Yes totally agree, had Nox over 2 half years now , there's nothing to dislike with the nox
I not had any problems with it what so ever.
I added a carbon stem with locking camlocks CMD carbon stems really work well.
The only down side , I found it dosent like fresh deep ploughed, the more compacted it is the better problem solved.
All coils work great the 6 " is li'e a Pinnion

got any advice to help this freshly ploughed situation? I've found that it gets no depth on the fresh ploughed like you have.

I just bought the 800. My white's teasurepro like the opposite and will go deep is looser dirt but doesn't like the compacted as much. But then again depending on the soil.

I have a CTX 3030, had it for 10 years and just broke the coil 'ears'
There is a 'ear' fix if broken.
The issue is when you tighten the nuts it pushes the 'ears' inward and puts pressure on them. Woukd be the same on the Nox. Just cut 2 'washers' from say a plastic milk container and place one either side.
Then when you tighten the nuts the 'ears' don't bend inward. Thanks for the review. I may get one to add to the arsenal. Still live my 3030, technology that is still hard to beat 10 years on. Aussie Okie (Paul).

Thank you for the video, I am considering a Nox 800. I've owned and used many others and my last one was a E-Trac. Since you invited criticism I do have to say that a bit more detail would be great and less vague generalizations. I did glean some info that was helpful but was hoping for more :)

  • @ukspankedyank
    @ukspankedyank 3 роки тому +4

You could mention there are some good aftermarket items that solve some of the bad points. There's this thing you can attach to the coil that strengthens it and There's this carbon fiber staff you can get that has those flip locks on it.

I totally agree i also upgraded with the carbon shaft CMD offers.
And yes the only time , its not as good, is on light airy freshly ploghed soil, needs to be firm and
Compacted to work at its best.
But there's not many detectors out there, that are the same in that respect.

Great video, Grim. I just bought one this morning. I was hard pressed to decide between the Garrett AT Max and the Equi 800. I've used both the AT Pro and AT Gold before and they're certainly good machines but talking to people and some videos here on YT gave me enough info to decide on Minelab.
I've not done a lot of detecting outside of some in my work (mining geologist) and I've never had one of my own.
I did find a 1955 silver dime messing around a sidewalk with a Gold Monster once so I'm on the board for silver already. 😉🤭
Can't wait to haul that thing to the beach and a few other places all in walking distance of my place.
I'm off on a new hobby and adventure.

  • @kevintaylor4064

Grim, interesting thoughts, you having used the Nox for a few weeks. While I agree with you on the make up of the shaft & its inability to compact down for transporting in the boot of a small car, there are now collapsable carbon shafts that provide a solution to these 2 issues you stated. I have owned the Nox 800 for 2.5 years, having bought it a few months after launch. Mine is still in the standard form, I have bought the 6" & 15" coils as well. I don't go on the beach, not my thing but live in the fens spending most of my time on arable land, stubble & some pasture. I carry a coil lug repair kit with me in case but never use the coil for pushing soil out the way or leaning on it. Lots of my mates use a Nox, a few had coil lug issues but most admitted to coil abuse. As for your finding the Nox questionable on deep ploughed land, the first coin I found on the 15" coil was a cut quarter hammie 12" down & i have since found many deep targets. The Nox is a deep searching machine, so your comment on this aspect of use was surprising, as the machines I have seen you use before on your videos, are inferior in my opinion. But we are all different. I hope you stick with the Nox, many of the detectorists I dig with have had a Simplex or Nokta machine but after a few months up against the Nox upgraded & noticed the difference. CTX3030 owners have even sold their heavyweight machines for the lighter Nox & not experienced deep plough issues or a reduction in finds. Stick with the quality Minelab Equinox 800, after 2 years I'm really in tune with my Nox & have no plans to change, as its still the best machine on the market. Kev in South Lincs.

Great reply, grim is very new to the nox, two days ago whent on a completely dead feild its been hammered to death, two of us using the equinox 800 i got three hammered freind got one, believe me this feild was the pits, as been for ever, for fun we go on the worst feilds ever just to see what is really there time after time, it produces the goods as i said in previous comment, it goes deep on any soil not only that it goes deep on very small hammereds, and also loves gold,

Headphones a must, wish they were waterproof but would be heavier. Arm Cuff needs to be reworked to be sturdy, with being light as its key function. Hand Grip, you can hold it all day and Im a old man. Control Box, lot of power and options packed in there. Shaft, scratched easily but sturdy. Coils(s), all seem to do same depth but have slight differences when using them. Not convinced it is deeper or more sensitive than my F75. Also miss the two screen method I have on my etrac. As for setting up and running but find a program that works for you and stick with it. I find rings and has proven it can find rings. I also found a silver dollar and the numbers were dead on. Number ID tend to be within 3 digits so you have a good idea of what your digging. The sound feature is your best friend. You seem fixated on the coil lugs, if your swinging for over the fence you will be fine.

