Cheap fares, punctuality, cleanliness and reasonably priced edible food - the perfect combination for any train journey.
I can assure, they mostly do not apply to the hungrian train system... well it relatively cheap
Food is not just edible, it is very good, actually.
@@borzix1997 It must be - I have no doubts. I was mentioning about the "bare minimum" someone expects when defining a good train journey.
@@HelloOnepiece I don't think that's entirely fair. MAV is not without its difficulties but in my experience services are generally punctual, carriages are in decent order and some are very nice indeed and the food very acceptable at reasonable prices. One also shouldn't forget the low ticket prices, particularly since the introduction of the monthly Hungary Pass. Overall I'd say you get much more than you pay for when you travel with MAV. It's at outlying example but ticket prices in the UK are usually so high I've often decided against travelling which surely defeats the point of a rail network.
@@Londonsteve56 Dont get me wrong, I respect most the staff at MAV, the fact that the relics they call fleet still performs is commendable. I mostly blame the current leadership who probably spread their legs to car oligarchs when taking break from spreading them to Russia
Hey Paul - as a sleeping car passenger you were also permitted to use business lounge (with shower facilities) at Budapest Keleti within 90 minutes of the train's arrival.
I'm most pleased to see that you can still lower the windows. Those carriages look immaculate, and what nicer than to enjoy classic EMD power through the mountains
I completely agree. All trains should be required by law to have openable windows! :-)
@@AlexanderTheEvenGreater and classic EMD power at the head end!
Fun adventure! I enjoy traveling with you 😊
Low-key, no drama - Yeah, you're a good traveling buddy! Thanks for sharing.
My favorite dining car experience: After spending 2 months traveling in India, I flew from Mumbai to Frankfurt. Booked a day train to Milan. Train took about 12 hours. I was awed to have spent a week in the Himalayas, then spend a day riding through the Alps, past Lake Cuomo.
I was the only one in the dining car passing through Germany, Switzerland into Italy. Breath taking views.
The chef and staff served me freshly cooked pasta, steak, veggies, salads and deserts that were the two of the best meals I have ever eaten, anywhere! The suggested wines were perfection. Back in 2000, I think my food and drink cost about $100 for the day! Yum!!!
My friends picked me up, promptly, at midnight in Milan for another week of fun.
Great memories.
Favourite dining car is also with MAV, the Corona train from Budapest to Brașov in Transilvania.
My favorite dining car was on a train between Switzerland and Austria, spaetzle dinner served to my seat.
Yes I have had on my last Europe trip in Sep -Oct last year, a very nice schnitzel on OBB railjet going Vienna to Maribor, Slovenia. and later enjoyed dinner into Zurich on SBB and then next morning the sunrise with a great breakfast going around the lakeside to Geneva. So yes both OBB and SBB are good quality dining experiences. Just a good deal more expensive than the MAV dining car LOL.
I am really glad to see that you were traveling on the Adria IC train :) And really happy that you liked the journey! Greetings from Hungary :)
12:58 ALWAYS pack refreshing towels for a trip. They are really useful and take little space.
My best dining car experience was when I was a senior in high school. The Rio Grande Zephyr which was the last private train in the US (until Brightline) was about to be taken over by Amtrak so I rode the train from Salt Lake City to Denver and the dining car experience was fantastic, basically what train travel was like in the United States until the 1960's. I was lucky to take the trip when I did because a landslide closed the line just a couple of weeks later and caused the train to run over only a portion of the route until the Amtrak takeover and several months afterward.
I used to patronise the London-Norwich service with an excellent dining car many, many years ago. For passengers only going as far as Colchester, the crew could serve drinks, 3 freshly-cooked courses (no microwave) and coffee and take payment in 50 minutes. As a video maker, I suggested this and other transport topics to BBC-tv for a documentary series. "No," they said, "no-one would be interested in programmes about trains, ships, planes and stuff."
'Service' as you described is but a memory on UK trains!
The BBC seems to be staffed by idiots then. Everybody is interested in trains, ships, planes and so on.
