The XJ40 was not well received when launched in 1986, but it is actually the model that made me fall in love with Jaguar. And still today it is elegant and beautiful without looking old. The damage does not seem to be that difficult or expensive to repair, so I would go for it.
I drove a 1992 xj40 for about five years. The best car I have ever owned and will probably get one again when I can. It was my daily driver and aside from routine maintenance and some minor issues, I never needed to fix anything on it. Very well built cars if you have a 1990s model. (ford owned jaguar at the time)
As for the rot at the bottom of the wing, if you can get the to the void behind it you will see, probably, a rubber hose coming down from the scuttle area; if you can try and extend this down through the sill or at least allows water to exit that area without collecting at the bottom of the wing. TR's have the/had the same problems and this was the accepted way of dealing with it. The brake fluid is in dire need of changing by the look of it as well. Have fun just like I'm having with my back end.
Yes I will remove it to see if any horrors are lurking back there. Fingers crossed it's all good. Good idé to re-route the drain hose! Hope work is going well on the IRS

As xj40 seems to be so popular among subscribers, general maintenance procedure could be nice video. All what is involved. From oil change (motor, gearbox, differential), other fluids (coolant, brake), though sparplugs, filters, brake disc calipers. .. Could help some people as general overwiev. Me generaly is interested in a headliner change ;)
An amazing find in that condition. Most XJ40s in the UK are not worth restoring now due to extensive rust and electrical issues. Is just not economic when the values are relatively low. Your Daimler version is a rare car and well worth keeping though. Don't forget the Daimlers of that era were the transport of the British Prime Minister and senior ministers!! So for 1600 Euros, is a fair price. Would be great to see a video on leather cleaning and restoration. Your best bet to get those rear window corner chrome trim pieces is a from a breaker. Seen a few on eBay if you also look for XJ40 breakers.
It's sad how many Xj40s get too far gone to save. This one will definitely be saved and cherished for many years. Here in Sweden they are becoming a rare sight on the roads too. I will try a few breakers

Hi Adam, Nice to see a video about the much maligned XJ40. Your new project looks very exciting and I look forward to watching your upcoming restoration. I think your Daimler is a sound car. I have a 1990 XJ40 4.0 LTR that I have owned for many years and I also own a 2000 XKR. I have replaced the headlining on the XJ and similarly need to replace the same on my XKR. Jaguar and headlinings , what is the deal? People seem to think owning an older Jaguar is expensive, I have to say that if you do the work yourself and shop around for parts they are not. I completely agree that it's not as expensive as people think. Just find the right car and do the work yourself. Always found Jaguar parts to cost less than parts for many modern economy cars. Thanks for watching 😊
For the front wings, if you have some time, it may be worth dismount them (just a few bolts). You will have access to the front structure and it can be interesting to clean the rust that attack the beams hidden behind the wings ;-)
Indeed. There's also the possibility of pockets of dirt having accumulated behind the wings, hence why they rust through. If they're cleaned out regularly, there's less risk of that (rusting through) happening.
@@LivingWithAClassic I've been told that it was part of the regular maintenance schedule to clean the area behind the wings, the area that is rusted through on your car. Don't know if that's true... Btw the parts provider I mentioned is called sngbarrat, I don't know if he's from the Uk or France. Certainly worth a look, check the website. Also these cars are notorious for clogged catalytic converters. You don't really notice it until you need more power, in which case it feels like it's wanting to go, but just doesn't accelerate like it should, it doesn't really accelerate any faster on full throttle than on half throttle. It's worth fixing it, these cars weren't that slow when new.
Looking good and most a easy fix. About the headliner. You can pull it out through the door. Tight fit but doable. Just be carefull not to brake the shell at the sunroof opening.

Great car. Do not worry about the rust and paint . Just drive it on the last open Road . ,(Easy to say for me as in the USA we have not inspection ok in Minnesota . ) Mine 1994 XJ6 with a 1990 low 15000 mile motor will be on the road this coming spring .

