440 Big Block Plymouth GTX "Saloon Racer" Making 625 Naturally Aspirated HP!

- This was such a cool episode to shoot. Robert is a tech guy and has a couple of businesses but as a passion project he builds 1 car every year in the style of the old saloon racers and does all of the work himself except for paint & body and engine building. Pretty amazing from a tech guy. This Plymouth GTX not only looks cool af but makes the right power and torque with that 440 big block...this is the "Mopar or No Car" approach so sit back and enjoy the ride...

My uncle would always talk about his green 67 4 speed 440 6 pack gtx he sold in the late 80s to pay for his wedding, which ended badly. 😢
Your Uncle sold his beloved 67 4-speed 440 6 pack GTX to pay for a wedding, and that woman divorced him and ruined his life. It is hard to sign a contract like marriage when the woman is always rewarded for breaking that contract due to no fault-divorce. I hoped you have learned from your Uncle mistake. Please tell me this is now how your uncle story went. . .
Bummer
I've learned to not part with very nice cars you hold dear just bc of a lady. I did the same thing.
Shit happens.
I sold a beautiful 55 chev 2 door post for $400 to travel to Europe in 1970.
One of the coolest videos I've seen in a bit. That built is awesome and the builder seems like the kind of guy you end up being friends with after you're his client
He’s definitely become a new friend. Cool guy and fantastic build
Real car guys always can hang and chat about what’s possible
I always thought I was a Ford guy who was also partial to Chev's but these are my favourite Plymouth. Having said that, there aren't any cars I have seen on Autopia LA I haven't liked. Maybe I am not a Ford guy after all, maybe I just love cars.
I’m like you. Not brand specific at all. I just like great cars
Every company has built cars that they can be proud of and also some cars they should be ashamed of.
Robert rocks!
You’ve managed to hit another one out of the ball park with this beast. Thanks for the continued content!!!
Thank you! This guy and car are pure cool 😎
@@AutotopiaLA The forward tilting hood is seen on the 1960 Mercury Monterey. I might build a Saloon racer from the one that is sitting here. The racers at Goodwoood in UK is where the inspiration came from for myself, and the massive Ford's that appear there. Your show only helps to corrupt a wee bit more :) This MOPAR build was pretty incredible to ride in, I am sure.
.this car is one HUNDRED percent fkn badass ! MAD props to the builder!!!
Totally agree
Worth the wait
I built a 66 Belvidere with my best friend back in 1988-89 and we raced that at Detroit Dragway every weekend for several years.. plastic windows, 383 built engine with ported heads from Sealoff engines in Wayne Michigan.. car was spectacular. we first got it running and drove around the neighborhood with 4 lawn chairs.
My dad used to do something similar in the 80s aswell. Here in Australia they had the Falcons. He built a 460 74 Falcon and the first time he took it out of the garage was sitting on plastic crates with the doors still off the car 😂
@@JooshyBoiPlayz i love it i had no idea others did the same.. it was pretty sketchy!
@@twistedneck Sometimes I wish I had been around to see all the crazy car shenanigans he got up to.. I hope to make the most out of the future and hopefully make plenty of my own memories in our 85 Falcon, She may not be a 70s Big block but I recon she'll rip with enough tinkering!
I have a 66 Belvedere that’s been in the family for 33 years. It’s never been restored and is a great driver. 383, 4-speed, 3.55. It’s the perfect driver. My dad bought this car when I was 9. Grew up in that car. I’m 42 now. Dad’s gone but the car is still enjoyed all the time. Now my kids ride in it.
Lawn chairs lol!! Sounds like a badass
Now we're cookin with oil!!!!!!!!!! When you look up BADASS in the dictionary there's a photo of this car right there!!! Hot Damn!!!!!
That one is a 67' I had a 69 Plymouth Road Runner, my neighbor a few doors up had a 70' Road Runner. He had the big ass Plymouth decal on his quarter panels like this car. This was back in the 70s.
This is one of my favorite cars you’ve ever had on! The simple black rims with the knockoffs are absolutely perfect, and all the little custom touches he did just make it over the top cool 👍
Absolutely love this car
One hell of a side gig for an IT guy, Built-in his garage Bare bones hot rod street car, With nothing more than you really need form and function❤❤❤ 😎
Now that’s something you don’t get to see everyday, nice change of scenery.💯
Very unique and pure cool factor
My Father in law had a 67 GTX with the 440 and automatic bone stock and it was a bad ass. This just takes it to the max.
