Happy second anniversary to the first speedrun! Duolingo's new update is a bit controversial, so this was a good test! You can witness the real-time emotional damage this speedrun caused me...
I am not affiliated with Duo the Owl in any way. Luckily, my family remains safe and sound because I maintain my streak!!

Looking at other comments here, it seems that Duo got rid of the labels for each lesson (e.g., Objects, Past Tense 3, etc.) and the grammar tips that go with each lesson. I think that’s a terrible move. I love how it is (or was) organized the old way and I study all the grammar tips along the way. The tips are important to me. 😢
They were really important to me, too! I used to take diligent notes for each lesson... Now, they're all consolidated into the Unit Guidebook which I feel isn't as effective. Idk, I kind of hate it! 😔

@eg I used Duolingo to learn the Arabic script. This app isn’t the best at teaching languages but I was pleasantly surprised by how thorough the alphabet part in Arabic was. I did also take Arabic for a year in university, but it is such a difficult language I don’t even remember how to introduce myself at this point…
As a Romanian-American and long time subscriber, I was really surprised when the random number generator landed on Romanian. I feel like it’s definitely the forgotten romance language. Honestly though, your pronunciations were really good! The only word that was a little wonky was barbat, it’s more like burr-baat (baa like a sheep) Also, the word for beard is actually barba, so you were right about that connection!! Loved the video
As a portuguese speaker I was surprised that I could understand most of the sentences in Romanian.
The most similar language to Romanian is Italian with 77% lexical similarity (77% of the words are similar or identical).
An Italian can more or less understand spoken or written Romanian and viceversa
As a Romanian living in Romania I seriously didn’t expect it

It isn't because you're slow, it's the update. Duolingo has decided that making a long, grindy course is more important to them than making one that teaches effectively.
This redesign does make it more efficient.
Yeah it takes so long now. Before the update I felt like I was learning so much so fast and now I’m stuck on the same subject for days 🥲
@Sophie As an advanced learner... the old designed sucked for me. It was limiting and redudant and the new design is more efficient even if it's less fun. But that might also be how you use it. For me, it's more fun and I like that the learning is more efficient for remembering what I've covered. It's also more holistic. It might force us on a path, but it's the best path for learning through the app. imo. you don't have to agree. But they aren't just throwing things at the wall and hoping for the best. they have a research department.
@@matthewflowers1079 This interesting because I feel the exact opposite. Before I felt like I was regurgitating the same lessons ad nauseam, whereas now I'm making much faster progress.
@@poisonappleantiques5710 I think I went through the previous design faster than intended because I never tried to level up or do legendary on any of the lessons, I would just continue progressing as soon as the next lessons became available. I think the uncertainty of whether to keep practicing or move on was a big confusion for a lot of people, but I just didn’t care lol. The new design forces you to practice what you’ve already learned but maybe that’s a good thing
As a Romanian, I was surprised by your pronunciation. It was really good, sometimes sounded kind of Moldovan tho lol.

I have a 58-day streak on Duolingo Romanian, I started learning because of my bf (he's Romanian and his mom can't speak English so I decided to be super impressive and learn Romanian ofc) IT HAS BEEN SUCH A PAIN but this is the longest I've kept a language so far, I haven't missed a day and girl- you did more in 2 hours than I did in a month. I genuinely thought you'd have a harder time with it but i suppose i'm just a bit slow-

@@twinfettuccine the newer ver. and I did pretty good considering that I only did the first unit due to.. me not having enough braincells for another one😃
and had to study the cyrillic alphabet to get prepared and stuff sooo it was fun!
I wanted to do ukrainian but the laptop wasn’t recording🤩
so I had to do russian and got confused and, again, braincells were self-destructing theirselfs😭😭
I wasn't speedrunning but that kept on happening to me in both of my courses, I had to keep on exiting the app in order for it to work again
I like the new update besides that glitch, but until they fix it, I'd rather go back to the tree

Me (a romanian chad) watching a person who speaks American, butchering my chad balkan language and saying that it is just a combination of french and Italian with a slavic and turkish twist..
Also, when you said “Eu” is pronounced like “yo” in Spanish, i felt that, bc many of us use this in informal speech, even tho the correct form is pronounced “ieu”

In my own opinion, the new update is not very good. They had absolutely no reason to do it, it really made it weird for long-term users of Duolingo. Personally, I'm not a fan, but I am a fan of these speedruns!
I hate that we can't even see the name of the lessons. Really makes it terrible if I want to revise one.
I actually hate that the stories have now been implemented, I hate that it's linear instead of being a tree of sorts, I hate how it looks, I hate how LONG the whole thing has become, and oh and it removed like 80% of my advance in French because I had dared to try skipping all units and succeeded.
I really felt like I was getting close to finishing the dutch course but the new update somehow makes it seem longer, which is pretty annoying

I haven't seen these updates. Is it the paid version?
The reason why it is so linear now is that now EVERYTHING is mixed into the path, from practices, to stories, to brand new lessons.
Also, the reason why it is eerily similar looking to mobile games like Candy Crush is merely an attempt to make it look more fun, at least, that's what it looks like to my understanding. The new look may also just be an attempt to market it more towards mobile game players.
Yeah, for a few years now, Duolingo has been game-ifying language learning! To be fair, it's definitely worked! I've kept up a streak for over 500 days now, and I'm mostly motivated by the League and the Weekly Friend Challenges, ngl! 😅
@@twinfettuccine Yeah, the reason why Babbel fell behind was because Duolingo just looked so much more charming & approachable, not to mention its meme status. Although now, duolingo users have been announcing that they might quit & move to babbel, so this might be the start of the app's downfall.
@@twinfettuccine but that's just the thing...I DON'T like the app trying to "game-ify" a language learning app. My attention span is not short and everything doesn't have to be a game to be interesting. I absolutely can't stand the new update and everyone on their FB is ripping them to shreds. Before this update I was literally just about to upgrade to the pro version, but most definitely won't now.

