How to Mask in Davinci Resolve THE MASKING TRANSITION
In this video, we'll show you how to Mask in Davinci Resolve 16 (however works with all versions of Davinci Resolve.) and create that cool Masking Transition people loved from our Premiere version.
Learning how to mask can seem a little confusing to begin with but it is fairly easy once you get the hang of it, this video will show you how.

Can i ask you a ringlight as a gift sir..i am an aspiring vlogger..i hope my channel will grow too..im from philippines.😊
Maybe they expect you to find this tutorial instead 😅
It’s ridiculous how these software programs expect you to find these things out on your own. 😅 Thank you for the info brotha.
Hey yes some things are super complicated to work out on your own! Hopefully on this channel we'll make it easier for people!
But that’s what makes it super epic when you find out something super useful you never found was there.
🤣🤣
Ahhh, no i guess, all softwares as a big as user manual on their website
Davinci has a whole training course which is free
Man this alpha thing got me! Went through a lot of videos to finally find yours! Thank you so much!
Nice, clear presentation. Thanks! One tip that I've discovered in other editors (still learning DaVinci) is if you do the first keyframe and then the last frame before doing the rest you sometimes need fewer keyframes. 😃
Thanks for the tip!
This is so true... Premiere pro taught me this the hard way. I had a crappy laptop😂
Extremely useful, didn't expect to learn about the speed edit but that was a nice touch, thanks!
Thank you! Glad it helped.
Resolve still overall better than Premiere and way more reliable, but I hate that Resolve overcomplicates things like this that Premiere can do in two clicks. (Opacity>Mask in Effect Controls) Also.... Can't apply softness to all keyframes? WHoops lol. Just wasted a bunch of time setting 50 keyframes and now have to go back and copy softness settings. WHY
I was in agony when I couldn't do such a simple masking effect in Resolve. Previous tuts were not helpful, I Even considered going back to Premiere but thanks to this I'm not going anywhere. Thanks Editor Keys.
You're welcome Jonathan!
Great tutorial, you made such imp things so easy... Thanks for tips such as softness and speed ramping as well 👍
Glad you liked it!
Found exactly what I needed. Thank you!
You're welcome Johnny!
Thank you for this quick and easy video!
You're welcome!
its often the simple stuff which are hard to figure out how they work. thanks a lot, exactly what I was looking for :)
Glad it helped!
Nice, you made me learn masking. Thanks
You're welcome!
Dude, you just saved my life! Thank you!
Glad I could help!
Isn't it easier to add the softness before adding any keyframes, just to skip adding softness to each individual keyframe in case you have many?
You're right! either way is good to do
everyone who watches this tutorial should read this first.....
is there no way to make all keyframes soft at once?
@@tazztone I want to know too. Never found this on the internet. How is this not possible on a professional software like davinci
@@tazztone It's ridiculous if this is the correct way to do it...!
GREAT help buddy. Thank you so much really helped me out here! :D
Glad I could help Ray!
Quick Tutorial thanks for this.
I felt however adding softness before is slightly better.
you're welcome, and yes you are right
Thank you so much for this brief and concise tutorial!
Glad it was helpful!
Very useful! Thanks!
You’re welcome, glad this helped
Great simple technique.
Thank you! Cheers!

Nuevo suscriptor, llevaba horas intentando hacer la transición y lo pude hacer con este video
That's so awesome 😎
Thanks Robin

