It's so refreshing to see a UA-camr that is actually passionate about what they do and not just in it for the £ That jag though, an absolute steal at £500
Look I can’t lie, I would love to make a bit more money than I do off it but I’d never review a car I didn’t feel people might be interested in to make a few quid or review a product I didn’t believe in. I’ve actually turned stuff down including sponsorships because I’ve felt it isn’t right. End of the day idriveaclassic is all my own creation and I’d rather grow it slowly and make money slower and do what I want and what I feel is right than slapdash my way through and lose sight of what I want in pursuit of cash x
@@idriveaclassic
You're the girl in the video ? Or friend of. You have a cameraman yeah:) I love older cars, the new ones are cheap and slave computers,
I owned a 1988 XJ40 (American spec) for a dozen years. It was a wonderful car, very, very RELIABLE, comfortable and good fuel economy.
Me and my ex' had a 3.6 sovereign auto, same colour, Westminster Blue, I loved it, but rarely got over 20mpg... A beast of a car. Great review again!
Hub nut style.. No head lining! Quality motor, love the old xj's. British heritage at its best! Good luck with the resto xxx
Haha yeah this and there was the bluebird too 😂
This has to be my favourite of Steph's vids so far. Concourse or not, this is one cool car.
Aw thanks Alan
Yeah , driving to petrol stn to the garage..to the BP stn to the garage again , then on to fill her up ... waiting for the AA ....on to fill it up again
@@bostavely204 jags are quite good on petrol i know because I got one
While I was watching, I was reminded of the advertising slogan Jag used. "Grace, Space, Pace" were the goals for every saloon the company made. One piece of trivia for you: this model was designed while BL owned the company. The engineers at Jaguar absolutely did not want it saddled with the ubiquitous Rover V8, so purposely designed the engine bay with no way to shoehorn a V8 under the bonnet. When the V12 was added to the range, a lot of work went in to making it fit. There is a way to improve the fuel economy. First, a different ZF transmission with overdrive could be fitted. The other option is an external overdrive, such as is made by GearVenders. Great review of a gorgeous car, Steph. Kudos to you. Kudos to Callum for preserving such a wonderful motorcar.
Just discovered Steph, watched this and subscribed. I had a Moroccan red 3.2 gold in the mid 2000’s I loved it! Bought with 98k immaculate, 2 years and 30k later I sold her :(
Fast, smooth, cool, and reliable (all the things I’m not:) great review of a great motor!!
A friend inherited his mom's new Jaguar XJ. (While filling it up at the gas station his mom had tripped, banged her head on a pipe, and died.) The Jag arrived at my friend's home by transport. Inside the car were her "old lady things" such as embroidered pillows, driving glasses, her knitted tissue holder, and upon seeing these items he burst into tears. While he was collecting himself I cleared out the Jag's interior. I told him to jump in, and I drove it out and into the countryside. Such a beautiful car to drive, it was close to perfection, and we also had a full tank of gas thanks to mom.
What a true enthusiast is Callum ! I love them Jags - my dad had a 2.9 one and we had to keep a spare ECU in the house as the damp would get into it when it rained ! A half day on the radiator in the house and the ECU was ready to go - vicious circle ! You are very knowledgeable Steph - Love your vids !
Aww thank you so much! X
A Jaguar saloon is a gorgeous car. I still miss a late 1990's XJR that I parted with some years ago. It drank petrol like nobodys business, but it combines power, comfort and style, in a way that many other cars don't.
I just love your enthusiasm for these older cars! Keep up the good work...
Lovely car, I've always liked the shape of these, they have a great presence on the roads and much cooler looking than later jags. 😊
Had one in the early 90’s. Absolutely loved it! Thanks for the memories!
You’re great Steph. Your knowledge is encyclopaedic and your enthusiasm is infectious. Pete 🇬🇧
Love this real-world insight as to an owner's perspective. One HELL of a machine you're driving my friend; such fun watching you enjoy it!
