I like how this scene shows us a lot about the main character. We learn that despite his status as a violent, wanted mercenary, he's also quite sophisticated. He's friendly with his neighbours, he knows how to cook, he likes to drink red wine, he believes in God, and most importantly, he keeps his word.

I agree. I love this scene, too since I first saw this movie, this is the scene that most strikes with me. It looks delicious actually. Notice he didn't really do too much to prepare it. He just cut off some portions of the rabbit, tossed them on the cooking oil with the pan, added some chopped onions and a little bit of wine. I've cooked with red wine before and it gives meat a delicious tender taste to it.
Also how he prays before eating. He’s a killer but deep down he believes in God.

Movie was solid. I'm surprised none one talks about this movie. Great story, decent acting, awesome set pieces and world building. Vin is very underated in most of his Sci fi flicks. He would of been perfect casting in Book Of Eli with Denzel.

Vin Diesel gets pigeonholed a lot because of the bland cut'n'paste films that are mega hits but he's made some cracking sci-fi that shows his dedication to the genre. Wish we had more actors like him that took risks on stories they love.
He's got low range, but within his range he's great. Sadly he tends to movies with scripts that need more help than he can provide. Hand him a decent script, and he knocks it out of the park, ala pitch black.
It was a cool scene to watch but no way in hell would he of been walking out of the place alive after shooting that guy.

The first hour is really fucking good, then it gets shit when they get to america and the ending is a little underwhelming.

It lacked a good emotional hook. The setting and world building were the main high points. The plot didn't !I've because of the main character, the plot happened to the main character. It makes movies less impactful.

My only issue with the scene is when he gets his bag he slings it over his shoulder. Cut to the next scene of him walking out into the hallway, and he's holding it by his leg. Then in the hallway it's back on his shoulder.

I own this on DVD, its a very good film, the first half and world building is imnense, some of the best in modern Sci-fi.
The film however changes pace entirely and drops off a cliff as soon as they arrive in the US - the last 30minutes is awful.

Call me crazy, but that movie was really good. Diesel in his prime was a great actor, before all that Fast and Furious nonsense.

If only this film had been less convoluted. Vin Diesel was never better. In fact this may have been his last attempt at real acting. He looks like a genuine hard bitten mercenary savage and acts appropriately. Instead of continuing to challenge himself he's become a sad caricature, always playing the same part in a string of forgettable movies. But hey, he's rich so who gives a fuck, right! I think he will, one day, maybe when he's 70.

lol that's the flimsiest door lock I've ever seen. A thick bike lock with some thin metal loops with exposed screws. Could probably pull the loops out by hand.
all it is is an indicator that the room within is probably secure. if it's removed, it is a clear indicator that he was burgled, and while it is relatively easy to bypass, putting it back after it has been broken is damned near impossible.

Sometimes this is frequency illusion, sometimes it is not. I wanted to like this as a cyberpunk film, but it's so disjointed it's hard to appreciate the way you can something equally bad, like Johnny Mnemonic. The intro absolutely crushes, but by the time you get to this scene, the movie is already silly. The soundtrack, the "Amateurs" line, the ridiculous BMP. It has the same tongue-in-cheek silliness of Fifth Element and other French cinema in a dead-serious setting that absolutely does not call for it. Thanks for reading my blog post, I'll disappear into the internet now.

Lacked a trilogy. This could’ve been a perfect first film for something depending which direction they would take it after this. If it was always intended to be a standalone, it should’ve been (at most) like 1 & half hour longer and with more depth to it. It was good though.
