  • Here's my review of the new Datacolor SpyderX Elite monitor calibration system. I've been calibrating my monitors, teaching color management classes and running professional printing workshops since about 2003 and will say that Datacolor's new SpyderX system is excellent.
    In this review, I show:
    - How to calibrate your monitor
    - How to setup the software
    - Using the SpiderX Utility
    - Calibrating multiple monitors
SpyderX Info from Datacolor - spyderx.dataco...

Thanks for this clear review and demo. I’ve been wanting to calibrate my iMac 27 Retina and you’ve convinced me. Just ordered the SpyderX Pro from Amazon.

I like how this came across as an objective review. Some others obviously have a bias because they were paid to make their reviews.

Love the Spider, I think I started with the Spider 2. It gives a much more pleasant color/brightness/contrast feeling when working a long time every day. Also I have 3 monitors from different companies and they are all different but with the calibration they look alike but not completely the same as it caused by the limitation of each monitor (as mentioned in the video). The best is it works on Linux as well (not Datacolors own software but I use DisplayCAL and it's just as good as the Datacolor software)

Do I really need the Elite? I'm thinking the Pro may work just as well for my purposes. I just purchased two 4k monitors and want consistency to my print house.

Hi Mike You mentioned that you need to calibrate the monitor with the Spyder x elite in the room you are going to edit. My question is I go on workshops and edit my images in various places. I use a MacBook Pro. It is the computer that I do all my editing on. How do I work with making sure my monitor is calibrated properly? I appreciate this review and just subscribed.

@@justinflownow There will be some noticeable differences between the spyder 5 and the spyder X. The spyder X is overall a faster meter. So when taking measurements especially on darker tones the new meter will be much faster. The accuracy will be a tad bit better. But the biggest difference is in the sealed lens in the sypder X. The older 5 did not have a sealed lens and over time ie a few years the spyder 5 will tend to drift and loose accuracy. The new X has a sealed lens that is less apt to drift substantially over the same period of time.

I have a MacBook Pro laptop, which comes with 4 Thunderbolt 3 conncections.. I use a hub to connect USB type devices. I see that we are suppose to plug DIRECTLY into the computer and NOT use a hub. IF I purchase a SpyderX Elite, how do I handle that? Will it provide an inferior reading if I use a hub? Thanks..

I'm intrigued if this will be better than my current calibrator, the i1Display Pro from X-Rite. One thing I noticed is that the hardware on this looks much more cheaply made/designed than the X-Rite one; it doesn't even cling easily to a vertical monitor. Or maybe it's much better in real life than on review video.

What was selectred in imacs own color profile(Systems preferences /Display /Color /Display profile) before or after calibration? Does imac own color profiles have any effect on screen after calibrating by spyderx?

I've had the Spyder 5 Pro for about 3 years. Each time I use it it makes my monitor color look really yellow unless I use it with DisplayCal, then its perfect.
I just purchased the $2,000 BenQ sw321C a few days ago and used the Datacolor Spyder5 pro colorimeter and the results are the same. Yellow cast all over screen. Im fed up.. just bought X1 Display Pro. Hopefully I get better results.

Complete rip off product that survives due to ignorance is bliss. When I hear him say "My monitor is calibrated" after ONE thing - a brightness check. Video calibration is real stuff and toys like this really do damage to it. What people don't know they are missing is all of the actual important calibrations. There is a reason Sencore calibration tools were so expensive - when you see that nice triangle showing your monitors color range - Sencore steps in and continues with color calibration - the exact thing I thought I was getting with Spyder. Sencore will show you the color accurate triangle, it will show you your triangle, how your RGB is off, and then you slowly adjust each color to move it into the accurate location. That is calibrated to a standard. Spyder is like those cheap DVDs you'd buy that came with the little translucent colored plastic strip you would have to hold over your eye and adjust till one box blended into another box - the whole POINT of a calibration tool is that the tool is supposed to now do that. Spyder threw me a blue box on both my monitors that looked miles apart after the one dinky brightness setting - and then wanted ME to drag RGBP and Gamma sliders around till "I think" the colors match. One - I couldn't do it - no setting on any slider got me remotely near common colors - and Two - it's supposed to tell ME if I need to raise or lower a color, why is it asking ME? If you have the Sencore you realize there is a whole nother world of calibration - the Sencore will tell you exactly what to do with each color - and will go well beyond primary colors if the technicians menu of the display gives you access. I can't begin to convey how little the Spyder really does but I can try with an audio analogy as usually people big into video appreciate audio as well. Spyder is like a surround system with an equalizer that only adjusts 4 frequencies - and with 4 frequency adjustments you simply won't be able to correct some things. At a minimum you'd expect 8 - and Sencore would be like an EQ with 64 adjustments, an entire mixer board. I will be returning it (I just got it today so my review is fresh) but after using it I can say at $260 it did no better than I could do with the old $15 calibration DVD and plastic strip - the mere fact that a tool that is supposed to be calibrating to "some standard" is asking me to eyeball it feels ... I dunno insulting from a calibration device.

The Spyder X Elite is only worth buying if you have a front digital projector otherwise you only need the pro purchase. Its the software that makes the difference not the Spyder itself. The pro version is not compatible with a projector only the elite version which is the actual software that comes with it. I for one have a front projector made by JVC and you can use their auto cal software with the pro and can get a lot closer to achieving a better result with it. The JVC's auto cal software for projectors is way better but a lot more complex.Friends of mine have used the older spyder 5 express with the JVC software and have got fantastic results with front projectors.

What about the soft proofing feature? is there no point? i'm trying to get a calibrator for colour accuracy so that if i print i'm seeing the colours that will come out , but then they say on their website the elite is the only version with SoftProof, i thought all calibrators will calibrate you display for colour accuracy or am i misunderstanding what SoftProof is?