You're very welcome!
Whats better lumafusion or resolve and when is luma coming to android?
🔥 dope tutorial
Thanks 💯
amazing stuff
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed the video!
Thaaaaaanks bro!!!
Very helpful video thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Let’s say I’m trying to do this with a png and not two separate videos, so that something appears behind a moving object on a video clip so the mask only applies to the ping. How would I do that?
Do more of these Davinci Resolve Tutorials
thanks for this tutorial !
You're welcome!
*one thing I don't understand is why davinci makes you do the mask transition in the color tab What happens when it's time for grading and color correction;; how does the node tree get built after mask transition*
I'm still getting my head around this whole node thing in Davinci since switching from PP. Sometimes this node thing makes this Non Linear Editor feel not so Non Linear
Thank you so much !
You're welcome!
thanks a lot my sweetie man, you saved our short movie with your simple explanation (not as Davinci that sucks a lot in the case). 💜💜💓💓💓💓💓💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
You're welcome!
Very god job mate! how can I delete a poit I put for the mask? tnx in advance
Excellent video 👌
Thank you 👍
THANKS! This is way better and less time consuming than the fusion page shape method
Glad it helped!
Thank you! Very useful. I have a question: what would change if i'd like to do a mask from up to down instead of right to left?
you are the best❤
Thank you!
My Soft 1 is greyed out? Do you know how I could fix this problem? great tutorial by the way!!!
I am transitioning from premiere pro to davinci resolve, and this helps me a lot, although there's a lot of habit to be stop coming from Premiere pro, I am sucking it out.
It's always hard switching editing softwares at first! good luck with it
good stuff
Thank you!
thnx mate
You're welcome!
This dude sounds like the guy from Art Attack... i love it
"Try it yourself!"
hey! i saw a few other videos and realized you can also mask in the "fusion" section. I tried both and they work. What is the difference and which should i use?
Fusion is a bit more intuitive in my opinion.
What kind of stock footage are required to create this effect in davinci resolve?
Now my YTPs will be legendary
How does this thing on the color page behave if you try also to do color grading on it?
Could I use a third clip with a green screen background to make a custom repeatable wipe?
That adding softness on each keyframe.. is there a shortcut?
Great!
What is the name of this song in the sample intro?
thanks alot for the video
You are welcome!
Thank you Bro
Any time
HELP. Soon as i make that masking shape with the pen tool the clip goes black. What do i do
So you get this done and then it’s time to grade. Where does the node tree get built?
Broo that's exactly what Iam thinking and can't understand
My keyframe timeline jumps by two frames... can you tell me why? :D thank you!
Thanks a lot.bro
You're welcome!
idk where does that square come from just before you tell us to click on the corrector keyframe, i set the mask an the video from the bottom doesn't show
THX
When i get to the masking tool - i can't click it for some reason. Any ideas?
thank you
You're welcome
I did a double take as I'm sure I've seen you on another channel reviewing Teslas haha. Great tutorial
Hey! Yes that is me 🤣 Thanks for checking both out!
I'm still a cut and splice kind've guy. I don't make pretty videos. This was really helpful though
what if you already color graded? where to place the node then?
Don't wait till the very end to add the softness like he explained. "go back and add softness to each keyframe.." I had like 30 keyframes and had to restart from the beginning.
Add the softness in the beginning, and check how it looks before continuing to the next keyframe.
Also I'm not sure if cutting a clip in half, and setting the second half 2x as fast as the first half is considered a "speed ramp." A speed ramp is a dynamic increase in speed. To do this you would have to right click and use the "retime curve" feature.
Great tip!
The corrector isn’t working. It’s not adding key frames from frame to frame. Any idea?
Works fine except in my case no keyframes are produced. Do I miss a key?
I have an important question. when I'm masking: HOW CAN I ZOOM IN TO MAKE THE MASK MORE ACCURATE? I'm on a MacBook and I don't even know if its possible at all, but it would be so strange if it isn't. so to clarify what I want. I want to zoom in into the clip to make the mask more accurate with small details. would be great if someone can help me. Thanks a Lot, much love from Germany
I know I'm coming here after 3 years but damn, thanks a lot!
You're welcome!
keyframes just dont work everytime I go to change the mask it deselects the keyframe and changes the mask, its like the mask isn't connected to the keyframe
FYI Everybody the video starts at 1:39
Thank you 😂
how do i delete points or delete masks
thx
You're welcome!
0:23 is what you guys should be doing.
jk jk have a greeat night
🤣
thnx
You're welcome!
I can't find the keyframe icon. Where is this?
Great fucken video m8 🤝🤝
Thank you!
One little note from an old editor, always track or modify your mask in reverse. Scale your mask at the end of your transition and then put your keyframes going back to the start so you don't have to guess where to put your first mask keyframes.
Hi, Thank you for the notes!
i think your dropbox storage is full
For some reason I can't move frame by frame using my arrow keys.
This is a great tutorial and I follow it everytime however I can't figure out how not to mess up the mask if I need to grade after that... Any help?
right click on the node you did the masking on and select 'add serial before'.
@@adamdrakestudio thank you! I will try it ASAP
If I understood your comment correctly then do your grading and whatever you want on nodes before the mask via the ‘before serial’ nodes
@@adamdrakestudio so of I do the mask first then I just add another node for the grade?
@@jtchalatsis yes that will work fine. you can have various elements of the grading process of multiple nodes. Id say it's probably better to grade last.
My clip disappear after connecting the alpha output node, why didn't yours disappear?
you forgot to add the alpha output
👏
Thank you!
Wish you would explain why we click certain icons and what they do instead of just telling us to click it. Helps us understand why we're doing it
2:19 he is talking about the power windows tab. Any of the tools in this tab can be used to mask objects. He chooses the pen tool which is normally best for intricate masks that will involve more complex shapes. The icon to the right that he clicks inverts the mask. If he did not click that the clip underneath would show up everywhere the mask wasn’t. This way the clip underneath shows up only where he applied the mask.
yes
this is a nice tutorial but it is actually recommending to it the effect way harder than it should be. you don't have to add softness to every keyframe if you just do it to the whole clip, that's how I do it and it works the same way.
Yeah you're right Pablo! Doing it your way is better
It's weird how davinci has these obscure workflows for simple things. Makes me want to switch back to premiere. Overlays, matte painting, Ease in and out, transform and text are absolute awful with Davinci.
damn dude, in premiere its waaaaaaay easier
You're right! 🤣
HA, leaves the frame,.... no? XD
I didn't like it, sorry but I guess it's a mask, what about having text come outt?
damn dude i love the tutorial but your mic so wet
Dead ass!!! 😂 I had my headphones on and that was cringe. Still love the video but that mic gotta go.
it doesn't work. If i click on corrector nothing happens
Happening to me too!
Hey can someone cover how to cover an object that a person passes by a few times? The person always goes under the cover up instead of over. I will never buy this junk!!!!!
Changing every keyframe one at a time CANT be the proper way to this.
welcome to the world of manual labor my friend
Hi, Unfortunately it is 😢
🤣
My honest opinion.. that doesn't look so great. There must be more to do to make it look better