  • @kevp3011
    @kevp3011 4 роки тому +4

The arm cup wobble is due to the bolt being slightly to long and bottoms out and doesn't tighten properly, I added two thin washers over the bolt to fix the issue without over tightening .

  • @simonrocco

Good vid grim, Iv had my equinox since they first came out and never had any problems with the coil lugs snapping and I am pretty rough with it but I do keep it pretty loose so the coil can move easily though. I do agree with you that the stem could have done with an update maybe that's something minelab will change in the future

Gaps in plough and rocks....get a wee small coil for it.. works brill..
You can get a plastic protector for the coil bolt slot..
Think you can get telescopic shafts for it🤔
Other great aspects.. incredible audio of the signals and no digging of hotrocks.

I have 2 detectors a Whites XLT and a Laser Hawkeye.
I love my Laser but it's starting to play up.
This though good is too rich for me to buy.
I would like something similar to my Hawkeye but more modern.
    What would you recommend?
    I've been looking at Quest X10 and 30 also Vanquish 440 & 540.
I prefer woodland and parks, occasionally beach.
I been detecting since late mid 70's.
    Sorry for long question.
    Thanks 😊

I want to know how many others cracked a smile when you said "Shrubberies" :LOL Sorry I am a big Monty Python fan, but good review, I am looking at getting one, I am still not sold on it yet. I now use a Minelab Xterra 705 and a Whites MXT 300. The one complaint I have with thew Xterra is the compressed VDI scale as compared to the Whites. I hear the 800 is even more compressed. I wonder if I will like that, what are your thoughts on the compressed scale? Thanks for the review

For background, I started with Laser and Tesoro machines, moved to White's DFX then a Makro Racer 2, a Nokta Invennio and now an XP ORX. I have borrowed an Minelab 800 from a friend. My impressions were that it offered good stability and very good depth in ideal conditions. It was a very polite machine. It doesn't seem to chat much and I missed the constant feedback about what was under the coil. I didn't feel very connected to the target and it was not the machine for me.

  • @oldplucker1

I think most detectors are good on ploughed fields because the digging has been done by the plough. I have a Garrett 400i too. I found as much if not more than other machines but I use Beach mode on the ploughed stuff and Park 1 on the dry beach and Pasture. I detect in north essex and good luck digging a 12” hole you would need a pneumatic drill. The tones on the NOX are very pleasant and I have just bought a telescopic shaft. The only true way to compare detectors is to alternate between two detectors every 10 minutes and compare finds at the end of several digs. So there may be better machines for ploughed fields but without comparing as above we will never know. 👍

Hey 👋 I have another question. I’ve been learning my new equinox 800 and becoming more familiar with the settings it has to offer. I was trying to set multiple user profiles on my detector but it only allows me to set one. On the box it says you can set up to 8. (I made a coin shooting setup in park 1 mode, then when I tried to make a field setup in field 2 the park user profile went away and the detector sets my user profile to the field one) are you able to set multiple user profiles? Any help would be much appreciated!! There’s are no videos on UA-cam on how to set multiple user profiles, nor does the manual explain how to

In it's day the Minelab Etrac was the best on the market, yet ground conditions haven't changed. A comparison would be interesting. I had an etrac with standard 11", and it was better than the sef coils everyone said were better.
I never believe the hype about machines, as you need to test yourself to be 100% imho.

Good honest review, I agree with everything except that I found the headphones awful. The wind noise that comes through them particularly on the beach almost drowns out the tones, and after using some better headphones and the WM08 module, i'd never go back. In fact i sold them.
My favourite thing about it is that I no longer dig big old lumps of coal like I used to with my Makro.