Hello Adam it.s great to see a lover of old Jaguars I live in the UK and love Jaguars I own an S Type Jaguar 2005 in Radiant Red The car I have was ordered from new with the full specifications of a US export Vanden Plas S Type except right hand drive but due to Jaguar not owning the rights to use the Vanden Plas name in the UK it could not be factory badged as a Vanden Plas but it has all the features such as full leather piped seats like your Daimler, Burr walnut wood trim everywhere, and every other extra available from Jaguar far too many to list it would take age,s. It is like brand new with only 50,000 miles from new I hardly use the car which has its own garage in the front garden where it stored under a cover I just had to buy a new battery for it as the previous one was eight years old and was not charging very well anymore. I will be watching your progress with the new Jaguar and wish you good luck with the new project keep loving Jags just as i do.
You have near perforation at that rust spot-fixing that involves cutting out the rusted area and welding a new piece in. Plus repainting, that is about $1500. The I6 engine looks to be in good shape; make sure that compression is good. 225500 miles is a lot though-don't expect miracles.
The fuel fail 44 is probably just a dry solder joint in the diagnostics section of the cpu if it seems to run fine. My 88 XJ40 had various fault lights flick on and off as I'd drive down a potholed street. It ran perfectly at the time.
@@LivingWithAClassic I had the dashboard out to remove the remains of an alarm system, saw several wires cut off from the instrument cluster so I reconnected them. When reassembled, various warnings constantly displayed- all turned out to be dry solder joints in the computer. Luckily i had a factory workshop manual on cd!

Xj40's are channel closers. I had a 1991 , and a 1988 xj40, and I'd love another one, even with the ruff sounding 4.0 l inline 6, permenant pop off door handles, and that standard mountain high pile of electrical problems. The last one I had was in 2001, or 2002, but I'd love to get a nice one. It's a pretty sedan, and I like "old world luxury", but this video alone shows how wide the gap in quality is compared to my 1997 BMW 540i, which is far from simple to own, but compared to an XJ40, it's almost a 1987 Honda elite scooter, which runs like a top. Out of my Jags, I spent $1200.00 for the most expensive XJ40 I had (neither one.was a "Daimler, or as we got them over here in the states, a "Vanden Plas") in 2001. WOW! l guess l got really lucky. l got my 91 XJ6 for $1200. it has a few issues but it has a straight body and frame and it runs and drives beautifully!
@@LivingWithAClassic The headlining is attached to a fibreglass backing and is re used. The fabric material can be bought on line.It's a little tricky getting the old one out but it can be done.
Hi Adam, and thanks for another interesting video. I fully agree with your plans for the car, inc the interior refurb and detailing. There is no doubt in my mind that this car will be almost like new when it’s finished. To weld in new metal is the way to go on this car, better than sourcing second hand items from a donor or dubious aftermarket reproduction panels.
Quite good shape for the year. The 1992 - 1994 XJ40 saw a quantum leap in build quality. I had a 1994 Daimler 4.0 (one of the last off the line) and it was built like a tank, they were actually a better built car than the X300 that replaced them.
Adam,, I as for your wheels, if you spray them clear coat after you are done cleaning and preparing them the clear will make them shine and protect them. Chris/Colorado Springs/USA
I think I may do that. However I have polished Kents on my 1977 XJ12 and those have stayed nice for 6 years. I put a coat of wax on them when I wax the car
Hi Adam, at 5:54 it looks like a glue of some sort. The left turning signal is definitely glued to the fender, somebody fixed it this quick but sadly stupid way. You will need a set of 4 new summer tires as the ones on the car seem really worn. Looking forward to see more videos with the XJ40 as I wanted the exact same as winter car. You're right, it must be glue! Yes I completely forgot to mention that it needs new tires. Not only are they worn but they're from 2006! Before the car gets driven it will get new tires
Great looking car, I've got a 1990 jag xj40 4.0 in the same colour. Exactly the same rust on the wings, keep a eye out if any water has got to the pillar fuse boxes. Great walk round vid thanks. Matt.
Got the same car of the same year. The bigger problem is the brake accumulator, no more available, so the car doesn't brake correctly. Other big problem is the rust..everythere. also handles are a big problem, because they broke very easily. I changed also all the hoses from the steering/rear suspesion tank because they leak
Ignition leads or wires as you call them, don't use the Jag ones, upgraded mine to a better quality product when I converted engine to run on LPG. Ran like a dream then....no misfires. Engine is bullet proof but winters and road salt saw my one off with extensive tin worm.
Rear sunshades is kind of a funny feature for Sweden. They are manual, you just turn around and pull them up and hook them into the base of the headliner. My VDP does not have those, and I wish it did. I had to add tinting to my windows all around to protect the interior.
I'm going to try them out! I think the owner ordered them since he used to car to summer in Monaco. Kinda proves the clientele these fully loaded cars were aimed at when new

