I don't think that the Qur'an is to be interpreted with the abrogation method as some people imply. One verse doesn't and cannot abrogate the other, instead one verse explains and helps to connect the dots in the Qur'an. If one verse contradicts the other it doesn't mean that it is to be abrogated, rather there's an error in your methodology that makes you think that it contradicts the other verses, but it doesn't. For example, GOD in the Qur'an says that: 1) GOD doesn't wrong any soul at all [4:40] 2) GOD doesn't approve of disbelief for his servants [39:7] 3) Whoever wants to believe, let him believe [18:29]. But in numerous other verses, GOD says that he has power over all things: [2:284] [3:26] [9:39] [67:1]. Does that mean GOD approves of evil and it abrogates the other verses? No. The phrase "GOD has power over all things" simply means that there's no realm where you may desire and pursue corruption and you will not be recompensed for what your hands have set forth. GOD clearly doesn't approve of immorality: [7:28] [17:32]. And GOD knows best.
If you still interpret the Qur'an with that scholarly approved abrogation method (approved by certain factions of scholars), then you have to accept that the GOD of the Vedas is the one true GOD and the only one worthy of worship. Because he says in [RIG VEDA, 10:48, 5] that he is the revealer of true knowledge that is eternal and therefore cannot be abrogated. If you think that the GOD of the Qur'an revealed knowledge that can be abrogated by another flow of true knowledge, then you are basically implying that the GOD of the Qur'an is a Demiurge God and not one true GOD who can only reveal true and eternal knowledge (astagfirullah). It's the question of truth and falsehood, so you cannot be in ᵈᵉⁿⁱᵃˡ at this point. May GOD guide us to the true understanding of the Qur'an free from others' forcefully imposed interpretation.

Who is that a test for? People are swiftly killed and taken away in an instant. How could this be a just test? We can also consider a situation aside from human suffering. What about animals? Lets say an animal in the woods gets a sick or hurt and undergoes immense pain for the rest of its life. Unlike a human, the animal isn't even able to understand why it's hurt. It has to just endure the suffering with no clue as to why. So I ask you, who is this a test for?

