Part 10 - Mercruiser 4.3 V6 Rebuild - Cooling System And WARNING

  • In this video I describe how the cooling system works on a Volvo Penta Inboard engine. The interesting part of this design is the outboard foot does not have a water pump. The water pump is mounted low on the passenger side of the engine driven by a v belt. This is much easier to repair compared to an impeller mounted in the outboard foot. I like it.
    One aspect of this system that I did not cover was whether the thermostat blocks incoming cool water going out the exhaust when it is open. If it blocks the incoming river water flow it would redirect the incoming flow to the engine and hot engine water would then go out the exhaust. I did not test this hypothesis because I did not want to remove the thermostat since it didn’t appear to be easy to remove. Maybe on the next Volvo Penta I’ll remove the thermostat to test this out.
    WARNING - there are videos on UA-cam showing how to winterize a boat engine by allowing RV antifreeze to be sucked into the water inlet on the outdrive foot. Then when they see the antifreeze color begin to come out the exhaust on a warmed up engine they assume that the entire block is filled with antifreeze. Based on the findings in this video I would edu-guess that only about 10% or less of the antifreeeze that was sucked into the water inlet (muffs) was circulated in the engine block so you would end up with a very dilute antifreeze in the block. The videos then say to drain the block which is good but the intake manifold has water pockets which don’t drain by gravity. The only way to prevent the intake from freezing is to remove the large cooling hose from the thermostat housing, work a flexible tube into the intake pockets, and vacuum the water out.

    Is this could be a reason that my engine still mixing oil and water ?Cylinder block repkaced,both heads too (cracked) new intake manifold gaskets…allmost brand new engine.But only thing I didnt check out is this tiny shitty holle in thermostat housing …Is it could be this or area inside intake manifold around thermostat that is “eaten” by seawater and the water leaking into combusting chamber ?But it will cause hydrolock…I dont know what could i do cause replaced all main parts except intake manifold and thermostat…Im waiting your reply.Thanks

      I'm wondering as well because I'm putting a freshly rebuilt engine into a customers boat and don't want to fire it up and mix water. I assumed the water got in from the crack in the block but I want to double check everything before I fire it up.

      All right.What will hapen (will mix oil and water) if I take out the thermostat from the housing ?I think only the working temperature will be lower than normal ,but for sure no overheating…

    Hello, I have a Volvo penta 4.3. Sometimes it runs normal temp and sometimes it runs up to 200 degrees. I’ve change thermostat and impeller with no luck. Any ideas? Thank you.

      Is it overheating underway or just at idle? If it’s just at idle you probably have scoring and gouges in the pump housing that won’t let the pump suck water unless the pump spins faster. Also your exhaust manifolds could be partially blocked. If the water can’t get out the engine can’t take on cooler water.

    No water coming back out of exhaust I replaced water pump thought that was the problem but still not coming out

      If it’s the initial fill it will take a little time before you see water coming out of the exhaust. The engine has to fill up first.

    How do you change this thermostat in this housing?

      @moccasinmarine  11 місяців тому

      Not sure on this rusted housing. Mercruisers use a plastic retainer. Don’t see one here.

      I think you figured it out. Volvo Penta and Mercruiser pretty much use the same engines.
