Great tutorial which took me back YEARS to when I too ran weddings and had to do the slab cutting to ensure all guests got a piece, old school hack, but loving the new geometric one which appeals to my love of detail and symmetry 🤓
I have one other variation, taught to me by my mum who was born in the Great Depression. She'd cut a small circle in the middle of the cake, roughly halfway from the centre to the edge. So you have a ring of cake around the outer edge that you can then cut into small wedges. The "mini cake" you're left with in the centre can then be cut into triangle wedges too. It's not as elegant as the geometric method but not bad innovation for the pre-internet days!
My hubby would like the 1st way, big slices. I like the 2nd way. The 3rd way would be great to make the cake go further. I'm definitely going to try these ways out. ❤
Not only does Jemma clearly explain and show each method, Jemma and the team put the pieces back together for the thumbnail! Appreciate all the effort!
So happy to see this having got buttercream all over my hands at parties and people complaining they less cake . I like a wedge but I know many people would prefer the geometric portions
The geometric way is so satisfying too! But I gotta say, sheet cakes are kind of the way to go for me these days, because you can cut it any which way, big or small, and no one will be as bothered 😂
I wish I knew the snowflake method when I hosted a bridal shower. So many people didn’t RSVP and the bride didn’t want to say no at the last minute. I cut 1/4th inch slices to make it work. Phew! My favor amount of cake is the bottom half of the slice you took. No butter cream for me. Just the filling and tiny bit of sponge is good enough! I enjoy baking and decorating cakes as opposed to eating them.
The geometric cutting is genius! Great way to have lots of pieces, everyone gets some icing and it doesn’t trigger my absolute hatred of anyone cutting round cakes into slices. 😊
I love the Geometric cake cut. I'm 57 years old and live in an RV Park that's for 55 year olds and older. Most of us don't want large pieces of cake. ❤
I absolutely love the geometric cutting style! 💖👌It just look so beautiful and you get so many pieces of cake out of it, its amazing! I do love a perfect slice! Great cutting skills Jemma!😊
I don’t know if you can cut a geometric or slabs from a soft creamy sponge cake? It works great for the hard dense cakes, don’t know about the soft cakes.
I love the geometric slices Jemma thank you. Hoping to visit you at Crumbs and Dollies in December, can’t wait. Thank you sooooooo much for all the videos.
I always wonder how cold a cake should be to cut. Because it's recommended that it's out of the fridge about 2h before serving, but by then the buttercream is very soft and the cut is so messy. What does the cupcake Jemma team think ? And anyone else ?
The second and third methods are really nice. Often celebration cakes are super sweet so for me it makes sense cutting smaller slices, whereas other cakes I wouldn't mind a bigger slice lol
I use option 2 sometimes but mostly option 4 which is cutting a circle(s) in the centre of the cake and then cutting slices around before slicing the inner circle.
@@CupcakeJemma it's useful for 8 inch or larger round cakes. I use option 2 for smaller diameter tall cakes. I made an 8 inch round cake stretch to 30 pieces by cutting it using the circle method. Lots of people had never seen a cake cut that way before.
Oh my gosh, my mum used to do this! It does mean cutting into the centre of the cake using the knife vertically - definitely a bit of a faff- and it's not as pretty or clean a result as the slab or geometric models. But it makes a cake go further, which would have been the motivation for my mum, who was born in the 1930s
My problem is usually trying to get rid of cake.😂 At my kid’s last birthday party I sent everyone home with an extra slice. I’ve never tried slab or geometric cutting, but wow, that makes getting a lot of pieces out of a 7 inch cake look easy. 😮
I'm going to try the geometric slice. I've done the straight way and the one where u make a circle in the center and cut the edges. I always get so messy. I like how the geo looks all the same and maybe it won't be so messy. For those that want a bigger slice, simple, have 2 slices.😊
I'm thinking of doing half geometric / half wedge at the next party since it'll be a combination of children who just need a little piece and adults who often want a big piece.
Such an interesting video and I could go in many ways. However, while everyone I showed the geometric cut to agreed it was the most aesthetically pleasing, they also all agreed that Oliver Twist would have gotten bigger pieces at the orphanage. 😂. The logic is its for toddlers but because of the very reason you stated, I would omit cakes from birthdays for children that young. They are however excellent size for tea cakes....actual tea cakes and not cookies.
My preferred method would be wedge. Perfect cake to icing ratio in my opinion. But I totally get how the geometric for a kids party would be better cause they take one bite or lick the icing off anyways.
The geometric way sounds brillant. I'm going to give it a try but my biggest concern is that my cakes are so tender and I don't think I could flop it on the counter for that one particular cut without it falling apart. Maybe if the cake is cold it would work.
A big slice for me, thank you. I love cake. Most cakes are not this firm and tend to fall apart when the knife is inserted. It would be impossible to cut them that neatly unless they're frozen first.
I never freeze cake! 😱 but this one had been in the fridge for an hour which is why it looks a bit firm. I can assure you once it was at room temp it was soft and fluffy and perfect! 😍
No knife needed: Pass the cake around and everyone take a bite till it's all gone. I'm joking, of course, I commented only because I love the English accent.
Mind Blown. Especially with how ridiculously tall cakes are, the geometric approach makes so much sense!
Riiiight! It’s a great way to cut a cake ❤
My ideal for one of your cakes would be to cut it in half, save one half for myself and then cut the rest into smaller pieces for everyone else! 😂
Great plan. I approve!
😂😂
My thought exactly
😂 yes, I love this plan!
The geometric way remains the cleverest thing I have ever seen 😂😂
And the prettiest!
Great tutorial which took me back YEARS to when I too ran weddings and had to do the slab cutting to ensure all guests got a piece, old school hack, but loving the new geometric one which appeals to my love of detail and symmetry 🤓
Bravo, the geometric cutting is a thing of beauty! ❤
I know. So pleasing!

