    Hey buddy, I found your channel while looking for solutions to my own problem. You seem to be the most responsive person, so I’m going with you... my car: 99 CRV, 184k miles
    On my way home today, the fuel level was really low, light wasn’t on tho. When I went to pass another car, the crv fell on its face and gave some studders, but otherwise kept going. Put gas in it and when I was leaving the station, the check engine light came on.
    The car idles fine, can rev fine in park or neutral. But when I go to drive it, it studders and hesitates and kinda bogs, I have to back off the pedal to get it to go...it will still drive so far.
    My neighbors scanner says p1399, which is a very general code for misfire... I’ve already been thru the burnt valve when I got the car, that’s all fixed and she been running fine for a year now. It even passed smog with flying colors 1 week ago exactly.
    I’ve pulled the wires to check them and they aren’t the problem. It doesn’t idle rough, it doesn’t have any misfire at idle, only when I try to go. Could it be a fuel pump or filter? I changed the fuel cap recently also. Can’t imagine the o2 sensors just up and quit...
    I’m stumped, can you gimme any more ideas buddy?

    • @local701
      @local701  3 роки тому +3

      Sounds like a fuel pump to me. The gas acts as a coolant for the fuel pump. If the fuel pump is old and tired the extra heat from low fuel will send it to its doom even quicker.
      One of the classic symptoms of a bad pump is the car will start and run but you can't accelerate hard or can only slowly get 20 or 30 mph before the car falls on it's face. The pump can no longer keep up with the fuel demands and the car runs lean then misfires. (code 1399)
      A fuel pressure gauge will confirm this as you drive. I can't remember if the CRV has a fitting for one or not.
      Good luck.

      @@local701 man, I think you nailed it. Fuel pump was my first thought when it happened. It’s a 22 year old car now, my neighbors brother owned it originally and maintained it I have all the records, then my neighbors got it and they just drove it into the ground for the last 10 years, drove with the valves needing adjustment and check engine light on till it burnt a valve, that’s when I got it and did the valves after researching those codes. Joe ain’t one for maintenance, he wants to sell their Subaru rather than put tires on it, so everything except things I have replaced is either original or more than 10-15 years old...I ordered a tuneup kit for it, I’ll get me a fuel pump from autozone this week too. Thankyou thankyou for replying, I’m hitting the subscribe button soon as this long ass comment is done!

      @@local701 it’s funny you mention heat too, because since Sunday it’s been over 100 degrees here already and today was my first day back to work after the weekend. Car sat in the blazing sun all day today, at home it gets shaded most of the day. So add everything up : hot day + mostly empty tank + 80mph + 22 year old fuel pump = no bueno.
      Thanks again, I plan to hopefully pick your brain on quick struts in the next couple weeks, I want to put a 2” lift and do the quick struts at the same time. I want 235/75s on it :)
      You have a great channel, I poked around briefly tonight, I’m definitely coming here first next time.

      @@donutcrash mine DID in fact turn out to be just a spark plug wire. I did a full tune up, oil change, and even replaced the fuel pump, I think it was the #2 wire that burned out. I remember I did the wires last, kept checking at every step/replaced part, I usually do them first...
      My crv had previously burned a valve from never having been adjusted, thats how I got it from my neighbor, and that has very similar symptoms and is very common to the early crv and will throw the same code. I rebuilt the top end about 1 year before. so if you don’t find your misfire between the distributor and the plugs, gonna hafta pop the valve cover off and see how tight those bad boys are. If you have had the car for say 50-70k miles and you personally never had the valves adjusted, that’s not good, it needs to be done. If you don’t find the misfire before/at the plugs, and the valves are really tight, you gotta pull the head and check the actual valves, I think my burnt valve was the exhaust for #2, I did em all while I was in there right...
      now my crv has new shocks, a 3” lift, and bigger off road tires, she running and looking great :)

      Check the long and short term fuel trims. If both terms are adding fuel (a number without a - minus sign in front of it) you probably have a vacuum leak somewhere, and the possible cause of misfire on all cylinder's.
      (Check the MAP sensor also, poor fuel economy is a symptom if it starts going bad.)
      The J series can be a pain some times.
      P.S Tight exhaust valves can misfire (flashing CEL) with a slight backfire when cold and go away once the engine gets warm.

    • @local701
      @local701  2 роки тому +1

      Exhaust valves are probably so tight that they are not closing all the way. Over tight valves can cause a bad misfire when cold that can completely disappear when warm.

