That thing MOVES. It's kind of a special treat when you come across a 400+HP Speed3. Typically, most people do basic bolt-ons and get around 300-330HP. But to see one that's been fully built and running on E85 isn't something you see often.
***** I followed a guy on Instagram before he deleted his account and he had, probably around the same HP as this one, a 2nd gen Speed3 with slicks and ran 11 seconds 1/4 mile. I'd imagine this guy's Speed3 would run high 11's or low 12's.
jeffS197 I was thinking the same thing. So much unnecessary commotion over brakes. And I doubt anyone preps their car for Matt to review for 7-10 minutes.
As a Gen1 MS3 owner since 2008, this video made me very happy. Very nicely modded car. I was thinking of doing similar power mods to what this guy did, than the RS was unveiled.
***** No, but I would do for the sticker price on the RS. Personally, I am fine with the power the K04 produces. I was only thinking of the bolt-on power increases to about 330hp max. Reason this guy spent $45k is due to having to constantly rebuild because of the high power output and probably pushes his car hard regularly.
DZEMAG This is NOT a well modded car lol. For 420WHP, it has a stock clutch, stock brakes, stock wheel/ tire width, stock catback, and a STOCK INTERCOOLER. Wat. Undoubtably fun to drive, but not necessarily a nicely modded car.
Caleb Marshall Thanks for your comment, but if you check out my wheel well page, you will see all the other mods that are on my car that weren't mentioned in the review. I am running a larger top mount intercooler which is covered by the oem engine cover and as far as the suspension and handling goes, I am running Ksport coilovers as well as BFG KDW tires that are wider than stock. And for the catback, there aren't any real hp gains to be made with an after market system besides being overly loud.
I've always wondered Matt, how do the drivers react after the take? Adrenaline pumped? Happy to get their car back? Ever been berated or praised for pushing the limits?
Personal experience, it's just cool to get the thoughts from someone who's opinion you respect like Matt's on your car. Especially since it is his first time seeing and driving it and he can give you a good unbiased opinion based upon the number of cars he drivers per year as an automotive journalist.
fortheloveofcake93 I've always wanted to see Matt push the cars a little harder. I know it's a public road and all, but I've never really seen him drive more than 6/10 or 7/10 in his one take videos.
Iain Murray Well, he redlined this car like six times in this video lol, floored it, hopped around a bit on the road, I'd say he pushed it far enough. He shouldn't go Stig mode, since it isn't his car. At least I wouldn't want him to go 10/10 or even 9/10 in my car lol. Still great videos
I was meaning through the corners, he seems quite tame, even more so in his other one takes. It was fast enough to be entertaining, but I've always wanted to see Matt push the cars a little harder. I personally would like to see if he could drive my car faster than me, especially if it's only for a 10 min session. Matt's a great guy though and I rarely miss his uploads.
It doesn't torque steer as much because of the power band. The 3076 shines up top, where you don't typically get torque steer. Whereas, the Speed in the video before had a BNR, which has a lot more torque down low in the RPM range - more torque steer.
Matt i have to say well done for doing something different with reviewing cars. It is good to see that you give feed back over peoples cars that have been modified to their liking. The fact that your honest makes the reviews more interesting. Some of the cars that you have reviewed clearly show that there are many car enthusiast in your community. I have a 2007 Mazda 6 MPS. I am planning to make some more modifications to it over the next couple of months. Seeing your insight to each and every car you review makes my choice with modifying my car easier. I want my car to have balance with enough power to make it move. I would like to see a review on the Mazda Speed 6 with some mods. I know that you are a fan of the car, any ways keep up the reviews. Its good to see someone doing something different.
MrGovenator1 The owner's a dumbass. He had the engine built, then kept everything else stock. Of course it's a money pit, the stock parts weren't meant for 400+ HP. I mean it's obvious he's an idiot, he's still running stock brakes with that power and is too cheap to replace a sensor to get TC and ABS working again.
firehawkws7 He's only had to replace turbos then get the engine built for power. You act like he's replacing transmissions left and right and putting in stock clutches weekly.
