- People have stopped buying cars because the cost of ownership is too expensive. Car prices are still pretty high, even though they have been coming down, interest rates are too high for people to afford the monthly payments and even if you can afford both of those once you actually own the car, the cost of insurance maintenance and fuel is also too high. So many people are just holding onto their cars until the wheels fall off.

If your going to fall behind on your payments. Here is one of the best ways to handle it. I always have several credit cards that I dont use. They have interest promotions. Like no interest for 2 years on a balance transfer. Pay off the loan with a low or no interest credit card. The payment will probably be lower and you can get cheaper insurance. If all hell breaks loose and you need to default on that, at least they dont take the car. I did this before and paid off the car in even less time before the interest jacked up. Because there was no interest on the CC everything went to principle.

Same, but I maintain them to make them last as long as possible. I'm currently driving a 24 yo car, drives great, and still looks good because I take care of it. I'm not embarrassed at all to drive it, in fact I'm kinda proud of it. No payments, low insurance, no sweat 😊

If you can't afford to pay off a new car in 3 years, you can't afford the car. Ninety percent in this country have been spending beyond their means for decades. You don't NEED most of the things you think you NEED. You only WANT them.

Exactly i dont feel bad for people at all, some ok yes times are tough and it can get anybody, but most people were getting that free money and abusing it. U.S consumers are NOT smart at all then cry when income begins to suffer. I def live within my means and it allows me days off or leaving work early and not suffering, no extravagant loans or mods to my house or car and i can trim the fat to certain assets if need arises. Sure treat yourself to little things, hell yeah, buy that phone, get that game console, those are small debts or even cash purchases, but a whole ass house or car or mods; they dug their own grave

My 1974 Chevy pickup can be fixed with just a wrench, screwdriver, vacuum gauge, and duct tape. And parts are still plentiful and affordable. Forget newer cars
Car insurance is what a car payment used to be and a car payment is what a mortgage payment used to be.
Things change over time. Grandma paid 50 cents haircut. Mom paid $5 haircut. Kid pays $50 haircut. Grandkids will pay $500 haircut.

calculated this once in percentage terms in comparison with my parents. My father was an average earner, my mom did not work at that time. They have 3 kids and rented back then. Out of my Dads wage, 20% of it needed to go to pay the rent every month. Compared to todays prices (average income and rent prices) you have to pay 50% now and can never have wife without work and kids at home.

I recognized early on that vehicles were money pits and never wanted one to do anything other than get me from point A to point B. I still think fancy, expensive cars are for the wealthy and they can have them.
I fix everything, cars and trucks are the worst investment. I have 198k on my 2008 Tacoma and I just fix it when there's issues. I owe nothing on it and it runs good, I know people who have over 200k into vehicles f-in crazy

This is accurate. I went with a 23 hyundai elantra hybrid bc it was the cheapest option for a 2.5hr commute daily. 800 credit score, ended up still almost $600/mo plus insurance over $200/mo..mid you, perfect driving record...plus registration yearly.... Ended up getting a new job 2minutes away and I'm over this car.. I lasted a year and a half with a payment and I'm ready to sell it NOW, and drive my old paid off 2012 hyundai elantra that's parked outside in perfect condition. Never again will I fall for the car payment trap!

What’s different about it today compared to back then? More buttons to push on the dashboard. That truck cost 200% more today than it did 20 years ago. Most peoples income did not go up 200% in the last 20 years. That is the point….

@@handsomeX A 60 year old could have bough a house 35 years ago and paid leas than 50K. But in terms of inflation over 35 years that 50K is now 250 to 300K in relative worth. I bought a house in 1976 for 23K....tax value is now 250K......but everything is basically 10X what it was in 1976. 10K was a median salary that you could afford a car, a house and a stay at home with the kids wife....It was a struggle but could be done. Now you NEED 100 to 125K to do that but it is still a struggle. The only thing that changes over time is the placement of the decimal point.
@bladerunner5810 If you don't mind living in a very small town in the south or the midwest, you can find homes for under 100k. It's not easy, but with some detective work it's totally possible. There are many government auctions where you can bid for homes and vehicles. Like I said, it's not easy, but there are very good deals out here, IF you're willing to live in an off the beaten path, rural area.
I'm boycotting this trend of using smaller engines with turbochargers, auto idle start/stop, and variable cylinder management. All gimmicks that dramatically reduce long term reliability in exchange for a couple extra mpg.