I use this method for cakes larger than 10 inches.

I'm definitely going to try these ways out.
❤
Yay! Give it a go!
Not only does Jemma clearly explain and show each method, Jemma and the team put the pieces back together for the thumbnail! Appreciate all the effort!
They just took a picture before taking the pieces out
Thanks for cutting through all the kerfuffle about how to slice up a cake. 🎂
I see what you did there 😉😆
So happy to see this having got buttercream all over my hands at parties and people complaining they less cake . I like a wedge but I know many people would prefer the geometric portions
I will always love the classic wedge but the geometric style is definitely going to be a go to for big parties!
The geometric way is so satisfying too! But I gotta say, sheet cakes are kind of the way to go for me these days, because you can cut it any which way, big or small, and no one will be as bothered 😂
Omg I went full on rage mode on a Facebook page showing your video! How dare they diss our jemma!! I was NOT having it ❤❤

Thanks Jemma, i always used to ask others to cut cake at my event. Now onwards I will do it myself 😊
Those pastel colours look amazing ❤
I love these colours. So fun!

@@rachelabodale7375these cakes were all freshly baked & super soft, just chilled in the fridge for half an hour to firm up a little for slicing!
The geometric cut is so genius! ❤❤❤
And it’s actually fun!

The last method is just brilliant
Right? I love it so much!
Beautiful cakes, love the colors!!🥰
Thank you xx
I love the diamond cut...i would love to learn that...

that was sooo lovely and unique! my fav one is also geometrical one thanks a lot!

Thank you, very helpful video.
Great video Jemma. Thanks!
This is so helpful! Thank you for this video 🎂🩷
You're so welcome!
Thank you Jemma❤
I absolutely LOVE your videos! I needed to learn, about cake cutting so this one was spot on! Love you, Gemma!❤
They don’t teach you these things at school, unfortunately 😂 I’m here to
Help!
Love your videos love you are amazing baker
Aw shucks. Thanks

Excellent method
I love how you’re so flexible and upbeat ❤ you know how to please all these vampires 😂😂😂
There are many and they want BLOOD! (And a big slice of cake apparently 😂)
Geometric Way is the BEST ❤
Thank you so much ❤

Let me.just say that sponge looks mouth watering.
Is that your new vanilla sponge u shared recently?
I like 12 slices.
It is the new vanilla cake recipe! ❤
My preferred method would be wedge. Perfect cake to icing ratio in my opinion. But I totally get how the geometric for a kids party would be better cause they take one bite or lick the icing off anyways.
This is great, is there a cake recipe that would be ideal to serve at a 1st birthday? Like with less sugar for weaning babies
I like to use runny fillings like curds and fruit puree. It’s very hard to cut into the smaller pieces without them getting messy and coming apart.
I use a cake divider!!! Also, where did you get the knife would love that to cut my cakes!
I always cut the wedge, but am learning to like the diamond
Geometric all the way!!!
Ngl, I really wanted you to troll us at the end with a 4th cake cut totally haphazzardly. ;)
The wedge slices can also be cut in half
Indeed they can!

To all the haters that think #3 has too smaller pieces…..aah just have bloody 2 😂
How thick are your cake layers itself? 1 or 1.5 inch thick?
Loved will definitely try the last cutting style ❤
Where is the knife from… is it in your web store?
I want to cut a rainbow cake to get 16 even cake slices
Is there any way you know
Geometric and give the kids the outside triangles, but don’t cut the diamonds and give those to the adults! I do really like large slices, though!
No knife needed:
Pass the cake around and everyone take a bite till it's all gone.
I'm joking, of course, I commented only because I love the English accent.
Just have square cakes. Much easier to slice
❤
It doesn't matter how you cut a cake as long as I get a piece of cake and I would like one but lots of faustin.
I HOPE TO MAKE VIDEOS AS BEAUTIFUL AS YOURS❤
Aww that’s so kind. Thank you xx
3
Fabulous advice ❤❤❤❤
Το δεύτερο δεν μου άρεσε τα αλλά είναι οκ
Thanks
Sorry but the whole cake for me
No sharing and no guests taking my cake....
Is that greedy ?
Sometimes a whole cake is absolutely what you need 😂
I would love to see a video about how to clean and wash, because that's one of the things that stop me from baking 🤷♀️🫶
