Sandstone Canyon off-road trail is a fun route for all levels of experience off-roader. This overland trail offers areas of difficult four-wheeling along with breathtaking views but don't let your experience level stop you from trying this trail. Even though there are several rock slides, the first few can be easily traversed in most capable 4x4 vehicles. Once in the canyon, you will be struck with awe-inspiring views of 300+ foot plus sandstone walls towering over just a few feet wide trail. Whether you are a Jeep person, Toyota lover, rock crawling junky, die-hard overlander, or just looking for the most epic camping spot, Sandstone Canyon should be your next stop when traveling near Palm Springs in the low desert of Anza Borrego in Southern California.
The video is a complete overview of the trail from start to end and was recorded in November 2017 after the massive flash flood that changed the trail.

Had to make this video longer than normal. The views and the cliffs are amazing and had to at least share 1/100 of what was out there.
Fantastic video! not hard but seems for sure to be worth the trip still. And its not to long - long enough to make someone want to go there! Thanks for this one for sure!
Thanks for watching
My favorite trail in the low desert... Has everything and this video got it. Amazing views, great offroading, and some of the best memories.... Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching and liking the video...
Anytime Josh! Thanks for watching.
Very cool video thx
Thank you for watching.
Great Videos
Thank you for watching
Very nice thank you, I might go in next few days.
Its a great trail, very much worth checking out even if you don't go over the big landslide that is roughly in the middle of the trail .
I will thanks for telling me where it is :)
Happy to help... There are several hidden gems in the Anza Borrego desert that are worth seeing that are not well known. While there you should check out The Slot, Diablos Tail off of Arroyo Seco Del Diablo, and Arroyo Tapiado's Mud Caves. There is many more other trails in the area that are unique and worth checking out. You can find all of these at TrailsOffroad.com. Don't forget, while drive through Borrego Springs to check out the metal sculptures. This too is available on the website with the locations to many of the sculptures.
Come on out Chaplain Bill!
Did you make it out there? If so what did you think?
Awesome video, thanks for doin what you do. Im heading out there with a small group at the end of the month, my dad is taggin along in his f250 4x4 shortbed stock on 35's... Would he be too wide for this? It seems in some shots the f250 would struggle to not scrape the walls. Let me know if you can! Thanks in advance.
Hey Greg, log into our website and check out the trail review on this trail. There is a new landslide and I would be concerned about getting the F250 over it. But with that said, you can always park it and either walk the remainder of the trail or have him jump in with someone else.

Nice!
Thank you
Not going to make the California trip this December, maybe next year!
Tracy, we are out on the trail all the time enjoying the adventures of off-roading. Make sure you follow our blog or on our Meetups for our next Anza Borrego adventure. If you are looking for something a little closer to you in the mean time, you can use our meetup pages and blog for details of our upcoming trips all over the United States.
The trail is fully open now all the way to the back turn around.
Which turn around?
What trail would you recommend for someone without experience wanting something easy? I have a 4runner 3inch lift and rock sliders thanks in advance
Good Day, you can't go wrong with Fish Creek. You can easily handle that one then drive back into Sandstone Canyon and park at the large landslide and hike the remainder of the tight canyon.
If you have a group with you, I would recommend Arroyo Tapiado and Arroyo Seco Del Diabo, Diablos Drop, go back to Sandstone and hike the end, then head out via Fish Creek.
If you still have enough time after either option, check out The Slot on the other side of the highway. (Just don't drive down the hill to Borrego Mnt Wash. )
I was just there this past weekend. Does anyone know why the Parks Service closed the trail half way through now? We were disappointed that we had to turn around and go back the way we came in.
The best thing to do is call the park and voice your concern that the trail is prematurely closed. If enough people call, the likelihood of them undoing this is high.
Since you guys were there, did you get Heart Attack Hill or The Squeeze on video as well? Those obstacles are always fun.
We did, we will be working on the video soon. We recorded all of Pinyon Mountain trail in 4k too... Even got some tire pulls coming down Heart Attack Hill.
@cavediverjc-thanks for viewing! Yes, they are on the Pinyon Mountain Road video, updated last March (2017).