Love the Jag!! Great looking inside and out!! Thank you for the video!!
This channel is an absolute gem, really look forward to every new video. Thank you for putting all the effort in.
Love the Jag! This seems like a fundamentally really good example that’s just ready for some of the interior trim to be refreshed. Great to see it being used and enjoyed - there are so many that haven’t survived!
Thanks James!!!
THANK YOU STEPH!!! Just bought one of these recently and a FANTASTIC CAR!!!! It's a privledge to own it after waiting 30 years.
Watching the video, as a Jag owner, I noticed all the usual issues with the car of that age (even the ones you didn't point out) - I'm not surprised to see the headlining gone lol! Then we hear Callum, and we realised this Jag has bewitched him! They do that! Steph, you can go on about how expensive parts and servicing is, but when a Jaguar has you in her claws, you'll find the money, you'll sell a kidney or something!
Another lovely video, thank you!
I love it; I have one - a 1990 model. Its ride is beautiful and it provides effortless long distance travel. The cost of running it is not as high as people might think. Mine is a 4L version and it uses the same amount of fuel as a large 4WD. The ride and quietness on a long distance run makes this more than acceptable
I remember seeing one of these at night. All I saw was its lights and I said "Was that a Jaguar XJ?!" A few days later I saw it outside a coffee shop and it was a creamy white with a beige interior but it was a Daimler (I know they're really the same car).
A few years ago I had a 1988 XJ40 sovereign, the Sovereign had the big rectangular headlights and all the other models has the round ones. Mine had the Citroen suspension, but only at the rear. It gave a real 'magic carpet' ride, and the car almost drove itself. Still my wife's favourite car, but it was a money pit.
Listening to the owner reminds me why I like Jags so much. Right down to the catching your reflection thing.
If you find one that's good underneath - i.e. not rotten, the only real high cost is the petrol. Parts are often MUCH cheaper than the equivellent German car brands. Get a rotten one of course and you'll be spending a fortune on welding at every MOT.
It was such a wonderful experience to drive
I bought some cool wheel trims on my '57 Chevy Lacetti (Daewoo) There was nothing like it on the streets.. Giugaro styling.. Catching my reflection was awesome. It was nothing to do with Ego (honest) It was more about...The wedge and the trims..(the fizz!)
It’s wearing it’s age with beautiful dignity. I doubt many modern vehicles will still be on the road at that age which is testament to it’s engineering. I’d love to own a vehicle like that. Calum is one lucky bloke 👍
Cheers lovely!
Absolutely.
A fine example and a great video as usual Steph.
Hi Steph another good vlog nice to see a work in progress classic great cars jaguars keep the vlogs coming 👍👍
Beautiful car! I have a 97 XJ. It rides unbelievably smoothly and can handle anything with grace.
Glad to see this Jaaaggg on the road still. Best wishes for the restoration
Great job Steph love jags keep up the good work x
Cheers Martin x
Hi Steph , love your reviews & your style ... Callum , what a legend !
Very entertaining .... perhaps you pair should make more videos .... the Holly & Philip of the classic motor world 😎
i love the way, how your are looking at cars. so honest (& practical) reviews.
in 202 I want (if possible) to come to britain, to get a morris minor for myself (greetings from germany: & excuse my grammar) ANY advice, how to start with that?
in 2021 I want (if possible) to come to britain, to get a morris minor for myself (greetings from germany: & excuse my grammar) ANY advice, how to start with that?
Also must add, total respect for that particular car, a cool and interesting daily driver, a break from the boring and common audibmwmercedes that you just see everywhere these days. Drive ‘em don’t hide ‘em
Steph I thoroughly enjoyed this, I have an '88 XJ40 sovereign 3.6. This is my 3rd Jaguar, I started in the mid-'60s with a 1951MkV saloon then recently an S type 3.0 V6 and now the sovereign. I think this Jaguar is the best so far and like Callum's car, it's a rolling resto. Callum, you have a beautiful cat enjoy it mate there are no other classics like them.
