the pak 40 is effective at range of 1,800 m(1969 yd ) against most types of Allied tanks, including the Soviet T-34 and American Sherman. The weapon, along with the famous 88 mm, was considered one of the best anti-tank guns of the war.
I was trained as antitank guner , I could say from this position , well hidden antitank gun has excellent chances to knock out 1-2 tanks. This scene is completely hollywood style :)
yeah, i think that they should have started with more tanks in the beginning of the movie so that they can be realistically whittled down. I get they wanted to show the power of the Tiger by having it destroy 3 of the 4 in the column and ramp up movie tension, but the filmmakers could have gotten the same result if they started with 6 tanks and lost 2 in this skirmish. Better yet, start with 7 and lose another one in the town
Well, you work with what you got, and that tree line would have been very crowded if the infantry protecting the PAKs also had its positions there. You work with the space and terrain that’s there.
In my opinion, Fury does a REALLY good job of depicting what it was like to be a tanker in WW2. They do a really good job of showing what it was like to live that life, how you can just die without warning, have friends that are there one minute, gone the next, and showing the camaraderie that existed between tank crew members. That is what I feel Fury did really well. Unfortunately the combat scenes are very unrealistic, which is really unfortunate considering the potential the movie had, especially since it was using all real tanks, including the last fully functioning Tiger in the world, which has never been done before. I still love it, and still think it’s the best WW2 tank movie out there, but damn I wish it was more historically accurate.
One thing a lot of people Miss is that the Sherman's intended role was for what they're showing here. Taking out Machine Gun Nest and hardened positions. It was not intended to go toe-to-toe in tank battle. A lot of infantrymen came home because the Sherman did its job. And, especially after the wet ammo innovation, tank crew deaths were a fraction of infantry deaths. In many cases, the tank was disabled and the crew escaped and the tank was recovered and put back into service after repairs. It's very dramatic to show a Tiger tank in a defensive location destroying a tank and killing all the crew but it's not the reality.
So I thought I should look it up since my memory is fuzzy and here's the quote "For the US they were incredibly low - 8% of tankers were killed vs 18% of Rifleman. Only 1581 American tankers were killed in all of WW2 - All types of tanks, in all theatres - Adjutant General's Report. 1/3 of those weren't even in the tanks when they died."
@@macmcleod1188 Yeah that’s true 100%, something that I indeed forgot to mention. Sherman was one of the best infantry support tanks, and this scene in specific does do a good job of showing it
They missed 4 tanks who were making random evasive turns whilst returning fire, and they nearly killed em a few times, including one dead on ricochet. Not really a fantasy movie, just battlefield tactics. Granted, no one complained when we were saving them from the nazis. Now the King Tiger battle later on is where the movie jumped the shark
You also have to remember this is at a later stage in the war, so the German Army is starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel in terms of manpower, plus all the experienced troops are over on the eastern front fighting the Russians, so the ones fighting the allies are either young and poorly trained, or simply not as battle hardened. In fact, after the victory over France, Western Europe became pretty much a relaxation location for German soldiers and officers, being assigned to duty in Western Europe before D-day was living the high life for a German soldier and/or officer, while the Eastern front became very much every soldier’s worst nightmare, to the point that such an assignment was seen and used, as a punishment.
American boys' accuracy +100, nazis accuracy -100, all hits missed the targets, even bazzoka guy had to pray a bit before shooting so he scored his own death with a head squashed.
I love the tone and intensity of this film, however, even historical accuracy aside, if the combat scenes were half-way plausible, Fury could be remembered as a great war film. It's a shame. I still like it though.
@@chocolat-kun8689 this was towards the end of the war. The German War machine had been thoroughly crippled by this point. These were mop up operations.

However, on rewatching the clip it looked like it hit the side of the tank, which I would expect to cause a ricochet. However, this raises another problem... why would hitting the side of a tank cause it to ricochet upward?