Thank you for this stimulating discussion. I think a common definition of evil is what intentionally causes suffering. Surely there are instances of imposing suffering in causes seen as righteous, such as in war. But it is still evil.
Shaheed Ayatullah Morteza Mutahairi in his famous book " Adel Elahi ( Divine Justice) addressed this topic of Evil. I think he took the position Evil did not exist it was absence of good. I need to recheck
Quran Chapter 4, Verse 78: "When something good befalls them, they say, “This is from Allah,” but when something evil befalls them, they say, “This is from you.” Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Both have been destined by Allah.” So what is the matter with these people? They can hardly comprehend anything!" Dr Mustafa Khattab
When "evil" is discussed when it relates to God and why God is being "put to question" for the existence of evil, humans do not have the right to rephrase the question over and over to make it look like evil pertains to them and what they think "evil" is. If evil is put to question, then it should go along the lines of "what does God define evil as" rather than " what do humans define it as". Humans are subjective, every concept and every definition works individually to each one of them. To God, however, every concept is generic and applies to everything - we are all creatures of Him, nothing is exclusive. Evil is not what you define it as, it is what God defines it as. Otherwise, your whole discussion makes no difference, you're just listing new understandings of evil and how it is contemporarily - it is not the absolute truth.
thats my thinking too... although id correct you by saying that its not these gentlemen questioning God its the non believers... when you make dawah to such people, questions like these can genuinely come up and you need to be able to answer them. The whole premise of "the problem of evil" is wrong... its a problem for us sure but its not a problem that negates God's existence... its simply a tool with which non believers and believers are seperated... free will gives us the choice between good and evil...those that choose good when through trials and tribulations win and vice versa... its simple and elegant... but of course in practice its extremely difficult... hence the people that win(monineen) have such high ranks
All Action has a REACTION You REAP WHAT YOU SOW. It’s the Universal Law. If you hate Others, Others will hate you, If you will Kill others Others will kill you. IF you Commit Atrocities to others OTHERS will do the Same . If You care for Others Others will care directly or Indirectly for you and your family. If you Treat Others Kindly OTHERS will Treat you and your family kindly wherever they may be living. If You Help others Others will help you and your Family. And if You are Celebrating their Misery then EVERY ACTION has a REACTION.
Allah says in the Quran : ِAnd of all things, we created two mates. ومن كل شيئ خلقنا زوجين اثنين لعلكم تذكرون - الذاريات - 49 So Allah created male and female, light and darkness, heat and coldness, goodness and evil, and so on. In fact, we will never know the value of goodness if we did not undergo evil, we will never appreciate health if we did not encounter sickness and so on. So, if we think profoundly, evil and goodness are interconnected in an indirect way, and the task of Shariaa is not to cut this interconnection, no, it is to display it in a plain way so, we can avoid evil and cling to goodness. On the other hand, if there is no evil or bad attributes in this world, there is no meaning at all for creating human beings and sending prophets and establishing the judgment day. Any human being asks this question then he must have a major crack in his faith.
"you and all of your descendents shall die: some later and some during their infancy years, mostly in horrific ways, because you have eaten the fruit that I specifically told you not to eat when you have no understanding of anything" ahh vibes
wouldn’t evil be simply willful disobedience to God. Like the theme of the Quran for the mujrrmuns evil deeds made fair seeming to them, they willfully disobey Allah(SWT) and they see no issue with it. not sin necessarily because we have been told that we will sin because we’re not perfect but the command of God for us in this situation is repentance so now we’re submitting our will again. If God sent us commands through revelation via prophets and the commands are for our own individual and societal benefit in this life and the next then evil would be willfully disobeying those commands to your own detriment by making the punishment justified against you. Allahu ‘Alim
let's see if this meets Occam's razor: God created a world with physical laws and put man (and jinn, previously) in it for test of who lives a moral life. Sometimes God will put us to test and sometimes the actions of others will test us. It is all about test. And no injustice will be allowed to persist on the judgement day.
Isn't coming into existence once the greatest crime? Even if you are a very good Muslim you cannot escape death, the apocalypse, and the troubles of the day of judgement. All good things are temporary, at the end great absence and death will catch everything. How a human can be happy knowing that? I am looking at the sky, trees and only seeing death. Because existence of them is only for a little moment, like us.
There will be children that dies before the age of maturity and then gets tested in the afterlife. So there are unnecessary suffering for those that do not get tested in this life meaning evil is not justified by this life being a test.
great discussion as always... though i do not agree with everything exactly as discussed... like us creating evil with our intention and not Allah is simply taking away from His Almight's power...not only by transitive property did Allah create it ... evil simply has a purpose in the big picture...it is a test for mankind (granted a very severe one at that but a test all the same) ...the whole premise of "the problem of evil" is wrong... there is no problem of evil in that it negates Gods existence... its simply a product of free will... choose to do good with it if you must...but of course evil will still exist because we arent in Paradise ...This life is supposed to have both as a test... You see evil you crush it with force or at least find it bad in your heart which is the lowest form of "emaan"... evil is a tool and a product of free will just like good is... and evil has a purpose just like good does... the purpose of freewill is simple... differentiation between believers and non believers... simple and elegant really...harsh in reality but still a pretty simple explanation for the existence of evil ...trials tribulations that we call evil are simply as sieve through which Momineen are sift and seperated from the weak of faith... evil is fought either with sword or with tawakkul(unwavering reliance in God) of course evil can dress up as money wealth and power and also as poverty pestilence and war... both ends of the spectrum can be equally devastating and efficient in sifting the real believers from the weak or non believers... May Allah guide us all Keep up the good work Mr. Williams. Love the discussions you have on here.❤💫
Somebody explain to me why innocent children in Gaza are dying under the rubble of their bombed out houses? What is the divine purpose of their suffering? It can't be because God is testing their faith. They are too young to even know what it means to have faith. So how does Naz Hassan explain the divine purpose of their suffering?
they know...as harsh as the realities of war are we dont let it waver our faith...my kin suffers from similar tribulations in Kashmir... we dont let it waver our faith... screaming at God does nothing but make you the loser...those children will get high ranks in afterlife and those inflicting such horrific crimes on them will receive divine retribution... children dying in warzones in a test of faith on everybody else if not on them(if they are too young) ... does it give us enough of a push to step into the warzone to help them? does it give us enough guts to send our sons to their aid? as harsh as it is..this is how freewill works...monsters use it for evil and even little kids in Gaza or Kashmir suffering thrrough war know they will be granted their share in good in the eternal afterlife and have their retribution

