OMGODS, KATHLEEN. Do a series wherein you use these products to create era-accurate makeup looks! How fun to see you try a 60s wing WITH a product they used in the 60s!
Kathleen, I am now 70, spent my teenage years in Lima Peru and makeup was hard to come by. I used a Max Factor mascara that came in a tube, looked like acrylic paint and a little brush...it was fantastic!! When it finally dried out I cried because it was no longer available! Oh to be 16 again!! :)
here is a little more info: Max Factor is the grandfather (or great-grandfather) of the 2 guys that started Smashbox. Also, concealer was called "coverup" and came in a lipstick bullet. We would use that with lipgloss (or vaseline so we wouldn't mess up our rollerball lipgloss) and make the first nude lipstick. As for the pancake foundation, it wasn't like the stick. It was hard and dry, so you would have to use a makeup sponge (those wedge ones) and slightly wet it. The less wet, the more coverage you got, and visa versa. Bronzer was huge in the 80s, right under the cheekbone, and you'd bring it all the way up to your ear. Very Miami-disco era. And eyeliner, well, we would buy black eyebrow pencil and light them so we could get "liquid" eyeliner. Yes, I am old haha
I used to use Max Factor way back and let me tell you, that pancake makeup could hide your existence! It was a actually a wet/dry product and we would use a wet triangle sponge and turn that pan into a slosh of liquid makeup. Ahhh the memories!
Max Factor was one of the first brands I tried when I started experimenting with makeup as a teen. It was already relegated to the bottom shelf of drugstores by then! Pancake makeup is still used by ballerinas and people in theater. 😉
My mom wore a bronzer called Indian Earth back in the 70s. It was very trendy back then. Lisa Eldridge purchased at auction one of Audrey Hepburn’s iconic lipsticks. She has a video where she tries it on and talks about it. She copied that shade in her lipstick line. Her book Face Paint chronicles the history of makeup. It’s fantastic.
If I remember correctly, the kohl used in ancient Egypt was more for practicality as well a beauty. It was for helping with sun in the eyes, kind of like sunglasses in a way. It also had deep religious and medical purposes in ancient times for them as well. It's akin, for the sun issue, to sports figures wearing the thick black lines under their eyes to help with sun glare and stuff, amongst a few other things!!! Loved this video!!
That's what I've heard as well, like how football players put black stripes under their eyes. They also used to crush up valuable minerals, including gold, malachite, lapis, stuff like that to make their eyeshadow.
Love it! *Besame mascara tip: I use this stuff, but kept one my favorite mascara wands after the mascara was done, washed it off, and that's what I use with the besame mascara, because that brush it comes with can drive a girl to drink!
Absolutely loved this vintage inspired video!! You should totally do a video for each decade of the twentieth century! From the 1920s, 1930s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90, 00s etc!! I think that would be SO much fun to watch!! :)
Such a fun series! Theater makeup is probably close to pan cake makeup. Take a look at Ben Nye products. I would love to see a video with you trying theatre makeup. Funny Face is a must see!
Girl, this video is so fun and intriguing! I think it would be so interesting if you did different videos reviewing old school brands and their most popular products (Max Factor, Revlon, Maybelline, Elizabeth Arden, etc).
When you got to the Revlon lipstick... I knew Fire and Ice had to be talked about! My 87 year old grandma has worn it since it launched and it’s still her go-to lip ❤️
Such a fun video. Max Factor was still huge when I was a teenager. I remember mum telling me she wore pancake makeup in the 60s. Shisedo still does one which is a wet and dry cake. That was my go to in the 90s lol. Makeup can be so nostalgic. Adore you so much xxxx
Loved this miniseries Kathleen, really interesting and fun to watch! Bourjois and Max Factor are still big hits at the drugstore in Europe, we have counters everywhere, next to Maybelline, L'oreal and the like. And actually my go to mascara is one from Max Factor (NO ONE can beat the wand from the MAsterpiece Max) and the Bourjois liquid eyeshadows are awesome! Oh and I used the Stick for a long time as concealer. xo
Fun and awesome fact : Bésame cosmetics Victory Red lipstick is a recreation of Elizabeth Arden's Montezuma Lipstick that was issued to Female U.S Marines during WW2. Like it was part of thier uniform to wear Montezuma Red lipstick 💄
Maybe you could do a series of make up trends of each decade that would be so much fun since it seems like you enjoyed researching and learning about makeup history!
My mother taught me how to put makeup on using pancake makeup. Basically the same as today? We used a wet sponge to apply and had control. of how much we used based on how much we put on the sponge. It was really good if you like full and I mean full coverage. Wow this really took me back❤️. Thanks Kathleen!
I loved both of these videos so much! They're so refreshing, and your excitement in telling us what you learned is contagious. I hope you're able to do some more videos like these, but if not, thanks for doing these two. 💜
My mom used to use "tierra India" (Indian earth) as bronzer when I was a kid and it looks to be one of those things that have been there for ever. It comes in a little ceramic container with a cork to close it... and let me tell you something, it was EXTREMELY pigmented! hahahha! but my mom looked amazing when she used it 💛

One thing that I learned and loved about this video. Kathleen, If I am saying your name the right way. I really loved how you explained the history of makeup. xoxo.
Good job! From a 67 year old makeup maven, lipstick was the main thing until 1970’s when lipgloss came on the market. Also at that time, the term blusher came into use, before that it was rouge.

When I was in high school Max Factor still made pancake makeup. My girlfriend used it every day. You had to use a wet sponge. I learned this technique way before it was popular. It was matte and a little heavy but was great for oily skin.
I think this can be a series. You can do videos talking and replicating Lucille Balls makeup, Audrey H., Marilyn M. You can even start with Egyptian makeup before and how it has evolved to now.
Ugh Kathleen, it seriously makes my day when you upload, your videos are always the fresh of breath air I need. I have been thinking of you & praying for you & hoping you are having better days. ♥️

Me too lol
Kathleen thank you so much for taking the time to research and put this together!! Had so much fun learning about makeup!!
When I was in high school Max Factor still made pancake makeup. My girlfriend used it every day. You had to use a wet sponge. I learned this technique way before it was popular. It was matte and a little heavy but was great for oily skin.
Your videos make my day Kathleen. Don't ever doubt the impact you have on people. Te mando un abrazo de argentina ❤️
I think this can be a series. You can do videos talking and replicating Lucille Balls makeup, Audrey H., Marilyn M. You can even start with Egyptian makeup before and how it has evolved to now.
SUPER INTERESTING CONTENT!