Awesome scenery. What to do with a flash flood though. All of that awesome canyon has been carved by water.
This is one of those places you never go if rain could be in the area... In the trail review, we mention this several times. There would be no escaping a flash flood while in this canyon.
Let's just hope everyone heeds your warning. It sort of reminds me of that place, in Arizona I think where you can only hike. It is underground in a deep canyon. It is awesome scenery though.
Reminds me of Split Mountain area. You don't want to in here during a flash flood.
This is just up from split mtn. Head over to our website for more details. You can find the link in the description
I need some stickers from you guys to slap on my truck
We usually keep plenty in our vehicles. If you see us out on the trail hit us up and give you some.
At 4:33 how did the Nissan Pathfinder get there? Is there an easier wrought?
Even though it is very technical, we have and have helped many stock vehicles through the large land slide.
This trail at night is fun.
That it is
3:32 they just put up signs saying the trail is closed here. :'(
I specifically came out to test my new shocks and couldn't get through the hard part.
When did you go? We have been in talks with the park and sounds like they are going to move the signs. Just not sure where too.
Is this a point to point or out and back trail?
This is an out and back trail. You can find more details about this trail at www.trailsoffroad.com/trails/760-sandstone-canyon
Wow
Cool Trail?
Do you think my Forester would make that trip? I'm having doubts...
Good Day Frank, your forester might be able to make it to the middle landslide. If not, you can make it pretty far back before having to turn around. Easily far enough back where you could hike the rest of the canyon. But please note, it is extremely hot out there this time of the year.
You can find more detailed information at www.trailsoffroad.com/trails/760-sandstone-canyon
Is there a local Meetup in Orange county to go off road with?
There are tons, the best place to go is Facebook to find a group. What kind of vehicle do you drive and wheeling style?
@@Trailsoffroad I have a Tacoma 2017 offroad. I will create a facebook account. Thanks for the advice and cool video!
Is the rock crawling optional on this trail?
Yes in a way. You can park just below the middle large rock garden and hike the remainder of the trail. There are no bypasses on this trail. Please go to our website for more information on the trail: www.trailsoffroad.com/trails/760-sandstone-canyon
Is it OK for 2 wheel drive vehicles?
You might be able to get back to the trail, but you won't be able to get very far up the trail. Head over to our website for more information on this trail and the other trails that are required to get back to it. Link is in the description.
I mean...I got a 4x4 Tacoma with a 2.5" lift, but I don't think I have the ground clearance for this trail haha. To 35's and sliders I go!
You can easily get back to the large landslide. Then you could hike the remainder. But if you are with a group, you could try the large rock slide I've seen a few Tacomas back there. Just be warned it is harder coming down then going up.
Can I do this in my 2 wheel drive S10
You could likely get back to the first landslide, but past that would not be a good idea. Check out the trail review on our website at the link which it will answer all your questions. www.trailsoffroad.com/trails/760-sandstone-canyon
trailsoffroad.com do you recommend any trails that I can do in my 2wd s10 4-5 inch lift with 30”. I jus did Rainbow basin on Sunday and it was awesome.
@@dannyDCC check out our website and look for trails with a rating of 1-2. Most of these you should be fine on.
trailsoffroad.com by raring 1-2 u mean easy trails
correct, but pay attention to the number rating too.
This is closed now at the third obstacle...
We are getting many reports of this. The best thing to do is call the rangers office there and the super attendant and speak to them voicing your concern about keeping the trails open. The more people that call, the higher chance this trail will be reopened and stay open.
Just went there and most of it is closed

It's open now. Went yesterday.
The 5 people who gave it a thumbs Down lmao 🤷♂️🤷♂️
Hahahaha, thank you JB
