  • My Mister is a korean tv drama series that's a sleeper hit on netflix and has developed a cult following around the world thanks to it's class!
It's also my favourite drama series of all time!
In this video I'll analyse and breakdown probably the most complex scene from My Mister Episode 10.
I believe a lot of people have different interpretations of this scene and in this video I want to breakdown exactly what conclusions I've come to about the logic behind Lee Ji-An's actions when she's confronting Dong Hoon and asks him to "hit her on the head so she can stop liking him"....
I hope we'll be able to have a nice conversation about our different impressions about this episode in the comments section.
Drop your thoughts in the comments and let me know your favourite scenes in My Mister Ep 10 and 11 (so I have your thoughts for the next video)!
If you've enjoyed this video make sure you subscribe and enable notifications too...as I will carry on making this series until i have completed it!
Thanks for watching, commenting and sharing!

I’m here coming to your reviews and analysis in 2023!! cause I watched this masterpiece a couple of weeks ago and now I’m doing a rewatch (once time is not enough to truly appreciate this drama). I got really confused the first time I watched this scene and I think it was because Ji-an mixes truths so well in her pretending that I was like where this all emotional outburst came from?! But you’re absolutely right, she does it all to protect him, it’s all for him. Poor Dong-hoon though has no idea and he gets all confused, she keeps hitting the nail on the head about her feelings for her. To me there’s no doubt about it: he’s in love with her; it’s clear in the way he looks for her presence everywhere, in the longing of his looks, in his silly excuses to talk to her when passing by her desk, he’s just in denial. He’s very confused about his feeling especially considering that his marriage is a real mess at the moment, but Ji-an has become his comfort person no doubt at all. And for someone so introvert and quiet, your comfort person is your whole world. She knows him like no one else at this point already.

When I first watched it, I thought, even though we didn't see it, that she went in to the cafe and told him that there is a photographer outside, and that they had to make a scene. I agree with everything you said though, that this was a calculated move on her part, unbeknownst to him. However, I think she meant almost everything she said at the same time. She really did like him, and she really did want to shout it to the whole neighborhood (and did), and wanted him to hit her in the head to knock some sense into her, because she knew she couldn't. You're right about her face at the end - it shows she calculated it and was aiming for it, even if some of it was true, because if she hadn't calculated that, her face at the end should have been so upset as she left. The acting and script for this is so incredible.

This was the most passionate, loving, physically touching, self-denying, and romantic scene in the whole show. I love this episode so much since this is where Jian and Donghoon physically touched each other so passionately, not in such a way that young couples do. This was where their emotion to each other was shown nakedly. Jian showed her loving feeling toward Donghoon, and Donghoon in some way showed his emotion too by trying to hide it too hard. Thank you very much for reviewing this scene!!!

What I love about this scene is how it so perfectly encapsulates the power dynamic between these two. Even though they love each other, both in a platonic, almost familial way, but also in a romantic way - at least the beginning stages of liking someone romantically - there's still a power dynamic at play because of their social positions and age. Park Dong-hoon is acting out his idea of what an adult is supposed to be - stoic; suppresses their feelings; maintain the status quo above all else, even if it means turning a blind eye to being mistreated and humiliated - and ironically he can do so because of the relative comfort he has carved out for himself. Lee Ji‑an has had no such luxury, having experienced the world at its worst effectively, which has matured her prematurely, for good and bad. There's no question that she's more mature than he is, and here she uses that maturity to beautiful and brilliant effect. She actually manipulates him expertly, but it's for the sake of his safety and reputation. Yet, she will still maintain the facade that he knows best after this encounter and that she's the one soaking up life lessons from him, whereas their actual power dynamic is almost equal and one of mutual education in the lessons of life.
I absolutely love your analyses from an actor's and also just empathetic perspective. This scene is so complex, yet so expertly played out. So many layers, and the actors communicate it beautifully. I honestly believe this is as good as narrative entertainment gets. I thought Mad Men was the apex of multi-layered narratives and complex characters, but My Mister is a step above even that. I hate the word "masterful", but it's pretty masterful stuff, from all of the various collaborating parties.

@@JWPanimation As I've matured, terms like "masterpiece" and "master class" have come to make me feel really uncomfortable. It feels as if these terms have become so overused that they barely mean much anymore, but I think in the case of My Mister it applies, even if it's just because the mood and delicately shifting undercurrents are so expertly maintained throughout the series. I think the writing is just very, very good, and the director and all the actors are equal to the mammoth challenge, but of course also opportunity it presents. I think it is an almost miraculous collaborative effort, and that's why we're all here, barely believing that something this good exists. I'm just thankful that I discovered it purely by chance; because I was looking for something with the subdued, understated tone of One Spring Night. Of course, My Mister far eclipses even that very enjoyable and mature series, but if it wasn't for the impressions left on me by the former, I wouldn't have discovered the latter.

