One of my favorite scenes from eps 13 and definitely one of the top ones for the whole drama is when Dong Hoon is at the interview panel and they're grilling him on things and they bring up his decision to hire Ji An and her past is dug up. Dong Hoon defends his decision and asks why are they judging her again in this setting when the courts have already found her innocent. The guy responds with that 'this is a company' and he snaps back with 'are companies run by machines? they're run by people.' I think this scene shows one of the biggest themes of the series, which is human empathy. People are so quick to judge on what they only see at surface level, but you don't know the full story and it's unfair to judge without knowing the whole story. A lot of people in this world today are like this. Also, so much of what happens in this scene is reflected in real life today, in major corporations. People are treated like machines and there is a massive lack of empathy all around. Instead of doing what's right, it's all about the politics.

Yes, definitely one of the best scenes and very pertinent. It's a pity it didn't make itself into this video! But especially when I make longer videos they tend to get more copyright challenges...so I have to keep things a little shorter! By the way....in your view...is the korean work culture similar to the Japanese one?

@@ManVsDrama I am actually not sure about work culture in Asia. Personally I am Chinese American, but the type of toxicity in this scene from upper management to Dong Hoon, I have seen time and time again at my old workplace and have been a subject to bad management, just like Dong Hoon so I can relate very much to the people aren’t machines comment.
I have heard Korean work culture is also kind of toxic, not sure about Japanese work culture other than long hours are common and its very “family” oriented in terms of the executives.

@@ManVsDrama I am Japanese Brazilian , my parents are Japanese immigrated to Brazil. What I heard is even nowadays Japanese work culture in companies is hard in terms of long hours and requirements. Add the fact Japanese people seem to be more introspective and quiet (like Dong hoon character) than Koreans in general. they keep everything for themselves. They sacrifice themselves and charge themselves too much. Another thing I noticed through dramas is that Koreans seem to interfere much more in other people life's than Japanese. For instance, family, friends and co workers act like they "must" know everything about everyone. I was surprised in the scenes that everybody stops what they are doing to watch the colleague get scolded . Like they are watching TV or sth.
How abou British work culture or these other aspect I referred?

Thanks for pointing out the conversation between the older brother and PDH's wife. (I'm terrible with the names) That scene also made me very emotional. I feel like it was really unfortunate the way the family treated her as such an outsider, and how her husband never opened up to her about his life. Everyone likes to talk crap about the wife for cheating and ignores all the other issues. It just made me emotional that he called her and looked at the bigger picture and felt some responsibility and could say he was sorry and cry with her. I really appreciated his character even more after this scene.

yeah..I agree completely. And I don't believe either that the point of the drama is that somehow Dong Hoon's family mistreated her...but to explore the how these dynamics develop without the people involved consciously wanting to hurt each other...I love his character development in this drama...he comes off quite selfish at the beginning and reveals himself to be very caring and empathetic!

Absolutely, Park Ho San did an amazing job playing Sang Hoon. That's where I have a problem with that part of the story line. Her character is that of a highly educated high flying lawyer. A professional communicator. In reality that is a person who stands up in front of other highly educated legal people, judges, and convinces them of facts in dispute or the innocence of a client. That? she is incapable of communicating to her husband that he makes her feel lonely, is a little far fetched. Also loneliness the reason for the affair? My take on it was that it was her jealousy of his shared love for others, she basically says that he had to love her above the rest, she classified the degree of love he showed to her, was she even second best? crazy reasoning, bordering on narcissism.

