Yeah, his overreation seems to be PTSD rather than a patriarchal attempt to dictate his daughter's life. It's refreshing to see a parent acknowledge that their child's rebellion was warranted.
@@VS-re1sr A mix of PTSD and believing he's saving her, and I like that it's easy to understand why he feels he's saving her. His friend died, and he's probably completely aware it could've been him - and he doesn't want the same thing to happen to Moana and for her to be the unlucky one that time.
The singing voice for Moana's father was done by Christopher Jackson. He played George Washington in Hamilton (and was also Benny in the original run of In the Heights).
lilo and stitch will always be my favorite, and i only watched Moana through a single time and it immediately became my #2. (list doesn't count the disney classics that will always have top ranking in my heart, Robin Hood, Fox and the Hound, Jungle Book, etc)
As a Pacific Islander who grew up on Disney I absolutely bawled my eyes out in cinema watching my culture be represented on the big screen and done so well thanks to the many Polynesian talent involved in the process (special shout out to Te Vaka, a popular polynesian music group who provided their classics for this movie and absolutely hit home)! I even took my dad to see it and I was 20 at the time 😂
Same here😊😊 always have goosebumps everytime i watch this movie❤❤❤and yeah! Special ovation to Te Vaka, one of my favs artists in this world❤❤ they're so popular here in french Polynesia that you can always listen to them every times...
This movie made me so proud to be a Pacific Islander…. And I’m not Pacific Islander. 😜 In all seriousness yeah I see that. When this movie was new I had recently watched a documentary about ancient Pacific wayfinding. I could not get over how many actual navigation techniques (beyond the stars which everyone knows about) were used - temperature, weather, sea birds, currents in “We Know the Way”
I first heard "We Know the Way" when I had been away from home (New Zealand) for 3 years and the harmonies in that song brought tears to my eyes and took me back home. I believe the languages used in the South Pacific are some of the most beautiful and underrated languages on Earth. Was bawling in the movie theatre when Moana sings her triumphant "I AM MOANA".
The giant crab, Tamatoa, was played by New Zealand actor Jemaine Clement, who’s best known as part of Flight of the Conchords, a comedy band-turned-HBO show in the late 2000’s. Lin-Manuel wrote this song specifically in the style of what he’d done with that group.
Moana means so much to me and my Ohana. It was my grandpa’s favorite Disney movie and we’d listen to the soundtrack while he was in his bed dying from dementia. This movie means so much to me, I cry every time ❤
One of the extras on the dvd shows how Disney brought the music team together in the South Pacific. It is an amazing mixture of musical talents trying to stay true to this Polynesian heritage. Worth the time to watch. Bonus, see Lin Manual Miranda win a Polynesian Dance Contest.
"Shiny" was definitely an homage to David Bowie and written by Miranda to be sung in that style. He wanted Jemaine Clement to sing it like Bowie. Clement is known for having a spot-on Bowie impression.
Fun Fact I do not see mentioned so far in comments: The chicken Heihei is actually voiced by Alan Tudyk, known for many prominent roles in movies and TV. Wash in Firefly/Serenity, Tucker in Tucker & Dale vs Evil, Wat in A Knight's Tale. But his most recognizable work is in voice acting, and he's heavily embedded in Disney projects. K-2SO in Star Wars: Rogue One, Sonny (main robot) in I, Robot, Alistair Krei in Big Hero 6, Duke Weaselton in Zootopia, Iago in the live action Aladdin movie, Tuk Tuk (the little armadillo) in Raya & The last Dragon, the Toucan in Encanto... And as he ironically comments in a BTS video of Moana himself, he's Juilliard trained, frequently being cast to act as animals xD
So glad you reacted to this! I am always intrigued to see how people respond to the aspects of the culture (I am from New Zealand and am of polynesian ancestry, Half maori half european) our music is often the strongest way to tell our ancestral stories, beyond telling the story through music we want to convey it in a spiritual sense too, i think you kind of tapped into that through the nuances and layers in each composition. Awesome!. Also funny enough Sina who plays Moana's mother is voiced by Nicole Scherzinger (former lead member of The Pussycat dolls) she has an incredible voice but wasn't given any songs in the film. The woman who voices Gramma Tala is Rachel House who was only 49 at the time of filming, she is also very hilarious in person!.