That kid is getting people killed while hiding in tank. He will either grow a pair after getting his hair parted or he won't get back in the tank and maybe his replacement will do the job. He is the weakest link.
The one thing I never understood about this movie was why they'd use the kid as a substitute tank crewman. Sure he's a replacement and yeah maybe they were short on them but he was only technically combat arms, he was a bloody clerk. Surely throwing in anyone from an attached infantry unit would've been better.
The new guys always get replaced in spots they need to fill, that's just how war goes, only the elites get that special treatment to get the best units
You don’t pull from infantry, they have their own jobs where they work in close teams. Clerks and admins, however, make perfect combat replacements. In Iraq, my 4th turret gunner was a random bulk fueler we snagged on a resupply. In Afghanistan, the mechanics got voluntold to replace my dismounts until replacements arrived. They tried to give me cooks but I didn’t want those retards in my truck.
Happened all the time in ww2. Tanks had to keep advancing into the fight. It was a numbers game. Training in the field was three shots in practice and congratulations your a new tank crew member. Lord have mercy.
My boat crew had a diesel mechanic that served in the sandbox. Submarine diesel generator, diesel truck engine... close enough. Better yet, one of the othe vets at the fire dept was a Medical Equipment Technician...did a tour in Iraq, pulling patrols with the infantry.
How bad this movie really is, the tanks would never got out of their cover of the hedge and advance to the treelinie. They would have stayed there and blasted the treelinie with everything they got, or called in an airstrike like in a Bridge to far. The infantry would never advanced like that with the tanks, standing behind a tank makes you a target for enemy fire especially if you know that they have anti tank guns. Band of brother shows how infantry would advance. The Germans also are portrayed pretty bad, they are entrenched in a good position, easily killed of a column of American vehicles, and now a machine gun would open fire on a tank before the PAK? Or they would just shoot on the tank not on the infantry behind it or the tank commanders and extra machine gunner standing on top of the tank? Pls just fire any „military“ or „historic“ consultant on this movie and never ever employ him in anything other than a fantastic flick.
This scene is EXACTLY how infantry and tanks worked together to assault across a large open area. UA-cam is full of actual documentary footage of tanks and grunts working together like this. Also, it's a myth that the US had so much air and artillery always available that they could just blow up every bush that might have a Nazi hiding in it.
**Panzerfaust appears** Brad Pitt: Panzerfau ! Gordo: Hey! Get hit, get him ! Machine: I'm loading the gun !!! I even brought a cake, others only brought potato chips and cheap soda, his loss I suppose... I should probably call Helga and tell her not to bake that... **gets shot**
... Shermans* (plural, no apostrophe) ... And Germans had been fighting for more than five years. This is set in March/April 1945, WW2 started September 1939. The first encounter between Germans and Americans didn't happen before early 1942, so they had fought each other for about three years at the time this scene is set.
None of the tanks in the platoon survives the movie, and only one crewman. Is 96% KIA too high a casualty rate to be "realistic" for you? It's perfectly OK to begin with one fight where US tankers win-they must have won a few, since the Germans lost the war-and part of the purpose of this scene is to illustrate for the viewer how WW2 tanks were supposed to function in support of attacking infantry. The scales and distances are too small and short, but those are the limitations of moviemaking.
The men who had been fighting for 4 years are gone. By this time Germany is fighting with people who have little to no combat experience and Volksstrum.
The average crew of a 7.5cm Pak 40 anti-tank gun could send a shell every 5 seconds (approx.) and had a somewhat good accuracy within 2000 yards (approx.) and a maximum engagement range of 8000 yards (approx.). With a total weight of 1.4 tons the Pak 40 was also pretty heavy and couldn't be manhandled into position, so they were deployed by tractors (usually half-tracks) on an open area further away from the front line and definitively not inside a densely packed tree line.
That's the kind of fact that you often don't see even in RTS video game like Company of Heroes. Some military hardware at that time require extensive motorization like getting towed. Men of War come to close, but that game got the reputation of being too niche and less casual. It's just very difficult to get used to.
2 years late... but that could describe pretty much all scenes in the movie... Especially the last stand against 100+ soldiers in a tank that cant move.

My Dad was in the 4th Armored Division, CCA as a Tanker from the Breakout , Bastonge and the 'Rat Race' to the very end. NO WAY those Kraut Anti-Tank guns could miss like that at 200 yards or less. Dad said they were accurate as all get out and ALWAYS had their ranges marked. The Kraut guns were so high velocity and with such tough armor piercing tips, they would not deflect off a Sherman at that range.... Dad said in the whole war he only saw one Kraut round deflect.. Upon returning to the rally point, we learn that Fury is the only tank in their section that didn't get blown to hell. A crewman in another tank who they seem to know is so overcome with fear and shock at the carnage he has witnessed that he blows his own hand off with a grenade to get out of getting sent back into combat (though that was edited out ofthe final cut).
As Fury rolls through the camp, trucks are loaded with dead soldiers. Nurses and corpsmen are dumping buckets of blood and used bandages outside a field hospital.
The new guy's first job: sponge the blood and skin of the aforementioned dead crewman out of his crew station.
Shortly after rolling out, the lead tank in the column cobbled together from the remnants of the otherwise wiped-out battalion gets hit with a Panzerfaust. The crew dies screaming, trapped inside the tank as it's engulfed in flames. Save for the TC, who managed to clamber out of the turret, fall to the ground, and spare himself any further agony by pulling a bullet through his own head.
AAAAAAAND that just about covers the first 20 minutes.
Agree completely.
So I thought I should look it up since my memory is fuzzy and here's the quote
"For the US they were incredibly low - 8% of tankers were killed vs 18% of Rifleman. Only 1581 American tankers were killed in all of WW2 - All types of tanks, in all theatres - Adjutant General's Report. 1/3 of those weren't even in the tanks when they died."

These scenes were filmed at Shirburn Watlington Oxfordshire. I was working as a telecoms engineer in this area and had never seen a large film production on this scale . I was amazed at the amount of temporary buildings and hundreds of people all involved in this film. It’s something I’ll never forget. Saying "Shoot at the nazis!" is completely stupid.
Nazi is an abbreviation for National Socialist and refers to a member of the NSDAP (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei / national socialist german worker's party).

Advance, contact, call in artillery / airstrike, advance... that was allied (mainly US) tactics. Was efficient, but not so heroic like they wanted to be. Read Otto Carius book "Tigers in the mud" about the eastern front where he earned his merites. That kid is getting people killed while hiding in tank. He will either grow a pair after getting his hair parted or he won't get back in the tank and maybe his replacement will do the job. He is the weakest link.
@@leodwinak The movie focusses heavily on his character development. Give it a watch.
Sony probably felt he adds more character development to the film since the common audience are all 'bloody clerks' and can relate to him
You don’t pull from infantry, they have their own jobs where they work in close teams.
Pls just fire any „military“ or „historic“ consultant on this movie and never ever employ him in anything other than a fantastic flick.
dog shutup its a movie
@@gradeobama9141 yikes. a movie about something in history should be a little bit correct?
This scene is EXACTLY how infantry and tanks worked together to assault across a large open area. UA-cam is full of actual documentary footage of tanks and grunts working together like this. Germans had only been fighting for 4 years, still missed Sherman’s moving at snails pace, ludicrous like kids playing soldiers with real tanks daft film
And with hardly any suppressing fire!
It's 1945, Germany was desperate for more bodies so they conscripted new soldiers. The ones in the clip might have barely passed basic.
What an amazing piece of cinema this was! Can only imagine what it was like on the field in actual moments like that… just insane.