***** if he bought it new, it would have been $25kish, so that could be the case as well. Also, possible to spend more than $5k on three turbos if you have someone else do the work and stuff. Still seems kinda high though. Oh, he has different tires as well, hard to say what that cost him for sure, but that contributed, I assure you. I wore out the stock potenzas on mine when I had it in 30k miles, lol.
This is one of the best One Takes yet. Not just the car choice, but the chemistry between the host/driver with the passager/owner. The guy has a bad ass car and he is really humble about it, get thoes brakes though!
mazda has really come into its own since the partnership with Ford ended. All of their cars since 2014 and later are very refined with great interiors and great handling. the only thing they're missing is a car that makes big power. They have an RX concept but who knows if that will ever make production. I personally am hoping for a next gen speed3 using the engine from the new CX-9. So much potential in that engine especially with the great chassis of the 3rd gen Mazda 3. The new speed3 can potentially obliterate Ford focus ST/RS, WRX/STI, GTI/R, etc.
That guy was terrified the entire time. Hell, I was terrified just watching. Every time you got boost and that thing took off I thought you were going to torque steer off a cliff.
I have an 08.5 MS3 that I bought new and while I'm nowhere near 420 WHP, I'm also nowhere near 45k, including the original purchase price. I'm at 130k and have had essentially ZERO issues other than the basic maint. items (brakes, tires, oil, etc). Original Turbo and clutch too!
Same here. I only have 80k on my 09 MS3, but in the 5 years I have had it the only non maintenance thing I've had to replace was the gas cap which somehow got cross threaded on and stuck.
I have a few basic bolt on mods: Hypertech Tuner, Mazdaspeed CAI, RSB, JBarone Short Shifter. Appearance wise: HID's (sport, not GT) and yellow film over the fog lights, side moldings removed, tinted windows Debaged and the Mazda emblems are both plastidiped. Used to have some OEM RX8 wheels painted black, but I sold those and I'm back on my stock wheels. That's about it.
Ok so its likely this guy had bad luck I thought these were decently realiable if you didn't go crazy with the power. I would only do a stage 1 or stage 2 Cobb tune if I was to mess with it but being as the car would be a daily it might just stay stock
+The Strength Doc Ive seen them on 600-700 whp. the amount of power you can get out of it these days is insane. Honestly prefer the 2nd gen speed especially with body mods.
I have a few questions. How is the rust? Yeah I know you guys are in Cali, but if you ever come to the east coast you'll see 5yo Mazdas that are crumbling apart, so I wouldn't even be surprised if they rusted in less-humid climate just by looking at it :o Have you had issues with carbon deposits that are inherent to DI, especially with a turbo? Especially considering your higher than stock boost and E85. The Ksport coilovers are a bit disappointing, though. There are plenty of better quality name brand options for the MS3.
This car is ready. I agree good brakes are important but when you are building and maintaining a car like that for daily driving... You got my respect nice wagon.
Lol, when Matt said it's a 1st gen, not the ugly one. I love the 2nd gen Speed3. This one looks more basic, so it's easier to look good. When you go over the top, people will either love it or hate it. But the 2nd gen ones look dope to me, hood scoop and all. And yea I heard these cars have the most torque steer. I've seen many crazy fast ones tho.
There's mixed reaction to these one take videos but from what Matt says it seems it's mostly positive which I'm happy about... With these videos, the spectrum of cars that can be reviewed/shown/analysed/publicised is increased infinitely; I think this was mentioned on video at some point but let's not forget it. Reviewing new cars is great and we all want to see the most anticipated new releases on video, but this is great too, it's something different that we wouldn't otherwise see. Of course, lots of people think what I've just said, but I wanted to say it too.
Kyle: I would recommend some Porterfield R4s pads (Amazing daily, aggressive pads), stop-tech SS lines, and maybe some Motul fluid. That's the best you can do with stock calipers.
Here's the fun thing about these one takes: a totally unscripted and raw review of cars in a snapshot in time. Modified in ways that make sense in 2015, for our purpose. It will be wild to watch these in 20 years and see how times and preferences have changed.
