    I'm from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. We have a wildfire season every year but these past few years have been the worst on record. I've had the pleasure of visiting Madeira a few years ago and I'm very saddened to hear that these fires are happening there. Madeira is paradise and I hope that this stops soon. More than that, I hope that everyone is safe.

    This breaks my heart. One thing that no one knows: For some reason, in Portugal fireman gets paid-bonuses per square meter burned! They are volunteers. In order to get paid a proper salary they have to do 12 hour shifts and they get paid extra per m2 burned. The bigger the fire, the more they get paid. I know this sounds crazy and nonsense but this is funded by the wood industry and allowed by the govermnent. Burned wood is sold in auction for 1/10 of the price and is still a useful tool for the industry. When houses are burned, the owners get a compensation equal to 1/4 of the real price of the land and the house. And this is happening now in Spain also.
    There is no interest to have as many resources as possible to extinguish the fire because they need the funded money to keep those same resources available and to pay the maintenance. Isnt ironic?

I could see the smoke of Pedrogão Grande (In high places with clear skies), and Just the smell of fire makes me alerted, and i need to see where the smell comes from. There was one time that i passed by a place called Senhor da Serra, and five days later, it was all burned down, the sign was bending, naked trees, even with no fire there, it was hard to breathe, it was too hot, and the smell was bad. But thanks for the hint, i hope i do not need to do that. The most scary one was the October 2017 fire, in my district, the media was saying that it was big and wide, but it did not arrived here. Plants can grow back, but humans can't, which is why "no one" is taking action, the terrain's so bad you can't even stand properly, let alone get fire trucks in there. Plus, you’ve got to think about the confusing it is to set up, refuel, and do it all again, all while dealing with steep, slippery ground and crazy temperatures. It’s just not doable, to many risks for loss of lives. Helicopters without ground support are also not very useful.
    I understand the rage towards the fact that not much is being done to stop the fire, but they will eventually figure it out, Portugal, madeira and açores are very common to wildfires, they know what they are doing. For example, if the fire eats the green and the front of the fire reaches a road for example, all that they have to do is kill the front of the fire with the help of the road, and boom the fire is no more with no risk of losing lives, well unless you count the green, that is sad.

    • @somedudeAPS
      @somedudeAPS 4 місяці тому +2

      @@joenandamalie Not that dramatically, but he has a point. It is how it works.
      Firefighters are "a big no" there, helicopters can't flight unless conditions are apropriate, Canadairs "deployment" means 6 tons of water falling on a relatively small area, which by itself can cause landslides and damage to the geography (that's why it isn't used ever on populated areas or infrastructures), It's not only the water, but the weight too that helps put out fires).
      Letting the fire rage and contain it's perimeter it's an absolutely valid strategy, the fire stopped short of Calheta (Paul da Serra front, on Saturday) using that exact strategy.

      @@joenandamalie That's a radical way of saying it, but it's not wrong, also it's not the houses or the infrastructure but the people that relly on those, there isn't a safer way of doing it, anything else would allow to much risk, it's a harsh reality but as i said, the green will regrow. If i had bought a house in madeira and later found out that the great views are discartable, i would be pretty mad as well tho. We understand your points, we are just saying that, this is the way it works and it makes sense, the sooner you accept it, the best.

    As a Portuguese not only am I saddened but extremely infuriated with how this is being handled. How hard is it to understand that wildfires effects not only air quality, human and environmental health, their consequences extend far beyond the period while the wildfire is actively burning. Wildfires have many long-term effects on human health, wildlife and the
    environment . In addition to contaminating the air with toxic pollutants, wildfires also simultaneously impact the climate by releasing large quantities of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. It also impacts the soil such as erosion problems which can affect the land and local water sources. Unstable soil can contribute to mudslides, flooding events, and land degradation. I could go on and on. Portugal we are better than this, something has to change. Thank you Joen and Amelie for bringing us awareness to all of us. ❤ from the US

    Seems that the helicopter was transporting firefighters to Pico Ruivo.
    Still, Madeira and Porto Santo should have at least 2 helicopters for rescue and emmergy.
    I agree about nature, even laurisilva forests don't seem to be given value, only houses, people and infraestructure.
    Some species of trees like eucaliptos only damage the soil and promote uncontrolled fires, endemic natural forest is way more resilient against fires.
    First rain will make landslides and ash mud in the cliffs, in the levadas and water lines, ash and weak soil is always a problem, now and later, in the beginning of the winter.
    In a week and a half I'll be in Funchal to paint and draw, I was in Leiria Pine Forest and in Serra da Estrela after the big fires, it was impressive, burnt landscape is so sad, no noise from the birds or trees, only black squeletons...