@@petertromp8786 I totally concur on the use of the word "masterpiece", it's unfortunately become hackneyed. For MM it's just so damn well crafted on so many levels. Everything works and works together to drive the drama, whether it's the writing, direction, acting, production design, lighting, camera work and sound (PDH breathing, music). MM is also Kubrickian symbolically. Director Kim Won Suk said in the first reading of the script that he meant to create a masterpiece and I think he is not wrong.

I think this scene was pretty clear for me. I perfectly agree with you, except for the reason why he beat her: I think that he didn't do that because he thought she was "crazy", but because he wanted her to stop hitting his weak point, that is, he likes that she loves him.
Even if I'm not a a huge fan of them as a "traditional romantic couple", I think this scene perfectly portrays their relation: she can express her feelings only "pretending" that they are not true, and he doesn't even want to think about his own feelings...

I have written a comment about this scene a week ago to my friends. Here I want to share it and argue that what JA had done is not only a trick to deceive the CEO , but also her uncontrollable confession. There are many foreshadows in the early scenes of this EP。
At the beginning of this EP, we all know that DH had a fight with the loan shark. I am sure that JA was moved, even inevitably crushed on him. We can recognize her feelings about him going forward from the scene --she lean on a wall , waited for him and finally gave him the gift,a pair of slippers--the symbolization of their relationship. By her gestures and movements, JA obviously showed her feelings. We can see a girl who does not have any love experience is falling in love.
After that, when JA went home after a department dinner without DH,she confronted DH and his cheated wife drove home together with sort of intimate talk. The girl was so frustrated, I can tell that her face was showing complicated emotions, like disappointment, jealousy, possessiveness, or something.
But, when the CEO pushed her to show her loyalty and do something, it is sure that she can't continue to develop their relationship anymore.
So, I admit that it is a trick that she set up and wants to show something to the CEO, BUT, I am also convinced that she wants to confess and tell him that she like him loudly and hysterically, even though she did not expect any positive reacting from DH.

Amazing… Your take here is right on, sir. I don’t think that yours is a mere “possible inference,” I believe they are “necessary inferences” from the context and all the elements constructing/orchestrating this scene which you, once again, have masterfully dissected. Every element, angle, sound and even silence have purpose; there is no waste in this drama. Lee Ji-an decidedly sacrifices herself here; she loves Park Dong-hoon who is basically fighting his own feelings for her (his face says it all) -LJA: “Hit me hard enough to want to kill myself for liking you! … If you don’t, I’ll assume that you like me…” It is all true! The intensity in their looking at each other right after that statement! Wow!
    Thanks again, boss.

@@ManVsDrama Yes, right after the debugging crew left the CEO's flat, he is a bit pensive looking at PDH picture "hitting" LJA.. do you think he figures he is not really hitting but rather "pushing" her? I mean, his hand is wide open, kind of "grasping" her head.. And then, subsequently, in their meeting, he questions her and the fact that he is kind of cross-examining her with the photos, no matter what she said and how convincing it may have sounded, he didn't buy it at all. That's why he asks for the recordings and then he plainly asks: "...Why do you like him?" in her response, is LJA, once again, using her real/initial "psychopathic" rationalizations?? was she really like that at the beginning? to what extent is this real now? I think she is wearing her con-artist hat in a masterful way to get away from the fact that Do Joon-young sees through her; he knows she loves PDH.

@@ManVsDrama I know you're half-joking, but I doubt that she had this narcissistic moment of self-indulgent careerism. Her performance is too honest and raw. It probably frightened her more than anything, knowing how much effort it would require to realize such a complex and dark character - especially for a young person. It makes perfect sense that she would struggle to "break character" in between takes. The other actors and crew probably thought she was "methoding", but it's clear that playing Lee Ji‑an took so much concentration and "muscle memory" that the actress couldn't just shake her off for the sake of on-set pleasantries.
I read somewhere that IU was effectively in mourning for two weeks after filming ended, and that also makes sense. I think she went so deep there probably weren't any time or space, mentally speaking, for egotistical careerist thoughts. I think the greatest performances are like that: when the praise and adulation come later, the actors are probably embarrassed to some extent that something so personal for themselves is being so publically blown up, but they probably indulge the attention for the sake of their careers going forward.

