A couple of other things, this video only covered the main series games since it would have ballooned in size if I covered the handheld Zelda's as well. Same reason for not including the minor glitches that don't factor into the speedruns.
And the reason there weren't any discovery credits in ALTTP is because those glitches are so old it's almost impossible to tell the who and when of discovery for them.

    • @DavidWonn
      @DavidWonn 2 роки тому +3

@@Abyssoft Indeed, it is hard to track down who initially discovered what, even since the SNES era, so it is commendable that you track down what you can. Some gaming magazines of the time period did a disservice in not crediting the original sources (e.g. nobody to this day knows who discovered the DKJP lap skip in MK64) but that is its own deep rabbit hole.

When you think about it from a programming perspective, it makes complete sense that bombs have a tonne of associated glitches! Any standard bomb will, at minimum, affect the environment (destroys terrain), affect entities (damages and/or moves them) and affects memory (bombs need to be deleted after exploding). Any one of these could give you a useful glitch if not programmed perfectly

While not strictly a Zelda game, honorable mentions go out to the Smash Bros. series, where Link's bombs can go invisible, aid in recovery, reach otherwise seemingly inaccessible places in break the targets, and do other things...

For sure. In Melee (and probably all the other games), Link can leave a bomb on a platform if he's holding a bomb and presses Z at a specific timing while jumping through the platform. I've seen Link mains set up some sick plays with this technique.
Of course, your opponent can pick the bombs up and use them against you, but most Melee players are so not accustomed to using items that they just....don't.

Not many people know it, but bombs have helped speedrunners in Tri Force Heroes too! Using the little "stumble" animation when Link ends a dash and tries to keep running, you can drop bombs inside walls, or even right through narrow walls. With this you can hit switches, break blocks and kill enemies early, or do some weird reverse out-of-bounds tricks. Not to mention a few tricks by combining bombs with some other items.

  • @evanolsen6925

Fun fact about the Ball and chain from TP, the damage of the ball is quite literally that of a bomb, so you can use it to burn cobwebs and similar things. This is because the Ball can destroy bomb walls, and they neglected to remove the burning effect that a bomb has when they copied the code over.

Hey, I saw that link between worlds wasn't mentioned in this video, so I'd like to. In tower of Hera, speedrunner place a bomb on the edge of one of those switch blocks, hit the switch raising it up, then use gale rod just as it explodes to get hit by the blast. You can now climb up a bit more out of bounds using the gale rod to skip a large section of the tower.

Your explanation of ESS in OOT (11:56) is a little off. The slight tilt is tilting left or right enough so that when stood still links feet shuffle and he turns but without moving left or right. This is called "ESS position". This needs to be held the entire superslide as tilting too far or letting go will immediately stop the slide.
You can pause buffer to tilt into ESS position on the opposite side in order to circle left or right and you turn on the spot when focus target (Z button on N64 controller) is released and move again when it is held down.

the nature of a bomb to generate an explosion....a force known for its knockback...and the determination to include this aspect in increasingly more nuanced Zelda games - this was always destined to happen. LttP was the first one that gave bombs knockback, right? And from there it just gets more powerful. A controlled explosion! It's like an enemy, but more predictable and in great, controlled supply. You exploit the damage invincibility and the knockback, you exploit nearly every barrier a dev could come up with.

    For Skyward Sword:
    (1) The bomb vineclip in Sky Keep is only used on the HD version, because the invisible floor underneath the room that was present on the Wii version was removed. On the Wii version, it's easier and faster to do the vineclip to drop down to the invisible floor.
    (2) Skyward Sword additionally has a bomb boost that is used to get over a fence in bokoblin base in the 100% category, and get to the whip faster, skipping a platform cycle. (This is only possible because we can skip the cutscene where your items are taken away using BiT)
    (3) Maybe a piece of small tech, not really a glitch, but you can pick up your own bombs with the hook beetle, which the speedrun uses in almost every situation where the game expects you to carry a bomb flower with the hook beetle.

In the original, bombs can be used on room borders to activate most cutscenes in the game (known as a bomb trigger), which allows players to skip the entire Marin side-quest before D4. In the remake, there're also bomb glitches that utilize the Roc's Feather! When you jump with the feather and die to a bomb, when you revive with a medicine, you can get onto ledges and geometry that you normally wouldn't be able to reach! It's not as useful, but it can let players skip straight to D4 without the key by getting on top of the keyhole ledge and just walking through the waterfall into the dungeon!

How could you make a video on bomb glitches is Zelda games, including Twilight Princess, without mentioning the _INFINITE BOMB __-arrows-__ GLITCH!_ It requires triggering a minigame in a weird way and then warping out. The minigame requires using bomb arrows, so it gives the player infinite bombs and arrows for the duration of the minigame. By teleporting out like this, you keep that property letting you blow up just about everything in sight. It's more of a glitch _for_ bombs than a glitch _with_ bombs, so maybe that's why it wasn't mentioned.

There is a bomb glitch, of a sort, in the original Legend of Zelda. It's a variation of the Khananakey. Basically if you are in a room with a bombable wall and a locked door, you can bomb the wall and pass through the locked door as the bomb is going off. This is difficult to do in time but it can get you through the locked door for free if you have no keys. Alas, this has no practical application on any vanilla speedrun route that I am aware of, but it can potentially come into play in randomizer.
In the vanilla run, most of the bomb tricks revolve around acquiring them. "10th Enemy has the bomb" refers to a consecutive counter. Kill 9 enemies without getting hit, and bomb the 10th to get a bomb drop. If the 10th is an enemy that doesn't drop anything, the bomb will store for your next drop.

I suppose its a relic of history now, but the goron bomb jump was quite big in MM sequence breaking for a long time. It's quite a versatile move, though hovering came to overshadow it for obvious reasons.

0:21 Funnily enough, in The Wind Waker, Bombs are actually obtained quite a ways into the game; you need to have cleared two dungeons (Dragon Roost Island's and Forest Haven's dungeons) to get two Pearls, then you need to sail to Greatfish Isle before being told to head to Windfall Island - which is where you FINALLY get explosives, after watching the pirates loot the obnoxious bomb-seller's stock and then sneaking into their ship.
So yeah, kinda ironic you used TWW footage whilst saying "one of the first items you receive in just about every game". Not quite true here.

While there aren't any glitches related to bombs in Zelda 1, (Beyond weird behavior with darknuts) they are EXTREMELY important in the speedrun, and speedrunners have learned how to manipulate guaranteed bomb drops precisely.