@@robertp.wainman4094 Yet they insist on referring to all trains as "services" in their platform announcements! ;-)
On a chilly March evening even in USA, it is lovely to see this lovely warm trip from last summer!
Great value for money and on a train service I've never heard of.
Those eggs & bacon … "Hungarian style" are not exactly what I expected, but I would prefer it all together like that! Looks nice.
Wow €8.9 for a bottle of wine is incredible, a friend of mine paid that for a175ml glass in Inverness yesterday and another Friend paid €23 for 1 beer in Paris!
well boy, do I have some news to you about the wages in Croatia and Hungary LOL
Reservations are already open! I work as ticket clerk in the Czech Republic and I have already sold two tickets for that train for july.
Great video as always. I've driven from Sturovo (Slovak-Hungarian border) to Split return and went via Budapest and along Lake Balaton. Stunning views and covered it in 9 hours.
Another great trip report thanks Paul. My favourite rail dining experience has to be Gerald of Wales; the TfW service from Cardiff to Holyhead leaving at 17.14 each weekday. Buy a First Class ticket and you get treated to silver service gourmet dining en-route! Amazing.
Great trip. Definitely underrated train in Europe.
I flew to Split, possibly before you wer born, in 1972. Amazing city and a great take off from the airport. Thanks for making a great veat video and for sharingit it with all your followers, Paul🙃🙂❤
Yes! A Paul Lucas video. Everything else can wait.
Original into music…love it
Just glad you are doing these unusually travel adventures
What a delight to watch!
Finest dining car experiences were a full English breakfast on a London to Glasgow service many years ago, plus high tea between Paignton and London Paddington and finally lunch between Edinburgh and Inverness. As far as the full #blish breakfast goes the dining car was first class but I had a standard class ticket so I took my time in eating my breakfast.
Going to Croatia for work during summer Season, now I am tempted to take this train to get there ;) Great video and editing, always very enjoyable and for me personally always something to look at for inspiration for my own videos. greetings!
Hungarian and Czech dining cars are the best. It is a pity that almost every European rail company has either reduced their "culinary" service to a self-service "bistro" or completely abolished it.
The onboard restaurants you can find on Germany’s ICE have a decent selection of hot food and snacks as well. It’s clearly not freshly cooked but nevertheless I find it quite good.
@@marcd6897 Yes, it is ok on the ICE. Better than nothing. But not comparable to really fresh cooking on some Czech trains. ÖBB used to have some good food on their international trains but I am sure they still have the same caterer.
@@karmesindryade I had a schnitzel on an OBB Railjet between Vienna and Maribor, Slovenia last year. It was pretty good.
My best dining car experience were on ČeskéDráhy's Railjet on my trips during Corona-times between Berlin and Vienna
Looked like you needed those 3 beers in that heat, Paul. Great vlog as usual.
EMD export locomotive, built in La Grange Illinois.
Looks like a great trip … and dining car! 😋 Thanks for taking us along. Cheers!
Great video, the ending was really funny! 😂
wow, did not expect you to be here too hahaha!!!
Wow, that was a lovely video, Paul. This train is actually quite nice, the only thing I'd miss is being able to lock the cabin door from the outside. The dining car is very neat, looks very pleasant.
What a fantastic journey - I love that dining car and wonderfully cheap beer too - what else do you need? 😆
The locomotive looks like a chopper class 20 we have in uk looks stunning in that livery
Bloody beautiful trip that one!Good on ya Paul and safe trips everytime!
Great overnight trip, and very good value for money too ! Caught the sun i see :)
When I first saw the word split, I thought this must be 2 part vlog…I now understand that’s it’s a city….
My personal favourite dining car experience I've ever had sadly doesn't exist any more: GNER trains restaurant car, on the East Coast Main Line in the UK, which operated from 1996 to 2007. Central European dining cars, especially MAV's Hungarian ones like the one shown here, are very good as well. The best in continental Europe currently in service, in my opinion, are the ones operated by SBB (Swiss railways).
Fantastic trip Paul.