I really enjoyed this 1take. The guy seemed so laid back about everything and that's a really nicely done mazdaspeed3, it'd give a lot of wrxs a run for their money. Plus i like that it 170k on the clock meaning its been driven (which I don't feel like its alot, but I guess getting to drive mostly new cars all the time and the ones you own having little miles other than the lexus I can see why matt reacted the way he did
I had a 2009 MP3 with a few bolt-ons and a crap OTS tune. It only had like 283hp and was still so fun to drive in the canyons. Thing felt like a rocket. In this day in age of fast but soulless EV's, I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. Wish I never sold mine!
You must be fuckin stupid to think that a custom alignment can't alter those characteristics... Stick to firestone or wheelworks and the stock alignment specs dumbass
@@nissantech8857 camber and toe settings alter a cars turn in and coming out of a corner also under accel or decel. Not to also mention ride stiffness on front and rear
Oh hell yeah finally a MS3!!! Ever since my buddy had one for a few years and light bolt-on parts I was wondering why no one really tuned em XD Moving to a Focus ST I still like the power of the MS3 more, just doesn't handle as well
I really wish Mazda had put this engine in the RX8. That much power is certainly a hoot, but even more so when driving the rear wheels, leaving the fronts to simply steer and brake.
Love my 2007 speed 3, I just hit 60k as the second owner this month. Only thing ive replaced is the thermostat. I'm going to do a bunch of maintenance soon with plugs, shocks and tires but so far its been flawless for me. I do notice now I get a little smoke on startup in the morning after the car sits over night, turbo seals? Anyone have any info on that?
With these films you are building a solid database of car reviews. Comparing heavily modified vs near stock and FWD vs RWD vs AWD. You are sitting on a gold mine Trebek.
Matt - I think the torque steer is less because of the spool characteristic of the larger turbo. Higher in the revs before the power comes.. the gear just unfolds and you're on to the next.. weeeee!
#TheSmokingTire, you MUST do a Toyota MR-S with the Celica's 2ZZGE engine! It's a poorman's Lotus Elise with more comfort at half the price! Please get a shoutout to someone in the area and review it! TRUST me, you will LOVE it!
when he’s talking about it struggling to get traction when he adds boost what he’s feeling is the front tires pulling so hard it actually ends up dragging the rear tires at points
BJ, upgraded injectors for this platform don't exist, aside from the single set that was made for huge cost and used only briefly due to gains being minimal at best.
'Have you done anything to the brakes?' 'No.' There's quite a few of these One Takes where that dialogue happens. What is the point in adding huge power if you can't use it? A car can't be truly fast unless it has brakes that can cope with it's power output. It should be the first thing you do!
These are awesome videos, if you could show some speedo/tach shots under acceleration that would be cool. Would love to see what 420 WHP looks like in this car.
The gen 1 speed3 is way nicer inside and out.. Plus the steering and gearing.. Have a large dog.. Cant think of many other sub 30k Hatch/performance wagons that will fit her like one of these. The Sti/wrx hatches are tiny, as are the Ford St's. Any suggestions? Great car and video.. If I get one ill need to modify it close to this, minus e85
There aren't too many mods needed for this car to be amazing. You need larger injectors and better spark plugs for a turbo upgrade, like the 3071r. It would be wise to have a front mounted intercooler, and aem intake, and 3in full exhaust system. Also, a good power tune is advised. In all of that, your 0-60 should be like 4 seconds flat.
nice car, i have a gen 1 with 60k on the odo... but it's been sitting since 2013. i need to toss new tires and a battery in it and get her back on the road. damn thing has been a pain in the ass tho... nice to see a road shredder like yours =)
stock wheels, what size tire on the 7" width? the last one had wider aftermarket wheels which probably contributed to the torque steer with less positive offset.
He has standard TMIC too and catback exhaust. What turbo is he running ? S3 or S4 ? Don't see how he can make 420 hp atw. My mate has an S3, upgraded TMIC, DP, E85 mix and he is running 375 hp atw on 23 psi.
swigga4O AQ Motorsports. Adam, who is the owner of the shop is the one who built the motor. He worked for Mazda as a mechanic for 7 years. Very reputable guy.