I've always liked these jaaaaaaaaags. They remind me of Arthur Daley 😁 he had quite a few in Minder.
Oh god yeah!
i remember that series, i reckon they could have got away with calling it "arthur daley " into europe !
Love these, one of my favourites. Shame people can’t be nicer, we all have different tastes
Some people on UA-cam leave vile comments. That’s the magic of anonymity
As always, your enthusiasm is EVERYTHING! Thanks for your perspective and expertise.
"Long journey"; oh, darling *bless*. "100 miles is a long way."
I owned a 1990 jaguar sovereign back in 1993. When I pick it up and was driving home, it felt like I had won the football pools. Amazingly quite and comfortable, especially when comparing it to other cars back in the day. Loved the warning lights check when you put the keys in (you didn't really show that) and also loved the dashboard gauges set into the wood surround. As said, the car was great on the open road. That's where it wanted to be. Just felt a big car when trying to park in tight spaces and multistorey car parks were almost a no go. I only kept it for a year as I sold it to buy a house, but I will remember my xj40 experience forever. Only just found your channel, and i really enjoy watching your videos, and have now subscribed. Keep up the good work.
I love these so much. Such a bastion of classic motoring. My uncle had a couple of these. Superb video of a truly lovely car
I had one back in the mid eighties but mine was the 4.2 Daimler version. Was a lovely car , I remember you could watch the fuel gauge go down when you floored it! You needed twin tanks. I enjoyed your review of it and bought back a lot of memories thanks keep them coming
Aw thanks Paul x
Great video as always and a beautiful car. I’ve always liked this model.
Cheers Andrew x
I always loved Jaguars I owned a 1966 Mark 10 which was just luxurious it got around 16 to 17 mpg straight six 4.2 litter with triple SU Carbs it was replaced by the 420G one feature I really liked was it has free wheeling hubs which certainly helped with the cost of fuel happy days back then and actually it was easy to work on so kudos to the owner keep driving and enjoying it and do what you can to maintain her great video loved it
Great video Steph, that's a lovely car! 😍 My Dad has a 1991 XJ40 XJR, his has square lights and is red and also a work in progress restoration.
This car is a real survivor. Great video. I'm so pleased Calum still has it and still loves it. Glad you enjoyed it too.
THANK YOU ROBIN
Is he the p6 owner ?
That's beautiful, love the design it's absolutely timeless!
Had 1 of these cars 4.0 sovereign loved it great video
Beautiful jaguar. Love the styling, Ive always wanted a XJ8L
Beautiful cars aren’t they ❤️
@@idriveaclassic absolutely beautiful. They don't make them like they use to. 🚙
Great video! The day I bought my XJ40 was one of the proudest moments of my life because it was a lifelong wish being granted true. As I drove it home, I pulled up to a junction next to a van full of burly looking blokes and when they noticed the jag, they all grinned, pointed, waved and gave the thumbs up. It was at that moment I knew that Jag ownership was something a bit special!
Yes, they're smooth, comfortable, luxurious, and go like shit off a shovel, but it almost feels like missing the point to discuss the driving dynamics of a car like a Jag XJ6. It's the attention, the status, the image, and quite simply that feeling of being the absolute dog's bollocks that a car like this gives you that justifies every single penny! To quote the old XJ40 advert, "What else are dreams for, if not to come true?"
I saw it when i was 12yrs old. I bought a beat up car when i turned 28. For 6 years i drove only 30k km cos i was trying to solve numerous problems.
Sold it of to the dealer and went to car enthusiast who repaired the wire harness and numerous other things.
And guess what, i bought her back 2 years later. And have continued the restoration but its do sweet now.
What are dreams for if not to come true. The blood sweat and tears that came in between were worth it
Love the video I love Jags. I would love a classic car and these video are slowly giving me the confidence to as I have no mechanical no how.