Good to see you back on a train again!
Standby for other well known vloggers to try out this train. Well done Paul.
I think Doc Austin may have done this. At least one way, Prague via Budapest, he took the budget competitor with couchettes only, Railjet down to Split. Paul would seem to have had a nicer journey than Doc, but Railjet is a budget operator so it's not an exact comparison.
Excellent video and beautiful scenery!! Amazing price for your meal in the dining car. Hope all is well, take care
Fantastic trip report Paul!😸
What a lovely trip.
Cool video! It's a train trip that I wish I was on! Thank you!
First time viewer (now a subscriber) what a great video
Thanks, hope you enjoy the rest of the channel!
Great vlog as always! It looks like a must for me. Keep up the good work. Be safe!
Enjoyed the video. Accommodations and dining car look nice. Thanks Paul💚👍
Loved this, great review!
Great video as always
Enjoy your time🎉
Love ya vlogs paul nice easy waych when chilling
Great vlog Paul
Great video of this even greater train. Only the first date of travel in 2024 is, according to MÁV, on the 19th of June, instead of the 9th.
Well done. I love it
Favorite dining car experience is Amtrak long distance trains with a real kitchen. They used to have surf and turf with filet and grilled shrimps. Really good, and all meals are included in the fare for sleeper tickets.
Worst dining car experience is in Thailand. Boxed slop for $6, which is waaaay too expensive for what you get. Always buy from the station before you board. Hopefully they get a new contractor for food soon. Funny enough, day trains used to have better catering until they let the contract run out.
I always appreciate your point of view on your travels, although I wish they’d taken a bit of time to clean the windows 😂
Paul - I subscribe to numerous travel You Tube channels. I like yours the best. You're a great presenter and your content is spot on. A good mix of air and rail. I travel primarily business or first class so I find your upgraded travels very helpful. My guess is you have a sweet tooth.
David👍
Thanks so much, that’s very kind! 😃
A nice trip 👍
UK sleeper trains could never
I must say I had the experience today. In a Finnish InterCity train ....
Great vlog ... I love your work
super great video sir ❤❤😍😍
Good video, nice cabin ,apart from shower
Lovely
Best dining experience has to be the ČD dining car on the Hamburg-Prague route. Closely followed by the freshly-made omelette breakfast in the Romanian dining car coupled onto the "Dacia" night train from Vienna to Bucharest.
Entertaining and informative video, as always - thank you!! Can recommend the Budapest-Bucharest trip, when you get the opportunity...
Amazing mister
How was the air con in your room? I would love to take that train, but summer temps in that part of Europe are always brutally hot!
Thanks Paul. Nice video! Would like to do this train myself one day. Just a pity it only runs during the Summer (tho I understand why) as Summer is my least favourite time to visit Europe!
LOL Split Station has not changed much if any since I took a domestic night train trip there in late 2009 from Rijeka via Ogulin. I think you perfectly described it as "unassuming". Yeah there's a lot of buses (as well as ferries) that stop there one reason I think is because the rail network sadly doesn't go further south so when I went to Dubrovnik I had to swap to a bus.
It sad to see the amount of graffiti at Croatian stations. Rijeka was the same. In October last year I went from Ljubljana to Pula on the Istrian Peninsula and sadly Pula Station though looking quite a nice little station, was quite badly graffitied both inside and out. By the way I fully recommend this route (maybe an idea for you for another Summer or Autumn trip), especially if you haven't been to Ljubljana or Pula on your travels. But maybe after the large rail works south of Ljubljana to the Croatian border are finished. Sadly there's no similar night train into and out of Pula. Would be cool if there was.
My favourite dining experience is probably also on MAV train, the Cittadela Eurocity day train, Budapest Deli to Ljubljana in 2016, again with a delicious Paprika Chicken and Gnocchi lunch and Soproni beer at as you say, a very good price.
Oh! So this is where all the good quality Hungarian passenger cars went!
Hold on do these cars still only have toilets that drop DIRECTLY on the track-?
