    FINALLY, someone who is thorough. You are the first to include the change in temp of the FD. Thank you so much. This is the 1st time I've found your site & i will be watching more.

    I haven't finished the video yet, so maybe it's mentioned; but here's a tip for the stems. Save them and use them for broths. They're going to be strained out anyway, so the texture doesn't matter, but you get more flavor out of them. Then you don't have to lose the precious leaves that way.
    I really do appreciate this video. The freeze dryer is ordered and fresh herbs are HIGH on my list! I didn't even taste freeze dried herbs until I was in my 40's and I felt like my whole life before that had been a lie. Freeze dried herbs are nothing like the normal dried herbs you get off the shelf. Not even close.

    This is an excellent presentation in terms of the video, information, and use of the selected herbs. You do a great job with the verbal discussion as well. I think the use of the cheese cloth is a good idea which I will do next time. Also turning down the drying temperature is a good idea. I have share and recommended your video to others.

    Thank you for the great detailed tutorial! I would also add that I was gifted (from my wishlist) some silicone "dehydrator" mats. The ones I selected stated they they were safe for the freeze dryer. I cut the to the shape of my trays. They are a waffled pattern for airflow. They work great as a top cover for things like hebs instead of the cheesecloth. I also use them as bottom mats for my extra set of trays for things that aren't very juicy/wet (not eggs).

    It seems from your video that the freeze dried herbs retain their size and didn't shrink. Is this so? and what is the weight difference as compared to dehydrated drying? The reason for asking is because my dehydrated herbs are diced / chopped up to fit into the tray and shrinks a huge lot by the time they are dry. Their weight is also just a fraction of the original weight.
    I just noticed that your video is already a year old. Is your freeze dry machine still working and was there any maintenance required?

    • @karmengosenca4702
      @karmengosenca4702 Рік тому +2

      @@DMB_SUNGLASSESGUY Yes, but you have to keep the herbs in the freezer all the time. So, I meant freezing, as in keeping in the freezer. :D Eventually some "ice" can accumulate, but that's it. They keep the colours and taste. Way better than regular dry herbs. But it mainly works for the herbs that I mentioned. At least for me. Thyme, oregano, for example - these I dry in a "normal" way and didn't find them that good, when freezed. :)
      I pluck the leaves or chop them and put them in recycled plastic packaging. Hope this helps.

    For end-of-season harvest, I'm considering pureeing a large quantity of mint with a little water, then pouring that in the tray to maximize yield. Have you tried this yet?

    • @wholefedhomestead
      @wholefedhomestead  Рік тому

      I have not, but I wonder if puréeing it releases a lot of essential oils and could full the flavor.

      America is a melting pot of people from all over the world, different cultures, speaking different languages. So, I may use "erb" and my neighbor could say "herb" depends on where you live and where your family's from... We know what the other person means...