Great video as always love seeing other people with love for the older cars/classics love the xj's was chuffed in the same xj as that ( not the same one as in the video but the same model xj) when i was young lad it was a red one they are great cars Anyway again loved the video as always love seeing classic cars kept on the road so much nicer than newer cars there are some newer cars i do like but as a rule most new cars look the same as each other but anyway continue making and sharing your videos Stay safe and well Godbless to you, myself and all the other good decent people
By the way I always enjoy your series more than "Top Gear" because your videos are very practical and informative. Thank you.
what lovely car always nice 2 see you updating video talking about classic motors and happy christmas and new year
Hi Stephen I don’t disclose my dating status on videos sorry. Don’t think it’s relevant :)
I love the way her smile grows wider the longer she's in the XJ. They have a habit of doing that.
This was cool - thanks fir the post
A well sorted XJ6 S2 is a thing to behold if you ever get the chance, I got mine many years ago and will not easily be parted from it. Love the review.
Great video and thumbs up to the owner for keeping this on the road. I love the XJ40, would be the one to buy if and when a Jag comes my way one day.
Fingers crossed x
Owned a couple of these when they were current - my first was a 2.9 litre - lovely car but totally gutless. I later had a Gold too - nice cars but I still prefer the series 3 that I had before these. Great vid thanks
I LOVE Callum! Great video all round..... XJ40 all the way
Lovely video, beautiful car.
Well done Callum - wonderful car!
Beautiful car and excellent blogg.
Those digital gadgets are even more impressive when you consider this car was launched in 1986.
What a lovely good-natured review. Your enthusiasm shines through. The owner is right though, the XJ40s are the 'unloved Jags', which why they are such a bargain. I saw a review recently of a young man who had inherited his father's XJ12 Series 1. He and his co-presenter were just making loads of snide remarks about the lack of central locking and cup holders, but only mentioning as an aside that the XJ12 was the fastest saloon car in the world at the time. Judging old cars by today's standards is just idiotic, but you have shown how to appreciate a car for how it is today. Well done you
The buttons are called the VCM = vehicle condition monitor.
I worked on the XJ-40 from launch at a main dealer franchise, it was introduced to soon, we had to do pages of enhancements, practically rebuild the car.
Rear Ride level shocks were always leaking, causing knocking or bouncing, we use to revert back to standard shocks and do away with the hydraulic pipework.
Accumulator sphere for the brakes leaked and lost preasure including valve block problems. Loads of fault codes problems.
Head gasket leaked across the cylinders filing the bores with water, also leaked oil, well the hole car had issues really.
By the end of the run of the model they got it right with face lifts, twas a nice car to drive though.
It was in the early days of computer diagnostics, a pain in the ass. XJ40 was it's code name.
The wood is a veneer. Very exspensive to run..
Very nice cars. I bought one for my 40th birthday years ago. A 'J' reg XJ40 3.2 Sovereign, the one with the square headlights. It was similar to this one, looking at it, the only difference was probably had fully adjustable electric seats in the front and reading lights in the back pillars. It was lovely to drive but I remember, even back then, it cost from memory, about £70 to fill up up (would have been about 15 years ago) I did 'kill it' half way through my ownership when the head went and it cost £1500 to get it repaired.
The J gate was awesome - stick it into '2' and you could easily get it up 60 without too much of revving the backside off it (maybe that's how I ended up killing it!)
What a present that was 😍
Great video Steph,Jax XJ's are pimpin, would love to make a lowrider out of 1
Well done Steph ;-) Glad to see your subs going up. How dare anyone say anything bad about British Leyland, especially those still on the road and in every day use.
Hahaha thank you
Another great video. Love Jags. Have a Series 3 myself. So disappointed about the negative comments on the Marina. They are not classic car enthusiasts.
