[TRIP REPORT] Hungarian Night Train Intercity Adria From Budapest To Split With Amazing Dining Car

- Intercity Adria is a seasonal train operated by Hungarian Railway MAV-START from Budapest Keleti to Split. It connects the capital of Hungary with the beautiful seaside city of Split in Croatia loved by tourists. This train has been in operation for some years for sure, but not many seem to know about this night train except Hungarians and the well seasoned train traveller. It doesn’t help that the service isn’t even visible on international train journey planner of the major European railway companies. It’s also not finable on third party apps. This train only exist if you look up the journey planner of MAV-START.
It seems like they want to keep this night train a secret or at least hidden away from international travellers. Nevertheless, English wasn’t a problem onboard and it was absolutely amazing to take this train, especially the dining car with its retro design and vibe. It offered a truly wonderful travel experience and is a great example of how train travel used to be in Western Europe before taking a flight became the norm for holidays.
For this trip I booked myself solo occupancy in the sleeper car. The train also offers couchette accommodation for budget travellers, but the sleeper cabin is a must on long overnight trips. If you want to travel with this train by yourself, in 2022 it runs from the 10th of June till the 24th of September. Booking is possible through the website of MAV-START jegy.mav.hu/ or at one of their international ticket office in Hungary.

Thank you for watching and coming along!
Hy, I was your train attendant. Very good video. Greetings from Hungary ☺️
Wow what a surprise you found my video! Thank you so much for the compliment and also for the service onboard of the train. You were a very kind hearted and nice train attendant 😊
Szia!

@@takmakoszia! Én is utaskísérő vagyok, szétszerelve, ha elfér a fülkében szállítható kerékpár. Remélem még nem késő :)
I have taken the round trip on this train I think twice now and the dining car and a comfortable sleeper is just superb. The air conditioning worked really well and keep the cabin cool in 36C temps and was so enjoyable. The food in the restaurant car was just superb! It is a really must do
Fully agree with you, any night train should be as good as the Adria!
hi i was your captain , greetings from hungary
Thank you so much for being our captain of the train, was a smooth journey!
Thanks for sharing! I learnt more from this video than both the Eurail and MAV-START websites
Haha thank you so much! It's really frustrating that both Eurail/Interrail or MAV-START provide so little information about this train. It even doesn't show up in journey planners. Hope this video helps you out with your travel plans!
Hi do they have a night train from budapest to rome?
There isn't one from Budapest, but there is the Nightjet train from Vienna to Rome departing daily from Wien Hauptbahnhof. Travel time from Budapest to Vienna is 2h20m which isn't too bad.
@@Tjuk02 oh ok thanks .
@@lolangtamad8591 You're welcome!
Thank you for sharing the experience, great and informative video! I was just thinking about booking this trip, after watching the video I'll definitely check it out!
Thank you for commenting! It's a lovely trip to do and I highly recommend every travel geek or train buff to take the Intercity Adria. It was one of my favorite rides onboard of a night train!
Did you make your reservation online or at the ticket office at the train station?
Good question! I bought it at the ticket office in Budapest-Keleti station, because I wanted a paper ticket for the collection. You can also buy it online on the website of Hungarian Railways MAV START and you'll then receive an e-ticket.
I love your content bro, I hope to see your channel getting many more subscribers in the near future. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much! I wish to continue doing what I love the most, travelling and sharing my experience :D
I am glad you liked your trip from Budapest to Split. We are booked on that train for a trip in September. However, your laudation of the restaurant is somewhat lopsided: clearly, you are a meat eater which is a biiiiiiig problem for Mother Earth.
I would have appreciated some report on the vegetarian or vegan courses available in that wonderful restaurant carriage. Knowing the choices on Utasellátó's units (that is the name of the catering arm of MÁV) I am pretty doubtful anything reasonable is available.
Thank you for your comment and sorry to hear about your concern about the lack of vegetarian and vegan options. I agree that MAV does not offer a lot, but if you look at DB or ÖBB change is on the way. They both offer increasingly more vegetarian and vegan food options. Give it some time and I'm sure Eastern Europe will also get these options in the near future. Having the freedom to choose what you want to eat is something I value and boosting more options will hopefully satisfy as many people as possible!
The video super!
Hi! Thanks for the great video! Thinking ahead to a trip this summer, does this train only run certain days of the week? How far in advance did you buy your ticket ?
Thank you so much! This is a seasonal train and runs only from June till the end of September. In 2022 it ran on Tuesday and Friday from Budapest with an additional departure on Sunday during the Summer holiday. The return trip from Split to Budapest departs on Wednesday and Saturday with the additional one on Monday. Nothing is known yet for 2023, but I'm sure it will return. I bought mine just the day before at the international ticket office in Budapest, but you can also buy it in advance up to three months via the Hungarian State Railways website which is jegy.mav.hu/ - Wish you happy travels!
can no longer find this service listed on the MAV-START website, even though its not completely out of season, do you think there is any chance they have cancelled it?
On the website of jegy.mav.hu/ I can still find the train running on 6, 10, 13, 16, 20 and 23 September 2022. Seems some days have been axed, but you can still book it on these days. Hope it helps you out, safe travels!
Thank you, we just will be use this train tommorrow. Looks all good :)
That's amazing, wish you a wonderful and safe trip! Be quick for a seat in the dining car as it is a first come first serve policy.
I have only travelled on sleeper trains in Japan, but I would like to take a European sleeper train one day. It would be nice to have a dining car attached.😊
Lovely :) this train is on my short list...saw him passing Balaton lake last week ....cheers from sweden ..karsten
Hope you can ride on it once. It is really a great train journey to do, especially with the dining car experience which is so rare in mainland Europe nowadays.
How far in advance do you have to purchase a ticket for this train? I am having trouble booking online but I will be in Budapest for about 6 days in August so I could visit the station to purchase the ticket in person.
Not sure how many days exactly for this train, but reservations open up 3 months in advance. I think you'll have a pretty good chance buying a ticket 6 days in advance, I bought mine just the day before at Budapest Keleti station. Good luck and wish you happy travels!
I managed to book 6 months in advance on line.
Very well made 👍
Thank you very much!