Manufacturers often DO have a low-content base model for promotional purposes. "YOU can own a NEW 2024 for ONLY $____/month!". Then most people see it and want more than that. It's been like that for decades.
You can still order strippped down base models from most manufacturers.
I think the leather isn’t a bad choice option, much more durable than cloth. Safety and environmental standards have added too much cost to vehicles for average folks to have to pay for.

I agree....most vehicles today are gargoyles that, from just a slight distance, in each category, look the same. Wish I still had my 1972 Cadillac Sedan Deville. Dealer sticker of $6100 was pretty steep but even at 10X is still less than most luxury vehicles in relative value today. Lunch at a diner I frequented in that time period was $1.00 which included a tip.....avg income 12K.....avg house 27K....reg gas $.050....
This is why I only buy beaters. No reason to spend $60K on a Lexus when the $1800 Toyota does the same shit except much cheaper, including insurance and registration.
People are going to have to get HANDY again and educate themselves on keeping cars repaired. I bought a 2005 VW Beetle Turbo for $800 on craigslist that purred like a kitten but the clutch was burned out. Bought everything I needed on RockAuto for around $400, followed a UA-cam video on installing a new clutch and it's now an outstanding daily driver and gets terrific fuel mileage.
That's how ya do it. Good work. I bought a '12, FIAT 500 off a used car lot four years ago. The clutch is still hanging in there but I've replaced other wear & tear items. Easy to work on, mostly.
I've never been trained mechanically, but I replaced both wheel hubs with new bearings, my front steering rack, and steering column. Even took the brakes apart and reassembled them. My 2006 Saturn Ion isn't much to look at, but dirt cheap insurance and no car payments is a god send. Those German cars are impressive. My Dad's 06 TDI made it to 672,000kms

I am a farmer. I was quoted $97,000 to replace my 21 year old diesel pickup. i totally rebuilt all its mechanicals for 1/3 that amount and its running strong again. Should be good for another 125,000 mi.
I've said it before; refusal to buy is always the consumer's strongest weapon.

I was a stay at Home mom with no money in my IRA or any savings of my own, which was scary at 53 years of age. Three years ago I got a part time job and save everything I make. I don’t understand how people can afford $70,000+ on trucks and cars. I make 150k and after federal, social security and Medicare tax I net $112k then after health insurance, retirement, and other deductions I’m at $92,000. That’s before mortgage, living expenses, and debt obligations. So even at my high income I wouldn’t dare touch a new vehicle. So how can people with 75k income and lower afford these ??
My wife was saying, “why does everyone else have $, and I don’t”! And I told her because they are negative spending and not saving for retirement! And your saving 20% or more of your income.

long story short , I paid off our debt in our late 30's and 40's ( with a solid plan ) and I said I wanted us to be debt free

I'd say less than a quarter of the people that drive 70K trucks can actually afford it. The net worth rule says your car shouldn't exceed 5% of your total net worth. NO WAY everyone with a 70K car has a net worth with at least 1.4 MILLION. They are using massive portions of their monthly take home on the payment, insurance, and gas. One job loss or emergency situation and they could be screwed.
@@Hunterhunter-ir9nz Sometimes it makes you wonder who’s smarter, spend it all, run up the credit and have nice things, default, file bankruptcy, repeat. Save for retirement, do without, finally get to retirement, social security insolvent, means test reduces or eliminates benefit, wealth tax takes savings to pay for benefits for those that have nothing, so still don’t have nice things.
I work for Honda, we are still selling cars at a good pace but our brand is in demand because they retain their value better than domestic brands and are far more reliable.
Both of my VW diesel cars get better fuel economy than anything Honda makes, or any other Asian import. European diesels are the best buys.

My used Honda Accord has been very reliable and great on gas. The Honda dealer I purchased from kept calling me asking if I wanted to sell it.
Plus you have lower supply compared to other manufacturers. I bought two brand new Hondas for my fleet recently.