The giving the heart back scene, watching it in the movie theater was just amazing. I just cried(I always do in that scene) and looked to my friends and they were crying too 😭😂 but yeah, the combination of the singing, slow motion with a beautiful scenery and Te Fiti just desperate to get her heart back 😢💖 Edit: I also cried when his new tattoo was revealed 🙏🏻
Yeah, this is definitely in my Top 3 Disney movies. I love everything about it. The dad's singing voice is Christopher Jackson (Washington in the Hamilton obc)
Love Moana! If you haven't already, you should do Princess and the Frog. It is one of my favorite Disney scores, and is totally different than any of the others. It is set in New Orleans and leans hard into different styles of jazz.
I cried twice in the theater at this movie. The first is when her Grandmother’s spirit in sting Ray form carried her over the reef, the second was when Moana says “they have stolen the heart from inside you, but this does not define you.” To anyone who’s ever been violated and felt like their heart was stolen, that line means so much.
I Am Moana song with her Grandma on the boat is beautiful and the final song to the Volcano Monster is beautiful. I get shivers and cry every time I listen to those songs
Opetaia Foa’i with Lin Manuel wrote and composed the songs, with the help Igelse Ete as well. Opetaia Foa’i is the legend that started Te vaka a Pacific sound band some of their songs are featured in the movie like Loimata e matagi and Logo te pate at 9:03 Opetaia and Igelese are music legends in the pacific islands
The song "Loimata e Maligi" was rewritten as An Innocent Warrrior for the movie. The original is a beautiful tribute to the 19 girls who lost their lives in a boarding school fire in Tuvalu. I'd highly recommend looking up the song and translation on UA-cam.
Moana's dad was voiced by the actor who played George Washington in Hamilton. The person singing the song at the end, or both times when its the english parts, is Lin Manuel himself.
i’ve watched this movie so many times and every time it brings me to tears over the music without fail. even when i was a kid i was like OH MY GOD my little musical nerd heart was so FULL
I live in Hawaii, and when I first saw this in Hawaii, everyone in the audience clapped, and some cried at the end of the movie. Auli'i Cravalho was only 14 when she was cast as Moana, and is a great representative of Hawaii.... She is an executive producer on the live-action Moana soon to come out and also on Broadway in Cabaret with Adam Lambert. Moana 2 comes out next week and from the trailers I've seen, will be another great movie...
Every time Disney musicals explore non-European cultures, the music goes HARD. I hope they do an African-inspired fantasy musical (with humans) at some point.
@@brandonthompson1856 I looked it up on the Disney wiki, and it certainly sounds interesting--though I lament that there don't seem to be any plans for it to be animated or a musical.
I would love an animated about that one African story where it was about this man who had seven daughters? I forget the name of it :( but I read the book as a child.
@@RedRoseSeptember22 I've never heard of that one before! If Disney adapted a story (or was inspired by one), I'd enjoy "The One-Handed Girl" or "The Boy with the Moon on His Chest." Honestly it'd be so great to have an African fantasy musical!
I knew next to nothing about this movie before I watched it and was flabbergasted by how good it was. Disney knows what it’s doing with these animated musicals
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but Moana references a period of the Pacific Expansion that suddenly stopped for centuries before continuing. In the movie, this is the result of Maui stealing Te Fiti's Heart making the oceans too dangerous to cross. For a long time there was no logical explanation, though there may have been one found back in 2014.
I went into that film with zero expectations. Now it's one of my favorite Disney films. It's a solid story in general, but the incredible music really puts it over the top. Of course Disney is known for having good music as a part of their films but this one was special. Absolutely love it.
Also, if you haven't heard about it, look up and read about "The Long Pause" in relation to Polynesian culture. Moana is very loosely based on this idea about why ancient Polynesians stopped exploring for thousands of years before resuming.
"Shiny" is the song that came out of left field and seemed like it didn't fit... but that you didn't know you needed until it happened. Also, MOANA is close to my heart and a lot of why is because of the music, especially "How Far I'll Go." It filled me with the courage enough to move out of the state I grew up in, away from all of the people I knew (including my abusive family) and start a new life somewhere that I'm much happier. I will always, always love this movie and its soundtrack.

"This Day Aria" (sung by Britt McKillip)
"You'll Play Your Part" (Rebecca Shoichet, Nicole Oliver, Kazumi Evans, and Britt McKillip)
"The Magic Inside" (Lena Hall)
"Open Up Your Eyes" (Emily Blunt)
"Rainbow" (Sia)
and "Lullaby for a Princess" (a notable fan song)(Christina Ellis).
Did she watch the small little clip of the crab on its back at the end of the movie? I think she would get a kick out of that