One of the most beautiful cars on earth with the Series 3. It actually is sleeker than the X300/X308 in my opinion. The new Jaguars XF, XE, Pace are horrific in my opinion.
You might try some Simple Green Extreme (the aircraft grade stuff) on the wheels and more diluted for the engine bay. Stuff is like magic on alloy parts and not caustic or nasty smelling.
Looking forward to watching you work through this car, I'm keeping that XJ40 I told you about as a back up car, if the Series 3 has any horrors lurking, I'll forget about it & focus on the 40, hopefully, I will buy one of them in coming few days.
Me too, it's agony waiting for right car to present itself, I began searching last October , when it became clear the x300 was a losing battle, I rather hoped it would continue to drive until the replacement presented itself, it is a nuisance having no car, I do not keep another car as back up
The XJ40 is most likely the most tested and reliable of the Jaguars ever made..The one I have with 89,000 miles never broke down. Check your rear shock bushing for clunk over bumps.common problem after 30 years, If fixed the best riding car I have been in, hardly feel a bump. New cap, rotor, plugs,air filter. oil change use some duralube. the best. you will get 500,000 miles or more on that straight six. get a waterproof cover, if outside.Check for cracks in oil return hose near fuel injectors. aerospace protectant on hoses and wires,all rubber.

Hi Adam. I'm sure someone has probably said at 6.06 that looks like glue seeping down from a crude repair (the plastic clips regularly break.) Lot's of luxury for peanuts really! So what' s the score with the series 2? I suppose you could try a razor blade on that glue, nothing to lose !

Thank you! Yes it can be done at home and it really transforms the car. It was used very little the last 6 to 10 years but was kept insured and inspected. When I drove the car it hadn't move in 7 months
@@LivingWithAClassic That's cool, Adam. My X308 was sitting for a year and a half on almost 92,000. I immediately took the car to Detroit. 1,200 flat miles round trip. Changed the oil and let her sit for a week. Had a family emergency to attend in Memphis three weeks after that. Drove her 2,300 miles round trip through valleys and mountains at night and in the rain. (Took about 20 hours to get there. About 16 hours drive time.) All I had to do was change the wiper blade along the way and add anti-freeze on the return trip. The car is an absolute machine at almost 97,000 miles.

I have owned a lot of 40's and your are right they are rock bottom of the market at the moment so yes I do not think its a great investment in the short term. i am in AU and have gorgeous 94 Sovereign in Moroccan Red and i cannot $8k AU for it! BTW I have in good condition a black Daimler LH tail light assembly in stock if you are interested PM me have also other parts

Check the steering rack for leaks, specifically check if power steering fluid is leaking into the rubber bellows. They're notorious for leaking, mine was leaking on both sides. I think refurbished ones are available, and it's not too hard to swap the rack. There's a French specialist for Jaguar parts, new, used and refurbished, I think it's Barras or something. Definitely worth checking all sources for parts, including rockauto etc.
I had the (cheaper) Jaguar version of this car and it was a money-pit. I'm in the UK and the suspension bushes were £600. The electrics were terrible and the car just 'cut out' when going round sharp left corners meaning no brakes and no power steering. It was sheer joy to drive on the rare occasions that it didn't fail, but it was so unreliable that I scrapped it within six months. There are so many things that go wrong with these cars that it's just not worth bothering unless you can afford a nearly new model. Even then, be cautious.
Really... I recently bought the Cheapest Daimler Super V8, 00 Build. 259000 KM Main reason the Car was like more than half priced than normal , was minor side damage. Jaguar AJ-V8 engine, build after 98 are pretty much Bullet Proof. Rust can be a small problem First U need to find a Good Garage , with love for the Brand, with reasonable Prices! Since I own it , I had a few things done. 2 rust spots welded underneath new brake tubes ,and attachments MOT 2 new front stabilizers new ESP Sensor Changed multi belt, original Jaguar was still OK , but made some sound. 8 new spark-plugs , and bobbin coil. So I saved over 4000$, because I bought the Cheapest, and for less than 4500$, I have a fully working MOT proof Car. She drives like a Floating Cashmere Carpet, powered by a Jaguar engineered , FORD build Muscle Car Engine ! This XJ-40 got less rust , than my later build X308, I am impressed. Also the Interior , good find ! Is it a Long Wheel Base? Good Luck with this Car ! Greetings!
Don’t get into the self levelling suspension because it will eat up two check books. I know because I have been there done that on a similar car. Never again. You can buy a suspension kit that takes its place but again , not cheap.
I wouldn't mess with it. Change the plugs and wash it. Top off the oils. Throwing good money after bad. Mileage is to high. Bottom end repaint to expensive. It will never be a classic. Just throw some fuel in it and enjoy the ride. If you can't afford a jag when they new you can't afford one when they old is the saying. Not knocking you video or channel. Keep your money in your pocket.