I know it's not readily available to you, but other than that, Ethanol is great. It's cheap race gas and cars gobble the shit out of it. We have reliable (70+) E at most pumps, and even though you get less mpgs, the price decrease actually makes it a bit more economical depending on price. Corn juice and injectors/tune was good for 70awhp on the LGT
2009 Mazdaspeed3 owner here. It seems like finding a stock Speed3 in my area(Socal near Cobb Tuning) is like looking for a unicorn. So far I have got 62,000 miles of smiles with no issues. Just regular maintenance, gas and lots of summer tires. The sleeper look is a big plus since it is my DD. And it is all stock and staying that way. The 2017 awd Mazdaspeed3 is tempting though...
Justin Blanco So far, the car has no major issues. There are 3 minor things like creaky dashboard trim pieces, a burn fuse for the power outlet, and a slight gear whine when in 5th gear. A co-worker has a 2008 MS3 with 270,000 miles on it so far. The 2008/2009 models in stock form are relatively trouble free.
+Justin Blanco My '07 MS3 has been very reliable for 280,000 miles. Engine is all stock, but I beefed up the suspension damping to make it handle better. Although plenty will disagree, I don't really think an MS3 needs more power than stock or would handle it very well.
VAspeed3 Good to hear your MS3 has that many trouble free miles. It seems they are really reliable if left in stock form. But I'm not sure why the same engine in the CX7 is having so many issues. Maybe it was detuned improperly for 87 octane or the auto transmission setup?
mrackelito1 You can find diesel at about 1/3 of the fuel stations in the US, and E85 is common in corn-growing regions, but quite rare in other places. There is only 1 station within 5 miles (that's a lot in LA) of my house that sells E85
mrackelito1 where I am in Pennsylvania, the closest e85 is about 70 miles away.Diesel is around every corner though because there are a lot of diesel pickups here (mostly douche bag kids)
TheSmokingTire wantsanewvehicle Oh damn, and one more thing, you have like 91 or 92 octane fuel right? We have 95 and 98 which is wierd, do we count differently and its the same or is your petrol worse? Thanks for reply
mrackelito1 92 octane in the U.S. is equivalent to 96 octane in Europe. The U.S. uses it's own rating system. Where I am the best octane around is 93, which makes the premium just about the same as in Europe.
Is it possible to get away with a catless exhaust in L.A? I have an 03 cobra with Long Tube Headers off road X and bullet mufflers, I'm wondering if I need to add high flow cats? Or if I will be ok catless if I find the right people. I am moving from NC to L.A next year. Thanks
Are you talking smog wise? If so you usually would just have to find someone to overlook it and pay a lil more, my challenger and M5 are catless and just depending on how you drive will determine if you get pulled over constantly or not haha.
Holy crap I was ear to ear smiles during the entire shoot.....well almost. Once he dropped the money pit info, my jaw dropped. I guess when you're pushing 400+ HP through a fwd car, that also is daily driven, you're bound to go through parts.

***** Tons of speed 3 and speed 6 guys do it here where i'm from. When you're in the speed community you see more than usual.
***** No clutch and no brakes? Hmmm.
jeffS197 I was thinking the same thing. So much unnecessary commotion over brakes. And I doubt anyone preps their car for Matt to review for 7-10 minutes.
One of these surprised the crap out of me one the freeway one day.
I always watch the owners faces during redlines.
As a Gen1 MS3 owner since 2008, this video made me very happy.
Very nicely modded car. I was thinking of doing similar power mods to what this guy did, than the RS was unveiled.

You can make 450+whp with like $7000 on this platform lmfao
I really enjoy these one take videos Matt. They give me something to watch while I eat lunch.
That dude has the most "meh" tone. Super chill
Maybe it's just me, but him grabbing the "oh shit" handle for the whole time makes him look nervous...
Behzad Majdizadeh Thats because their going around corners fast
Behzad Majdizadeh Well you don't have much to grab other than the handle when you're not driving and the car's going fast through corners.
maximus9401 "You think you may need bigger brakes?" "....meh"
ya super annoying. seemed to me like he didn't even want to be in the video.