The price of new cars has become legalized theft plus the payments $700.00 plus for 84 months plus insurance and in some states the yearly license fees. The car warranty expires and you still have car payments then the repair cost which is barely under a $1000.00 which in most cases has to be put on a credit card and the debt slavery continues on.

I work as a tech at a dealership and im disgusted, sure i make great money, but id sacrifice some of that at the cost of a nice steady stable fair economy, but sadly the world doesnt work as such. I was going to buy the new 2024 Corvette to attract the ladies, but since I am 82 I thought it would be easier to drive my 2015 Honda Odyssey with the windows down and throw out one hundred bills as I drive slowly through town, that would probably work just as well.

You would think demand destruction would drive the prices down. My local gmc dealer had sale listed on their trucks. So I stopped just to look. The one is 70kish with thousands in "extras". A sales man comes out and starts talking to me about the truck. I said. Well for starters I am not paying for all those " extras" he said, then I'm not selling the truck.... they ain't desperate enough yet.

Go to a dealer, take test drives on possible cars you need. When you find the one you like, order the base model through the manufacturer. That right there could save you 10K.
Lots of the markets are being held up by fleet rigs from government intervention.

I drive a 17 year old toyota compact hatchback. Never gave me a major problem. Paint is faded, clearcoat worn off on the roof and hood and sides, but it runs like superman. I know people in their luxury suv's sometimes look at me and sneer, but all I gotta think for them is "just keep up the payments and you'll be allright". Have not considered buying another car, new or used for years. why should i go into debt for prestige or whatever the vibe new car drivers want it? don't make any sense to me.
Don't worry about the sneering people. If you want your car to look better, you could get it painted by a reputable company.

in 2017 when trump was president, I was able to buy a fully loaded Silverado brand new for under 40k the dealership didn't need my tax returns, or proof of a job, my mid 700 credit score and 5k down was good enough to get the job done. after that my payment was $500 a month and interest was 6% on the loan. Nowadays everything has doubled a new truck cost 80k-100k, the monthly payment is at least $1000 a month, and the interest is 10%+. what's crazy to me is when I bring this up to my boomer parents, they act like I'm talking about how things were 25 years ago, no I'm talking about how things were just 5 years ago!

This was going on during Obama's administration before that. One problem was that the Fed kept the rate too low. And people emerged since Covid and want stuff and to travel. Now add a worldwide demand for fuel and corporate greed (driving up prices). Now the bill has come due.
I was in the market for a new smaller truck like a Frontier, Colorado, Tacoma, etc. and I quit looking. Unless the prices come down AT LEAST $10K I'm not a buyer.

Yes there have already been many issues with their batteries. I just heard recently several instances of people having to emergency call police and EMS during the hot humid heat to rescue them because the batteries failed and their doors wouldn't open. They were trapped in their car with the heat. And they aren't practical in the Midwest where there aren't many charging centers.

The American dream has turned into the American nightmare. I’m giving up on America and going to Bali. Taking my former employer pension and renting out my condo and will live on $2000 VERY comfortably. Made 3 trips there so far to do my due diligence. At 50 years old, I see no reason to continue to work 2000 hours per year (86 entire calendar days/nearly 25% of the year) just to get by until I’m eligible for Social Security, which still won’t be enough for me to retire. One of my top reasons for leaving America is because, due to inflation, I am no longer able to be charitable with my money and time. That will all change September 1. My one-way ticket there is only $399 🎊 🎉

I left the USA 12 years ago to work overseas. In a country with mass transit, I haven't needed a car. Mass transit is dirt cheap. No car expenses has made all the difference for me. Imagine if the USA invested in domestic modern mass transit instead of financing foreign wars and destroying foreign countries. Just imagine.

I agree. Every time I travel overseas, I can't believe so many people in the US travel by car. A few months ago, I took a 400-mile train trip to France. The ticket was $37 USD. The trip was a little over 3 hours with stops. By car, it would have been closer to 6 hours.

I am 65 year old. My 10-year-old Subaru with 70k still gets me around (fingers crossed). I was going to buy a new Hyundia truck Santa Cruz because I want a small pickup, but the dealers are still demanding ridicules prices. I checked insurance rates for truck, and they are crazy high. I think if my subaru breaks, I will buy one of those electric bikes for $1 to 2k and try that for awhile and call uber if it is an emergency or cross town.

