I once lent a book to my girlfriend back then, she took more than two months in giving it back and when she did, the broken parts of the books were fixed, the edges were clean and it sort of smelled like her. In our anniversary she gifted me the third part of said book, that’s the best experience I’ve had lending them. I’m lucky, now I see.

Book nerd rule of thumb: never lend a book you care about. Only lend books you're ready to lose or give up forever. Most people never return books anyway.

I've learned that the hard way. Back when I was in primary school, we had some library thing going on in my class where children would bring books to donate to the class. My teacher said that we would be able to get our books back when we were leaving the school. This was in 2019. Foolish me donated all my Diary of a wimpy kid books (I had the entire series at the time) Then Covid hits, and when it was time for me to go into secondary school, I only got back 5/12 books. One of the five books was written in with markers, pens, crayons, etc. And in another book, my friend glued a bunch of flowers and hearts on the pages. The rest of my books looked like they've went through a war or something (The pages were yellow and some were torn, one even had several bite marks along the spine) So yeah, I'm never sharing my books ever again

I had a teacher who lent me her most precious books and i guarded them with my life. I usually lie down while reading but with those books i sat at the table , didn't eat or anything. It's so important to respect what people value. Those books are her life and she's lending me these for me to read. I should be respectful.its such a basic concept, dunno why many don't understand it.

I once, ONCE lent a shadow hunters book to a friend in highschool, after almost two months *despite she saying that she read pretty fast* she gave it back and, NOT ONLY did she mess up the pages by not using a bookmark, but she also WROTE and OVERLINED the words she didn't understand with a BALLPOINT PEN. I-I, I WAS FUMING. never gave another book to her no matter how much she begged me. No ma'm. You just dont do that to things that are not yours. 😤🥴🤦🏻‍♀️ almost forgot to say, she also covered it in some clear sticky plastic to "protect it" because it wasn't a hard cover. 🤡

I believe this is usually the tactic that someone use when they want to own a book without buying it. They can't do that on library book, so the best way is to get it from a friend. It's freaking ridiculous! There are a lot of them out there and I loathe them. Good on you for no longer giving her any of your books.

My heart literally skips a beat when watching the video, but what surprises me even more is how horrible the stories in the comment section are.
I myself feel so lucky reading those. My family is very supportive of me being a book nerd, and most of my friends in highshool are booklovers and they always return my books with no damage. My deskmate in highschool is an artist, and she even designed her own bookmarks for me. When I used a ruler as bookmark, she would come and say "oh so you need more? I can draw more for you". We can never imagine how to read books without having bookmarks, like our books are too precious to be fold.

My grandma has a huge collection of books and since my childhood I remember people taking books and not returning them. Back at one of my old jobs I used to regularly bring books to work to read while I was on break. There was a spot on a filing cabinet in the back office that had been designated for me to leave my book while I worked so it could stay safe, and I hadn't had any problems for over three years. One day I decided it was safe to bring in a book that was worth a couple hundred dollars (old rare edition, gorgeous cover, all that), and the moment I turned away a new guy brought an open cold drink into the office (which wasn't allowed) and not only set it on the filing cabinet (which had a sign explicitly saying do not do that) but directly on my book!
I turned around and stopped him before a ring could form thank goodness, but that will always be the one day in my four years at that job anyone heard me scream at someone. I never chanced a rare book again.

It had my very first ever plane ticket in it because I took the book with me and it was returned without the ticket. I forgot I’d left it in there. I was not happy they just threw it away.
The next 2 times was with a coworker who was nice and prompt at returning the books. No issues and I made sure no important documents were left inside them before I lent them out. The next 2 times were with a coworker at my next job and she read and returned the first one. I thought I could trust her with my Anniversary edition of The Book Thief, but before she finished it she quit her job and I’ve been struggling for 6 months to get it back.
On a side note: I had a coworker at my last job who lent me a book and she was nice enough to not take my picture with it like she normally does so she can get the book back. I returned it to her in a reasonable amount of time considering I’m a slow reader and the book was The Cursed Child. Lol
