  • If you take your photography seriously then you should have a calibrated screen. If you haven't then you need to stop putting it off, because it is 100% necessary.
    In this video I show you how to calibrate a computer screen from beginning to finish, and I also show you how to do so on a multiple monitor set up. But before I get into that I tell you why you should in the first place.
    If you are interested in picking up a Datacolor SpyderX Pro then check out the link below.

      Thanks David. And depending upon your requirements, Datacolor also make a colour checker (data color chekr - is how the product is spelt) will allow you to colour match images and footage from multiple cameras that have different profiles etc. So if that is a requirement, rather than simply viewing the correct exposure and colours on your screen then that is the tool that you require for that. I often mix footage from a Canon and Sony in the same video and they don’t always work well together even when grading footage with the same LUT. I managed to get a photo from an iPhone, a canon and a sony to look the same (in terms of colour and exposure) using the colour checker.

      It’s annoying, but that is hardware isn’t it. Once it gets to a certain age, new releases of OS don’t support them. It keeps us spending.
      I couldn’t tell you how much difference the results were between my screen calibrated with the spyder 3 pro and the new Spyder X Pro, but I would like to think that there is an improvement. The product itself is much better designed, the software hasn’t evolved too much - but it works just fine.

      I just had to google this, by X-rite correct? Knowing Apple I didn’t think that they would allow an app to tamper with the workings of the inner engine. Either way I think iPads are pretty well calibrated, but of course the brightness just adapts to your surroundings, or a percentage. But more and more people are editing their photos and video on an iPad (now that adobe are supporting this platform). So calibration on those devices is required.

      Hi Kara, I have my work laptop calibrated, which is running the latest windows - so no compatibility issues there. If I remember correctly, the software is downloaded from data Color’s website, and you then enter the serial number that comes in the box. Therefore Datacolor update the download to suit the ever changing windows updates. If you are having further issues I would contact their technical team.

    I had a Color Munki, but just wasn't satisfied with the results. I first heard about Spyder from Jared Polin. I figured that I would watch your video as part of research since my son now likes to take my phone, which is what I used to try and judge how the raw photo turned out. More recently, I used Adobe Lightroom 6 on my computer and always hated the way the portrait profile looked. My wife's computer does not have Adobe Lightroom, yet the portrait profile looked more natural than the unflattering pink my monitor displayed. So I wonder if the SpyderX calibrator will help in that regard.

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography  3 роки тому

      Hello, thanks for your question. The monitor calibration process is not program specific, so it will certainly help photoshop, lightroom or even watching UA-cam on your computer. If you want to get even more colour accuracy then you can use a grey card and or a colour checker (the colour grid that you will have seen portrait photographers photographing their models with). You then import that into light room and even colour match different cameras. The Spyder X that I reviewed is the model that I would recommend. It did drop in price in the new year, but it seems to have gone up again?!?

I have calibrated many laptop screens over the years, what you will find is that the technology in a laptop screen will nowadays be different to external monitors and it is challenging to get them to exactly match unless you spend a lot of money on an external monitor.

One quick question, for monitors with hardware calibration support, do you recommend using spyder's own software or the manufacturers' hardware calibration softwares (e.g. ASUS's proart calibration and BenQ's Palette Master Element). • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography  Рік тому

      Hello. This is an integrating question that I don’t think I have been asked before. As far as I am aware, when calibrating the screens you have the choice of ‘laptop’ or ‘monitor’ and then you will be asked what settings your monitor has for controlling the contrast, brightness, saturation etc. I have never tried it, so I don’t want to say no, but does the TV remember all of the settings that would be ‘pushed’ by the computer everytime you switch them on? My TV takes time to warm up and then it has annoying features that change the brightness based upon what you are watching, and the colours are very saturated. If you have a high end TV then you may get great results, but my instinct tells me that you would get a better more accurate result with a dedicated monitor.

    How do you trust theese things? 200, isn´t that a bit bright? What if you edit a moody dark forest picture and post it, it will be too dark, because of the brightness being too high. • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography  3 роки тому

      Hi Kim, I have calibrated three of my screens in the same ambient lighting and I am happy with the results I am getting. I check them on my iPhone and iPad before I share them online and publish them on my website. Try using a test chart which has a range rather than using a photograph and if your pure black isn’t black and the time one before pure white is ‘over exposed’ then you will need to recalibrate it. I haven’t made a video about it yet - but I will be running some tests using the color chekr and lightroom/premiere. But this does require the extra step of taking a photo or video clip of your scene with the colour chart in the frame. But then you can be even more confident in the exposure and colour accuracy. I hope this helps!