Man, i love these ONE TAKE videos!
The one takes ROCK! Keep them up.
Owner holding the holy shit handle
i love how this car sounds, minimal drone and very pleasant to listen to. good change from a wide open exhaust (as much as i love them)
This is by far one of the best channel doing this type of videos. I love this :D

As soon as Matt heard he put 45000 Dollars in the car, He LOL'D hard in his head
Dude was hanging on for dear life lol! You can see him grip that shit
After watching this, I then proceeded to get in my speed3 and rip it.

i would like to see a roll race between this and a mustang gt 2015

yeah , but i want to see how much

Just bought my 2007 MPS 3 yesterday. 6 speed manual. 100,000 kms. Taking a while to get used to a big HP FWD and a heavy duty clutch....
Wish I never sold mine!
he totally put his arm up to show that he lifts, can confirm he lifts
"It's got a fresh alignment, so it oversteers more than understeers right now."
Wat?
Yeah.... Ummm
Whats off about that?
You must be fuckin stupid to think that a custom alignment can't alter those characteristics... Stick to firestone or wheelworks and the stock alignment specs dumbass
@@X11CHASE ...please enlighten me how a "custom" alignment on a fwd car will cause it to oversteer🤔
@@nissantech8857 camber and toe settings alter a cars turn in and coming out of a corner also under accel or decel. Not to also mention ride stiffness on front and rear
Oh hell yeah finally a MS3!!! Ever since my buddy had one for a few years and light bolt-on parts I was wondering why no one really tuned em XD Moving to a Focus ST I still like the power of the MS3 more, just doesn't handle as well
Surprisingly nice little mazda.
That thing looks to have some nice power.
Can you say torque steer?!? :p
Not even a Mazda fan, but this car is nuts. Don't even care it has stock brakes. This must be fun to race people in. Well done owner.
great motivation to keep going with my MS3
this chassis only needs 300-330hp to be extremely fun at everything
I like his enthusiasm
This roof view is awesome. I really think you could make it even better by setting up a "speedometer cam" and revs
He spent 45K and he still on stocked brakes?
Brakes are huge on that thing they can withstand that power.
@@victormaddox-craft5730 not on a German Autotobahn. I have a stock MPS3, and the brakes are.... jop...
With these films you are building a solid database of car reviews. Comparing heavily modified vs near stock and FWD vs RWD vs AWD. You are sitting on a gold mine Trebek.
Great series. Great just awesome.
Nice car, they are around mid teens in price in NZ.
I love the sleeper aspect!
Now need a sorted MS6
sweeeptheleg Would love to see an AWD MS3 like the 6 got
Charles T there is a guy in Greece that did the AWD conversion to his gen 1 MS3. It pretty nice
crimson25haze Mazda is doing an AWD one in 2016 :)
Still a maybe...it's isn't 100%, but it's exciting to think about!
Charles T I agree but the AWD system kinda sucks, it's FWD till the front slips, and cannot send more than 50% to the rear
Love these One Takes. This is a good example of the potential the MS3 platform has. Please get a new shift knob though haha! Also no FMIC?!
this thing is so badass
awesome video, ive yet to see a mazda 3 sedan with a turbo and that much power.
Would love to see that too. Know anyone with this setup?
I used to have a 2000 Celica gts 6 speed. My first car, lots of fun for a 16 year old. Loves the 8500rpm redline
when he’s talking about it struggling to get traction when he adds boost what he’s feeling is the front tires pulling so hard it actually ends up dragging the rear tires at points
BJ, upgraded injectors for this platform don't exist, aside from the single set that was made for huge cost and used only briefly due to gains being minimal at best.
Great vid! you don't see to many vids on the handling and actually power for a mazdaspeed3 gen one. A lot of freeway racing tho!
