As always you make the best reaction vids. Love your humor and humility! It is true, there is no limit to how much fun we can have with the songs that have inspired us. I am always adding stuff that is of my own flavor to the songs I practice to. Adding subdivisions of triplets, modulated rhythmic phrasing and so forth. Thank you Andy for the work you do. About relaxed mouth and relaxed player - a good example happens before that monster fill, about 8 bars leading into it his mouth tenses and locks into a tense position all the way till the fill is over. And I think this is because he was anticipating that fill, and then the fill itself was difficult for him. He nailed it of course and I think he felt much more at ease once he passed it. Anyway, I noticed it because you mentioned it.

Min 12:55 in a recent interview, he has said that in the videos he tries to "do something different", that normally in concerts, he plays as the song asks, he doesn't try to impress with his technique, in concerts he plays like must be the song
El Estepario was playing with the Spanish group SARATOGA, here it is: ua-cam.com/video/ScwU6ALc1hY/v-deo.html.
Of course, maintaining that level throughout a concert also has a lot of merit. During the interview he was humble enough to admit that it took him a lot of work to adapt to that type of music, for example, before playing with SARATOGA he didn't use the double pedal, and he had to learn and get used to playing with the double pedal.
He is very hardworking, in the interview he said that to record a video, he can easily take 100 or 120 shots. A true monster.
Here is part of the interview, in case anyone is curious. You can subtitle it in the English language with the UA-cam translator.

I'm predominantly a bassist and guitarist but I have been known to hit the odd drum or two in the past, I was for the most part a metal and rock musician but my session work took me into various other styles of music.
One thing that I've noticed with Scandinavian music as a whole, whether it be melodic death metal, classic rock or the pop music of ABBA and A-Ha is the beautiful structuring it has, and the room it gives you as a musician to fly around and really change the energy and feel of it.
Equally, sometimes replicating that exact feel, or perhaps we should say "Lagom" can be challenging for us non-Scandi muso's as it is so easy to go flying all over the shop.
My first love is really thrash metal and Swedish Melodic Death Metal yet, when I listen to ABBA or other Swedish and Scandi groups, I cannot help being blown away by the technicalities of the music. It's like cooking with many ingredients but, just a pinch of this, a few grains of that and the merest hint of the other at just the right time to create the perfect dish. Any more, any less and at the wrong time... and the final outcome is just not right.

What he does with a 3-piece kit is something that a lot of people don't point out enough. So many people think they need a 4 or even 5-piece kit with 2 or 3 toms, snare, and bass just to get started or to get past introductions. That's never been true, 3-piece is great to start with and then the challenge of people filling in and changing things up as creative solutions with a minimalistic kit is great. He meets the challenges one-handed while taking a drink. That, along with expressing the importance of practice while not sounding condescending, is what makes him entertaining for me and a good source of inspiration for basically everything out there because you can apply that approach to most everything. For photography, my main hobby, you don't need high end 1 or 2k USD bodies to take great photos, you can get a great starting kit for less than that all combined that people took world-famous shots with.

When it comes to being talented at something, i think its absolutely not a myth. What talent essentially comes down to is: You have much easyer time becoming good at something if you are talented in it, compared to someone who is not.
There are other factors that play a role in it though. One of the big ones is obsessive personality. If you are absolutely obsessed about becoming good at something, you really push yourself to the limit and beyond and you can potentially become better than naturally talented person.
If you get a combination of talent and obsession in a person however... thats where true ''savants'' are born!

Seen most of your vids and you have good taste in drummers. Knowing you like Gavin, I highly recommend reacting to the recent Porcupine Tree - Harridan (In Session, Air Studios). Drumming at it's finest. Keep up the great work.

I am not a drummer as much as a guitarist, but I remember when I was young and only had a few years into playing; I used to make that relaxed face constantly. Over time I became aware of the face and I was embarrassed by it. How would people make fun of me if I did that live. Truly I tried extremely hard to stop doing this, and I actually succeeded. I have since looked back and wished I didn’t. I felt that it looked stupid but truthfully, I looked natural. Like I loved my music, I’m sad I can’t seem to get it back.

Thank you Andrew! That was phenomenal, educ8ing and inspiring for M. Lightning Dube! Thank you. I wonder how many want to quit after seeing those types of vidz!? Hmm... Sometimes it's good to quit and to approach the craft in a different manner!? Hmm....

Something I'd like to add about playing relaxed, in addition to the sound, is you simply can't get to this level of chops without having good, physically sustainable technique.
Firstly because if your muscles don't work together and you lock them up, you'll have a ceiling for how fast you can go, except for small bursts (it's about USING tension, alternating between flex and relax, not the absence of tension).
And then, with the amount of hours you have to put in to be able to do anything close to what this guy can do, you WILL get injured if you don't have sustainable, relaxed technique, sooner or later, and it's much harder to unlearn than to have a good start.

For me personally, I come to reaction videos from a drum teacher to learn more about drums, believe it or not. Any explanations of things I may or may not have an understanding of cannot hurt, only help, because I may not know certain things, such as the number of phrases for things that I have a more in-depth knowledge of from watching you, whereas being a guitarist and bassist primarily I only have a passing knowledge of because it isn't focused on too much as said instrumentalist, is of great help to me. It blows my mind that someone would come specifically to a TEACHER'S corner of UA-cam just to complain that the video should not be stopped. If that is the case, they should watch someone that doesn't have ANY real knowledge of music, if what they want is pure shock factor and nothing more.

@Rooney, you should do a reaction video to his(el Estepario) Bat Country cover by Avenged Sevenfold, it's seriously excellent! I love your reaction videos btw, helps us non drummers learn more about the ins and outs of drumming. Keep up the great work!

The best part about EES is his ability to groove with everything, always so relaxed and never overplays, just flows with the beat. It's magic to watch.
EDIT: @Andrew Rooney Drums I count the fill at 8 bars.

Great drummer. One note: He uses a Yamaha EAD10. So he can miss his hits and "turn it up " later. I would like to hear him in a live session. I'm not putting the guy down, he is a monster! Just the same, I'd like to hear the natural sound an just how well it matches up to the final product.
But, he is making the hits. He is quick. He has been playing drums for years, that's obvious

      How would that be possible?
It's a single mic, it should be really hard to cover up without it being noticeable.