If memory serves me (which it often doesn’t) I believe the hydraulic tank also feeds the brake system and I think it uses the CHF fluid.
I believe it does on the earlier ones. This should have the same brake system as the 1991 XJS on the channel, the Teves one
Hello Adam it.s great to see a lover of old Jaguars I live in the UK and love Jaguars I own an S Type Jaguar 2005 in Radiant Red The car I have was ordered from new with the full specifications of a US export Vanden Plas S Type except right hand drive but due to Jaguar not owning the rights to use the Vanden Plas name in the UK it could not be factory badged as a Vanden Plas but it has all the features such as full leather piped seats like your Daimler, Burr walnut wood trim everywhere, and every other extra available from Jaguar far too many to list it would take age,s.
It is like brand new with only 50,000 miles from new I hardly use the car which has its own garage in the front garden where it stored under a cover I just had to buy a new battery for it as the previous one was eight years old and was not charging very well anymore.
I will be watching your progress with the new Jaguar and wish you good luck with the new project keep loving Jags just as i do.

You have near perforation at that rust spot-fixing that involves cutting out the rusted area and welding a new piece in. Plus repainting, that is about $1500. The I6 engine looks to be in good shape; make sure that compression is good. 225500 miles is a lot though-don't expect miracles.
If you take the shell liners out every few years and clean out the dirt build up, it will keep the rust from coming back.
The fuel fail 44 is probably just a dry solder joint in the diagnostics section of the cpu if it seems to run fine. My 88 XJ40 had various fault lights flick on and off as I'd drive down a potholed street. It ran perfectly at the time.

@@LivingWithAClassic I had the dashboard out to remove the remains of an alarm system, saw several wires cut off from the instrument cluster so I reconnected them. When reassembled, various warnings constantly displayed- all turned out to be dry solder joints in the computer. Luckily i had a factory workshop manual on cd!

Xj40's are channel closers. I had a 1991 , and a 1988 xj40, and I'd love another one, even with the ruff sounding 4.0 l inline 6, permenant pop off door handles, and that standard mountain high pile of electrical problems. The last one I had was in 2001, or 2002, but I'd love to get a nice one. It's a pretty sedan, and I like "old world luxury", but this video alone shows how wide the gap in quality is compared to my 1997 BMW 540i, which is far from simple to own, but compared to an XJ40, it's almost a 1987 Honda elite scooter, which runs like a top. Out of my Jags, I spent $1200.00 for the most expensive XJ40 I had (neither one.was a "Daimler, or as we got them over here in the states, a "Vanden Plas") in 2001. I just got a 2002 Vanden Plas about 3 months ago. Only needed a battery and new front shock housings.
Great video I’ve never owned a 40 yet ,the oil leaks will stop when you drive it regularly as the seals shrink as it is left sitting for long periods

WOW! l guess l got really lucky. l got my 91 XJ6 for $1200. it has a few issues but it has a straight body and frame and it runs and drives beautifully!

@@LivingWithAClassic The headlining is attached to a fibreglass backing and is re used. The fabric material can be bought on line.It's a little tricky getting the old one out but it can be done.

Hi Adam, and thanks for another interesting video. I fully agree with your plans for the car, inc the interior refurb and detailing. There is no doubt in my mind that this car will be almost like new when it’s finished. To weld in new metal is the way to go on this car, better than sourcing second hand items from a donor or dubious aftermarket reproduction panels.

Quite good shape for the year. The 1992 - 1994 XJ40 saw a quantum leap in build quality. I had a 1994 Daimler 4.0 (one of the last off the line) and
it was built like a tank, they were actually a better built car than the X300 that replaced them.
This one is in the i between years, still not an early one but not a late one either. This one feels like a tank too. Thanks for watching 😊

I think I may do that. However I have polished Kents on my 1977 XJ12 and those have stayed nice for 6 years. I put a coat of wax on them when I wax the car

Hi Adam, at 5:54 it looks like a glue of some sort. The left turning signal is definitely glued to the fender, somebody fixed it this quick but sadly stupid way. You will need a set of 4 new summer tires as the ones on the car seem really worn. Looking forward to see more videos with the XJ40 as I wanted the exact same as winter car.

Got the same car of the same year. The bigger problem is the brake accumulator, no more available, so the car doesn't brake correctly. Other big problem is the rust..everythere. also handles are a big problem, because they broke very easily. I changed also all the hoses from the steering/rear suspesion tank because they leak
Yes those are common faults on these. Checked those things before buying and thankfully they are good.
Ignition leads or wires as you call them, don't use the Jag ones, upgraded mine to a better quality product when I converted engine to run on LPG. Ran like a dream then....no misfires. Engine is bullet proof but winters and road salt saw my one off with extensive tin worm.