'Have you done anything to the brakes?' 'No.' There's quite a few of these One Takes where that dialogue happens. What is the point in adding huge power if you can't use it? A car can't be truly fast unless it has brakes that can cope with it's power output. It should be the first thing you do!
lol problem is most ppl care more about pure power than having a well rounded car
Yeah, it's crazy. Is it fun to have to brake 400 metres before a corner? Sounds a bit shit to me.
2:10 my exact thought right before he said it
Hey, Matt. You ever thought about doing one takes of Pro Touring cars?
These are awesome videos, if you could show some speedo/tach shots under acceleration that would be cool. Would love to see what 420 WHP looks like in this car.
The gen 1 speed3 is way nicer inside and out.. Plus the steering and gearing..
Have a large dog.. Cant think of many other sub 30k Hatch/performance wagons that will fit her like one of these. The Sti/wrx hatches are tiny, as are the Ford St's. Any suggestions?
Great car and video.. If I get one ill need to modify it close to this, minus e85
Shahul Usman I've got 2 golden retrievers. Theres plenty of room:)
Nice.. I have a 100lb greater Swiss mountain. Shoukd be good if you can fit a golden. I wish the Fiesta/focus St's had bigger hatches
Wait, the dogs fit with the back seats up or down?
There aren't too many mods needed for this car to be amazing. You need larger injectors and better spark plugs for a turbo upgrade, like the 3071r. It would be wise to have a front mounted intercooler, and aem intake, and 3in full exhaust system. Also, a good power tune is advised. In all of that, your 0-60 should be like 4 seconds flat.
Take it back Matt, that can't be the only G you respect.
Matt has anyone spazzed out mid-drive and asked you to step out of the drivers seat? No disrespect, honestly curious lol
+TheSmokingTire
zombiecheef only my mother.
I have that same turbo in my SRT4. They are great turbos
First thing I thought when I saw this in my reccomended was "sweet mother of torque steer! :D"
nice car, i have a gen 1 with 60k on the odo... but it's been sitting since 2013. i need to toss new tires and a battery in it and get her back on the road. damn thing has been a pain in the ass tho... nice to see a road shredder like yours =)
So when do we get to see the delorean one take?! Love the videos!
stock wheels, what size tire on the 7" width? the last one had wider aftermarket wheels which probably contributed to the torque steer with less positive offset.
I want to say I was rolling next to this guy in Burbank I've seen this car around Burbank, he barked the tires at about 25mph... lol
Would love one of these but I'm sure parkers website says these cost £490 a year to tax?
The best part about these videos is watching the owner get nervous with Matt driving
i rem i had a cwp 08.5 ms3. its was fun. Had to change the mm to shift better. but overall was a great car..miss my ms3!
Do you have a 2004 or 2005 Mazdaspeed Miata scheduled?
422Gman Wish I still had mine, the Ohlins would have charmed the pants off Matt.
Torque steering has to do with the early boost, since he swapped it with a larger turbo, the lag evens out the torque.
Hey Matt, have you ever gotten to review a is300 with a 2jz-gte swap?
What would be a good first modification for a 2003 Subaru Legacy Outback?
That was great to watch. Kick starter for dude's brakes lol!
He has standard TMIC too and catback exhaust. What turbo is he running ? S3 or S4 ? Don't see how he can make 420 hp atw. My mate has an S3, upgraded TMIC, DP, E85 mix and he is running 375 hp atw on 23 psi.
who//where/which shop in Torrance you say? I checked the wheelwell page but couldnt find info on the builder
swigga4O AQ Motorsports.
+1400VID are they reliable? thinking of getting one because it has more room for the dog lol
1st gen speed3 around 12 grand lol more like 6-9 grand
Depends on milage I just got a 10 for 12k but it has 40k miles
@@treycantu1097 3400.
they’ve depreciated more it’s been 5 years
It seems like in the US you can only buy petrol? Diesel and e85 is not common? In Sweden we got diesel and e85 in EVERY station which is pretty sweet
mrackelito1 You can find diesel at about 1/3 of the fuel stations in the US, and E85 is common in corn-growing regions, but quite rare in other places.
Hawk Ize Oh okey thanks for the answer
Really didn't hear a ton of wheel-spin, that's pretty impressive!
