My god, that last line brought tears to my eyes. This island is unique in every way, it holds such a special place in my heart and I truly believe there is nowhere like Madeira on earth. It is the most spectacular, breathtaking island with the friendliest people and great food. My god my love for this island knows no bounds. I am literally counting the seconds until I can come back in October. Madeira, you are in my head, my heart, you’re in the blood that runs through my veins (literally as my dad is from the island). This tiny little island takes my breath away EVERY SINGLE TIME.
Thank you for sharing your video. My heart goes out to you and your community. I was planning on traveling to and hiking that area, October 11-16. Your update was valuable, and I will change plans and stay out of the work taking place. Keep strong.
Major flood risk now in those valleys as we head into winter! Have those streams clear and ready. Mudflow risks also to any home with denuded hill above on hill! Time for preparing ahead with sandbags and diversions to any of those owners!
Is it weird I still find it beautiful? Here's hoping there are no serious landslides in the coming years as the hills recover. Thank you for the coverage guys, Joen is a wizard with that drone.
It is indeed remarkable how beautiful Madeira remains, even when burnt down 😥 Lobo do Mouro hiked it recently from Ribiera brava to Encumeada, I descended to Serra de Agua from levada do Norte, Mulitple times via Boca da Cerro either to Pico Grande or via Boca dos Namorados back to the Nuns valley, Many times from Arriero or Curral to Encumeada, one time via Lombo dos Portais via Ruivo to Arriero etc. Too many beautiful hikes and fond memories to mention.... It is now the 4th forest fire I remember 2010 (Ecological park), 2016 (NE of Funchal), last years fire and now this one. In the ecological park it took a very long time before even the burn tree trunks got removed. Now finally scrub has returned but climbs from the Corrujeiras valley to levada Barriera remain highly unstable. I love the island intensely and it saddens me deeply to see the island suffer once more. Best wishes to all Madeirans and speedy recovery!
Very nice drone footage reflecting the aftermath. You can clearly see the ridge effect of having a very humid north side contrasting with the very dry conditions on the south. This is the miracle that protected Boaventura and Sao Vicente. Do to your amazing filming and editing capabilities it would be great you could share is a long term timelapse showing how nature will recover in the next 12 months.
The big problem here is that new life will grow, but it won't be the species that existed before. There will be invasive species such as eucalyptus and acacia, and there are endemic species at risk of extinction. Despite the efforts of the authorities, it is difficult to control the area and prevent it from happening again. As long as Portuguese legislation doesn't impose severe penalties on those who cause these disasters, it will happen again. Or they'll be punished by popular justice (I have very vivid ideas of what to do to these people). 😢
Good morning. Thank you for your information. I hope that a year from now you will show the recovery of nature (at this point the media has already forgotten the subject). Thanks.
It is winter here in Sydney and we are having record breaking hot temperatures (high 20s) which is not normal. We have already had wildfires which is super early for it, there was one near my home and I can't imagine in summer. Small wildfires are perfectly fine as they help the forests rejuvenate but when it's a large scale like this one on Madeira, it could affect lives and homes. Stay safe!
Thank you for this amazing and well edited footage. I have seen several fires here but this one is heartbreaking....but it will green up in time. DN newspaper today "Authorized Fireworks caused the conflagration" I hope one day people will learn not to use dangerous rocket fireworks on this green and wooded Island.
Yeah, when I saw that the fires were happening, I did feel sad. Wood ash adds a lot of nutrition to the ground, so I believe everything will come back even more beautiful than it was. 💛🌷
The problem with wildfires, not just in Madeira but everywhere is the criminals that start the fire. Probably next time the aeroplanes could be used earlier, since now the authorities know it works well and fast.
Started to following you guys, not only because I live here but because of the drone footage and you guys were giving some shots that no media gave. Glad its over. I also fly drones, not looking forward to check the damage we have on the island. 😢 nice footage! Which drone you flying? MAVIC3P? The quality is on point. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for your documentation of this, guys. Chris, the market guy. Can't help but feel that a series of fire hydrants around the island would help. Of course, it'd require a significant feat of engineering.
Oh wow, such devastation. We hope no one was hurt. It’s such a relief to hear that the fires on Madeira have finally been contained. Nature can start to heal now. It’s truly amazing that the homes were spared despite such intense fires. A small miracle in the midst of destruction. There’s something profound about finding peace in the aftermath of chaos. Nature’s resilience is a powerful reminder. Nature has an incredible way of bouncing back. It’s heartening to know that Madeira’s beauty will return.
Even though the island is burned, it remains beautiful. It sounds strange, but it's true. Nature will recover quickly, and in a few months, everything will be green again. However, it is more important to prevent such fires or to respond more quickly. Why didn't the firefighting planes arrive earlier? With their help, the fire could have been extinguished much faster, and far less area would have burned.
So, what's the alternative? Coal or natural gas or other fossil fuel power plants, that emit CO2 to the atmosphere, witch is transforming the planet climate? Nuclear power plants that have the problem of the nuclear residues? Every energy source has his pros and cons. windmills and solar panels are the ones with least cons against the nature.
@@juvi999 yes, the nuclear is green, the problem is to guarantee the security of the facilities and the residues during thousands of years. A generation or two make use of the advantages of nuclear central, and than dozens of generations have to pay for it, to maintain the installations and residues secured, or pay for the dismantling, which is ultra-expensive, if possible. Dismantling solar panels or windmills is very easy, fast, and the nature can recover the places very quick.
This is exactly where the island got its name from apparently.Let me explain: My parents and sibling were born on Madeira (translates to ‘wood’ in Portuguese).Even though we now reside in South Africa, we lived there for a few years during my childhood. In Madeira there is a tale that goes like this: When the 1st discoverers got to the island, there was a wildfire (possibly started by them to eradicate some of the fauna or not I don’t know), and because the island wasn’t inhabited and the landscape had an even bigger population of trees etc. it is said the island burned for 7 years straight, hence the name Madeira (wood). Whether that story is myth or truth, I don’t know. Makes for a good story though.I always found that story fascinating, and could only imagine what it would look like to witness in person, this past wildfire has settled my imagination somewhat.
Thank you for sharing the aftermath. The problem is that what grows back are plants/trees that burn very easily and will just make the fire worse next time. :/ Hopefully, the goverment can plant other trees, that don't burn so quickly.
Our arrogant, dictatorial and incompetent Regional Government totally downplays this disaster from the start: it is just trees they say. Horrifying, they should all be fired by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa 😢
7:20 thats not "peace" its more grief. This is because there is no birds and wild life making the "noise" they normally do, because unfortunately most their habitat is burnt.
Yeah it’s the people coming together to improve the serene beauty of Madeira’s nature by adding 200 hundred feet white metal structures that doesn’t just kill wildlife, but the desire to see out of ones eyes.
it is bad but also not so much. Madeira has got lucky with all its tree's, it could have been so much worse. if you understand? Sorry my English is not so good
1:59 excellent pronunciation of "Madei *ra* " you pronounce the same "...ra" for Pico g *ra* nde :) edit: 7:40 jesus christ, insane pronunciation of "obrigada" and even not pronouncing the "o" like a lot of portuguese do. I would've deduced you were portuguese If I were those men at the road doing the limbo!
Really dude , since when installing a system to generate CLEAN energy is a crime ? Are you turning around and support the dirty energy instead , like coal etc , or just move back to nuclear plants ? One can’t have the chicken and the eggs
Thanks to all of you who supported by donating money, food, water and whatnot. It made all the difference ❤