I SEVERLY dislike it. 😔I feel like I've made 0 progress in my target language since updating the app. I miss the cracked eggs that were optional to review on each lesson instead of the reviews being built into the path. I feel like it's so much harder to retain information now! 😟
@@mageyplss I was a duolingo that migrated to Babbel back when it was on an old app interface and personally I found babbel easier and more integrated. I just got back to doing duolingo yesterday as of this comment and the only thing I’m kind of motivated off is the exercises.

As a Romanian, your pronunciation is way better than i expected, it's incredible and hilarious.
I personally love the new design! It's more manageable in my opinion - I do however think it's a shame that they removed the grammar tips :( They were really essential for my learning journey
I've seen that some people prefer the path because it's clearer and doesn't make you choose between two or three lessons, which is definitely easier! Some languages still have the tips, I think? It seems like the update hid things in some courses but they're still there in other courses... 🤔I'm still looking for the "stories" tab on my Japanese course, lol! 😅
@@twinfettuccine Stories will come back later from what I read on their news feed. They said they are reworking stories. I don't have my stories anymore in Spanish lessons either.

You are pronouncing the words preety well exept for băiat. The ă, â and î sounds are the hardest for foreigners. Ă it's kind of the uh in uhmmm. Â and î are the same thing, but î is put in the start and end of word while â is put in the middle of a word. Hope this helps a bit!

Romanian is actually one of the hardest languages to learn as a non-native speaker. You did a great job tho

What makes you think that? I assumed it assumed it would be pretty doable, though that comes from a native speaker. I feel like the difficulty is mostly the weirdass expressions that don't translate well into other languages but native speakers use a lot.

I really hate the new look and it also erased a lot of my work. But the worst thing of all is now it says I've completed some of the lessons I didn't complete fully and all of the stories that I had unlocked it says that I've already read them all even though I've only read 2

As a native Romanian speaker, this was so fun to see! The “â” and “î” sound the same and make the sound like the e in “eww” but not as in “bee” “tree” (closer to the top of your mouth, more like the instinctive sound). The “ă” makes a deeper uh sound like in “ugh”. “Ț” is “ts” and “ș” is “sh”. Romanian doesn’t have definite articles, so the ending of the word changes depending on if it’s masculine (-ul) or feminine (-a). A boy is “un băiat” and the boy is “băiatul,” while a girl/the girl is “o fată/fata.” There is also a neuter gender in Romanian where the noun accords with the masculine in the singular and the feminine in the plural. Overall, you did a good job!

I got ur video from 2 years ago on my recommended. The one where you try to speedrun duo. I was screaming for u to get Romanian. After i finished the video i had wanted more of this and clicked on this one. I am very pleased that i somehow guessed you would actually somehow manage to get Romanian. This video was very entertaining i feel like i subconsciously manifested for it to be what i wanted and i got romanian hahha. Do more videos like this!!

The reason it took a lot longer than the other ones is because the new path revisits old lessons as you go through, but at a harder level, so you had to do more English to Romanian exercises, while in the other speedruns, you just had to do Romanian to English most of the time.
You did absolutely great I live in moldova and I also talk this language you are amazing!

Not gonna lie, not the biggest fan of this update. Instead of having specific lessons for different things, it just feels like it's an entire lesson of stuff that doesn't really feel like it has a coherent connection. Probably not the right spot for this lol congrats on the speedrun.
No, you're definitely right! I think what Duolingo lacks the most is a clear, coherent vocab list and topic along with their lessons! I've been having so much trouble taking notes as I work on my Japanese course -- the new update threw me completely off! Things feel very disconnected and it's difficult to learn vocabulary along with the grammar they're pushing. 😔
@@twinfettuccine Yes, definitely that too. That and the tips section is so inconsistent not only between different languages but also between the app version and the computer version. Like, I feel completely lost when doing Hebrew and Greek on the phone version because there’s no tip section, but there are tips on the computer. I understand that not all courses are equally finished, but I don’t understand why there are languages with tips on the computer but not the app. Plus the update definitely doesn’t help with the tip section at all since the units aren’t really coherent anymore lol

For some languages that go "i eat apple, i eat bread" at first - it does. The language I'm learning right now has a surprisingly good course with everyday words and phrases included without the fever dream sentences, but it still lacks actual theory so that the twists like "actually you DON'T have to put the pronounce all the time!" and alldat won't be that surprising. I miss theory.

As a guy who actual speedrun portuaguse and Spanish to learn it I can say romain is really the father of all romace languages combined
7:12 Funny enough, Bărbat is related to Bearded in sister languages (like Portuguese Barbado), since guys had beards. Romanian is unique in two ways: Evolving words to mean different words (Bearded for Man), and that there are. A BUTT TON OF IRREGULAR FORMS WHEN CHANGING THEM FOR CASES.

We need options to choose between versions cause it's been a year and there's still no way i'll get used to duolingo as it is now, been using a mod to do it for a while but it's still annoying.