Most Subarus go to at least 100,000 miles before the head gasket blows. Make sure you change the oil and filter religiously and it will treat you well for several more years!

They have 200 quid & want to finance the rest. Broke.,
"Normal People" used want finance on 5k cars - they'd stump up for 1500-2k cars no problem. Now they can't - they want to, but can't. They want to finance them. That's scary. That's "Real World" car-money stuff - what can they pay in cash? Seeing some schmoe roll off in a fully financed 30-60k car is meaningless - that's a loan they ain't paying back, nothing more. Another problem for the Banks. If I was a masochist, I could agree to finance on those 2k cars - take the 200 deposit, let them drive off. Inflation has hit here pretty bad along with the rest of the country. You can't survive in this state off of 25/hr.- rent is easily 1.5k for somewhere in a hood!

No payments is awesome! I cheated and pulled a HELOC loan and consolidated my debt, bought a 06 4runner for $8500. Still paying that damn loan but its only $165 a month vs like $500 scattered about on different accounts. I couldnt imagine owing hundreds to one depreciating asset. People need to also realize the mechanics are baiting people into believing they need all kinds of things done to their cars. They are out to get their share of money with all these businesses trying to stay in business. I’ve been going through this since 2020. Every one I bring it to say I need to replace the catalytic converter and I know that it’s the O2 sensor that needs replacing. I have a code reader. I get mad and tell them don’t touch it. They want to take my Highlander converter off and get the money out of it for scrap and replace it with China junk. I use catalytic cleaner every other month. Another one says my swing arms needs replacing, about $2,500 job. Go somewhere else, they say it’s fine, but THEY find something else. Had a complete tune up last year had all my spark plugs replaced and 6 months later coil is cracked, because spark plug was loose, or so they said as they bring it out and show me. I keep track of everything on my car, because I don’t want a new one. My car runs fine, just hope I don’t get into any accidents. 😮
My Outback is known to kick a P0420 code occasionally which is catalytic converter. I will fill the car with premium and take it for a highway drive and romp on it a little bit. Get it nice and hot and hope it clears buildup. Clear the code and think nothing of it. Was taught this trick by a very good mechanic.

I work with a guy who used to sell cars, he said those administrative fees cost them about $10. He also said they are absolutely negotiable. He said most people overlook them, but if people would see them at around 400, $500 and complained, he said they would drop them down to as low as 50 bucks once in a great while because people would literally walk out on the sale because of it. Total scam!

No, it's not. Make sure the battery has been cared for properly and make sure that you can charge on 220 volts at home. EVs work well for many people, just not all people all of the time.

Even keeping a 15 year old car running is thru the roof. $800 to put a new starter in my car because the more affordable rebuilt ones are not reliable. But still better than a car payment. 203K miles on it and trying for at least 300K.
Rebuild the original starter with $20 of new brushes. That’s what I did on my old 4Runner, very easy to do.
Too high. Google the repair next time or get a Haynes repair manual. Starters are very easy with like 2 or 3 bolts and less than 100$
Drove mine until the wheels fell off. 24yrs hand crank windows, 5 speed. It helped my finances so much not to have any car payments and little repairs. Highly recommend.
I got sick of all the crap missing from my base model 90s 5 speed Toyota so I went to a junkyard and got everything I needed to add in power windows, AC, tilt column, power locks and found a low mile interior. I didn’t find any rust when I took it all apart to do all that so this thing is solid as a rock! I’m planning on driving this thing forever. For anyone dealing with brittle 90s plastic, if you can get it apart intact paint the backside with a bucket of flex-seal! I did my whole dash and all the trim so that it’ll last much longer. Old plastic is a pain in the ass!
One repo will ruin your life. They will sell it and make $5000 , send you a bill for $5000, bad credit, no one will ever loan you a dollar again.
BS. I have had 2 cars repoed when I was younger and now have an 860 credit score and multiple mortgages. I can borrow whatever I want but I choose to keep my debt confined just to my real estate. Your credit will recover over time and if you are going to be stupid with your finances at least do it when you are young so you have time to rebuild it.
Some credit cards on autopay will help you fix your credit. Don’t carry a balance but buy everything with a credit card.