Glad to see you back again. I am somewhat surprised but heartened by the scenes that made the final cut. These choices, to me, demonstrate why "My Mister" is such a unique and precious gem. All these scenes are memorable, not as an instrument in driving the plot, but as a medium that carves out so vividly the human character of each role. They made the characters come alive - not as a fictional role in a drama but almost as someone we know in our life. The acting is phenomenal up and down the cast, but these scenes reveal the quality of the writing in the dialog. Ki-hoon is an impulsive hothead with a tender spot for his brother. It is masterful how he kept going back to Yoon-hee for an opportunity for denial, in lieu of typical emotional outburst when triggered. He only did it this way trying to mend the issue of stumbling on the truth out of love for his Dong-hoon. You are quite right about how the astute direction took the necessary time required to develop the unwanted recognition and reluctant acceptance of the affair by Ki-hoon.
On the other end, Sang-hoon's surprising apology to Yoon-hee showed a middle-aged, guilt-ridden man who took all the miseries around him as a mirror to reflect his own failure. As he wept to plead for his brother's case, his mindset continued to beat himself up for this tragedy. Do we all know someone like this? Have we done the same thing to ourselves at some point in our life?
As for the "It's Not A Big Deal" moment, it is really the culmination point where the supportive bond between Ji-an and Dong-hoon became complete. When we look back from the beginning of the story, the relationship between Dong-hoon and Ji-an went through tumbles and turns. As Dong-hoon uttered his gratitude to the air, unaware of Ji-an's ability to listen in, this is the moment both parties embraced the support from each other without doubt or judgment. Ji-an arrived at this conclusion much earlier but at this instance with a destroyed self-esteem on the domestic (and personal) front, Dong-hoon confessed his genuine gratitude. In my view, when he thanked Ji-an, he was truly thanking her as if she were in front of him. This fits his profile to a tee as a principled man living a life with restraint and protocol. With the plot device of the bugged phone, Ji-an could take comfort in knowing that her offer of encouragement was sincerely appreciated. Again the writing and direction of this part is just poetically touching.
I thought you used a great word to characterize the scene when Ji-an got ready to go on a run - "patience". The direction of the moment had the masterful understanding of the emotional impact of this scene and took its time. Even without a single word, one can sense the feeling of being alone for an uncertain future. That was not the first time Ji-an had to run away but It feels far more tragic now after she managed to find a spiritual partner who accepted her and vice versa.
"My Mister" is not a masterpiece because of fancy special effects or shocking plot twists. Its beauty lies in its detailed and accurate depiction of human nature as we aim for a better tomorrow.
Well, onto the next one now, I suppose. Cheers.

Another detailed analysis video; thanks! The taxi scene is so well done - the quiet taxi, the soundtrack kicking in right after he says "Thank you" to the air and you see her hear it, Ki Hoon seeing everything and encouraging him to just text her thank you....augh it's all so wonderfully done. The show does such a good job weaving together different perspectives. And in this sequence, it's heartbreaking that she needs to go on the run just as PDH realizes how thankful he is for her and how much he needs her.
Thanks for highlighting Ki Hoon's role in discovering the affair (great, suspenseful scene!) and in encouraging DH to text her back. I read once that Ki Hoon, Dong Hoon, and Sang Hoon represent the id, ego, and superego of an individual. I thought that was so insightful! Ki Hoon would be the impulsive id who says and does what Dong Hoon REALLY wants to do. Sang Hoon would be the responsible, mature superego who does what Dong Hoon is supposed to do (apologize to Yoon Hee, stay with Yoon Hee and forgive her, etc.), and Dong Hoon would be the individual who is trying to balance between the two. It's an interesting dynamic to think about - and if the show were intentionally drawing the characters that way, that is brilliant.
BTW this is my 5th time trying to post this comment...I finally removed a possibly troublesome URL of where I first read the id/ego/superego theory.... Hope this works now! :)

    Park Ho San (elder brother).
Their performances frame the main drama so wonderfully. Thanks for hilighting the scene between Park Sang Hoon and Kang Yoon Hee, that's a hidden gem. I think Sang Hoon is also feeling guilty about Yoon Hee's treatment from her mother in law and family. It's telling that Yoon Hee in E12 says to PDH "But you were never fully on my side. I hate this neighborhood and all the people around you, too. They don’t even know how lonely you make me feel." Then we get Ji An saying to Jung Hee that she "Wants to be reincarnated in this neighborhood". This makes me more empathic to Yoon Hee's character knowing the loneliness she must have felt. Your analysis is amazing. Everything you said in every scene. The one where Sang-hoon calls Yoon-hee was so surprising and so moving, but like you say, it made so much sense. The scene of the episode for me though was the last one you looked at, when she texted him and he replied out loud. I lost it, and I don't even know why. I think it's because in the previous episode, she says thank you for the first time that I remember, and Dong-hoon's looks was so telling, that he was aware of that. And then, he thanks her, not to her directly through a reply, though unknowingly to him, thanks her directly through voice. Go-hoon asks him if he is trying to keep a distance, and I think it's because he feels he has to, that he does have feelings for her, and just can't express it to het directly, but ends up doing so anyway, which of course makes her cry - and me too lol.
Edit: You're right! It is very much a goodbye - that plays a role too! And the slippers at the end. That sort of puts a stamp on it being a goodbye and Dong-hoon realizes it, after we sense it through the last scenes. Definitely also a favorite moment that has a lot to do with such a perfect script.