I own (2)5.0s, [89&16] I've owned small block chevelles and big block GM products (Pontiac, Olds,Chevy), and I can arguably say nothing NOTHING SOUNDS BETTER THAN THE FACTORY STOCK TONE OF A '68 MOPAR 383 . Dodge, Plymouth, Chrysler 60s, and early 70s just had an engine exhaust tone that no other manufacturer could beat.
that car is bad ass, my favorite so far, Robert is the man. DAMN that's a nice car
What an absolute menace... A BEAST!
Definitely
Well done Shawn and robert.
Best Channel on UA-cam for this Content!!!!,Every Video Showcases Something Sweet&Nasty!!!!,Keep the Content Coming, but Keep Your Face Out of The Dash!!!,Glad You have Recovered Brother!!!
amazing build! Thanks for being so transparent!
Great job - the reality factor is appreciated as that's how life really is. Cool ride
That’s why we left it in. That’s the world of customs but what a cool build
Very kool Plymouth, I love the NASCAR vintage theme, a gorgeous heavy metal ride!
I built a 1968 Galaxie 500 Fastback NASCAR clone, very similar theme!
You just don't see too many of these kind of retro Stock Car concepts!
Rare seeing builds like this. Such a cool one
Love it! Love that u left in the part where u guys broke down for a few minutes. Its the reality of car building that no one sees.
um........Hell yeah! Car like that doesn't need a radio. Just listen to that 440 all day.
That 440 is the music for sure
What a cool car! That's the way to do it; sort out all the little shit & enjoy!
He’s gonna make sure it’s right before it goes to the owner. Such a cool build
Totally makes me miss my 66 Belvedere!
Dad had a 67 Belvedere ll with a 383 hi po. Have loved em ever since. I can't put into words how much I love this awesome build.
sick car and seems like one of the coolest dudes one the planet
Definitely on both. Really cool guy
I like his request for the motor and exhaust. I have a 72 Stingray and a pal of mine who owns a race shop was building my lower end and custom grinding a cam for me. He asked what I wanted the car to do, I said "I just want kids to sh*t their pants when I start the thing". Mission accomplished lol.....
This is a good reason why I watch this channel
I was so impressed with this build I spent three days making one for Assetto corsa. Thank you for making this video ! You inspired me as no one has thus far.Cheers to you.
Awesome! Waiting for his next one to shoot. Very cool build
I would have absolutely loved it in petty blue but that's me, it's amazing!
Badass build with a proper manual.
Liking the video without even watching it. Jesus, what a machine.
Such a cool ride
That's one mean S.O.B Shawn!!! As you know im a Mopar guy. It's such a pleasure to see this thing. Thank you for sharing this brother 🙏🏻 🖤
So many sick cars in that garage 🤤
26:00 - Me in my Mustang several times. 😂 My dad used to tell me, if it don't leak oil or break down every now and then, then it ain't a hotrod.
This car is by far my favorite i have seen on this channel.👍👍
Awesome!! Such a well done build
You always find the baddest builds out there. Thanks once again.
Even when built with this level of mastery. What a creation! This is just Bad Ass
Appreciate it!
I think the best compliment I can give is this was a car I completely hated, this guy changed my mind and then blew it.
Is it possible to be in love with every damned car this channel shows, cuz yes, I am desperately in love with all of em. This is one sweet car.
I know what you mean. Happens to me all the time shooting the vehicles we get around
Perfect example of “quality takes time.” I enjoy the builders perspective on details.
🤯 Custom bumper to lack of bumper, just a badass build! Car craft at work. Mannn it sounds good! I wish my 1990 Dodge Dakota sounded like😢
Yep. After watching twice now. This is is an extraordinary build. It's just.... the right "zone" of blueprint to be a ton of fun for minimal maintainance. Looks like a great gear set/range. And the chassis looks like it'll be fairly quick to sort out the rest of the driveability/manners. Great vision and follow thru!!! Kudos!!! (The kind of car that Larry Chen needs to get some poster shots of too)
The only minor issue i have and its very minor is the aluminum under the hood blocking the engine bay and suspension.. get rid of that!