It disappointed me to see people be so aggressively negative about a car I explained during the video was a close friends car and one which meant so much to me. Took it quite personally. I need to get a grip and stop loving cars so much 😂😂😂😂
@@idriveaclassic If anyone needs to get a grip, it's those who post hate comments over a simple car. It's your love of cars that provides us with a great channel. Just keep going as you are. 👍
@@A1DJPaul Yes, a car that has survived nearly half a century can't be that bad.
Wheeler Dealers did a good mini-resto on a £1K one of those a few years back... same colour.
Nice cars, my uncle had an one when they came out as a change from Mercs..
My dad had a 3.2 XJ6! I think his was a J-reg, in 'Oyster' (a kind of champagne gold metallic). He traded it in for an S-reg 4.0 XJ8 in dark blue metallic with cream interior, which seemed to be *the* colour combination for them back in the day.
‘Its 1972, it’s chaos at British Leyland’ wasn’t it always chaos at bl? 😆 Great video Steph, good luck with the rest of the videos!
BL-the pungent, unflushable log that smeared jaguar for an uncomfortably long period.
They regained their dignity under Ford, even the x type was a decent car despite the "its a mondeo" jokes.
Pity they decided to regain the unreliability stigma with the God-awful ingenium diesel unit.
Ps I'm a serial jag owner so I'm allowed to be mean about them occasionally 😉
Lovely car thanks Steph...if on can do the repair work oneself then it should not be a problem
Cheers Martin x
Great review again.. I drove an M plate LWB version in same doom blue colour for few months was great drive... as you said this is work in progress be great if you could revisit later with the owner to show what he’s done like sorted gremlins replaced headliner etc
I’ll do my best :)
This is one I've always wanted to get behind the wheel of a Jag. I've read that they tend to be somewhat sluggish as far as acceleration goes, but I don't care. I'm drawn to heavier luxury cars, and this looks right up my alley. Thank you also for that start-up. I love to hear a good start-up. That engine sounds powerful! Lovely vehicle. You said it: I would definitely expect an XJ6 to handle very "plodgy", heavy, and slow. Now you have me looking through the used car ads. By the way, I told you I've committed to watching all of your videos, liking, and commenting, as well as the ads and I'm sticking to that commitment! Great video!
there great cars it be good to see this jag again when the work is done i love this car
Thanks!
Nice video ás always. This One í know well
Í have Owned 3 of them 82.whire 93 burgundy 96 British racing green. Loved all of them Very reliable
Excellent video. I actually prefer the Jaguar over the RR. Looks-wise, and performance-wise. I am surprised at no glove box!
Surely it could have been designed to accommodate both.
I was given a '90 VDP after a friend's renter went into his barn, grabbed the car and put it in a ditch a few days later. Black with the doeskin/tan interior. Had to replace the vapor canister, vacuum lines, air dam, core support stamped metal, radiator, AC condenser, and a full brake job. It then flew through inspection- I've had it 7 years, done some upgrades to it (using later XJ40, X300-308 pieces) and getting ready to take it across the US to my new home on the opposite coast in the Carolinas
These older Jaguars are very nice looking. Would love to own one one day.
Me too. It’s just cost!
Its a Jaaaaaggg!! Great Video Steph 😃
Cheers Steve!
Gorgeous old jag, definitely worth saving. I would love to see it fully restored but I also admire that its being enjoyed daily (and I'm a tiny but smug that my Rover 800 is in slightly better condition). Best of luck to the owner
This is always the first car that pops into my head when i hear the word Jag!
Thinking about it, same.
i agree with the owner ,its what you feel when you drive a jag .....i wanted one since i was a kid and i finally got one ,i know its worth nothing on paper but to me its worth everthing ,ive had two bmw and put together they dont come close to my jag,i love your channel.thank you
I have this model 😊 I bought it as a daily driver then parked it to keep as a resto back to show room. The best car I’ve ever driven! Like driving a sofa around, smooth, comfortable and will go if you put your foot down. Mine has a sagging headliner 😆
I had a business from 2004 to 2008 buying and selling xj40’s and Range Rover classics and I ran an L reg xj40 3.2 spot as my daily driver and loved it .
