymore' pouch', built in hydration bag slots etc, Molle on the outside (and a +5 some on inside to optionally add them) is just a massive bonus.
I have looking to get a ruck outside the US Molle II and many of the above I've been looking at but they seemed lacking in again 1 or more of these 3 areas.
Mind you: I only intend on carrying 30-60lbs (prob more like 40ish most of time), but climate is temperate (and somewhat uncommon) in no real mountains, (highest elev is 2k ft) but terrain can be from open prairie to bluffs to swamp and temp swings from -40 (extreme) avg of 0-10 F in winter to peaks of 95-105 regularly in mid-summer. So, I a solid pack that I can swap the right supplies in, bcuz in some ways (its a bit extreme) depending on where you are.
I do like this pack and will be looking into finding a used one at a good price. It seems to pass all 3 of the above.

Just the thing when you want to travel fast and light! I am sure there are situations when you could make use of this, but when you realize TWO 55L packs have less space than this thing, it is going to be a pretty rare trip that requires something like this.

This pack may be consider ultralight.....for a giant! :D
Seriously though, I get why packs like this are so popular these days. They are inexpensive, offer tons of space, can be compressed to fit smaller loadouts and they are built like tanks.

      @cthulhu6697 5 років тому

@@TheOutdoorGearReview I agree. If a ruck can be packed with 200 lbs of gear, it can be packed with 75 lbs or whatever. As you've said, Luke, mil rucks are made to haul, they aren't made for hippie hikers. The main advantage is that surplus everything is superior to civvy gear in every way; rucks, tents, boots, sleeping bags, and lots more are of much better quality and hold up way better and for way longer time. They key to any ruck is knowing what to load it with and how. Makes a world of difference. I like this ruck, even tho I prefer the ILBE as my "big ass ruck" (I think I see a huge, Brit mil Bergen in my collection, as I can get surplus for 70 ). It (Vegetato ) would be even better if it had a lot more MOLLE all round and, I'm aware you like the huge, featureless chasm of main compartments style, I like a lot of good organization in rucks ( my main rucks are the ILBE with APB03 assault pack attached ( I'm looking for the radio pouch, something they should have included, as I could affix it to the main compartment inside for organization. When you buy a ruck, especially for 150 and more, it should be complete IMO; which also includes the hydration bladder, which is another thing Coleman's surplus decided "yeah, it's an issued with the ruck item, but they can buy it for more, just like the assault pack".
I just added a Camel Back hydration carrier with 2 hundred ounce Camel Back low profile Crux bladders which both fit in the same carrier attached to a row of webbing closest to me/the frame on the webbing on top of the upper "pillow pocket"/lid pocket and let it hang in a creative way you'd have to see . I think you'd probably think "cool, that's a good idea". I also carry 4 of those tall, light-weight plastic, slender, Swiss mil canteens for another gallon of water in one of the a mortar round pouches ), making full use of pretty much every bit of MOLLE on the main ruck and the assault pack, and the LAPG Atlas 72 ( could you do a review of that ruck, please, maybe an in depth comparison with the 5.11 Rush 72?), and sometimes the Fox 3 day combat pack ( they may call the Atlas 72 and Fox [ Condor makes the same ruck, perhaps you could do a comparison video], but you can easily live for a week or more with the right gear and packing ( I use the sleep gear compartments on big rucks for extra gear and put my U.S. G.I. ICS tunnel tent, along with it's bags for stakes, poles, rain fly, and guy lines in a compression sack, put my improved, gray middle layer of the U.S. G.I. sleeping bag [warm to 10 below zero degrees Fahrenheit] inside an improved U.S.M.C Bivy cover/top layer, rolled up really tight with my mil surplus foam sleep pad in another compression sack, bungee and paracord them together, and lash them on the bottom of the main pack. I do this with my "72 hour" rucks as well
. I'm looking for the ILBE Recon Assault pack, hoping to fit it to my ILBE like the APB03 attaches ( can you do a review of the COMPLETE ILBE Recon set ( Main ruck for the ILBE Recon, the Recon Assault pack ( substantially bigger and with a lot more MOLLE than APB03 ), it's bigger radio pouch, I think it has extra packs like a butt pack, haversack, and who knows what else, and maybe show both the regular Recon Assault pack and the Corpsman model ( basically the same, but with med pouches that attach right inside the main compartment [very useful], and containers and hangers for IV bags )? That would be very appreciated and cool because they seem to be great and most people who aren't Marines, or gear heads like us aren't even aware of the Recon ILBE set. Anyway, I've written a novel, so I'll say please take my requests into consideration, it will be cool, I promise. You are by far my favorite reviewer of rucks, tents, etc......., so I'd rather watch the things I asked to see be reviewed by you. You are simply the best reviewer. You do 360's, you show every feature of the gear, you review foreign gear I've either not heard of ( now I must have a "where is da liquor Finnlandish Svarrta and Russian Splav, the bigger model you mentioned [80 liter?] with the big side pouches [which should be included with ruck] ) and some gear I didn't think you'd review ( like that Czech 16" ruck with front pockets. I got a leather strap model for 10 on surplus [for $10, why not?]. Sure, it's more assault/day pack sized than military ruck sized, but you can pack them until they're bursting at the seams . I typically wear it, along with a mesh FLC/Tac vest with lots of MOLLE all round, when I go traipsing around the woods that surround my house to shoot guns. It's big enough to carry some food [MREs and power bars], water, paracord, carabiners, flashlights, extra batteries, extra compass, extra knife, hatchet/Vietnam Ranger Tomahawk, drug and med bags, trauma kit, fire bag, multi tool, Esbit stove and fuel tabs ( got the Esbits 10 for 15 on surplus ) extra ammo to reload all the high capacity rifle mags on my FLC vest and pistol mags on my pistol belt, a poncho in case I'm deep in the woods and the weather acts up ( you can't be sure what the weather is going to do way up in these mountains here in NW NC/Great Smokey Mountains ) and quite a surprisingly lot more, really plenty of gear for a day of shooting fun. Since it's light even when packed to the gills I can easily bring more guns, mags, and rounds. Have many good ones, bro :)