You missed the reason… covers wiring and roll bar tie is from frame..
Nice GTX👍👍👍👍👍👍
Cool ride for sure as is the builder
Freaking Awesome! Outstanding Robert! Keeping it true like a Mopar!
Yo bro this is coolest car designer and fabricator ever been on this show. this guy is rad🤟🏽
He’s really cool. Looking forward to more with Robert
Nothing like vintage muscle, excellent build. Plymouth a great name plate. Good old days!!!!!!!!!!!
Hotrodders have to be prepared for anything and everything.
That’s right!
Shawn, love the wholesomeness of your channel man, god its so satisfying, love it brother man, keep up the great work and enthusiasm
Such an amazing car! Thank you for taking us through the ;process and taking us on a ride!!
Wow, I love this. What he did to widen his rear fenders is exactly the way every fender should be flared. I must say, I keep thinking the wheel arches should be raised up 2 inches and the car lowered to match. I have a '64 Valiant I've been wondering what to do about, maybe I should do it up something like this!
Yes please! Non LS. 440's rock big time. Pure visceral experience. Real tires so it's pothole friendly. Flex removed from the whole car and a great suspension. I can't say enough how I love this build. Drive the wheels off of it, rebuild, repeat.
Yes please
What an absolute incredible build from a master! I like that he builds these annual builds in his driveway, no fancy shop, no lift, no waterjet, no crazy tools...old school. Kudos Robert, what an amazing build, I look forward to seeing what you create next year! Shawn, another impressive masterpiece from another incredible builder. More of these types of builds!
Great video. I am usually into classic stock Mopars and don't like resto mods. But that car is badass. I want one.
Man this car is bad ass for real
Definitely
Hats off to the builder! What a machine!
Cool old car
Absolutely love this build!
Me too!
Seems like most of the classic cars you see these days are Chevys and Fords. I’m a pretty big Chevy fan but sometimes I get a little more excited to see some of the other classics out on the road like the Mopars, Pontiacs, AMCs etc. This Mopar here looks pretty badass.
Very nice car.
Awesome build.
Thanks for sharing.
Take care.
The GTX is one of the most underrated great looking Muscle car.
As always a thumbs up on the video like many have commented .. I loved everything about this one. Even it breaking down if that makes any sense in anyone else’s head.. And especially how Shawn explained the originality of it all as it occurred. This is a genuine example of wearing your heart on your mechanics sleeve. Bravo for not editing anything out of this video … must bring this guy back once the car is broken in and ready for action,,, or bring him back with his next creation. Great comradery .. Robert spoke about the build in a forensic manner and we still understood him and wanted more
Absolutely the coolest car on this show so far.
Thanks Shawn and to the builder for this. I love the old school Nascar/Trans Am style cars. This is one of my favorites from this channel
Appreciate it!
Really waiting for him to show off the beauty of these cars in delicious 4k
I fell in love with the GTX when I was a kid and first seen one in the old Chris Farley movie Tommy Boy, from then on I was hooked!
These cars are my second favorite builds over the prerunner style. The "what could of been" and the mostly raw race car that can be driven on the street. The coolest thing about this car is he followed the rule book for the SCCA and the European rules. Love this build, keep up the awesome work you guys!
Don’t see many GTX’s rolling around let alone a purpose built race gtx build I dig it man
Definitely a unique cool build
@@AutotopiaLA be cool to see that car later in the year or whenever they get that motor broke in fully lol 😂 I’ll play it loud in my Toyota Sienna and day dream lol
magnifiques sons ce 440 on en redemande ✋
The rawness and simply of it's presentation belies the complexity in it's execution. Bravo. Not easy to pull off.
What a pleasant dude. There's something refreshing about someone who obviously has a lot of confidence in who they are and what they do. Not to mention the car is incredible. This may be one of the best you've done 👍🏻
High school friend's grandma gave him her old 67 Belvedere w/ 318 as his first. We had many good times in it. This is a badass version of a great old car. Love the c-pillar lines especially and the square jawed looks.
This is, hands down, my favorite car you've featured! I may be slightly biased for two reasons and those reasons are; my dad has a '67 GTX that also started it's life as a Belvedere II and the second reason is because I'm an aircraft mechanic so the use of various aircraft fasteners and methods really gives me a hard-on! 😂 Such an amazing build and the changes to this car really compliment the, already, badass look of this body style! Love love love it!