Rear sunshades is kind of a funny feature for Sweden. They are manual, you just turn around and pull them up and hook them into the base of the headliner. My VDP does not have those, and I wish it did. I had to add tinting to my windows all around to protect the interior.
I'm going to try them out! I think the owner ordered them since he used to car to summer in Monaco. Kinda proves the clientele these fully loaded cars were aimed at when new

One of the most beautiful cars on earth with the Series 3. It actually is sleeker than the X300/X308 in my opinion. The new Jaguars XF, XE, Pace are horrific in my opinion.

You might try some Simple Green Extreme (the aircraft grade stuff) on the wheels and more diluted for the engine bay. Stuff is like magic on alloy parts and not caustic or nasty smelling.

Me too, it's agony waiting for right car to present itself, I began searching last October , when it became clear the x300 was a losing battle, I rather hoped it would continue to drive until the replacement presented itself, it is a nuisance having no car, I do not keep another car as back up
The XJ40 is most likely the most tested and reliable of the Jaguars ever made..The one I have with 89,000 miles never broke down. Check your rear shock bushing for clunk over bumps.common problem after 30 years, If fixed the best riding car I have been in, hardly feel a bump. New cap, rotor, plugs,air filter. oil change use some duralube. the best. you will get 500,000 miles or more on that straight six. get a waterproof cover, if outside.Check for cracks in oil return hose near fuel injectors. aerospace protectant on hoses and wires,all rubber.
The XJ40 really was tested extensively and it feels like they hold up well. This one is a keeper so it will definitely see some miles

Hi Adam. I'm sure someone has probably said at 6.06 that looks like glue seeping down from a crude repair (the plastic clips regularly break.) Lot's of luxury for peanuts really! So what' s the score with the series 2? I suppose you could try a razor blade on that glue, nothing to lose !

Thank you! Yes it can be done at home and it really transforms the car. It was used very little the last 6 to 10 years but was kept insured and inspected. When I drove the car it hadn't move in 7 months

My X308 was sitting for a year and a half on almost 92,000. I immediately took the car to Detroit. 1,200 flat miles round trip. Changed the oil and let her sit for a week.
Had a family emergency to attend in Memphis three weeks after that. Drove her 2,300 miles round trip through valleys and mountains at night and in the rain. (Took about 20 hours to get there. About 16 hours drive time.) All I had to do was change the wiper blade along the way and add anti-freeze on the return trip.
The car is an absolute machine at almost 97,000 miles.

Check the steering rack for leaks, specifically check if power steering fluid is leaking into the rubber bellows. They're notorious for leaking, mine was leaking on both sides. I think refurbished ones are available, and it's not too hard to swap the rack. There's a French specialist for Jaguar parts, new, used and refurbished, I think it's Barras or something. Definitely worth checking all sources for parts, including rockauto etc.

I had the (cheaper) Jaguar version of this car and it was a money-pit. I'm in the UK and the suspension bushes were £600. The electrics were terrible and the car just 'cut out' when going round sharp left corners meaning no brakes and no power steering. It was sheer joy to drive on the rare occasions that it didn't fail, but it was so unreliable that I scrapped it within six months. There are so many things that go wrong with these cars that it's just not worth bothering unless you can afford a nearly new model. Even then, be cautious.

I recently bought the Cheapest Daimler Super V8, 00 Build. 259000 KM
Main reason the Car was like more than half priced than normal , was minor side damage.
Jaguar AJ-V8 engine, build after 98 are pretty much Bullet Proof.
Rust can be a small problem
First U need to find a Good Garage , with love for the Brand, with reasonable Prices!
Since I own it , I had a few things done.
2 rust spots welded underneath
new brake tubes ,and attachments MOT
2 new front stabilizers
new ESP Sensor
Changed multi belt, original Jaguar was still OK , but made some sound.
8 new spark-plugs , and bobbin coil.
So I saved over 4000$, because I bought the Cheapest, and for less than 4500$, I have a fully working MOT proof Car.
She drives like a Floating Cashmere Carpet, powered by a Jaguar engineered , FORD build Muscle Car Engine !
This XJ-40 got less rust , than my later build X308, I am impressed.
Also the Interior , good find !

Don’t get into the self levelling suspension because it will eat up two check books. I know because I have been there done that on a similar car. Never again. You can buy a suspension kit that takes its place but again , not cheap.
Thankfully this car has already been converted. Seems that they never work right on the self leveling suspension

I wouldn't mess with it. Change the plugs and wash it. Top off the oils. Throwing good money after bad. Mileage is to high. Bottom end repaint to expensive. It will never be a classic. Just throw some fuel in it and enjoy the ride. If you can't afford a jag when they new you can't afford one when they old is the saying. Not knocking you video or channel. Keep your money in your pocket.