Great video Paul! I'm always shocked and saddened by the appalling amount of graffiti. Why is nothing done about it?
Hai Paul , next Indonesia train 2024 , lets go .
I want to live on that train.
in my head Croatia and Hungary are so close together on the map,, but i guess not Split and Budapest :)
Question Paul, when you boarded the train you mentioned how hot it was, how did you make out with the air conditioner? Did you get your room to cool off ?
The first locomotive sounds like the Danish Litra ME
That was one very trusting guy at 3mins....
between amtrak and via rail, via rail wins for food by a longshot.
9:15 well, peroni is not very beer...
English sterling!
When do the direct trains run? The routes on the booking website all involve transfers :(
Avanti Voyagers are fine, it’s the Cross Country ones that usually stink in the vestibules and are usually ridiculously over-crowded. Please review a voyager on the XC core on a Saturday for balance.
Thanks for the comment, I'm not sure how it got here of all places, but I think this one is for me.
@@SuperalbsTravels Haha, 10/10 for spotting that comment and replying! Yes it was indeed for you, sorry Paul!
Hi Paul,
One thing you did cover and importantly. When you left your cabin to go to the dining car. How did you lock your cabin? Or is it left unlocked.
June planning a 2 month train train through Europe/UK (every 2 years?
As I mentioned in the sleeper room tour, the cabin can only be locked from the inside, so if you leave it'll have to be unlocked.
@@Paul_Lucas I would love to do another overnight while I'm over there.
The last time it was with Trenitalia from Messina to Genoa. First Class cabin was shocking, no aircon, toilets broken, no food or water to buy. Second class had better facilities and aircon.
Have you done the overnight from Messina, Sicily to Genoa Italy 🇮🇹?
Took the sleeper Split - Bratislava sleeper train last summer and had an amazing experience. I booked a berth in a 4 person couchette but was lucky enough to have solo occupancy. We did pick up a bit of a delay somewhere on the way, I think at some boarder while I was fast asleep. By the time I reached Vienna it was a 45 min delay, which was a real bummer. You get a partial refund if your train is delayed by more than an hour, so I just missed out on that. I think I paid about 100€, I booked on ÖBB roughly 6 months ahead.
Are the sleeper coaches having air-conditioner? or not?
Shame you went for the Peroni, rather than the Hungarian draught Soproni.
That might be because Peroni is a much superior beer compared to Soproni. I wish it wasn't but it needs to be said. For on train beer quaffing you can't beat CD dining cars. I don't know what's available on an ICE Bordbistro these days but being able to draw on German brewing culture is a pretty good start.
That's a pair of Ukrainian carriages at 16:41 followed by an OBB (Austrian) one and then GYSEV (northwestern Hungary/Austrian company. Wonder where that train was heading leaving from Keleti-don't usually see non-Railjet Austrian carriages and I've never seen a GYSEV and Ukrainian carriage attached before...
That is Kyiv - Vienna sleeping carriages attached to Zahony - Vienna train ("Hortobagy"), via Budapest Keleti now (Nyugati in the past, don't know why they switched stations).
👍👍👍❤🤍💚
The guy stepping between the coaches and the loco at the start made me audibly say WTF never get away with that in western Europe
he's doing the coupling, literally his job
Please consider using American Dollars when talking about the price. It is still the world's number 1 currency.
HUF and EUR are the two relevant currencies on this train.
@@darkkrad5618 It's about the global viewers watching the video, not the train.
Euros and dollars are not really different most of the time. For most users local currencies are more important than USD, and anyway, Euros are used by quite a lot of people for comparing prices, especially on the continent where most people travel by train.
Dollars mean nothing to me, I live in Europe. I'm happier to deal in GBP, EUR or even HUF. USD is a global reserve currency for the banking sector but for most people it isn't of daily relevance. For example, I haven't a clue what the USD/GBP rate is as of today, whether it's low or high, etc.
@@Londonsteve56 Paul Lucas is on UA-cam not on his personal website. He has a global audience who understand dollars more than any other currency.
UA-cam was also invented in California.