uau that shot of the cow and the background with the slightly haunting music - just beautiful

Thanks so much for keeping us informed. Greetings from Australia.
Thank you for this vídeo from a guy who born in Madeira, but now im living in Lisbon. Appreciate my little island ❤
You'll be surprised at how quickly new life grows. Hopefully will be beautiful and green again soon.
Not the trees and the forest, unfortunately.

Let's hope that in the winter time everything will be OK. 🙏

Hi guys, thank you once again for the videos you showing continuously.
Thank you for the video and most of all for wanting to protect this land I call my country. Thank you
Thank you for all the coverage we don't get from the TVs.
That's so sad. We were there the first two weeks of June and drove through Serra D'Agua almost every day. Hopefully things recover quickly.
Thanks for your documentation of this, guys. Chris, the market guy.

Amalie's Portuguese pronunciation is perfect!
Great stuff. Thank you. What are some of the strategies that could be implemented to lessen the impact of wildfires besides using water planes?
Chaos before cosmos… can’t wait to see Madeira bounce back!
ach i was in hollidy in Estonia but we watch situation in madria everyday. it is very sad.... i love this place. I hope nature will raise
❤ thank you ❤
Thanks for do much information. One more concern what about Curral dos Freiras?
Thank you!
Those hills and ashes can be so dangerous during the rains, can cause a lot of landslides..
I’ve been living in Madeira since I was nine years old. Every year is fires nothing new. just the Internet and social media works fast!
Devasting. Saw it on the news in Texas. Praying for the island
Still looks like a decent island. It was nice when I visited in august 2015. And im sure it will be nice once it recovers
I agree with you windmills are terrible❤❤❤❤
the president did not know how to manage the situation, he should resign along with his secretary who went on vacation while Madeira was on fire
Sure, but unfortunatelly I don't think that's going to happen.
They will not give up power they have for decades
But they should be voted out of power.@@santostv.
Thank you Lord! Indeed! Things were bad enough, but could have been much worse.

I’m totally agree with you. The windmills definitely is not good idea.

Hello? The nuclear is green. Get on the revised agenda.
@@CarlRodrig research how these windmills are made and how much CO2 is produced! Also research how to recycle the windmills! Brainwashed sheep!

My trip is in early November, you think it will be green when I’m there?
I don't know but it's not burned everywhere. Bit early for green to come back.

They definitely should but the church use them often.
Tal for en trist video.

Madeira turned into a black desert. Not everywhere though. Fortunately
You have to watch Marítimo at their stadium!
where exactly is this viewpoint? 9:14