      @@baronbarbaron thank you for replying. Having calibrated maybe 5+ different monitors with the spyder X and older versions (as I showed in the video) any colour casts are either caused by the ambient light reading or the screen itself. And there are too many variables to sort out in the comments section of a YT video. But when I ran into an issue of slight colour casts (as I was using two screens butting against one another) I ran the calibration again making sure that the ambient light (which was a tungsten light) was not influencing the reading too much as it would try and compensate and you will be up with a colour cast. Start DisplayCAL, go to Tools > Instrument > Install ArgyllCMS instrument drivers... This will ensure your SpyderX is recognised by DisplayCAL. Now you’re good to start calibrating with DisplayCAL. HI ben! Great video. I've just bought an Asus AMD Vivobook Ryzen 5 5600H with Radeon Graphics 3.30 GHz. Out of the box, the colour saturation of the screen was insane! It's so rich. 'Blues' are super saturated, and reds and orange are way off! To alleviate this, I have had to set the AMD software to 9400K!! And set saturation down to 57 from a middle point of 100. This sounds crazy to me, but it's the only way I can get photos that were processed on an older Asus laptop to look about right. I have done several real estate shoots since with the new laptop. I have had to continually adjust the AMD panel to get things as close as I can, but I am simply NOT happy with the results. None of the colours look right. I am a member of Flickr, and all my photos look better on my old 6-year Asus than the new one. So, I was about to purchase the SpyderX Pro, but found your video first. Given the above, what colour temperature would I start with when attempting to use the Spyder? And why are the default colours of my laptop the way they are? Hi Robert. Thanks for leaving the comment and question. I will caveat my response with, I am not an expert at this - I have calibrated about ten screens over the years, some new, some old, some laptop screens and others external monitors and I have achieved accurate results.
      When I was going through the calibration process I contacted Spyders technical team and I said that I want to match two screens that are sitting next to one another, but they are different brands and different generations. They responded, quite rightly, to say that they will never be exactly the same due to the capabilities of each screen. At work I have a brand new laptop that has a beautiful screen, vivid colours and capable of HDR. Ultra sharp 4k. This looks significantly better than the external monitor that I use with the laptop, even though this is a much more expensive 4k curved monitor. The fact is that these are completely different technologies and they won’t look the same. Intend to use my iPhone and iPad as a good gauge for which if my monitors are best calibrated once I have edited my images.
      Anyway, your question about white balance I don’t have an answer for but I do have advice. Sort out the ambient light colour first. If you have any tungsten lights at your desk switch then off. Calibrate the screen during the day when there is natural light coming into the space but no direct light on your workstation. The calibration software will find a white point and a black point and recommend the colour temperature. From all of the calibrations I have ever done, the results have been a tweak to what the screens look like - it’s never been a radical change.
      I hope this helps. A long answer.

      @@benharveyphotography Thank you, Ben for your reply. I already follow the suggestions that you made in regard to general lighting conditions. I live in southern Spain, so we have a lot of bright and sunny days, so I'm careful with direct sunlight into the room. My property faces north, east and west, so don't have too much of a problem. I work only mornings and early afternoons. I'll go ahead with buying the Spyder, and I'll let you know how I get on. I'll also try and calibrate my old laptop and see how that comes out. Thanks again.

    hello, can it be done with a projector?
    i feel that plugging a computer on a projector will bias the results because we're calibrating the laptop instead of the real source of the projector (blu ray, android box...)

      Hello, I have not tried it with a projector - so I cannot comment on how that will work. Sorry. Hopefully you find the answers from someone else that has tried it, it is quite a niche requirement.

      absolutely, i discovered recently that buying a projector is more a beginning than an end in itself
      there are few to no professional around to do calibrate it
      and they charge you a lot.
      only one vid exist describing the process
      in german
      a niche, indeed
      thank you for your interesting vid, though

    I have two 43 wide screens stacked, one is more on white side and another on the yellow tint, I was unable to get them to look the same, Ben silly question but would this calibration make my screen at the end exactly the same, brightness, color, etc? I know the silly question but wanted to know before i buy this.

      Hi Martin, since making this video I have purchased two of the Ultrasharp Dells and they now sit side by side essentially creating one Uber-wide screen. I have calibrated these and they are exactly the same. However my third screen which is a 4k sharp monitor is not exactly the same because they have different technology/capabilities and therefore the Spyder is not able to match them exactly. In summary, if the screens are the same, yes you can match them, if they are different brands and/or spec then you can get them close but not exactly the same. This is going to be the same whichever screen calibration device you use.

    This video is 2 years old so not sure if it's applicable anymore. Im trying to do this with 2 LG monitors and one keeps coming out with a red color cast and the other green. Both of yours I'm assuming looked fine?