I do have to say though that the xj40 drives no better than the rover 800 , Ford Granada/ Scorpio or Vauxhall Carlton / omega 6 cylinder engines coupled up to automatic gearboxes. That said there’s nothing quite like walking up to your Jag in a busy car park knowing that your turning heads .
I do love some of your terminology, this weeks favourite was 'bank vault mode' , makes them fun and entertaining. Nice car, nice video.
I feel like the more videos I do, the more I just let the real me out 😂😂😂😂😂
@@idriveaclassic in which case be yourself more ! Brilliant !
Was actually sitting on an XJ40 before settling on an XK8, great video btw
what a fantastic car and glad to see it been used every day and enjoyed.
Hi I owned a yellow 4.2 jaguar Daimler sovereign think it was a 1982 model. l enjoyed the car , it had twin petrol tanks and it needed them, boy that car could drink fuel 😱
Ooohhhh yellow!
Ha! The front seat belt receptacles on my 1994 Jaguar XJ6 look EXACTLY the same with the outer plastic broken off and the inner workings exposed.
This XJ40 is in much better condition than my 4.0L car but I enjoy driving my car anyway. I have never heard of a XJ6 "Gold" model. This must have been a UK market only thing.
I have only envy for the owner getting to drive this car around Europe like he describes.
I love this car, I had it back in 2014 in Italy, I love it. But when you use it you don't know if you are able to back home driving or on a recovery truck :D !!!!
Good informative review 👍
They were the days. So many memories.x
Hot off the press. ;) New spectacles I see. I've always liked those XJ40's, not sure if I'd lust to own one. I miss that noise that cars used to do when you removed the keys from the ignition. Callum was excellent. Lovely car, great to see its been saved and is being enjoyed by the owner. A pleasure.
Hahahaha well spotted! I sometimes wear these but the other ones are my favourite. These are my ‘car glasses’ x
'Grace, Pace and Space', what a beautiful motor car. But that MPG is a bit of an eye waterer! Many thanks Steph.
Cheers mike!
Great review.
Callum made me laugh, too.
Excellent video quite enjoyable style presentation as well. I have always loved these style of Jag very classy and timeless. Many times people are caught up associating shiny and all that with condition. Often they then get stuck with a vehicle which someone has simply taken a few bobble and covered over issues. I personally enjoy driven condition cars like this as someone is actually enjoying using it and keeping it up as they go. It's too bad over across the pond parts are much harder and pricier to acquire on British, German or Italian cars. Often repairs that are no difficult to perform than on a domestic are flat turned away or drastically increased labor for no reason.
Great video! I also have a "semi-daily-driver" XJ40, a 1987 3.6. Car is amazing and very addictive. Unless you've driven one you won't know how great a car it is. So safe, powerful, stable, such presence on the road, and so so supremely comfortable. It even makes Italian roads bearable ;-) ;-)
First time I've watched your channel, and throughly enjoyed your commentry. I plan on buying a XJ40 here in Thailand. Any classic car in Thailand is at least twice the price it costs in the UK. Petrol here is about 70p a litre!! 😲👍👍
Big car, more wood and chrome the better, jag xj from that era is such a lovely car.
Great video, although a little surprising. I have owned my XJ40 for 20 years and this is the first time I have watched a critique of this car that actually took an objective view of it's merits. I think Mr Clarkson and Co often used to snipe at this car because it wasn't "cool". Anything less than a Veron isn't cool to them.
The fact is, looked after these cars are pretty reliable and quite cheap to maintain if you use an independent garage. The engine is bullet proof. Obviously as these cars are cracking on in years it pays to shop around if you are buying one and get some advice. As for being cool, well judging by the looks and comments I get when driving it, it is proper gangster!!