  • @richardnewcombe9449

    Good honest review.
I mostly do the beaches but firstly i find as you do the build quality is a bit poor . Its very similar to the X.Terra in stem build and the cam locks after some serious use can break and just click round and not tighten.
I dont care much about it not breaking down smaller , i put the machine in the front passenger seat or back seats and it fits my Fiesta.
But the stem is poor quality . I think Minelab did that on purpose to keep the price down. Watch out for the next machine which is likely to be out in 2 years which i have been told might be based on the Nox but with far better target info , and stem ?
The coils = The main and almost the only reason people have lugs breaking is they lean on the machine as they dig holes but they are a bit poor.
The 15 inch coil is amazing , deep and brilliant coverage. Probably better for the machine than the 11 inch and i love 11 inch coils.
The arm cup = Not an issue with the design other than the bolt , when leaving it together for a long time the plastic bit on the end can fall off (X.Terra) and that is a pain though all you need is a Phillips screwdriver . And glue to put the plastic end back on.
Battery = i think its too short on endurance. Something along the lines of 25 hours charge with a 2 hour charge time would be good.
The hand grip is not a bother . But i bet it will wear down after years of use. That will be a problem.
Target info = Not a patch on many others . I prefer the E.Trac for target info which for me is still the best machine by far for dry beach or up to 2 feet in water . There are too few numbers on the Nox and most of the low tone targets are all in a small area on the screen.
Headphones = Good , they suit the machine but are a copy of a Chinese type and they are to damned expensive because of the Minelab logo on them . Try AUGUST EP650B (not BC) , a cheap type that i use.
    Charging method = Fine.
BUT = The biggest bug bear i have with this machine is that after the warranty runs out if it goes wrong there is no repair. But i have been told that there is a solution . Might be that you send back and they exchange for a lower price the box ?? Not sure of that one.
You say that it is poor in airy soil . All Multi Frequency machines are a bit awkward in airy ground. I found the single freq the X.Terra running on 7.5khts was great in airy beaches but the Nox isn't as good in Multi . The Nox does have single freq options . Use 10 or 15 khts for airy soil.
I found in Multi that it messed with Pylons too but in single it was fine.
I search many stony beaches and haven't noticed any serious issues with depth . But maybe my settings are the reason for that ? I set mine up to as close to my E.Trac as i can get it.
There are people that use one of the beach programs on land for certain places but i dont do much land at the moment .
Even if i did i think i would go back to my E.Trac or the Deus .
I dont know anything about Nokta's , have heard about the new Multi freq but i dont know if i would buy it .

At pro not in the same league, nox dont pick coke up it can hit a cut quarter under a pile of coke, multiique is very good it dont miss much, coil lugs breack by overtightning, had mine a couple of years now and it does a great job on any land including plough, its takes alot of getting used to, it does require a very slow speed sweep, best pasture machine out there recovery 3, feild 2, iron biase 0, sensitivety 24, 23, it also does not report iron on non ferrous sorry but most machines do, it can see through minerals,

Think your review pretty much sums up my view on the Nox 800. It's a capable detector but leaves me wanting more. Always feel a bit uninspired using it. You always dig up loads of crap with it too. The E-Trac, Whites V3i and Deus you really can read the signals more, they give so much more information of what's in the ground.

    • @rivercitymetaldetecting9854
      @rivercitymetaldetecting9854 2 роки тому

Simplex is nowhere near the machine the Nox is from a tech perspective lol.
You are talking a single frequency machine vs multi.
Go to some really hot soil or hit a wet saltwater beach with both and you will figure it out.
You will have to dial the sensitivity back on the Simplex to stabilize it which is common with single frequency vlf detectors.
Yes the build is a lil iffy with the Nox but everyone I know who swings them religiously gets an aftermarket carbon fiber shaft for them.
Also, a coil ear stiffener is a must imo.
I even run one on my CTX regardless what coil I am running on it.
Erring on the side of caution is better than downtime waiting for a new coil to arrive.

Cant beat the simplex for durability and at half the price...performs better in some circumstances than the nox I have seen them both tested against each other and they're pretty even in my opinion...nox for the beach though...Mr Grimm how much land are you avoiding simply because of the stress of breaking the machine? I asked myself this when considering an upgrade from my simplex...but I saw how flimsy the build quality was and quickly skipped on to something like the daus or this new Gauss that looks amazing for around the same price...but I'll watch for those reviews too before I make a choice or not make a choice to be fair as the simplex does everything I need it to do in these harsh conditions in Australia...cheers Mr Grimm a comprehensive review and one that honestly has turned me off the nox even more 😊👍🏻

Well seeing as the only machine I've owned to date is a simplex, I still plan on the big jump up to the nox. the interface looks as user friendly as the simplex which is a must for me. the tones are nice and soft like an R2D2 type robot compared to the simplex tones that are like an angry chicken.
dont get me wrong, I love my simplex but I'm going all in on the nox800.
thanks for your honest review mate.

Take it your new to detecting, the simplex is a million miles away from a vanquish never mind a equinox, but in all honesty i have been detecting 40 years it took me around 100 hours with the nox to start to gel with it, if you wont to try the multiique i would get the vanquish 540, first its a very good starter, o and on the nox yes this machine when masterd is a excellent all-rounder, i bought a simplex to see what the hype was about, identified twelve non ferrous targets in a dense iron patch with my vista warrior, the simplex only manged to get one of them, i did not put it up aginst the nox as some did pointless, nox would destroy it on any target, but to be fare its a cheap starter machine, ok for a first machine, simplex was sold after two weeks,

Got rid of 540 as awful audio response .. watched another nox800 vid ....and got the same awful audio... my conclusion must be this new multi iq ...
As been an minelab owner for 30yrs... and will stick with a machine with full fbs... as the audio modulation is fluid..... not like a kids toy....

Grim, your spouting bollox 😂. Pasture is its home , nothing comes close to its performance on pasture . All I can think of is your setting must be wrong matey .
In reality the equinox is a £1500+ machine , so to make it more affordable they had to use lesser quality materials for build to keep costs down .
