Great video, glad to see some love for an early XJ40. To get the hydraulic system mineral oil into the car without the proper bottle and fitting, use a syringe with a 3-4mm diameter tube with 2 slots (about 10mm long) made into one end (which goes into the reservoir), this will allow you to squeeze it in (essentially it's a one way valve which you need to be putting pressure on).

I"ve always liked the look of the XJ40 and personally prefer them with the big rectangular headlamps which seem to suit the square lines better. As someone else mentioned though, in the UK rust is a really serious and terminal problem on them.

I remember checking out a brand new 1988 XJ6 next to a leftover 1987 XJ6 at a dealership in Newport Beach California. Later I refurbished a 1977 Xj6c in 1989; it was my most complimented car ever.

Cool car ! Thank you for the nice video . The XJ 40 is very much undervalued and misunderstood by many people . No much XJ40 lovers around in the world. I love my 1988 3,6 Daimler . Great car if you take care .

Agree 100%. Whilst it was perhaps somewhat "understated" and "toned down" when compared with the series 3, I think the proportions were perfect and personally, I prefer the sharper (often referred to as "boxy") look. Videos and pictures never do them justice.
But I have to say this old girl looks glorious in white and wears those polished 16" dimple sport alloy wheels beautifully.

I've had all kinds of cars from muscle cars to turbo charged imports in my 61 years and chose the unloved xj40 as my last project car , always loved them , my 1990 is very similar to your beautiful 88 , white with a 4.0 liter straight 6 , turning it into a full on Vanden plas spec model , great video , enjoyed it very much.

A good thorough guide to the XJ40. I know quite a few folk who keep a spare crank angle sensor in the boot given how often they tend to be the culprit for ignition failures, particularly hot intermittent failures where the car mysteriously runs fine again when cold.
It is still possible to get the Michelin TRX 390 and 415 tyres used on these and various other vehicles that used them in period, I know at least one company in Melbourne that brings them in. They are for utter purists only though as they are poisonously expensive, do not stack up well against modern tyres in any real respect, and are made only occasionally in very small batches.

The chassis lived for 21 years. It in fact saved the brand from the abyss. Egan’s focus on quality waa key. In retrospect the Daimler V8 (4.5) and Jag v12 should have been part of the plan from the start. The AJ6 still could of been part of it still etc

Excellent roundup of those rust areas Brett. The xj40 is a great ride , people stay away from them for their squarish look. But then again the xjs was originally maligned for the same reason, yet today those prices have gather "investment" momentum.

I like the "squarish" look. IMO, it's possibly Jaguar's most cohesive design; the front and rear are in almost perfect harmony. And I think it has aged very well, indeed. I also like the low and cocooned seating. It feels very sporty, which was lost in the X350 onward.
Unfortunately, I've never managed to own one. I agreed to buy one many years ago in NZ, subject to an inspection, but just after I picked it up to take it to be inspected, someone rear-ended it. I ended up buying a Rover 827 Coupe instead, which I was very happy with, and would still have if I hadn't emigrated.
But I regularly consider buying an XJ40. I've just never seen the right car at the right time. Maybe one day. Last time I saw what looked like a rust-free example at a very reasonable price -- it, too, was white -- I didn't have undercover parking, and I figure that is essential to own one of these in the UK, where I now live.
They are also not ULEZ/CAZ (low emission/clean air zone) compliant -- neither are the X300 and X308 -- so I've started to consider an X350, but they lack a certain something, and of course don't have the classic Jaguar inline six.
Still, I always seem to come back to looking for a Jaguar when I want something different that doesn't cost a fortune to buy and shouldn't cost a fortune to maintain.

I went to look at a 1992 XJ6 Vanden Plas 4.0 today and this video was a godsend! Thank you so much.
Electrical was perfect and it started on the second try after connecting a pretty discharged battery (4ish seconds) and no blue smoke. It's at 43,000 miles, interior roof is not sagged and the seat leather is really good. A few chips on the veneer and bits and pieces missing.
It did have humidity under the carpets on both front seats, best guess is that rust where the bonet closes.
I love the way this car looks and feels, and I really want to take good care of one for the next decade or so but I'm not sure if it might be over priced at $5,000 (Granted where I live cars are insanely more expensive than the US or Oz)
Rust treatment shouldn't be too expensive here and I'm willing to pay for the rear suspension change.
I know this is just a really basic overview comment but could really really use some 2 cents on this.
Cheers! Best XJ40 video for buying on the entire platform!

@tjmthejagmandownunder Wow! Thanks for the reply. I went and got the official record for it. Its had 7 owners in the last 15 years and looks to have been parked for 5 of those years, no info before 2008. The last 4 owners have had it for a year which is suspect.
Not a lot of good care gone to it unfortunately. It has the old leveling suspension, never got switched out. I'm definitely aware that it needs a "not so insignificant" amount of money to restore to where I want it to be.
There's probably about 5 of these in my country, so not a lot of market to pick from but also quite the statement piece.

You find most probably the hydraulic rear shocks have been already replaced to conventional ones by now. You can check in the engine bay to see if the hydraulic lines have been disconnected. Even if it still has the hydraulic shocks in her, it's not that expensive to change.
