I look beyond the almost rotten vegetables and see the potential. I appreciate your comment. That is why I get into the vegetables within 2 days to get them preserved in a way that will help them to last longer. This was something we did on the farm my entire childhood. We pulled all the vegies from the garden as they ripened and when the plants had done all they could, we pulled the green ones off and made sustainable food out of them. I remember fried green tomatoes and chow chow so clearly and how good they were. Those were made from the green tomatoes that were left on the plants after the plants died.
We got a GIANT cabbage last time, too. I’m still slicing pieces off of it and using it. Last night, I cooked some with sausage, which is my usual go-to. And we’d gotten a bag of beautiful fresh broccoli and I cooked some of that too. As for blueberries, I always make cobblers - especially if there is a covered dish dinner to go to. In our area, we have two food truck distributions a month. We don’t get as much at a time as we used to, but with only two of us in our 70’s, we don’t eat that much. Like you, I give what we won’t use to another elderly couple.
Cabbage hot dish Cabbage , cubed potatoes, hamburger, cream of mushroom soup, pepper, when it's done we throw cheddar cheese on top. It is so good I don't even go by a recipe I just throw it all together in a covered pan and toss in the oven. I do precook the hamburger.

Any responsible adult will have a stockpile of food in their home. That is not hoarding. That is simply recognizing that our distribution system is a very fragile thing. If you do not store some food over and above your current needs, you are very foolish and will become a huge burden on those around you just when society most needs you to take care of yourself for a while. If she has extra, she is well advised to can or dehydrate a portion for long term storage. In fact, if you do not have some extra food, I urge you to go to your pantry and concentrate on fixing that situation, so unforeseen events don't force you to become a danger to your neighbors.
I doubt anyone is going without because she goes to a food bank. If they didn’t have enough they wouldn’t give each person so much. Your comment makes no sense.

I encourage you to call around to your local churches and ask about food banks. In my location, there are two of them that I go to and this is where I get the food. Everyone in our area is encouraged to go if they feel that they are struggling.
@@justcallmesuzzie Most people won't go to food banks if they feel they can work and pay for their groceries. They sacrafice for the disabled and those who have no one or any income. Food banks are struggling too now because of the economy.☹