Another great video Stephen! I especially liked the way you highlighted the scene where Ji An was stepping out of her house to run away. That indeed was beautifully-shot!
What also struck me in this video is on the 21:52 mark, it showed a shot of the family pictures in PDH’s home as he was entering the house. It still showed the 3 of them in one photo, akin to the photos he still have at his current work desk. I’ve been searching for the episodes where these pictures were shown and I’m glad I saw them here, though I think these family photo shots were shown a few more times throughout the show. Contrast them to his new work desk at his new company in ep 16, which showed 3 photos of his wife and the son but without him this time, and a 4th picture of him with his two brothers in their “men-in-black” get-up. This is the first bothers’ photo shown in the whole series if I’m not mistaken. Plus the fact that the wife has practically exiled herself in the US with their son, gives a firm conclusion as to the status of their marriage by then. Anyways these can be unpacked further in the ep 16 video. :)

Yes! That is a huge contrast that by the time episode 16 rolls around, the family photos on his desk have been replaced by the photos of just Yoon Hee and Ji Seok in America. Also, in Episode 16 the Netflix subtitles are wrong. :( At the cafe Netflix has Dong Hoon saying that his "wife and kid are in America" when in reality he says "my kid's mom and my kid are in America." (He says "ae omma" in Episode 16 in the cafe instead of his usual "chib saram".) I was so disheartened and confused when I first watched the drama, to think that he was still married at the end of it all. But when I read that he actually says "ae omma" instead of "chib saram" - which he had been using the entire show up until then to refer to Yoon Hee - I was relieved. Apparently "my kid's mom" adds an extra layer of distance and is a way of showing us that Yoon Hee is no longer DH's wife.

Which brings us back to the original controversy if the show’s writers did change anything in that last scene so as to align with their announcement that there will be no romance in this show, which was a reaction to concerns on the age gap issue.
But regardless if they will pursue a relationship or not, the whole show is definitely a love story. It is, in fact, one of the most beautiful love stories I’ve seen among the few K dramas I’ve watched. Only on my 3rd watch did I notice all the stolen glances they would throw at each other. There are too many to mention but most notable for me were Ji An’s glances on Dong Hoon while he was giving a free inspection to the restaurant. Gwang Il noticed it too which made him realize (mentioned in another episode) that it’s not flirting, not gold-digging, but something different. (which caused him to crush the can he was holding.) For Dong Hoon, it was when they are bringing grandma to the care home and Ji An just boarded the taxi. Dong Hoon was still standing and he stopped for a moment to look at Ji An’s nape. Talk about sexual tension.
I also realized that Ji An’s attraction (at least only physical at first) to Dong Hoon went all the way back to the first couple of episodes. The way she would stare at PDH is different from her stares with other people she confronted (like the CEO) and all those reverse-psychology phrases she had used: “Ahjussi, you might think you’re attractive,” “Hate me with all your passion.” Even her questions to the CEO (ep 2) on why he would date a middle-aged woman and how pretty could she be already hints on some jealousy to the wife of Dong Hoon.

In the scene where Dong-hoon says that there is no one who tells him that it is not a big deal, the two brothers only endure tears and can't say anything. Because, it's actually a big deal!
The scene where Sang-hoon leaves the side dish container silently overlaps with the scene in the previous episode where his mother witnessed him being insulted while cleaning and left the lunch box silently(Dong-hoon's line, "I'll pretend I don't know.").
In Confucian culture, the eldest son is given more obligations as the leader of the family (as such, the eldest son receives priority support. When you watch family eating scenes, Sang-hoon always touches the food first without hesitation, No setting the table together. He is implicitly familiar with the rules of being treated first as the eldest son). The guilt that Sang-hoon feels comes from not playing the role of his properly. It would be the same in Western culture to some extent, but this cultural code was very strong, especially for Koreans of the age of Sang-hoon.
In addition, since Dong-hoon actually plays the role of the head of the family, (character of ) his oldest brother's wife is more suitable for him than Yoon-hee('s personality)(It's not that she's the type he likes). because she has a typical "eldest daughter-in-law" personality. She takes care of all her family members and has a strong living ability. Yoon-hee is an urbanized and elegant woman, but she does not fit Dong-hoon in this respect because she wants to become independent with Dong-hoon and his son. I understand the loneliness she felt, though.
A scene where a small girl wears a bag larger than her body (the idiomatic expression 'being bigger than one's body(=torso)' is often used in Korean) in the cold and clear early morning air, facing the world... It's hopeless but there's a small hope...