      I had a Honda J series that had a flashing CEL with backfires when cold that completely went away once warm. Turned out to be slightly tight exhaust valves.
      Just because the spark plugs are new doesn't mean they are good. Put the old plugs back in or a new cheap set to see if the misfire go's away. I had a Grand Cherokee set in my garage for a month over new defective parts. (TRUST NOTHING NEW)

      It has a standard OBD2 port, but it's in a crazy location.
      You must be on the passenger side of the car. The port is on the center stack (not the dashboard) just below the radio with the port pins facing the passenger door.

    I bought a 99 crv from a dealer and it stalls when cold. Can't tell if misfires but I think idle control valve is bad. Any ideas?

    • @local701
      @local701  2 роки тому +2

      The number one suspect would be overly tight valves. If you get tinny backfires, rough idle, and misfires until warm this may be the culprit. Once the engine is hot the valve clearances' expand a little and the misfires stop. Once it's completely cold they contract and misfire again.

  • @dhos09

    Man I am having same code and just performed the valve lash adjustments (maybe I should’ve left exhaust ones looser?? Closer to .20 as opposed to .18). It does feel like for me it’s just on cold start- 1st start of the day or a while. Anyhow I haven’t bothered to inspect my plugs yet cuz I had them and all the wires replaced within the last 2/3 years and went with the iridium ones so wouldn’t think those ones would go bad that quickly- but now I have to check them and at least I kept all of the old ones so I’m sure one of those are still good for testing purposes.

    • @dhos09

      After warmup the flashing cel does go away. I may check the tightness on my exhaust valves again as well and just leave them a bit looser…any thoughts ?

      Update: 2nd cylinder spark plug was definitely compromised. Did the same thing here- pulling cables off while car running. Also next day when I went to remove plugs and inspect, #2s was TIGHT! It actually had eaten up a bit of the bottom threading I realized after pulling. Hoping cel lights stay off, it’s only day 1 still after this discovery. Disconnected battery to clear light. My bank one o2 sensor code got triggered as well. Hoping it was just due to the misfire.🤞🏼

      You can check the normal things below also:
      The EGR may be clogged.

      Compression or leak down test if you have access to the equipment.

    Really, it was just the spark plug? I put it a new set and it still misses. Rotor and cap looks fine. I have another I can try on there. I checked the wires at night and sprayed them with water and no flashes. I checked the valve lash and it’s correct. I could loosen the exhaust valves just to do it. I will check compression.
    I had another set of fuel injectors and put them in and it’s the same. I already changed the fuel filter. And it seems like it’s getting enough fuel because it can charge around while driving.
    I’m thinking some kind of ignition problem.

      @@thesonofalivinggod6782 basically l discovered multiple problems that cause a check engine flashing light or misfire on any cilynder, first was an engine oil leak on the spark plug, which comes from the valve cover gasket inside the spark plug holes, that fixed by chanching the gasket, The second was the loose electric ignition wire connection that i created myself when i installed the start button system, and also bad battery terminal connection, that got fixed also, in addition i have adjusted the head cilynder valves (they were out of adjustment, but that improve the car idling, no more hard idling), and the last problem is the vacuum leak, which was coming from the PCV valve hose, and the intake gasket, no much, beacuse the car was running fine by increasing the fuel delivery by 14 percent, PCV valve hose has been replaced with the PCV valve and the its bushing or called gromet, but the leak coming from the intake gasket, installing new gasket dosent fixe the problem. I will try to add some good silicone rubber to the gasket to seal any potential leaks.

    • @local701
      @local701  3 роки тому +1

      If the upstream o2 was completely dead not just the heated portion. The computer will default to limp home mode and dump more fuel into the system to protect the engine. (Vehicle will run a little sluggish in this mode.)
      Once a new o2 is installed and the computer can read the air fuel ratio properly things will default back to normal. Now the fun starts.
      P1399 can be tripped in Hondas for a lot of reasons. I have two guesses.
      #1. Spark plugs were contaminated by deposits from all the excess fuel being dumped while in limp home mode. (change the plugs)
      #2. Vacuum leak. You will have to look at the fuel trims to verify that. (cracked or broken vacuum line)
      Both of these will be masked while in limp home mode, but show themselves once out of it.
      Good luck.
      PS (exhaust valves may need adjusting also)