This guy has this style down. I love the "trans am" or "nascar esque" style.
My hot rod won't be shinny, will probably still have some dents and dings, but with this same style.
Living on a dirt road makes shiny things kinda difficult.
Love the old mopars. Can't get enough of them. This one gave me idea's for a direction to go with my 69 road runner reserection. Streetable race car 😮😊
Gorgeous car ! Great video
Love everything about this garage build GTX! from the n/a big block to the classic looking wheels! whoa! bitching is understatement! definitely one of the most badass ride on this channel. thanks shawn!
can we also see more galaxie 500 too?! 😁
Can’t wait to bring my fox body on here 🤞🏾🙏🏾
Say when! We’ve only shot 1 Fox body and I love ‘em!
Love the mid 60s cars. Nice looking Mopar. The 440 really makes it.
Now that's a Hot Rod! I'd like one! Love the rumble of that big block Mopar!
AutotopiaLA really come up with great content! Great ride
... Hits Hard, my own SCCA Solo 1972 Dodge Dart build 340 4 spd. 18yrs old mechanic foreign cars. My first Goodyear Bluestreaks, 10.5 on frt. 9.5 on rear. strange look but old Mopar needed help up front. Big thank you to All ! What a time .... build takes me back SO Very hard, Well Done !
Im a huge fan of cars like this. Dont get me wrong, I Llve the mustangs and camaros. I mean, Im building one but they are all very similar in concept, and substancially more common. This car is so left field I love it. Great video as always!
Awesome car and builder. My neighbors had a 66 Plymouth Belvedere with a 318 when I was growing up. I've always liked this body style, which I feel is kind of under-rated. Thanks for the video!
Good Lord man! What an awesome build. Worth whatever obscene amount of money this draws. Bravo man. And thank you from the community
I much prefer this to a pristine restomod that you would be afraid to drive. All about function and performance...no fluff. Cool car!
I'm a die hard Ford guy. But I Love The super cool Mopars and Chevy's too. This is badass!!!!!
Incredible build! I had to smile about the comments regarding problems popping up on a new build. I'm going through the same things with my '66 Buick GS Stage 2 build
I love the drivers. Rock chips, orange peel and rubber on the rear quarters. The only water you're concerned with getting on the car is the waterbottle in the cup holder. 😁.Function and Form, PRODUCTION FOR USE. If i had a lottery winner's choice between this car and a Veyron,a Ferrari, or Lamborghini this GTX is the WINNER. I'm actually saving for, in my opinion ,one of the best looking cars ever built. 1970 440 GTX (line light, FJ5),(Tor-red,EV2),or (deep burnt orange,FK5).
My dad was a Vietnam vet and when he got back he bought a 68-69 GTX 440 super commando I put 69 cause I cannot remember which it actually was! Even when he was alive I had to ask which it was! They both look the same to me but he could tell you every bolt on it! He worked for Chrysler and my mom worked for Fisher Body in Detroit. Dad raced 440 class and some bracket racing! He owned the 440 class his cars best 1/4 Mile was 11.11 126mph on slicks obviously it wouldn’t do those times on street tires! He would drive to the track swap out back tires and run 11’s and drive home with the A/C on setting on premium leather seats 💺 with his trophy and cashiers check in tow! He was one of those guys you heard of who had access to the garage at work to work on their own cars on weekends and nights! So he had all those guys to help make the car the fastest it could be! He said he took it to a speed shop to see what they might be able to do to make it quicker and they said nothing we could only make that car slower said you already got the best of everything and some stuff we never seen before 😮😂
Love it.. the white tire markings add so much.
Builds always require sorting out. It's part of the build and honestly quite rewarding when figured out. Great video.
Nothing to hide here
What a stellar build style and quality level. Function over fashion everyday, but performance over comfort as well. This is the perfect mix of comfort, performance, and nostalgia.
Badass just got 500 miles on my 66 Satellite just got done building found many issues but all easy fixes
This is such a cool style, I wanna build a car like that... those wheels especially are super cool, and I'm gonna be daydreaming about the way he widened the fenders.
Amazing content.
Thank you! My team does great work
EXCELLENT content as always…
1 hour special maybe.. on his other cars.. just saying..?
Wicked! Simply amazing with the DIY approach.