The view about God is oftenly seeing by Christianity doctrine perspective, i.e. by incarnation/tajassud تجسد. This also did by Wahhabism viewed about God, i.e. by the monotheism philoshopy or called at-tawhiid التوحيد. In Islam, there are three mentions lay to divinity: Allaah, Ilaah and Robb. Ilaah actualy talking the perspective og God for His grants for praising and God from the view of obeying. Ilaah worthies to Theos meaning and God, to Deus meaning. And Allaah itself, can't found its equivalency with specific word of other religions or languages. Allaah should exists as BEING (monotheism based on Supreme Being beliefs). So, Allaah, which understood as BEING, is there, placed outside human itself. By that, can't we change our perspective from monotheism to monism concept?. Remember, Allaah in Islam, doesn't same to Allah in Christianity which Is match to Robb or God. Monism as same as al-waahidiyah الواحدية and the basic of its divinity is panentheism. You may refers to the Ibn 'Arabi understanding. I give an example: If the mountain erupted, did by who? Allaah or the mountain itself. Monotheism will saying it by 2 materialism object as doer and became Theism. Refers to Dualism, 2 substances, there are 2 object, God aand creature. But d'you know that Allaah's mention wasn't "noun" but mashdar/source. This mashdar had Names built as nouns as objects. Allaah can't stays INSIDE universes, but Robb may to did it, like He goes down at last of one third of night (hadith). This phrase scattered here and there in Islamic main sacred sources....

Thank you for this stimulating discussion. I think a common definition of evil is what intentionally causes suffering. Surely there are instances of imposing suffering in causes seen as righteous, such as in war. But it is still evil.
Jazakallah khayr for this talk. Brother Paul, in addition to this book, what other "problem of evil" books would you recommend?
Shaheed Ayatullah Morteza Mutahairi in his famous book " Adel Elahi ( Divine Justice) addressed this topic of Evil. I think he took the position Evil did not exist it was absence of good. I need to recheck
Quran Chapter 4, Verse 78:
"When something good befalls them, they say, “This is from Allah,” but when something evil befalls them, they say, “This is from you.” Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Both have been destined by Allah.” So what is the matter with these people? They can hardly comprehend anything!"
Dr Mustafa Khattab
In metaethics, it is called Devine Command Theory
سبحان الله
When God Said this world is a test and there will be evil tempting them testing them in this world, then of course there will be evil in this world.
All Action has a REACTION
You REAP WHAT YOU SOW.
It’s the Universal Law.
If you hate Others,
Others will hate you,
If you will Kill others
Others will kill you.
IF you Commit Atrocities to others
OTHERS will do the Same .
If You care for Others
Others will care directly or Indirectly for you and your family.
If you Treat Others Kindly
OTHERS will Treat you and your family kindly wherever they may be living.
If You Help others
Others will help you and your Family.
And if You are Celebrating their Misery then EVERY ACTION has a REACTION.
It’s not complicated . Evil arises from the misuse of human freedom.
Authu billahi, "what took them so long?" 57:23 They needed an excuse, and it was provided.
Allah says in the Quran : ِAnd of all things, we created two mates.
ومن كل شيئ خلقنا زوجين اثنين لعلكم تذكرون - الذاريات - 49
So Allah created male and female, light and darkness, heat and coldness, goodness and evil, and so on.
There is a really obvious answer to this question which, by the way, is also committing the "begging the question" fallacy.
bad things come from disobeying God.man chose to go his own way, make a mess, and now ask this question.
"you and all of your descendents shall die: some later and some during their infancy years, mostly in horrific ways, because you have eaten the fruit that I specifically told you not to eat when you have no understanding of anything" ahh vibes
Its the same as asking why are there good christians jews buddhis hindus aborignees and why good things happen to these people?
wouldn’t evil be simply willful disobedience to God.
And no injustice will be allowed to persist on the judgement day.
agreed... a simple and elegant method to seperate true believers vs weak of faith
The very fact that Allah is supposedly all powerful makes all of this unnecessary and therefore injustice.
Evil is simply an entity imposing its will on other entities.
Cause this life is an test.
There will be children that dies before the age of maturity and then gets tested in the afterlife. So there are unnecessary suffering for those that do not get tested in this life meaning evil is not justified by this life being a test.
We ask you, dear professor, to receive a famous scholar who works on the statistics of the Holy Quran.
great discussion as always... though i do not agree with everything exactly as discussed...
like us creating evil with our intention and not Allah is simply taking away from His Almight's power...not only by transitive property did Allah create it ... evil simply has a purpose in the big picture...it is a test for mankind (granted a very severe one at that but a test all the same) ...the whole premise of "the problem of evil" is wrong... there is no problem of evil in that it negates Gods existence... its simply a product of free will... choose to do good with it if you must...but of course evil will still exist because we arent in Paradise ...This life is supposed to have both as a test...
You see evil you crush it with force or at least find it bad in your heart which is the lowest form of "emaan"... evil is a tool and a product of free will just like good is... and evil has a purpose just like good does... the purpose of freewill is simple... differentiation between believers and non believers... simple and elegant really...harsh in reality but still a pretty simple explanation for the existence of evil
...trials tribulations that we call evil are simply as sieve through which Momineen are sift and seperated from the weak of faith... evil is fought either with sword or with tawakkul(unwavering reliance in God)
of course evil can dress up as money wealth and power and also as poverty pestilence and war... both ends of the spectrum can be equally devastating and efficient in sifting the real believers from the weak or non believers...
May Allah guide us all
Keep up the good work Mr. Williams. Love the discussions you have on here.❤💫
Because humans exist
If god doesn't exist then why do good things happen.
Good and evil can happen without god, but evil cannot happen with god.

