Thank you for doing your analysis. I’ve actually been fascinated with her use of the word “town”, too. And the use of it in False God had always been perplexing to me. Keep it up! You’re a smart person and it’s interesting to listen to you 😊
Oh, Christina! This is so amazing. If you know the meaning of her special words, it helps you understand her songs more indepth. Thanks for bringing out her meanings to the word “town.” That was so enlightening and helps us understand also better what she was going through when she was writing the songs. She is an angel to me. She is so talented. She helps those who have gone through mistreatment from those who should be their biggest sources of support cope. I will always appreciate and be so thankful to her for helping me cope with the most traumatic times in my life. It’s like having support every time I listen to her. If not for her, that wouldn’t be possible. Thanks Christina. I appreciate you for helping me understand the secret meaning to the word “town.” Only Swifties understand.
Very interesting analysis! Do you think midsize city hopes could be hopes about being with Matty again and small town fears could be about Joe and her being scared every single day(so long London). So maybe after Joe and Matty she was saying she no longer had thoughts about either of them and she feared she’d be alone (the prophecy) so all she could do was fantasize and daydream…?
Little did you know your home is a town your just a guest in- I think she means… I thought London was home but I was just a guest. And London means joe- I thought Joe was home but I was just a guest (temporary). I do think at one point she thought Joe would be her forever person. In exile there is a line “you were my town.”
@@ultravioletpisces3666 I love this insight thinking that you can end up being a guest even in a “home” you thought your had! I also LOVE the line “you were my town” and mention it! I love exile so so much for the town references!!
@@NinasNook I love everything about exile I think “you were my town” is her “home,” but also… your town is where your loyalty lies. “Who am I defending.” I think of town in this song to some degree like a kingdom- something you fight for and are loyal and patriotic towards. (Oh damn that makes me think of bejeweled talking about kimgdoms… I think she does talk about kingdoms in a few songs as well) One of my friends posted a clip of someone saying “if I make you my emotional home and you put me out then I’m homeless,” or something like that.
Midnight rain “my town was a wasteland, full of cages” makes me think of “these people only raise you to cage you.” Both “daddy I love him,” and “who’s afraid of little old me” (and to some extent “I hate it here,” all talk about this “town” (fame in many ways) that try yo keep you small, but some people are comfortable there
Holy crap, I JUST GOT what “little did you know that your home is a town you’ll get arrested.” (🤦🏼♀️ duhh) (Fresh out the slammer etc.) or home (your comfort zone? Fame? Love/relationship?) can become your prison. I didn’t get the arrested reference, I was thinking legal trouble instead of being “caged.” (You wouldn’t last an hour the assylum where they raised me - til the circus life made me mean - circus animals are caged… )
I would also like to point out as an example that *Hollywood* is a “town” but it’s also an industry and a wider ideal…. That’s what I think of in Last Great American Dynasty when she said “this town.” I hope that makes sense
So…. I hate my hometown so I totally identify with many of these lyrics in a pretty literal way. Midnight rain makes me think of a hallmark movie (so does tis the damn season lol)… the small town where everyone thinks it’s paradise but the hometown girl wants more for herself and goes and makes it big- which I do also think she means it in part this was as well. Like… “he wanted this peppermint candy “Apple pie” life but for me that was like a cage I couldn’t wait to escape from
Peppermint candy- but for him it’s everyday! I really view this as her both longing for a small life while also not identifying with it. She loves being famous but also views small towns, etc through rose tinted glasses that she knows wouldn’t actually satisfy her.
Would love to see you post playlists on Apple or wherever for episodes like this ❤

As a writer as well Taylor's lyricism is one of the main reasons why I love her music so much.
It’s mine too! Writing is truly her super power!

This video gave me so many thoughts that are all moving really fast lol. So I don’t even know if they are cohesive or make sense. :)
Yay! I’m so glad you liked it! I love your thoughts so much. 🥰

Now that I think about it, that seems to be a major theme in a LOT of her music

Yesss! It’s been driving me crazy for literal MONTHS all the references so I had to talk about it! 😂😂😂
also "Years of labor, locks and ceilings in the shade of how HE was feeling" in Fresh out the slammer 🙌

This is so true!! Hollywood is 100% also an idea and I agree!

in I hate it here she also speaks of her mind as a place
Yes she does! It’s one of my favorite mentions of it! ❤️