It's such a beautiful, sensitive thing, but I absolutely hate the industry bullshit that I myself indulged in. I sometimes felt embarrassed myself when praising a wonderful performance, because it felt like denigrating something precious and "internal" and putting a publications relations spin on it, if that makes sense. Every now and again an actor would get back to me and thank me for "understanding" their performance - when many others didn't - and that would sort of make me feel better. But yah, the compromises we all make to fit into what is expected of us in whatever industry we're in can be quite dehumanizing.
I'm sure you've been in the position of being excited about a great role, thinking what it might mean for your career if you pulled it off, then shitting yourself, thinking, "How am I even gonna do this?" It doesn't surprise me that there's that "mourning period" after you've gone that deep. It's very sad in a way, thinking about having to say goodbye to something you invested so much of yourself in. This scene can confuse people, but if you know the characters well, you will realise that they are behaving exactly as per their characters. She is obviously doing this to protect him as she has been doing since episode 5 ( running to save him) and he, when caught in awkward situations or confronted with unexpected feelings, he avoids the situation instead of facing it. He is taken aback and is scared to confront his own feelings for her when she says ‘PDH likes LJA’ and walks away, again avoiding the situation. He is also running away from the situation with his wife at home and avoiding confronting her.
Anyway, the simple analysis is that she likes him and is protecting him like she always does. He likes her too, but is avoiding his own truth like he always does. Heartbreaking 💔 as both are sacrificing their true feelings for each other or any possibility of anything happening in future.

Most of what Ji-an says in Ep 10, its last scene in particular, seems to be her sincerity. Through acting for the purpose of protecting Dong-hoon, she was able to reveal her feelings (without knowing what Dong-hoon's feeings are like, making her look more vulnerable), which she would otherwise never have been able to express. And the same goes for other scenes in this episode. I think that's a strength of her character and the way it was written. When she speaks or acts here, her feelings and motives are clearly multilayered. Complexity in itself can't be a virtue, but the way it is structured can be the one...

I think Stephan nailed it with this analysis! I was confused (and still am a bit on both Ji An's and PDH's actions here) but it makes sense that she is willing to sacrifice her relationship with PDH to put him in a better position at work. I have some questions though. I think PDH and Ji An were both surprised that he actually hit her. PDH could have reacted in a number of ways, from yelling at her to shut up or telling her to go away or even putting his hand on her mouth.
So why did PDH hit Ji An? I'd love to hear what people think is the reason. It's a real betrayal of trust.
What was he feeling? Is he expressing his anger towards his wife (who he never hits) at Ji An? And, why did Ji An choose to ask PDH to hit her? Hitting a subordinate and having that photographed could have gotten PDH fired if the photo came to light. No matter Ji An's intentions, it seems like a bold and reckless move on her part. She really provokes PDH and on some level I think they are both a bit scared of the feelings they are starting to have for one another. There is something deeper going on here that mirrors Ji An's toxic relationship and power dynamic with Lee Kwang Il.
For episode 11 I'd love for Stephan to dig into some of the supporting characters and their relationship with PDH. I loved the visit to see the monk Gyum Deok.
Then we have the pivotal scene where PDH's wife Kang Yoon Hee kneels on the floor and tells PDH she is sorry. PDH explodes and punches the door multiple times while Ji An listens in.
PDH has some powerful lines here, "The moment you cheated on me with him, you pretty much sentenced me to death". Follow that with Ji An's scene with her grandmother and I think there is quite a bit to unpack. Thanks again Stephan for another great video.

Earlier in the episode she overhears the conversation between dong hoon and someone on his team, talking about another the guy on the team who apparently has a crush on a female colleague who's got a boyfriend. Dong hoon says half jokingly: "someone needs to hit him in the head so he will come to his senses" ....that's why she says that here...yes I think she didn't expect he would actually do it ...but she did too great job at provoking him that he lashed out because his words failed him because everything she said is perhaps truer than Ji an thought...it's very understandable that he did ..many years ago something similar happened to me..😅thanks for your scene 11 thoughts..all I can say is: it's going to be tricky!!😁😁

@@ManVsDrama Thanks for that quote from PDH. I think it's a bit of a projection on his part, he probably wishes someone would hit him in the head. After your analysis where you show PDH waiting around in the hope of seeing Ji An, I agree that he's really smitten. Ji An is able to really provoke him because she's not really lying when she declares her feelings. They are both struggling with emotions that may be quite new, so it's understandable they over react.

Wasn't in implied somewhere that there was supposed to be romance between them but there was outrage from people because of the huge age difference so the idea was dropped? No one seems to car about the young ceo dating the couger though. Talk about double standards. You can see him fighting his inner demons several times, like when he asks the restaurant owner if the "pretty girl that dresses lightly has been there." But knowing how much of a straight arrow he is, he wont cross that line and take advantage of her.

there was something around that at the time but probably more because of IU's celebrity status...I think to many people there's clearly a romantic undercurrent, it's expressed by Ji-An but not overtly expressed by Dong Hoon...because he's married obviously and it would mess up his whole character during the drama...but at the end...I for one think there is enough implied to expect some developments..:-)

@@ManVsDrama For ep 11 the scene in the street about the sleepers.
I have 2 questions about that episode: After the evidence delivered by the investigator, the CEO knows about The trap? He knows Ji an is against him?
And the second; when she is meeting with the CEO why is she wearing a hat? Is the first time. Is she worried about the investigators?
Thanks again and I really love your view!