@@SuicidalSummerSnowWoman Are you telling me as far as the children are concerned, their suffering is for the purpose of getting "high ranks in afterlife"? So you're suggesting their suffering is actually a blessing. We all should be grateful to God for their suffering because they will get "high ranks in afterlife". Is that it? Did I understand you correctly?
Yet to listen, do they mean recent russian/putin air strikes in Aleppo?
According to the "good book", Yahweh was a warlord. Seems he still is. Isn't war supposed to be bad?
an act in itself is not good or bad. it is the intention behind that action that makes it good or bad. War is the same.
God did not tell Abraham to sacrifice his son, God showed him a dream in which he was sacrificing his son.
Abraham took that as a command to sacrifice him, but God did not command him to do it.
Dreams have interpretations.
So Abraham misinterpreted God and decided to kill his son??? Lol😊
@@Drigger95 Well, God says to Abraham "you believed the dream?" in the Quran.
So, maybe he did misinterpret the dream and thought that it was a command from God.
Why is that funny? I don't understand.

ذَٰلِكَ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ لَيْسَ بِظَلَّامٍ لِلْعَبِيدِ
"... realy it wasn't Allaah, with darkness (persecution) for His servant"
For Western, mostly.
I give an example:
If the mountain erupted, did by who? Allaah or the mountain itself. Monotheism will saying it by 2 materialism object as doer and became Theism. Refers to Dualism, 2 substances, there are 2 object, God aand creature. But d'you know that Allaah's mention wasn't "noun" but mashdar/source. This mashdar had Names built as nouns as objects. Allaah can't stays INSIDE universes, but Robb may to did it, like He goes down at last of one third of night (hadith). This phrase scattered here and there in Islamic main sacred sources....
There is no god. Now, why do bad things happen?

If there was no god then there would be no good or bad things. Things would just happen. There would be no inherent meaning in things. Which is why we talk of good and bad things precisely because there is a god. I hope that answers your question.
@@stevesmith4901 So, without god, cancer would not be bad?
@@prestonbacchus4204 Objectively nothing would be good or bad without God. Meaning will be entirely subjective, personally constructed. Cancer will be bad because you would consider it to be bad. Not because there was something inherently bad about cancer.