@@ManVsDrama Thank you so much too :). I always enjoy your analysis videos.
In the first comment, the subject of the first sentence of the second paragraph from the bottom is Dong-Hoon, not Sang-Hoon. And Yoon-hee was mistaken for the name Yura. You probably couldn't understand what I meant. I edited it. sorry.
To explain a little more, Ki-hoon hits Sang-hoon's shoulder when he wants to eat first in the scene where he buys Dong-hoon expensive tuna sashimi and tells him to let dong-hoon eat first today. Dong-hoon refuses, but shows signs of joy. The meal was for Dong-hoon, so he treated his brother as the main character of the meal. It's the same cultural context.
In the early episode, when Dong-hoon bought Ji-an boiled pork, Dong-hoon puts the glass in his mouth first, Ji-an holds chopsticks and eats. It's a very slight thing so that's hard to pay attention(It's not clearly shown in other eating scenes), This shows that at least she has minimal courtesy education and respects seniors (even at an unconscious level as a familiar behavior). In other words, it hints that she is not a bad person at the root.
On the other hand, although Sang-hoon is the eldest brother, he doesn't care much even when he is with his mother, who is older than him, and raises spoons or chopsticks first. He is basically a good man, but on the one hand, he is a naive and somehow careless person. He probably received a lot of consideration in the family.

That's a great insight about Ae Ryun (Sang Hoon's wife) and how she takes care of all her family members. it was impressive that she maintained a good relationship with Sang Hoon's mom and visited her on a regular basis even if she and SH were separated for the time being. She helped polish omma's things even....and just was part of the family. Yoon Hee barely had a relationship with her mother-in-law besides coming to a couple of dinners in the time the show covered. But it broke my heart when Yoon Hee said, "How can you say you're eating dinner with the family when I'm not there?" So sad. You're right...her loneliness was so real. And that was balanced by her disinterest in hanging out with Dong Hoon's family or friends. One can see why they both kind of shut down in the marriage. That part of the show was hard to watch! :(

Thank you for this comment. This is the kind of insight I value the most as it's going to help me get a deeper understanding of kdramas in the future. I'm kinda new to kdramas and I really enjoy them, but I don't have much knowledge of the culture yet, and every little bit I do know seems to always come from a (im assuming) a Korean person on some random comment section who is kind enough to explain some of these things. Thank you.

@@ManVsDrama you should. It's been a long time I haven't connected to something (this drama) and someone (you) who has appeared to have the similar impact from most of the scenes I have . The older brother apologizing for sister in law is my favourite scene. And you add rich details which I haven't noticed like the scene Lee ji-an faces the world alone again, with the backpack and looking at the city. Because of you I decide not to finish my first round (I stopped at episode 14) and started to watch from the beginning again . Don't want to the drama ends !

@@mortenhk7226 yeah...that scene is a miracle of writing..humanising everyone involved. Ok sounds great. Given how great the last two episodes are you've got great restraint not to watch the last two episodes and start again...but yeah..repeat viewing just enhances the experience with this drama! enjoy!👍😎

I rarely tear up in watching movies or dramas but the scenes with the grandmother as well as the one where sang woon apologises to his sister in law over the phone cracked me up.

the Sang Hoon phone call is killing me too...it came as such a surprise...but made so much sense...one fo the most heartbreaking scenes in the whole drama for me!🤓

@@ManVsDrama That actor can really act. All of them were top notch. It's so nice to see the drama getting even more attention as it was confined to a smaller cable network when it first came out. The brilliance of all of them from director, writer, actors, cinematographer, sound designer and music producer deserves a worldwide audience. BTW, the last time I teared up was watching another kdrama That Winter The Wind Blows.

I agree with the interpretation of the scene, but I can not help but wonder what the brothers reaction would have been had he also known that she actively conspired with her lover to ruin Dong Hoons life. That is a big part of this story, not just the affair but her willingness to ruin Dong Hoon. It just seems to have been omitted entirely. I think the reaction would have been a lot different if that had come to light..

    • @ManVsDrama
      @ManVsDrama  Рік тому

mmhh..sorry if I comment very late...personally..I don't think she tried to ruin his life..she wanted to have a happy life herself. She wasn't written like she wanted him to suffer. She says several times she knows how miserable he is with his work and I find it believable that she also believes (like she says to Ji An) that with his experience he will always find another job or start his own company...I mean..funnily enough he even started his own company in the end looking a hell of a lot happier at the end. So..I guess I don't quite see your premise..If she had been vengeful, trying to ruin him...she would have done things the way she did as a character..what do you think?