    Firefighting isn't reduced to just "throw water on it".
    The Helicopter was running recon surely, so they can trace the right course of action.
    Also you can throw 1 billion firefighters and it doesn't matter if they can't reach the fire.
    The situation is simple. All they can do now is make due, hopefully the Canadairs help. The homework wasn't done, that's the problem.
    You really "fight" wildfires before they start. We should've cleaner forests and fire-brakeing-trenches ready as summer starts. This highly flammable trees and shrubbery aren't native or apropriate to Madeira's summer, fires will happen, but we should be able to manage them if we prepare the field properly. "Limit" it's range.

    Problem is that firefighters can’t fight the fire up there, the only alternative is to let it burn until it reaches places where they can fight it!!
    Even the helicopter finds it hard to reach some of those altitudes with water load, given that is a medium firefighter helicopter!! And because of the winds in some of the valleys the helicopter is no option!!!
    Of course there is bigger helicopters and planes in the main land, but they don’t have the autonomy to fly direct there!!! They would need to be transported by boat there!!! That’s why asking for help in air support to the main land and other countries is not a solution!!!
    If the decision to keep only one firefighting helicopter in the island is smart??? No it’s not !!! But that s what the autonomous govern of Madeira though was adequate.

  • @luispaulo5373
    @luispaulo5373 4 місяці тому

    I think it is a bit harsh suggesting firefighters and helicopter pilot are like nature sociopats. There is a reason why sometimes it doenst take the water bucket, it is called recognition flights. There are technical reasons why it doesnt drop water in the obvious places, usually because the local wind just makes it too dangerous. The number of firefighters is around 180, there are 700 firefighters in the island but for obvious reasons you cant have the 700 working at same time otherwise they would all go to sleep at same time 48h later.
    Salt water can have a dramatic effect in Laurissilva soils, the Canadair will refill water in Porto Santo (natural water).

    i've heard of so many huge fires all over the world in the past year or so, and some theories with some of the fires are about the governments themselves, the elite, some law enforcement, etc., are in on starting the fires for land grabs for some reason, some for 15 minute cities, etc...There's a channel called, "Hustl," which used to be called, "Hustle Bitch," (typing the old name in comes up more than the new name), but he was looking into the Lahaina, Maui fires and doing a really good job of obtaining info., but then over a year ago was silenced, though recently he came out with another video about the fires there...i believe in that video there is some footage of blue lasers starting the fires on purpose...i'm sure he knows more than most people what's going on with a lot of these fires....Law enforcement wouldn't even let people escape the fires there so some people died trying to drive out of town which was blocked by police...It seems like "they" wanted people to die for some reason...There were many coincidences there that led to the fires destroying everything on purpose which he talks about in his videos last year....And it doesn't help that websites like youtube advertise these flashlight looking things that ignite large flames, and arsonists are probably the ones buying them......i was thinking lately if Madeira was also going to fall victim to fires, though what would be the purpose of destroying the steep mountains in Madeira as i don't think anyone can live on the jagged parts...?......i just looked on windy.com and there's a section that you can click to see the active fires, (where the 3 dots are)...A couple hours ago, Madeira, indeed had a couple red dots, signifying fires there...If you zoom out a little you can see a huge portion of Africa is constantly on Fire and the governments don't do anything about it...i don't know how people live there...Also South America is having a lot of fires....Last month Mexico had a ton of fires...www.windy.com/?32.669,-3.110,5
    Too bad the government, (and all governments), don't want to invest in sea-water de-salination plants around the island...Having large backups of water, figuring out how to transport the water up the mountains might be helpful, if that's possible...
    Also, be really careful when you travel to Mexico or anywhere, as there have been some people that have been drugged drinking water, or other drinks...Here are a few videos about it...1 ~ ua-cam.com/video/ZlKaeibzPVs/v-deo.html

    It will all grow back in a year. Wildfires are a very important aspect of a cycle in ecosystems and are beneficial to the environment in many ways.
    Just put a blue roof on your house and a sprinkler system and everything will be fine

    Fire makes less harm to nature than salt water... if they use salt water the vegetation will take ages to grow , 10x more than actually does after the fires.
    But luckily they found a solution for the canadairs and lets hope the wheater conditions allow them to fly safely.

    • @joenandamalie
      @joenandamalie  4 місяці тому

      Absolute nonsense. The fires have detrimental effects. Already one of the rarest and most endangered sea birds have been pushed out of the island after the fires. It’s nesting season so the eggs have been taken by the fire. Additionally, after a fire the invasive species are prone to take over everything which means the vegetation will have little to no variation and uniqueness. Remember that salt water won’t be dumped on every hectar of the forest. Only on the fires.

    What I cannot understand is that many ware saying that the helicopter cannot fly because of the wind, can i ask you what king of drawn you have BECAUSE IF A DRAWN CAN FLY DEFINITLY A HELICOPTER CAN FLY TOO.

  • @danielguerreiro8553
    @danielguerreiro8553 4 місяці тому

    Canadair airplanes can only be used in a non population area, the air drop of the water is very heavy. And since the wind has been strong, the helicopters have a low visibility to operate. All this and with the very difficult terrain, difficults the fire fight. Nevertheless, I do agree that leting the area burn, is not ideal.