I was about to buy this when I went to a sight and saw this post: "My real issue is the waist strap which is designed for a small waist. I’m wearing a 38 Levi’s jeans with T-shirt and it’s tight full extended. I couldn’t wear a sweater or even a jacket. So unfortunately I can’t use this if I want to wear a jacket, sweater, coat etc...." Since my waist line is bigger than 38 even this will be a no go for me. I would think it would go around jackets and waist gear but I guess not I will be going for the Military Issue CFP-90 Backpack with Detachable Patrol Pack which holds even more than that pack and only cost around 89 dollars brand new at a sight I found.

For some reason the camo pattern reminds me of marinara and pesto mixed. It may be that, since it's an Italian ruck, it's a subconscious thing. It looks cool anyway. The extra pouches that come with it add to its appeal and value ( and my "I want that" reflex ), I like getting bonus stuff. I see the coolest rucks and gear on this channel, which make me want more rucks and gear. Your garage, attic, wherever you store all the stuff you get, must look like a well stocked surplus store. I'd like to have a peek inside your gear room, I'd probably have a seizure looking at your tons of really cool stuff, you lucky man. Now I'm jealous ;)

But, it looks like if you got tired of packing this thing, all you have to do is lay it down and drive your RV out of it!!! Seriously though, how many pounds was it made to carry like that? Isn't that too big a ruck for not having an external frame? If you truly loaded it idk if that is optimal without a frame

Unless you live in a rural area and know you're going to be deep in the woods with this thing, this probably wouldn't be the best bug out bag. In an urban/suburban environment, you'd stick out like a sore thumb and that's the last thing that you want when SHTF.

+saprissa9 You have no idea what your talking about then. SOCOM gets issued Mystery
Ranch packs and Eagle/LBT Plate carriers and gear and wear crye precision uniforms, that's better than
anything else issued to any military out there. Even regular American
line units like the marines get issued all Eagle kit. Far from crap. In
case you haven't noticed either American gear basically has driven the
basic modern designs for soldiers, from uniforms, to plate carriers and
helmets. Essentially all other western militaries have watched the war
on terror drive the evolution of gear and designs that's been almost
exclusively led by the U.S. Do a little research.

      THEKINGOFMETROPOLIS
I did my research and I have friends in the military. They all agree that the issued gear is bad. Socom gets the good stuff because THEY ARE the best.

A little late to this party, but just got one of these (first impressions are very good…I’d tweak a few things, but for the price I won’t complain…doesn’t really seem that heavy TBH).
In any case, mine came with separate web belt that looks like it was meant to help you couture the stays to your back, but if you were to put on the belt in the same position on your waist, the stay pockets don’t match to the height they would be on the pack. I suppose you can adjust for this, but it just seemed odd. Luke, I was wondering if you got one of these belts, and if you think it’s for stay contouring?

    • @darengeremia

So after some digging I found out this is called the Zaino (Italian for Backpack) TBL 90TA. Apparently the belt I mentioned is an alternate waist belt. You can download the manufacturers catalog here: issuu.com/treknatura/docs/ferrino_military_2010/2

  • @morpheoist

I'm Italian and I know that backpack very well. I must say, however, that the backpack of the Finnish military is much much better, with an external frame that can be used on its own as a mule. 120 liters is a lot, the bigger the backpack the more stuff you put inside! note in its favor there is plenty of room for bulky winter clothes.