      Hi David, they datacolour Spyder pro hasn’t been updated (as a product) yet, so this video is still very relevant. I have not encountered any significant issues like you are describing. I have had slight off calibrations and re-run the software to tweak it which turned out to be an issue with the ambient lighting anyway. I would simplify things to figure out what the issue is. Unplug one of the screens and calibrate just one of them first. If that doesn’t work then resolve that before multiple screens. Check the spec of your monitor and what colour space it uses and make sure that you match it with the calibration options. Make sure that you don’t have any string coloured lights in the room; as this is the only reason that I can see would cause such a colour cast in your calibration. See if you can restore the defaults on your screen menu if this still doesn’t resolve the issue. If you have another device, such as a work laptop, try to calibrate that to rule out there being an issue with the Spyder pro itself. Good luck!

    Hi Ben, good to meet you. I am able to find plenty of information on the X version, but struggling to find information on if there is any significant performance upgrade between my spyder 4 to the X. Where is struggle most is printing accuracy to my screen, I've done everything like kill off screen brightness to below recommended levels but still my prints come out darker than screen (store or home printed both). I don't want to buy a printer calibrator as they are extremely expensive and I don't really print enough to justify the costs, but I would at least like the screen to convey similar results. There is a promo on the X right now, expires tonight. Very interested to hear your thoughts.

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography  2 роки тому

      Hi Marco, sorry for the delayed response - I am flat out with work. That promo has obviously passed now. I think I went from the Pro 3 to the X, as the older versions were no longer supported by newer versions of windows (which was annoying). Introducing printing adds another layer of complexity and variables, and you have to ideally trial and error each elect to see where the issue is. Because it may be your printer settings/ink/printing medium and not your screen. Do you have a JPEG/TIFF file that you have printed previously and it has come out perfectly on that printer? If so you could try and print it again, and regardless of what the screen shows you it should print OK. However if it does not then it could be the calibration of your screen and/or the printer. As I mentioned in the video, I tend to use my iPhone and iPad as a check on the final images to make sure that the calibration of my PC screens is good. Can you do that to figure out if it is the screen or the printer?

    Is there any way to manually adjust color temperature? I calibrated a few times in pitch black conditions and I keep getting a green tint, but after swapping to an sRGB color profile the green tint goes away along with Spyder's profile, but the display is still far too yellow and not neutral and I've been ripping my hair out for days trying to figure out how to get neutral whites. My monitor does not have any settings other than brightness. Also is there a way to reset the Spyder calibration to uncalibrated? I thought it would just make a color profile but it seems to have put a layer beyond it and I can't find any info on how to reset it other than resetting my entire computer to factory settings which I am unwilling to do....

      Hello. I have mentioned in a few of the comments previously that each case has quite a few variables. Some screens will have a slight colour cast to start with but it sounds like it is obvious. Can you recalibrate without any ambient light falling in the spyder as that will create the colour cast. If this does not resolve your issue I would suggest getting in touch with Data Color help desk as they were very responsive when I made contact with them.

      Hi Steven, I haven’t tried calibrating a TV although I have connected a laptop to a Tv before. You might have to ask their technical team how it will work out. The calibration and sounder device will still be plugged into your computer anyhow, it just depends if the computer talks to tge Tv in the same way that it does a computer monitor. For example changing the display colours rather than just saturation or brightness. I am not sure if Tv’s need to warm up a bit etc. Sorry I couldn’t give you a straight answer.

    • @benharveyphotography

      Hi Claudiu, I would just be careful about compatibility because my 3 doesn’t seem to work on windows 10. For that reason I would but the latest version (the X) so that I will remain compatible for longer. The 5 was released in 2015 so it is already five years old and there is only about £20 difference on amazon.

    Hey Ben, shouldn't I measure the monitor white point first and then set this value in the process of calibration? Because not all monitors have white point at 6500K. I also set brightness to 120 Cd, should it be better 200? Thanks for advice! :-)

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography  3 роки тому

      Hi Tony, the software takes you through the process of calibration, which it does a few tests and then sets the white point before running the blacks and colours. I can’t comments on which CD value is correct for your work station and environment because that is based upon the ambient reading and your particular screen etc. I would suggest running the software and if you are not happy with the results or you think that they aren’t correct get in touch with Datacolor technical support. I tend to check the images on an iPhone and iPad as they are fairly well calibrated straight out of the box.

      Hi Aji, if you are referring to the white balance of the screen (and not the photos in lightroom etc) I left that to the device during its ambient meter reading and calibration process. I will be creating a follow up video with the Color Chekr soon, which further control regardless of which camera/device settings you are shooting with.
